    Water games

When the show leaves behind the silly 'mind control' story-line and centers on good old cat & mouse games, it still delivers thrills and enjoyment to spare. Luckily for us, we don't get much more 'plot' development (if you can call that thing about 'mind control' plot) and the episode centers on the Nathan James vs. Greek ships showdown.

And the show delivers. Both crews (Chandler & Co. vs. Lucia) try to outsmart each other all through the forty minutes of the episode. Some ideas are less well developed than others, but in general, all the tactical games, hiding and trying to foresee the other make for good entertainment. And much needed banter between characters (more Slattery and Chandle teaming together, please).

If just all the episodes could be more like this...

    • Trivia
Prairie-Masker is a noise reduction system that was first used on United States Navy warships in the 1970's, as of the late 1990's the technology is used in several navies including the Australian, British and Canadian Royal Navies as well as the Hellenic Navy. In the US Navy it is used on Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers and Ticonderoga class guided missile cruisers.

The system is designed to prevent the identification or classification of a warship by masking its acoustic signature. Instead of hearing the sound of the engines running and the propeller spinning it creates a sound on sonar similar to rain hitting the surface of the water. There are two different components to this system, the Masker portion and the Prairie portion.

The Masker portion is designed to mask the ship's engine noise on enemy sonar and to also increase the ship's own sonar effectiveness by reducing self-noise. The Masker portion typically consists of two bands fitted to the outside of the hull adjacent the vessel's engine rooms, compressed air is then forced into the bands and escapes through machined perforations to create a barrier of air bubbles in the sea about the hull, thus trapping machinery noise within the hull where it is dissipated.

The Prairie portion is actually built into the ship's propellers, on older ships it was built into the hull above them. Small holes are built into the edges of the propellers through which compressed air is pumped thereby disguising the sound of the propeller as bubbles in the water.

The external scenes of the Greek ships show real Greek navy frigates, but not Hydra-class. These are earlier Elli-class frigates, the Elli-class is a regular frigate converted to a guided missile frigate, whereas the Hydra-class was designed to be a guided missile frigate. The easiest way to tell them apart is the Elli-class has a deck-mounted Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) launcher on the bow in front of the conning tower; whereas the Hydra-class has a 20mm Phalanx CWIS point-defense gun in that spot. As they were designed to be a guided missile frigate, primarily for anti-aircraft warfare, the Hydra-class has Vertical Launch Tubes for ESSM's built into the aft deck, similar to the Nathan James' missile launch system, the only deck-mounted missile launcher the Hydra-class has are two four-cell Harpoon ant-ship missile launchers amidships.
