In 1905, zoologist Fritz Schaudinn (1871-1906) and dermatologist Erich Hoffman (1868-1959) discovered the cause of syphilis. The first effective treatment was developed in 1910; the effectiveness of penicillin was confirmed in 1943.
In 1903, microbiologist David Bruce (1855-1931) discovered the parasite that cause sleeping sickness, and that it was carried by tsetse flies.

The title is a reference to the 1995 smash-hit album from Canadian singer Alanis Morissette. Ironically, the album's biggest hit, "You Oughta Know" is also about a woman who feels betrayed by an ex-partner.
