Romance movies have enduring popularity because they allow audiences to experience a range of emotions and escape from reality. The 2010s saw the release of many memorable romance films, from indie gems like Blue Jay to blockbusters like Crazy Rich Asians. These films explore various themes of love, including rekindling old flames, long-distance relationships, and the complexities of marriage, all while celebrating diversity and breaking stereotypes.
A romantic film will never go out of fashion, and the decade of the 2010s, in particular, had some great romance movies with epic love stories that last. Escaping from reality to get swept up in a good love story is a time-honored tradition, and plenty of audiences still yearn to see poignant romances on screens both big and small. A good romance will make a viewer want to fall in love when it goes right and cry their heart out when it goes wrong.

Mel Eslyn has served as president of Duplass Brothers Productions since 2017. She’s had an understanding with Mark Duplass that, when she made her directorial feature debut, it had to be “the one.”
Now, her time has come, with Eslyn serving as director, co-writer and producer on the new sci-fi black comedy film, “Biosphere,” which at first glance has all the elements of a comedic hangout movie — with a dystopian touch of the end of the world.
Written, produced and starring Mark Duplass alongside his sole co-star Sterling K. Brown, “Biosphere” follows the final two remaining individuals in a claustrophobic man-made dome. Once the only female fish in a pond dies, the two men are left grappling with the notion that they will no longer have food to sustain themselves.

The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 5, "More Time Than You Know," which premiered Sunday, June 11 on AMC.
Almost halfway through the final season of Fear the Walking Dead, characters are still acting as they were when the apocalypse started years ago. Maybe if they actually knew what they were fighting for, they wouldn't be running around in circles like chickens with their heads cut off.
A good rule of any writing for fictional works is to give characters a solid motivation -- something they're working toward and strive to achieve, whether good or bad. This doesn't mean this motivation shouldn't change as people are allowed to change their minds. But for many characters on Fear the Walking Dead, their motivations are changing on a whim without any second thought, and it's inconceivable how these sudden changes of heart are supposed to progress the story.

The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 3, "Odessa," streaming now on AMC+.
Fear the Walking Dead co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss recently addressed whether Season 8 really introduced a cure for the mutation responsible for turning people into zombies in the Walking Dead universe.
Chambliss indicated that June Dorie (Jenna Elfman) hasn't actually discovered a permanent remedy for the Walker apocalypse in an interview with Insider. "Well, if she did [discover a cure] then she deserves a Nobel Prize," he said. "But the one thing we should say is that, what she was doing on that train, what Padre's doing on that train, really is akin to kind of a more advanced form of amputation. It's trying to remove the infected tissue before the infection can spread. So even if what they're doing in that train ends up working, it's not a cure. It's not going to end the zombie apocalypse. It's been a while since The Walking Dead universe stepped back into Georgia. In Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 4, "King County," Morgan Jones returns to his roots to put down his zombified son, Duane, and end that haunting chapter of his life.
Morgan arrives alone in King County, Georgia, to take care of some business that has been stirring him since Mo unveiled graffiti marking his deceased wife and son's name in the Season 8 premiere. He's not in a great state of mind, talking to people that aren't there and the house that he left his zombified son in. Even though he's traveled all this way to accomplish this task, he can't bring it upon himself to open the door to see his son. He's too troubled by the...

The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 3, "Odessa," which premiered May 28 on AMC.
Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 made a point of slimming its oversized cast, which has allowed for a more-narrowed focus to start Season 8, but it also made room for a few new faces. Morgan's daughter, Mo, was center stage in the premiere; Finch was introduced in "Blue Jay," and Dove learned that her real name was Odessa in the latest episode. As Judith Grimes did for The Walking Dead, those newer characters are poised to make a huge difference in Ftwd's final season.
Some fans believed that Finch was set to take on a major role in finding the cure to walker bites. While that's not exactly the case, there's still a chance that a cure will come eventually -- thanks to "Odessa" subtly mentioning Twd's biggest Rick Grimes theory. Here's everything we know about Ftwd's potential cure,...

The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 3, "Odessa," which premiered Sunday, May 28 on AMC.
The Walking Dead universe is no stranger to some outlandish theories. From "Beth is alive" to Breaking Bad being a Walking Dead prequel, fans have found the tiniest little details to make the universe even wider and richer. One theory in particular that has remained strong in Fear the Walking Dead is that a Season 3 antagonist, Troy Otto, will return in the final season as the leader of Padre.
Before and during the initial outbreak of the zombie apocalypse, Troy helped the rest of the Otto family secure the Broke Jaw Ranch for survival purposes. He spent his time in the apocalypse studying the transformation between the human and walker state and developed a violent temperament that put him at odds with the Clark family. The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 2, "Blue Jay," which premiered Sunday, May 21 on AMC.
After an abysmal Season 7, Fear the Walking Dead implemented a time jump during its Season 8 premiere. The time jump didn't fix all Ftwd's issues because there were still too many things happening off-camera, and the plot armor was still too thick. However, the time jump did offer the series a little bit of a storytelling reset. "Remember What They Took From You" showed that Padre was still the big-bad, but during the past seven years, everything had changed.
The premiere really didn't answer a lot of questions. For some reason, Morgan believed that Padre could protect his daughter better than he could. So, he returned Mo to Padre's island and joined on as a Child Collector. In fact, except for a missing Victor Strand, everyone in Morgan's group joined Padre. "Blue Jay...

Warning: Spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead season 8, episode 2
Dwight’s story in Fear the Walking Dead season 8 proves that his entire redemption arc was pointless. In The Walking Dead season 8, Dwight turned his back on Negan and helped the main characters take down the Saviors for the purpose of revenge. Following his departure from the series, the franchise gave him a true redemption arc by sending him to Fear the Walking Dead.
In contrast to the part he played in the All-Out War, Dwight has been genuinely trying to do good while traveling with Morgan’s group in Fear the Walking Dead. By this point in The Walking Dead timeline, the character is a far cry from the villain he once was when he first encountered Daryl in the main series. Dwight has grown tremendously in his journey in Fear the Walking Dead, even managing to rekindle his relationship with Sherry.

Fear the Walking Dead co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss recently explained how Season 8, Episode 2, "Blue Jay," pulled off the most brutal scene in the spinoff series' history.
Chambliss discussed the gruesome moment in "Blue Jay" when Shrike (Maya Eshet) manipulates a zombie into biting Finch (Gavin Warren) in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "Yeah, we had a lot of conversations starting at the scripting phase, and then with the director, and then we were in post with AMC on how much we were going to show, how little we were going to show, what was effective, what wasn't," Chambliss said. "We definitely wanted to tell that part of the story to show how brutal Padre could be, but also how committed to their endgame they are, and the belief in what they are doing is going to actually protect people.

The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 2, "Blue Jay," which premiered Sunday, May 21 on AMC.
Back when The Walking Dead first premiered in 2010, it was a breath of fresh air. Finally, there's a zombie franchise that doesn't rely on finding a cure to create a gripping, addictive narrative. It was all thanks to Robert Kirkman's comics of the same name, which provided the foundation for years of interconnected spinoffs and stories, including Fear the Walking Dead.
As the years passed, Kirkman began to hand the reins to other writers to work on unrelated projects, such as Amazon Prime Video's Invincible and the 2023 horror film Renfield. This, unfortunately, led to some questionable storylines that have betrayed his original sentiment for The Walking Dead franchise. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Fear The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 2, “Blue Jay.”] Did Fear The Walking Dead really just do that? We were as shocked and horrified as June (Jenna Elfman) when soldiers allowed Dwight (Austin Amelio) and Sherry’s (Christine Evangelista) son to be bitten in order to force June to continue Padre’s experiments on curing the walker virus. Furthermore, June’s pain isn’t just psychological; she’s now lost a finger, too, in retribution for her years spent cutting off Collectors’ fingers. We chatted with Elfman about that jaw-dropping episode ending, how much more devastation June can take, and what the deal was with that jar of fingers. Lauren “Lo” Smith/AMC First, we have to talk about the end of that episode. I could hardly believe it. What was going through your head when you read ...

Warning: spoilers ahead for Fear The Walking Dead season 8, episode 2.June has been busy during Fear The Walking Dead's season 8 time skip, but the explanation behind why she collects the fingers of Padre soldiers is only subtly hinted at. After Fear The Walking Dead jumped ahead seven years from Morgan and Madison's invasion of Padre, very little was revealed about the fates of other main characters. Aside from Morgan and Madison themselves, only Grace appeared, confirmed to be working as a Padre collector. Fear The Walking Dead season 8, episode 2, "Blue Jay," reveals Dwight and Sherry fell into the same trap. June, on the other hand, has been keeping herself occupied by cutting off the fingers of Padre collectors.
This odd pastime raises two questions. Firstly, if June is so hungry for revenge against Padre, killing the soldiers would surely be more effective. One of June's victims dies by drowning anyway,...

Fear the Walking Dead has had its ups and downs for eight seasons. From plot armor to unrealistic and bloated dialogue, the series has trouble fixing the issues that are making the ship sink. One way Fear the Walking Dead did keep afloat, though, was instituting an episodic anthology format in Season 6.
After a replacement of showrunners in Season 4, the show has drastically gone downhill. There were many creative changes (mainly to do with swapping out beloved characters for off-putting ones) that critics and fans negatively responded to. Season 5 didn't create sudden improvements by mixing the horror zombie genre with a spaghetti Western. Thus, it came as a surprise that when Season 6 decided to change it up with an anthology series, with each episode focusing on a limited number of characters,...

Let’s talk about the tiny movies in America.
Not the streamer productions around $20 million that benefit from Hollywood resources, nor the dwindling middle class of features lucky enough to secure independent financing for $5 million-$10 million. This is about the bootstrapped, maxed-out-credit-card moviemaking that exists through the sheer will of its creators. The ones with the microscopic cast and crew (and often the cast is the crew), the minimalist narratives mandated by minuscule resources — the personal and potentially alienating visions of singular moving-image artists who somehow manage to bring their movie dreams to life. What happens to them?
As SXSW convenes for its first in-person edition in two years, that question is particularly apt. It describes many of the films that will premiere at this festival, and they arrive with a reality check: Major streamer entities aren’t invested in these tiny movies at a time when said streamers have...

Incrementally knocking on Indiewood’s door with 2016’s Blue Jay (TIFF world premiere) and 2019’s Paddleton (Sundance Film Festival world premiere), Alex Lehman got behind the camera in New York City this past June with Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson for a rom com titled Meet Cute – an original screenplay by Noga Pnueli. The title quasi reminds of Palm Springs – when high concept meets cupid’s arrow.

Exclusive: We have learned that Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson are in negotiations to headline the romantic comedy movie Meet Cute directed by Alex Lehmann. The deal has not yet closed.
Meet Cute, I hear, is a wildly inventive deconstruction of the romantic comedy built around the question: What would you do if you could travel to your loved ones’ past, heal their traumas, fix their problems, and change them into the perfect partner?
Cuoco will play Sheila, while Davidson will portray Gary in the pic. Noga Pnueli penned the script. Akiva Goldsman, Gregory Lessans, and Rachel Reznick of Weed Road Pictures will produce with Santosh Govindaraju and Dan Reardon of Convergent Media.
Cuoco recently closed an expansive new overall deal with Warner Bros. TV Group for her production company Yes, Norman, extending a 15-year relationship with the studio, as Deadline first reported. She developed, executive produced, and starred in...

An unwieldy hybrid of “Step Brothers” and “50/50,” Alex Lehmann’s “Paddleton” offers a funny, surprisingly tender portrait of two arrested-development adult men coming to terms with a terminal illness. Ray Romano continues to offer new dimensions to the dumpy everyman characters he could at this point play in his sleep opposite Mark Duplass’ do-nothing cancer patient, while director and co-writer Lehmann (“Blue Jay”) mines a familiar kind of male bond for an understated, unexpectedly powerful payoff.
Duplass plays Michael, a copy-shop clerk with one friend, his upstairs neighbor Andy (Romano). Notwithstanding their separate apartments, the duo spends virtually every free minute together, mostly rewatching the same kung fu movie while eating frozen pizza, but occasionally venturing outside to play an invented sport called “paddleton” which involves hitting a racquetball off of the screen of an abandoned drive-in movie theater into a barrel.

This delightfully grungy and ethereal contemporary horror from Iranian-born, Denmark-based Ali Abbasi concerns a romance between two creatures who happen to be feeling out those opposite warring sides. Director Alex Lehmann made his narrative feature film debut with the critically-acclaimed “Blue Jay” in 2016, a film that was shot with just a sketch of a screenplay in just under seven days, with actors Mark Duplass (who also wrote the sketch) and Sarah Paulson improvising the dialogue. His sophomore feature, “Paddleton,” which also marks his screenwriting debut, is a much similar, bare-bones production.

“Paddleton” might not have as much mass appeal as a zombie movie, and that’s Ok — especially to the people who made it. Alex Lehmann and Mark Duplass, who previously collaborated on the black-and-white romantic drama “Blue Jay,” visited the IndieWire Studio presented by Dropbox to discuss their low-key bromance co-starring Ray Romano. While there, they fielded questions from IndieWire’s Christian Blauvelt about the Sundance entry’s financial prospects — or lack thereof — and the freedom that comes from working with Netflix, which both of them have done on more than one occasion.
“Netflix is not the only ones doing this, but they’re very savvy about what audiences are looking for and — not to get too inside baseball about it — but I think that there is a very passionate niche audience for these kinds of movies,” said Duplass, who signed a four-picture deal with Netflix last year alongside his brother Jay.

A movie about cancer has no right to be as consistently amusing as “Paddleton” — a triumph for which credit should be spread around, even if it most deservedly goes to Ray Romano. As a bachelor whose best friend is facing his final days, Romano infuses this otherwise downcast material with regular doses of humor, all of it expertly designed to reflect the roiling emotional roller-coaster upon which he’s been thrust. Locating both pathos and comedy in a raft of small grace notes, the film seems primed to find a sizable streaming audience when, after its Sundance Film Festival premiere, it arrives exclusively on Netflix in late February.
Reuniting director Alex Lehmann with his “Blue Jay” collaborator Mark Duplass, “Paddleton” is almost exclusively a two-hander about Michael (Duplass) and his neighbor Andy (Romano), who lives above him in a dingy apartment complex. Michael’s fatal diagnosis is revealed immediately, and...

Death stalks every moment of Paddleton, the sophomore directorial effort from Alex Lehmann, who co-writes this script with Mark Duplass, his star here and the co-star of his first film Blue Jay. Michael (Duplass) is dying and there’s nothing he can do about it. He enlists his upstairs neighbor Andy (Ray Romano) to help him enjoy the months left. Not to do anything special, mind you, but rather the things Michael knows he likes: watch their favorite movie Death Punch on loop, make pizza and play Paddleton, a hybrid racketball game of sorts. A shutdown drive-in serves as their court, and the game looks legitimately fun on screen. There’s also a final prescription: a medication Michael can take that will kill him before “things get really bad.” Though Andy’s reluctant with all of it, especially the last part, he listens to his friend.

The small subgenre of films that may be mistaken for taking place in the Paddington cinematic universe will expand this year. Paddleton, which unfortunately (sight unseen) has no correlation with everyone’s favorite bear, instead stars Ray Romano and Mark Duplass and will premiere at Sundance Film Festival this month.
Directed by Alex Lehmann, who last teamed with Duplass in Blue Jay (and also wrote the script with him), follows the friendship between two neighbors. After one gets diagnosed with cancer he decided to live life to the fullest and so begins their journey. It certainly doesn’t look to break the Duplass mold of light-hearted charmers, but check back for our review shortly from the festival.

"I'm the dying guy!" "I'm the other guy!" Netflix has released the first full trailer for an indie comedy titled Paddleton, the latest feature from the director of Blue Jay. The film is premiering at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in a few weeks, then arrives on Netflix in February. Paddleton is about the unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors when one of them is diagnosed with terminal cancer. They go on an emotional journey together, chasing emus and getting into all kinds of wacky trouble, of course. The film stars Ray Romano and Mark Duplass, who co-wrote the screenplay with the director. The small cast also includes Marguerite Moreau, Christine Woods, Alexandra Billings, and Matt Bush. This looks pretty good. Netflix has released the first trailer for Paddleton. The world's largest streaming service enters 2019 hoping to not just keep, but further cement their position as the king of the streaming game. Much of that is going to involve releasing a great deal of premium, original content. In this case, we've got a new movie from the Duplass Brothers, which also stars Ray Romano in a rather rare movie appearance.
The trailer sets the tone quickly, which is dark, but not pitch black, comedy that centers around two friends doing their best to deal with terrible circumstances thanks to an unexpected tragedy. It's a balance between getting the most out of life while they still can and facing the grim reality of knowing life will come to an end sooner than expected. The real selling point is the chemistry between Ray Romano and Mark Duplass, who play off of one another very nicely.

This year’s festival will play home to at least one melancholic buddy comedy from the Duplass brothers, thanks to Alex Lehmann’s “Paddleton.” The dramedy reunited the three-time filmmaker with his “Blue Jay” writer and star Mark Duplass — who also produced the film, alongside his brother Jay Duplass — and adds in beloved “Big Sick” co-star Ray Romano for a story of two mismatched pals who undertake an “unexpectedly emotional journey.”

When you read Mark and Jay Duplass’ new book “Like Brothers” — a memoir about their relationship as much as it is about their filmmaking career — it is hard to imagine how individual directors manage to carve out a productive filmmaking career working by themselves. The book chronicles the adversities they faced in their career and how through a complementary skill set and ability for one brother to take charge — supplying confidence when the other didn’t have any — they were able to find success.
At the heart of the book are two siblings who are able to talk honestly about anything, even their feelings for each other, and find a way to move forward to a better place. It’s because of this, that the last bump in the road Mark and Jay detail in the book — HBO’s cancelation of “Togetherness” after two seasons — was also the impetus for them to write.

Netflix has signed a new four picture deal with Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass, starting with an untitled Ray Romano movie. The Duplass Brothers, veteran American independent filmmakers behind The One I Love, The Overnight, Creep, and Jeff Who Lives at Home are entering into a new agreement for worldwide rights to four upcoming projects that will be exclusively available through the streaming giant. The Duplass Brothers Shot a Secret Movie With Ray Romano as Part of a Four-Picture Deal With Netflix

You might not know it if you haven’t seen “Parenthood” or “The Big Sick,” but Ray Romano has been delivering great performances since a certain sitcom ended. The Orchard has shared a first look at Mark Duplass in Creep 2, a follow-up to his disarmingly disturbing micro-budget thriller Creep, which has won a strong cult audience since its quiet debut in 2015. Fans slowly started to discover the creepy drama on Netflix, and it's proven a big enough hit to warrant a sequel. Which should be even more unsettling than that first outing.
The Orchard has announced plans to release Creep 2 this October. The movie stars Mark Duplass in the title role, though in real life he is nothing but the consummate gentleman. His co-star this time out is Desiree Akhavan. The Orchard was kind enough to send over a first look photo from the movie.
Creep 2 will be directed by Patrick Brice, the same guy responsible for unleashing Creep on the public at large. He also directed the low budget indie The Overnight to much acclaim.
