Family Ties
Hitchcoc24 September 2019
When Fleabag and Claire go to their dad and stepmom's house to memorialize their mother, there is tension that is unbelievably thick. The stepmother is a piece of work. She is one of those persons, full of herself on the outside and ugly on the inside. Eventually Fleabag has had enough. She also betrays her sister in the process, giving up secrets to make her worthy--which doesn't sit well with her. We get to see what created the two sisters.

The Editing is Just Magnificent

The editing, especially in this episode, is awesome. The scene with the family sitting at the table is just hilariously done. The editing is fast-paced and the choices were really good. Fleabag-Claire really started to grow on me. The episode was quite fun. Olivia Colman is such a nice addition to this cast, she steals every scene she is in. Even though the show is ridiculous at times, it feels so real. The show had some problems about balancing drama-comedy in previous episodes but this episode really accomplished what it was trying to do. My favourite episode so far.

Strong episode with great character interaction

Fleabag and Claire visit their Dad and Stepmother.

This is a strong episode with great humour, drama and character moments.

The opening sequence is brilliantly funny, and the rest of the episode is one long awkward social interaction full of hostility between characters.

Dialogue exchanges that involve Olivia Coleman's character are always loaded with barely disguised venom between her and her stepdaughters, but this one is especially vicious. All these interactions are superbly written, performed and depict all the vulnerabilities of each character.

At this point in the show's narrative it has done a good job of developing the intrigue about what happened with Boo and it makes you want to watch more to find out.

All performances are top drawer as always.

Warning: Spoilers
I guess I just really like awkward family social gathering dramas.

This one was hard to sit through at times. Fleabag is a bit of a punk, but I think she's at least a bit relatable and funny. Godmother is just straight-up horrible. When she isn't being an a**hole behind the scenes, she's arrogant to everyone except her husband.

This makes for an interesting character and in interesting dynamic. Each episode further strengthens the relationships in this family specifically. I liked the brief, sweet moments shared between Fleabag and her father, and I really like Claire as well. The balldrop about her promotion toward the end was a really well acted scene.

I love that not even the cat wants to be in this house😂

This was really good. The arguing and shoving reminded me a bit of Noah Baumbach and Wes Anderson's work. It was kinda funny but mostly quite dramatic and compelling. This was great. Plenty of laughs and great character moments.

perfect setup

Warning: Spoilers
This episode sets up the finale so perfectly, we see fleabag and claire continue to grow closer, we get a good view of her family dynamic and her relationship with her dad and her godmother (who is the absolute worst) this episode is very entertaining but looking back on it after the next one it is incredibly sad.

Fleabag 5
Prismark1010 October 2016
Olivia Colman as Fleabag's stepmother comes across as very nice to Fleabag and her sister. Outwardly she is accommodating but you sense words and actions are different. Look at the way when the sisters arrive for dinner with their father and they bring flowers and she leaves them outside the house.

Fleabag's mother died of breast cancer and their father makes sure that his daughters have an annual check up. Of course Fleabag still tries to be creepy to the doctor.

They have an annual memorial dinner for their mother with their father but this time the stepmother is here as well. Well the stepmother likes Fleabag's date for the dinner. The rear entry guy, she thinks he is gorgeous and invites him to her forthcoming sex exhibition.

However dinner with the stepmother does not go well as she comes with barbed comments including planning to sell up and move to France for their father's happiness.

As with the pathos last week with the bank managers, this week the comedy soon turns acerbic and bittersweet. At least Fleabag and her dad get to have some tender moments as they drop food on the kitchen floor.
