- The village of Jagatpur in Kumoan region of the Himalayas. Laxman Singh Bisht (Salman Khan), is an abnormal child who has been bullied by some children including Narayan (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) and they call him "Tubelight". At school, Laxman was not even able to do basic addition problems. His father was an alcoholic bus driver. Laxman soon gets a baby brother Bharat (Sohail Khan). Laxman and Bharat grow up together and it is Bharat who defends him from same children who bullied Laxman in many ways (including beating Narayan) so no one ever dares to bully him. During school days, M.K Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) arrived in the village to teach children everything about faith, courage and belief.
After India was freed from rule of British, Laxman and Bharat's parents passed away (Their father was drunk when he drove a truck down a mountain and their mother died in grief) and MK Gandhi is assassinated. They the brothers grew up into adulthood and their love of brotherhood gets stronger. Bharat is in love with a girl named Maya (Isha Talwar).
Suddenly, in 1962, Indian border gets attacked by Chinese soldiers. Indian Army starts recruitment of Soldiers for Kumaon Regiment in order to prepare for war. 5000 soldiers are being recruited daily. Banne Chacha (a village elder) encourages Bharat to enlist, assuring him that he will take care of Laxman. Banne argues that Bharat will get lifelong pension after serving for only 3 years and with that money he will be able to take good care of Laxman. Bharat currently works in Banne's Ashram and Banne says that the brothers will need a source of income after he passes on. Local shopkeeper (Brijendra Kala) is also sympathetic to Laxman and Bharat.
Laxman, Bharat and Narayan go for army selection trials, but only Bharat is selected. Major Rajbir Tokas (Yashpal Sharma) is in charge of recruiting for the Kumoan regiment. Narayan is rejected because of knock knees (as Narayan will be at the risk of falling every time he runs) and Laxman gets rejected because of his abnormalities, but he gets offered an honorary post as an informer/messenger for army (after Bharat begged Rajbir not to reject Laxman outright).
Indian soldiers (including Bharat) reach Indian border, where there is a huge tension. Suddenly a war rages between India and China. Laxman too learns about it. Laxman anxiously waits for his brother to come back, running from post to post to find out about him. Radio only reports that Chinese forces have Ingressed deep into Indian territory and many Indian posts have been captured,
Laxman meets a magician known as Goga Paasha (Shah Rukh Khan) who performs a show in Jagatpur. Laxman gets selected from the audience to test his faith to move a bottle. No one believes in Laxman and even Narayan tries to tease him. After several attempts, Laxman succeeds, and this shuts up the entire village. Banne wants Laxman to have faith that his brother will return. Laxman again tries to move the bottle in front of Banne Chacha (Om Puri) but fails. Banne explains that "Faith moves a mountain" and also explains how Laxman will find and get his faith.
Laxman suddenly observes Indo-Chinese woman named as "Le Leing" (Zhu Zhu) and boy named as "Gu Won" (Matin Rey Tangu) coming to the village, and he informs some people (including Narayan and the shopkeeper) about their presence in India. Narayan tries to attack their house with a petrol bomb, but he fails when he falls down due to his knock knees. Banne Chacha gets angry about this and advises Laxman to befriend the woman and boy who were attacked. Banne argues that M.K Gandhi did not hate Britishers but learned from them to free India from British rule.
After some attempts, Laxman finally succeeds in befriending Leing and Gu. It was not easy as Laxman had tried to burn their house down. Leing convinces Laxman that she and Gu are Indians. Laxman tries to explain to Indian army about Gu and Leing, but he fails. Rajbir is suspect that Leing and Gu might be Chinese spies in the area. Narayan tries to attack Gu (when he is alone), but Laxman saves him.
Leing explains that her grandfather came from China to India long ago. They settled in Calcutta. She says that her father, brother and uncle were all born in India, but due to the war they are jailed in Rajasthan. Leing's husband is dead, and she brought Gu to Kumaon, to tide over the duration of the war and wait till her father and brother are released from prison.
During the war, Bharat displays exemplary courage while capturing a Chinese bunker on a hill. Bharat is shot in the arm while hurling and grenade inside the bunker. While being evacuated after the injury, he is ambushed and taken prisoner. He makes a plan with other prisoners to escape. Laxman learns about this and gets heartbroken, but Leing asks him to have faith so he can get his brother back. Leing says that once the war is over, all prisoners would be released automatically.
Narayan tries to convince Laxman not to befriend Chinese people or he will lose Bharat forever, but Leing explains Narayan that she and Gu are not only Chinese but Indians too. Laxman tries to explain Narayan everything he learned from Gandhi (including a faith can move a mountain), Narayan challenges him to move a mountain and Laxman succeeds it as he brought about an earthquake.
After some days, Laxman learns that 264 soldiers were martyred, he then tries again several times to stop the war (with his imaginary powers and faith) but soon he learns that he succeeded in doing something as he learned that war is stopped, and border line emerges between India and China. They celebrate the end of war, and Leing gets her lost father back in the process. Narayan is jealous of Le Leing and beats her dad up. In retaliation Laxman beats up Narayan.
Suddenly, they hear the news that war is still continuing in some parts of the border and receive news that Bharat has been killed. After learning this Laxman gets shattered as he feels that people were right about him, but Leing and Gu comfort him. Leing and Gu bid farewell to return to Calcutta.
Suddenly Gu, Leing and Laxman receives a news that Bharat is still alive but lost his memory and he gave his shoe to someone else, based on which he was declared dead. Laxman receives spare shoes from Narayan and enters medical camp with Banne, Gu and Leing. Laxman manages to get memories of Bharat back and gets reunited with his brother.
In the end, Laxman narrates that Faith slowly wakes up, but when it wakes up, it lightens the world like "Tubelight" and Laxman is seen playing with Bharat.
