Not much of a plot, things just happen
pinky_scotty10 November 2020
I kept imagining that if i were my teen self, I'd probably think this was "deep." But now i think it's pretentious!

I think it's high time young adult novels are written by younger adults, because these novels make teens look like these adults , and so deep and serious, when in reality there are moments of lightness as well.

The chemistry between the leads are good. Only thing that makes it watchable , apart from the cinematography.

This was okay. This is the same brand of pretentious as John Green. Sorry not sorry, but teens don't sound like a novelist.

Also, the lead guy was kinda a pushover. I get the trope of nerdy, artistic shy guy, whatever. But that doesn't make all of them the same, he could have come across as less pathetic and stronger boundaries ! Sad that teens are being pandered this crap as romance and coming-of-age. Your high school love doesn't have to a tumultuous tortured romance. 🙄🙄🙄 This is second only to those teen cancer movies, we need better genre!

I love Drama Z.

Lost my words...

A deep embodiment of what it is to forget who you used to be. Dealing with the unknown, people tend to forget who they were or who they wanted to be. Watch this movie through the eyes of your old teen self. As someone that needs to learn more of what no one, but life itself, can teach us. Give it a chance.

Avoidable
faer_kr4 November 2020
A teen drama movie based on a book. How can we get over that love that hurt us? In this movie you won't know. It is about a boy who meets a girl and falls in love with her, while discovering his past. Parsimonious. Quality. She talks about how sometimes we cannot forget the damage we have done or the damage they did to us, although she succeeds in doing it, she does not show how to overcome it, she becomes more and more stuck in her central idea. It is not your typical teenage story. At times it may seem silly and toxic, the message it tries is good but the situations and how to get there are not. Avoidable. It's like a sleeping pill in the middle of the movie, it has a good opening and a little closing, but it falls off in the middle. She tries to look smart and is only ostentatious because she can't. The book may try something else but the film does not and stays in the attempt.

The discovery of loss and love by teenagers who are caught between childhood and adulthood is both beautiful as well as heartbreaking
maanikroda13 September 2020
So last day it was about Chemical Hearts! Strong acting and melancholic drama that portrays the other side of love. It makes our heart thuds and wet.though it doesn't show any death scene but post death emotions and great acting skills delivers all the pain with an uncompromised level. Once again Lili. Austin was subtle but it so realistic about how he is so affectionate to a person who doesn't love him back, how he couldn't find words when he wants to express him and he is ready to offer his soul to the already broken girl and he gets rejected and it breaks his heart! There comes some words about other teenage problems though. It doesn't describe anything other than pain and love. But surely explain the Confused Limbo stage of teens. But as they break up, Austin is finally entering to adulthood and his view change as the film says adults are just scarred teenager who tried to escape the limbo stage! But when it comes to LOVE all adults are just teenagers, doesn't it?

Unusually heartwarming
saahilmopkar21 August 2020
It avoids the typical teenage romance genre clichés and instead focuses on character development and how relationships at a young age shape individuals into who they become as they grow older Great soundtrack and performances by the lead pair

Tries to be so dramatic and smart but totally fails
marisol_fc9 September 2020
Movie is a snore they keep putting this voice over trying to make the plot smart and different explaining chemical reaction on the brain and the primary characters say things like " you are and incredible collection of atoms" eye roll and Lilly is just bad at acting and she basically just had to blank stare like 60% of the movie

Young Love.
anabiaq21 August 2020
It jumps ahead from the typical teenager romance and explores the reality of young love and heartbreak. I could relate so much on how they portrayed the confusion about being in love and about being someone that you aren't ready to be yet. If you are someone that easily cries watching movies, you should totally bring a tissue with you. Lili Reinhart's acting is flawless and the way she embraced the role of grace town is totally out of this world.

Romantic drama story that goes over loss and young love.
cruise0131 August 2020
Chemical Hearts (3 out of 5 stars).

Chemical Hearts is a fair romantic drama film. About young love Henry (Austin Abrams) joining a newspaper class as a editor in chief. Along with Grace (Lili Reinhart) which she has a limp and a past she cant get over. When Henry and Grace partner up in class. Henry falls for her. As Grace is stubborn about opening up.

It is a decent story. About young love, grief, and loss. Which will say i also liked about it. Which is not a predictable love story. It does get kind of boring with Henry and Grace going back and forth with there love for each other.

The cast ensemble was decent. Lili Reinhart delivered a great performance as Grace. Austin Abrams was decent as Henry. The direction is a bit dull with the romantic drama. Which could have been more emotionally moving. The script was lacking the emotional depth with the characters and the content it was going through.

Chemical Hazards
hayley_harris2 November 2020
Chemical Hearts is a decent film that spreads mental health awareness. The movie is a love story about a hopeless romantic falling in love with the new girl at school. Lili Reinhart's acting is incredibly touching. Despite the fantastic acting, the story was poorly executed. The plot seemed unfinished. I would recommend this movie to suckers for sappy, romantic, chick-flicks.

New on Amazon, high school difficulties.
TxMike24 August 2020
This is a really good movie, better than I expected. I like Lili Reinhart, having watched her as Betty in "Riverdale", she also was a producer for this new-release movie on Amazon streaming. Set and filmed in New Jersey, she is high school senior Grace Town, new to this school, with a limp and a cane.

Austin Abrams is Henry Page, also a senior and newly appointed school newspaper editor. Grace and Henry become friends and then more, but Grace always seems distant, something is bothering her, she doesn't speak about it easily. It is wrapped up in the bad wreck about a year earlier that killed her friend and cut her track career short.

The title is a reference to several things, one a comment made early while looking at the night sky, that we are just molecules, chemicals, made from exploded star remnants. Another is what Henry's doctor sister says about chemical changes in the minds of teenagers, as they start to leave behind childhood and cope with what it means to be a young adult. Teenagers develop Chemical Hearts.

The movie doesn't have a wrapped up, happily ever after ending but it does have Henry and Grace each headed in perhaps better directions, preparing for young adulthood. My wife and I watched it at home on Amazon streaming.

A Messy Story about Loss, Trauma and Healing
teiixeiral9 March 2022
Have you ever watched a movie that was so realistic that you felt depressed? That's how I felt watching Chemical Hearts.

Lili Reinhart and Austin Abrams do great work with the complicated material by bringing a level of emotional authenticity to their characters that feels tonally perfect. The soundtrack and direction (love the film stock) give this film an independent vibe that suits the seriousness of the story.

I did find some of the writing to be cheesy and the plot lacking in character development which is why I wouldn't watch this again. But I do commend the unpredictability of the main storyline, especially since it's different from most teen films.

The Direction Was Really Good!!! Lili Reinhart !!!
rakshitchaprana22 September 2021
This movie is definitely distinguishable from other teen movies or shows as the storyline feels more realistic and there are no bizarre situations in this movie. Lili Reinhart gives another marvellous performance as usual. The biggest problem is that there is actually nothing happening other than the main plot and I appreciate it but I really wanted better character development. So it's a 6/10 for me.

Chemical Hearts - Pleasant
shineshaleen23 August 2020
A unique and realistic story line that thankfully avoids exaggerating love and foolish fairy tales that would normally be about unrealistic feelings and 'magic'. The story rather focuses on what most teenagers feel nowadays; attraction, loneliness, guilt, pressure, flaws, exploring of new feelings and then trying to run away from it, young love, unexpected responses and simply pain.

I liked how the character Grace explained what being a teenager is really like. Her character also showed development from guilt, regrets and acceptance of reality. The character of Henry also was seen dealing with his firsts, and also like any teenager the want of something exciting or unusual to happen in life/in his senior years. However, the presentation was little slow and the chemistry between the characters wasn't as much as expected, there was more of awkwardness which was understandable in the beginning but as the story went on, it just got bizarre and more of lost.

I loved Lili's performance, she showed all the emotions needed, completely natural, nothing over the line! I also like the way Austin presented confusion however it really ended up being emotionless and the delivery of the dialogues wasn't as promising as it needed to be.

Overall, it was pleasant and simply realistic, plus point on talking about this topic, but still few parts of it could be improved.

A remarkable story of love, heartbreak & maybe life...
drrajeevshukla21 August 2020
It's brilliant in every way - the tone reminded of The perks of being a wallflower. It's so beautiful. Love, angst & heartbreak. Just when I thought they don't do love stories these days, comes this. Must watch.

Nice casual watch
preetjee31326 August 2020
Pretty much as the expectation, Chemical Hearts is nice teen movie about how teenagers are inundated with emotions which can sometimes get out of hand. The actors try to play their part for most of the movie but none of the performances really stand out in any way as the movie has many different little storyline which are never fully developed.

Not for someone whose experienced loss or real life in general
katiesanders-423167 August 2021
The female lead totally handles loss in a selfish way and everyone around her is enabling it. As someone whose experienced great loss this was a weak example of how to handle it. I hope teenagers aren't watching this and thinking that falling apart and revolving your life around your pain is how to be. Being young is hard, yes. But this movie glorifies self pity and sulking. I feel like all the positive reviews are coming from immature places that are romanticizing real pain. It's actually a bit gross.

Beautifully heart touching
anasjav-7822 August 2020
The confusions in teenage is ofcourse hard to express, lack of experience of life makes it even difficult and in-turn becomes a life experience itself. Very well put by the director the unusual teenage thoughts on to move on, especially when there is a heart break. Its a tender age.. people around define a lot and making an effort to understand the wage feeling is very well put. Acting topnotch by both the leading actors, elements of love by the supporting actors is a cherry. Could have touched more points, and yes a chance in any way would be a lot positive or rather convincing .. maybe. Overall, new perspective , fresh, touching and beautiful.

Stupid.
tywoo-9079431 December 2020
So boring. I am only 20 minutes in and so far it is so boring, makes no sense, and tries so hard to be emotional. There is no connection between the characters other than that they like to write and yet they are being all romantic. It is ridiculous. It is also so cliché it hurts my bones. I knew this would be dumb but didn't know it would be THIS bad. I expected more from Lili since she produced it but she over does everything. Mental health is huge and so is serious injuries and traumatic experiences, that is basically what my life is built off of, but she over does it. It is so desperate its actually disgusting and a disgrace to all these serious issues. They tried but failed. I bet the book is good because it is probably more detailed, allowing the reader to build a connection. The movie epically fails that. It had only gotten worse the more I have watched. I am disappointed but not shocked. I love Adam as an actor and he played his character so well, like I kind of felt for him. Everything else is just stupid. Worthless. So sad, this movie adaptation is disappointing. Hope the books better. All-in-all, not worth the watch unless you are curious like me and hella bored and want to be more bored.

On second viewing.
SamJamie24 July 2021
A high school senior falls in love with a new transfer student who hides a heartbreaking secret.

I watched this on the first day it came out, and just again today. Mostly for Lili Reinhart, who by the way offers a brilliant performance, full of raw emotion and range - and by far the best part of this film. Where the film falls short is in its melodramatic love story and uneven pacing, some cringe-worthy pretentious dialogue and annoying side characters. I liked that the film discusses what teenagers go through involving body image, suicide etc. Especially during a conversation between the two leads in the library.

It's a story of self-discovery that captures the thrills, disappointments and confusion of being a teenager. It's genuinely worth a watch, even if it's just once.

Great actors but average and kind of bizarre storyline
claudiaschreibvogel26 August 2020
Chemical Hearts is a very average movie. Not terrible but not great either -i felt like it could have been a looot better but it never really managed to lift off the ground. I like Lili and Austin in the movie, both great actors, yet the storyline feels a bit bizarre, since it tries to focus on a lot of serious issues such as death, loss, mental health, etc. but never really strives to translate them into an interesting narrative... The movie feels very cliché too with the high school set up etc, I think I would've liked it a lot better if It had taken place elsewhere (two people meeting somewhere different than a high school). This is the kind of movie that's pleasant to watch during a flight or some other moment when you've got nothing else to do, however not a movie I'd invest much time in if I had other plans, let alone go watch it in the movies.

At least Really good first half.
ahmadfrie30 August 2020
Easily can be way better, first half is so good fir me you can say its no typical romance, alot of good conversation, good and clear develop for the characters. The problem in my opinion is the whole second half, so weird decision from the director an the writer. I would love if the second half take the path of first one instead of psychological and traditional choice. And the ending of movie a little pit dumb and unnecessary. At all good movie I didn't regret to watch it but really can be way better.
