This post contains spoilers for season 4, episode 8 of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Caves," lieutenants Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) -- on the same away mission for the first time in a while -- find themselves deep in the rocky, underground catacombs of a distant planet called Grottonus studying moss. Mariner whines about the mission, stating as soon as they beam down that she feels like she had been in that same cave a hundred times. Boimler considers his surroundings and notes that all caves, no matter the planet, kind of look the same. Tendi notes that all caves look the same because they're all made by ...
There is a small beat before she and Rutherford answer "soluble minerals" in unison.
Mariner's and Boimler's comments, of course, are a winking in-joke for Trekkies.

Discovery delivers another great modern Star Trek episode in its fourth instalment. Spoilers and geeky spots ahead in our review...

1.4 The Butcher's Knife Cares Not For The Lamb's Cry
What a title this episode has. If Discovery has done nothing else, it’s brought back the spirit of the original series’ episode titles, which were essentially “how grandiose and Shakespearean can we be in fewer than 10 words”. Turns out: very.
Of course, it’s not completely without meaning. There are lots of butcher’s knives in this episode, and lots of lambs crying. Metaphorically, of course. The most Star Trek thing about this episode was Burnham’s insistence that science and compassion prevail over, like, randomly shooting stuff in the face.

Star Trek is probably the most successful science fiction franchise of all time spanning six decades of science fiction storytelling. In the series, I will be looking at the highlights of all the past episodes from each season of all five TV shows that went before leading up to the new series Star Trek: Discovery that will be airing in the fall of 2017.
Star Trek: The Original Series – Season One
Original Broadcast: (September 8th 1966 – April 29th 1967)
Development
After a failed attempt at selling Star Trek to NBC with the pilot ‘The Cage’, starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike, NBC told Gene Roddenberry to film a second pilot with a more “action & adventure” orientated plot – which was unheard of at the time. Roddenberry complied and wrote two story outlines: one being ‘Mudd’s Women’ and the second being ‘The Omega Glory’ both of which were produced later on the series...

Sibling rivalry is something I know very little about. See, I’m an only child, and so my exposure to this has been vicariously through others and by what film an TV has provided me with. I “get it,” but I don’t get it, y’know? It’s not Lost on me, it’s just not natural. Devil in the Dark is all about brotherhood and that rivalry, childhood trauma, daddy issues, and dear hunting. And an albino monster, that too.
Adam (Robin Dunne) is returning to his hometown after a long absence, in order to rekindle his relationship with his brother Clint (Dan Payne). They went on hunts with their father when they were kids, so the plan is to revisit. They leave Clint’s wife Sophie (Briana Buckmaster) and their kids, and set out into the woods. Ominously, it was warned that the last known person who...

The second feature film from Tim Brown has been a long time coming. It has been ten years since his debut film The Cradle. In between he has been producing flicks, for example he has worked with our friends from Antisocial 2, Bite and The Sublet. Brown is back behind the camera once again directing a script from first time writer Carey Dickson called Devil in the Dark. The film stars Robin Dunne (Syfy's Sanctuary), Dan Payne (Star Trek Beyond), Daniel Cudmore (X-Men: Days of Future Past), and Briana Buckmaster (The CW's Supernatural). When estranged brothers Adam and Clint attempt to reconnect over a week-long hunting trip in remote British Columbia, they find the tables turned by a mysterious presence lurking in the...
