Predictable Urban Drama

Warning: Spoilers
I tuned into this film for Catherine Deneuve but, sadly, the plot was so predictable that there wasn't any pleasure in it for me (aside from watching Ms. Deneuve).

The story begins with Julia (Diane Kruger) who, having suffered an accident and trapped with a life-long (it seems) disability because of it, is involved with a small-time thug, Rodolphe, (Nicolas Duvauchelle). As expected, he treats her roughly - *spoilers* even though she seems to like it.

When Rodolphe's treatment of Julia becomes more rough and he seems to threaten her very life, she finally lashes out in a murderous fashion. The rest of the film is about hiding the truth of the real murderer from the police and the gang members he worked with. Ben Torres (Nekfeu), one of the gang members who was also friends with Rodolphe, discovers the truth behind Rodolphe's death and decides to blackmail Julia and her mother, Louise (Deneuve) for 35K Euros. In the process of getting the money in installments to Ben, Louise and him form a sort of friendship, and she becomes somewhat of a mother-figure for him - a young man from the wrong sides of the track who got a rough start in life and went down the wrong path (predictable).

The ending is not unexpected, at all.

I watched the whole film in 2 separate sittings, as it was too predictable to see it all the way through on first try. This story isn't anything that hasn't been seen/written before, so it left one wanting...something much less obvious.

3/5, only because Mlle. Deneuve stars in it. Otherwise, 2/5.

A rather effective crime drama
searchanddestroy-111 November 2017
Actually, I still wonder if this film is a pure drama or a crime movie; maybe a little both. This is the story of a young woman - Diane Kruger - involved in a romance with a petty thug - Nicolas Duvauchelle, the French Matt Dillon, the kind of actor who, even in his forties, will continue to play youngsters characters - a thug himself involved with the local and particularly violent, fierce kingpin - played by a convincing Olivier Lousteau - to whom he owes a big sum of money. Duvauchelle is pretty disgusting here, and Kruger special too as the broad madly in love with the guy who despises her. Kruger's character's mother is here played by Catherine Deneuve, as terrific, if not more, than ever. So, that's the basic plot, the scheme of this story that will not reserve you many surprises but will not deceive you either.

a matter of family

Warning: Spoilers
Besides the "romance" cliche of a rich girl in love for a bandit, the point to me is the class struggle. Cause when Ben is confronted blackmailing Louise, he says that is doing it, cause he could (knowing about the murder) and that she must knows how does it feel to do things cause you can (with power of money) including the example of how her husband treated him as an employee. And also because when you have this kind of power, you know people inside the social structures, so if you know someone in the police (as she do) it is easier to "fix" things with the "justice".
