Pretty horrible but?
berg-745328 May 2020
Almost everything this movie try's to say has been said and said far better. Not everything was horrible, on what had to be a tiny budget a lot of the effects were pretty good so good that I'd like to see what they could with real money. Hated the male lead the moment his incredibly puckered lips started to move. The female lead was far better then the material she had to work with and when she had a couple of passion filled moments of anger it did not come off as fake. This film being what it is we'll probably never see her again but she is talented.

Not a zombie movie.
toddmcl5 November 2023
Movie cover shows zombies but there are absolutely no undead in this film. More of an Escape from New York environment where resources is scarce and gangs run wild in the streets.

A decent low budget B flick. The music is pumped a bit too high during action sequences. The main story mostly takes place inside a shack. A resemblance to the movie Trespass came into mind while watching this film with a little bit of home alone thrown in at the end. There's a nice little twist thrown in at the end with a path to a sequel paved in.

No sex or nudity, light gore and just good ole humans killing humans the best way they can.

Not sure if I'd rewatch but would be up for watching the sequel.

It takes more than a digital camera and a copy of After Effects to make a decent film.

After the proverbial hits the fan on a global scale, leaving most of the planet's surface irradiated, a lucky minority seal themselves in an uncontaminated city protected by a massive concrete wall. The other ninety per cent of the population are left to rot in the ravaged ruins of a collapsed society, turning to brutal violence and cannibalism to survive.

After 5 years of ignoring the issue, bleeding heart Jacob (Zorba Dravillas) believes that more effort should be made by the city dwellers to help those unfortunate souls beyond the wall, but after his train is derailed, leaving him stranded in the wasteland, the young man soon abandons his ideals as his instincts for survival take over.

While today's technology has made it easier for amateur film-makers working on a no-to-low budget to realise more ambitious projects, there's still no simple solution to mastering those fundamentals of film-making—script, direction, and acting. In 5 Years After The Fall, director Brent Nurse has the germ of a decent idea, but his inexperience shows in the awkward flow of his narrative, which seriously drags in places, while his cast do little to help with performances that lack finesse.

To his credit, Nurse pulls off a decent twist towards the end and isn't afraid to get vicious when necessary (kids are shot in the head, albeit with crap puffs of CGI blood), but as a whole I would say that this film is a bold attempt that doesn't quite succeed. Perhaps next time

State of the emergency
nogodnomasters31 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film starts out in a futuristic society that is walled in from the outside world which has poisoned land and people traveling in gangs becoming cannibals to survive. A train derailment places our civilized protagonist (Zorba Dravillas) outside of the city in a fight for his life... all inside one shack.

What you realize is that the film spent its entire budget in the first 15 minutes and winged it from there in rural Ontario with a bunch of "Deliverance" rejects. Acting and script was bad. Worth a hacker's bunch. What was the whole point? There are no zombies as depicted on the DVD cover art.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Lamentable shot-on-video post-apocalypse film
Leofwine_draca25 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
5 YEARS AFTER THE FALL is another attempt to do a post-apocalypse film via shot-on-video movie-making. I guess there must be a lot of derelict-looking locations dotted around the American countryside that make these kinds of film easy to produce. The first cheat is contained on the video cover, featuring the hero surrounded by a horde of zombies; there are no zombies actually in this.

Imagine a home-made THE WALKING DEAD and you'll be close to the actual truth. The main character is an unappealing geeky kind of guy who has run-ins with cannibals, mutants, and generally hostile gang members. The film has a listless feel to it, a lack of momentum that makes it a failure as an action picture, and the end result is simply that it's boring and badly made.

Not another found footage/superhero/comedy about adolescents who are middle aged
wtaylor-0416822 September 2016
I'm a little jaded by the current crop of movies. In an environment where Suicide Squad is a hit because movie goers are starved for something that is even the slightest bit different, we really have to start rethinking the corporate model of film making... That may have influenced my view of this little post-apocalyptic thriller. It is cheap. The film making and the special effects miss their mark quite often. There are weird time signatures every few scenes.

Here, on the other hand is what it is not: It is not about how dads should stay with their families because that is the strength that will save them all. It is not a found footage film about obnoxious teenagers who are picked off one by one amid gaggles of jump scares. It is not about the dangers of the internet. It contains no warnings about how getting laid will kill you. In short, it tries to be different, and for the most part, succeeds.

The story is about a sort of crusading student who may/may not be following his girlfriend to a sort of protest/love in. The world around this kid is dying as the soil is somehow too poisonous to grow food. People have shut themselves off in big walled cities, ala Priest, where, I guess they have some non-poison food. Outside, people eat each other. The kid's train is derailed by a bomb and he ends up hiding in a boarded up building, protected by a bunch of thugs who have equipment emblazoned with the same logo the kid found at the bomb site. The rest of the film is he and another prisoner trying to survive while waves of nasty guys try to get them.

The movie isn't afraid to get down and dirty (even when the effects are bit beyond the film makers.) Kids are taken down with head shots, a guy is forced to give oral sex to a knife while cannibals shout encouragement, punji sticks are employed, throats are cut. And most of that is done by the hero. Or at least the protagonist. I'm not sure I could identify a hero here, which was another kind of refreshing thing about this.

No real spoilers, but there is a twist. It's good. Maybe the best part of the movie. I will not ruin it for you.

This is obviously a first attempt at film making by guys without a whole lot of money. But, out of that outsider perspective comes a bunch of ideas I'd like to see explored. I'm kind of looking forward to what these guys do next.

So, as a film, this is maybe a 5. As a refreshing bunch of ideas, with a couple of good actors I've never seen, I'll add two more. And I'll add another two for people making a low budget horror film and deciding against found footage...

Low Budget, High Minded
ctan-9617529 September 2016
A good piece of sci-fi with a neat concept and some good twists. A neat main character who behaves about as unheroic as a hero can. Some technical issues with blood, but on the whole, a cool movie. I liked the actors especially. These low budget wonders usually cast the director or their girlfriends, but these guys are the real thing and knock it out of the park. The main character, Jacob, is especially good as he breaks down over the course of the movie, getting meaner, crueler, but still trying to hold on to his idealism. The leading lady is cute, but you have to wait until after the middle of the movie to really get her character. No nudity, sadly. If you're in the mood for a little anti-Hollywood nastiness, its all in here. Dead kids, head beatings, and a pretty original piece of knife play. Have fun!
