Love it except momma

She is always cutting off white girls and saying they talk too long. Very disturbing. And I am not a white girl.

His mother makes me uncomfortable
wlneselr13 June 2020
I like this show, but if you watch this show, his mother is always rude to any white women on the panel. She always cuts them off and tells them to quit talking. It's very uncomfortable to watch.

Mama Doris is so terribly annoying.
khalilrd21 August 2020
I would rate the show a 10 if it weren't for Mama Doris and the whole Mama Doris bust and crown. They could have an extra guest if it wasn't for all her interruptions, plus shes rude and crude. They need to send her on vacation or give some reason to exit her from the program. I'm 82 and for all the tears it was on , I watched the original show, Sometimes revisions aren't always a good thing.

Love Anthony

Please take Mama off. She isn't clever or funny. She doesn't add, she detracts. I'm not drawn to loud, bawdy. She is the only negative thing about the show. It's her personality that is bothersome.

entertaining but definitely could be better
MiketheWhistle3 July 2020
I enjoy the show for trying to guess who's the person we're trying to guess. The problem with the show is that they try to add comedy and entertainment above that especially with his mother. This is a game show and the purpose is to id someone, so I'd rather the game actually ask relevant questions than trying to come up with a question that will be a joke.

Anderson who I really like generally does a good job and actually asks questions to try and ferret out the person. His mother rarely asks relevant questions so she's a fixture vs a helpful person.

Doris watch your son go. (from home)
pault9094 September 2020
I like the show but I'm sorry Doris has to go. The celebrities are there because they are celebrities and add to the show. The network doesn't ask a celebrity mother to be on the show in place of the celebrity. Doris constantly interrupts the people who viewers tune in to see and hear. When a comedian is talking and is rudely interrupted by Doris the viewer misses out on a potential punch line. I don't see anything she adds to the show. I don't believe there is a single person who watches this show to hear Doris. Her son is famous and that is great he seems like a very good man. She should be very proud of raising a good man and be happy for his success and stay home and watch him go.

A Lot Looser and Funnier But True to its Roots
hfan7724 June 2016
It's great to see another version of the classic panel game show To Tell The Truth. For the first time since the original Bud Collyer left the airwaves in 1967, the show is back in prime time with Anthony Anderson of Black-ish handling the hosting duties. He is really funny and steers the show away from the staid format of the previous versions into a looser and funnier version.

Let's not forget the panel. Casting Betty White as a regular was a great move by the production staff since she has played the game many times in its 60 year history and asks really good questions. Also contributing are NeNe Leakes and Jalen Rose with a guest panelist each week. Give an assist to Anderson's real-life mother Doris who serves as the scorekeeper and contributes to the comedy.

But the hallmark of the show is extraordinarily talented contestants. In the episode my girlfriend and I saw, there was a female competitive eating champion, a man who was struck by lightning twice, a seven time lottery winner and a couple who got married 50 times. Kudos to the casting director for the great spots.

If you haven't seen this version of To Tell the Truth, it won't be on very long since ABC ordered only six episodes. It pays homage to the original Bob Stewart creation as Anderson quotes the famous phrase "Will the real...please stand up!" Missing from this version is another familiar phrase "Number One. What is your name please?" It has potential to be another game show hit for ABC.

boutwell_anthony30 December 2020
I like the show, love Anthony Anderson, but today we have enough rudeness from people, who believe it's ok cause it's their style..Just watched the show 12/29/20, ABC with blind contestant...no on air apology from Mom.

Upset

This was one of my favorite game shows until the host started to decide to let his mother take over the show lately she wont let the stars ask the quesitions and she acts ridiculous at times I dont see any purpose for her to even be on the show if she remains I sorry I wont be watching it I agree with another person that feels this way so please get her off I feel like she is trying to cash in on her sons fame if she remains then he needs to keep her in her place and have respect for the players

Poor Remake of a Great Show
chadwick-8695513 February 2022
Agreeing with some of the comments from other reviewers, Anderson and his mother need to go. They are useless, disrespectful, and do not add to the show, The original TTtT was educational. I can learn something when watching the old episodes on YT. Doesn't mean that everything was true, but the emphasis was to entertain with the aura of knowledge. Forget that concept in the newest show, just reduce the intellect required to watch the show to the lowest common denominator. Bud Collyer and his panelists put the latest show to shame.

The show continues to bring up the "colorization" of the show. Having diversity is a good thing. There was also diversity with Bud Collyer in the 50s, which is knocked. I am not sure where the overall stupidity of the show comes from; the host (he is intelligent, but laughs artificially), but reads his script; "Mama" who is the epitome of stupidity, lack of knowing basic English (my wife is from Czech Rep. Who speaks English better than "Mama"), Mama is a disgrace; the panelists ... a combination of brains and stupidity ... of all colors (seems that is the point of the show), folks that have no other job but to act like asses, to hear themselves make "jokes" instead of actually asking intelligent questions to the contestants; the writers ... OMG ... what is their objective ? Decreasing the show to the lowest ... makes their job much easier. Furthermore, there are criticisms about the old shows. Disgraceful lack of respect for the old shows, and of the public audience. The show should be better than the old shows, to add current issues/hobbies/interests/etc. The stupidity of the show is a disgrace to its audience.

"Mama Doris" is not just rude; her racism is barely disguised
cavautrien5 July 2021
As an addendum to every negative review here about "Mama Doris" on To Tell the Truth: DITTO.

Host Anderson's mother is rude and interrupts the actual players. She thinks she is clever and funny. NOT. She is annoying, rude, crude, and she barely disguises her racism against the white women. Blatant nepotism gone way wrong. She should go away. Now.

And if Anderson doesn't like it, I'm sure there's a real long line of other talented people who could host this classic show from the past.

Mama issues
socrfan-8018211 August 2021
Anthony has mama issues. She needs to go. And the "...right after we come back" bit got old after the second time he said it. It would also be better if the celebs would ask intelligent questions more often instead of the stupid stuff.

Mama Doris is the reason I stopped watching TTTT
PaulJ74601 June 2022
When the show began, it wasn't so bad. But adding Mama Doris was a mistake and does nothing to the show's entertainment. The whole thing has gotten out of hand with her interrupting and loud behavior. I stopped watching last season as I couldn't stand her anymore. There was also a particular episode where Anthony Anderson made a blatant comment about white people which I thought was totally unacceptable and it wasn't funny. ABC should either get rid of Mama Doris or just cancel the show along with Match Game and Card Sharks --the originals are so much better.

The New Version Retains Most Of The Important Elements
atlasmb28 June 2017
This new version of the classic television show stars Anthony Anderson as host. The basic format is unchanged: there are three contestants who try to fool a panel of celebrities; one must tell the truth, the other two are bluffers.

Anderson's mother sits nearby so he can interact with her, supposedly for humor. This lends an air of informality to the show. Other aspects of the show are also deconstructed. Anderson himself interjects questions for the contestants (as does his mama) whenever he chooses.

One addition to the original format that adds cleverness to the comedy is what might be called the game within a game. For example, after the identity of the REAL person is revealed, the next round might involve the two impostors from the previous round, one of whom has his own secret.

One aspect of the original show that remains and is important to the entertainment factor is the "gee whiz" nature of the secrets. Like "Ripley's Believe It or Not", viewers want accomplishments and odd facts that are amazing or surprising. Fortunately, there is an endless supply of these "secrets".

This incarnation of the show has more energy than the original, due in part to the music, the set, and Anthony Anderson's comedic approach (but no one ever accused Bud Collyer of being a funny guy or the life of the party). At the end of the show, Anthony takes the phone of the celebrity who is least successful in his/her guesses, and sends out a tweet that is an embarrassing lie.

For you old-timers, be sure to catch Rachel Dratch channeling Peggy Cass.

Mama has gotten too big for her britches
tke30813 June 2020
I like the show and watch more for the guests and their banter. For some reason Mama Doris has gotten to the point where she thinks she's the star of the show. I'm listening to the guest panel and Mama doesn't have the patience to listen, especially to the women panel, and cuts them off telling them to just give the answer and stop talking. Does she, and the network, not realize the guest panel is the entertainment? If we just want random people to guess who is who there is no need for the stars, and no reason to watch. Mama Doris needs to check herself and accept her role and the fact she's employed due to her son. Then the show will be more fun to watch. I'm on the brink of not watching anymore otherwise.

I have been watching this show since it started in 2016. Anthony is doing a great job. I laugh out loud so much when Sherry Shepard and/or Joel McHale are on they need to be regulars.

Cancel Doris
diedraj10 September 2019
I would actually enjoy this show if Doris wasn't on it. She's rude and always interrupting the guests who are supposed to be playing the game. I literally mute the tv when she's about to talk. I can't imagine I'm alone with my thoughts.

Comedic version of an old favorite
skylubber12 September 2019
If you like improvisational comedy interjected into an old favorite theme, this show will be entertaining to you. If you are old enough to remember, this formula is what made the 1970's Match Game a refreshing and entertaining change from the 1960's Match Game. Some of the newer remakes of old game shows have been off the mark, but having guest stars who are good at improv makes To Tell the Truth worthwhile and one of the better remakes because it does not try to be a copy of the older versions. Sometimes it's too tacky and you might find you agree with some of the other negative reviews posted here, if you like being the critic. If you are going to watch one episode, go for season 4 episode 11; be sure to stay for the entire episode, and relax!

Painful to Watch
marybethfarrell-6208129 January 2017
It is unbelievable that this version made it to TV screens. The original was witty, compelling and interesting. This is not. It does have potential, but the host is not funny at all and steals air time from the guests and panel. Even worse, is that his mother is a part of the show. She's probably a kind woman but it is simply awful to listen to her throw sexual innuendos time and time again and the banter with her son should remain in their own home. The guests are mostly interesting, but at times the demonstrations of the "talents" of the guests plays more like a mis-matched variety show. The final kicker is that the "loser" on the panel must allow a false tweet to remain on their account for 24 hours. It is an odd way to shame a panelist and the fact that there isn't a reward for a guest who fools the panel makes the whole exercise feel like a waste of time.

Fun show for some light laughs
Sasha_Lauren19 July 2020
I'm not big into watching network TV, but I love this show. It's guarenteed to be absorbing and make me laugh out loud. The premise is the same as the original game show that I watched as a kid, which was far superior, but I appreciate this light weekly diversion. All the guests have interesting stories and it's unlikely that I will guess who is telling the truth.
