Way out
kosmasp2 March 2017
Some horror movies can easily be declared as way too predictable and cliché. This one for example, where anyone watching is way ahead (no pun intended) of our main character. We know what is going on, even without much of the backstory. It hurts (yes the viewer too, but in a different way) just watching some things develop.

On the other hand, this has some really neat visual things up its sleeve and if you like horror, it does feed that lust and hunger you may feel inside. Not the best movie around or at Frightfest where I watched it, but not the worst one either. Just go with the flow, breathe and push ... well you know what I mean ...

Great style, terrible substance
rs40340414 October 2017
"Let Her Out" is a small budget movie. But you wouldn't know that by looking at it. This is perhaps one of the most visually impressive movies of the year. It's got a vivid color palette and camera use that is never boring. The makeup effects are realistic even when they're completely over the top. This movie has the look of a major studio production and millions and millions of dollars behind it.

The film starts showing us a hooker who is eventually raped. The intro of the movie is done with almost no dialogue and is told concisely. The intro ends and we are brought into the movie proper. It's 23 years later and we are introduced to Helen, the product of that rape. Or is she? Helen finds out she has a twin that died in utero and was absorbed by her body. It is implied that perhaps Helen wasn't the product of rape but perhaps the twin was. Anyways, the absorbed twin begins to take control of Helen body giving her blackouts.

If you're reading this and think it sounds silly, well this is a horror movie. Such silliness is more than welcome if it provides some solid scares and an interesting peak at what it means to be human. Perhaps, the twin isn't really taking control and maybe Helen's brain is using it as an excuse to attack those who have victimized her.

But that would be giving this story far too much credit. While I love this movie visually, its story has no depth besides, "bad twin gets out and does bad things!" any attempt to maybe use this bizarre situation to reflect upon the human condition is completely wasted. Part of it is how we have no real characters in this movie. They are just props that move the plot along. Even our main character, Helen just seems to be there to occasionally be taken over by her twin. All the other characters exist to be victims of these episodes. Even the ending turns into little more than a creature feature with the evil twin going on an apparent murder rampage.

The acting doesn't help at all. Some is serviceable and some is just downright bad. It's all rather disappointing. When so much good gets mixed with so much bad, it's tough to end up good overall. And that's where "Let Her Out" ends up. I almost want to recommend it as a visual spectacle, but in the end you'd have to watch the dreadful story. And that is something I cannot recommend.

What is inside you just wants to come out...
paul_haakonsen2 June 2017
"Let Her Out" caught my attention with two things; the first and most prominent thing was that it is a horror movie, of course. And the second thing was that the synopsis for the storyline seemed interesting and it could actually be a great movie.

I will say that I didn't really find this 2016 horror movie to be a particular masterwork piece within the horror genre. While the story was entertaining enough for what it was, then the movie was just suffering from being overly predictable and actually also being way too generic - leaning way too much up against many other horror movies. So it other words, it lacks originality.

There are some good enough moments throughout the course of "Let Her Out", mostly being the jump scares, but also the acting should be praised here. Alanna LeVierge really did carry the movie quite well with her performance as Helen.

"Let Her Out" is hardly a movie that will scare you out of your wits, but there are some creepy and spooky enough moments here and there to make it worthwhile to sit through the entire movie. However, "Let Her Out" just wasn't an outstanding or particularly memorable movie.

Nicely filmed and equally nicely edited, there is something oddly appealing about the movie in a strange way. And there are some rather interesting and somewhat disturbing visual scenes that were quite nice, and that was a definite boost in the right direction. Just a shame that the overall picture was so predictable and generic.

Helen's fall into madness was interesting enough, but the movie just didn't fully have what it took to be outstanding. But when the transformation scene took place, it just went down the drain so fast. While it looked nice and had great special effects, it was just, and let's be blunt here, too much!

This is hardly the type of movie that you will watch more than once, because the story doesn't have enough contents to sustain more than a single viewing.

My rating of "Let Her Out" settles on a 5 out of 10 stars. While "Let Her Out" certainly is entertaining enough for a single viewing, there are far better horror movies out there.

Toronto indie horror
SnoopyStyle19 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A girl prostitutes herself out of the Gemini Motel in Toronto. She is brutally raped and gets pregnant. She ends up stabbing herself in her belly. Twenty three years later, bike courier Helen and her best friend Molly are at the same motel when Helen gets hit by a car. As she recovers, she suffers from visions and experiences.

This small Toronto indie horror seems to touch on many of the horror tropes. The problem is that it never settles on one. It does plenty of stuff. There are some good body horrors. The actress is workmanlike. It has some good functional camera work. All the good work can't distinguish it from any number of other indie horrors. It's hard to care about her story.

Let me out
Saiph9029 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
What you have to do in films is create an empathy with the characters, a lot of films fail in this and you start wanting the people killed off, this is one of those films. Maybe it is me but everyone in the film irritates me, the acting is one dimensional and the plot has been done many times, the dead twin taking over the living sister, the problem is the total lack of dialogue, the plot at times makes no sense. The girl has a genetic growth in her brain and the hospital discharges her to run rampant through Toronto? if she can tie herself up the surely she must realise the evil sister can untie herself, why put a chair against the door to prevent the evil sister getting out, she will simply move the chair to one side. Not the worst but just lost interest in the story.

Pure crap
iainyg29 October 2017
Only reason i gave it two stars instead of one star, is because I couldn't be bothered changing channel and watched it all the way to the end, while trying to work out how to post my first review on this site, it was so bad I felt I had to post my very first review to warn horror lovers not to waste your time. I've watched some crap over the years and this is right up there. Don't make the same mistake as me, watch something else.

What a horribly paced and horrible acted pile of garbage. AVOID!
manuelasaez22 May 2018
I try so hard to give movies the benefit of the doubt, I really do. But movies like these just test my patience by failing in almost every possible regard. Everything from the grade school script and amateur directorial style, to the stulted and hilarious "acting" and poor pacing make this movie an absolute chore to get through. But what exactly happened?

Not a single person involved in this stopped to ask themselves, "Is this movie actually good?" or "Is what we are making entertaining?". I bet not a single person in that production company could be certain of the answers to either of those questions. So of course we end up with such an anemic script, such poor pacing, and such laughable acting. It's like there was no quality control.

The movie wasn't scary for the first hour or so, and then it was a bit entertaining and then it ended. It was a horror movie for a solid 10 minutes and then it was over. The rest was filler, decent gore that was hidden by poor angles, and a lot of fake blood splattered all over the place. But that alone does not a horror movie make. It just goes to show that some people really view the horror genre as the dumping grounds for the worst that cinema has to offer, and it's really a shame.

Aside for some bang up special effects work and some quality blood splatter, this movie was pointless, boring and tame (even when you consider just how graphic some of it is). These people need to learn that when you make a movie like this, you either go big or go home. Cut someone's salary and up the SFX budget. If your story and acting sucks, might as well pump your money into the only department that is actually getting anything done.

Avoid this movie like you broke the law and are hiding from the cops.

Terrible movie...
edwinchoy7 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I must admit is a terrible horror movie. I didn't expect much from this considering there was only one review and the rating was about average maybe did by some family or friend.

The plot has been done before - evil twin remnant left at childbirth wants a chance to live - but this one took it to the extreme, means so bad but bad of terrible

The acting was so terrible even they don't act they are a bunch of friends or neighbors The visuals were so bad make by a domestic home video

It's rare for me to find a movie so utterly disturbing because is so bad, even I got sleep the first minutes of this terrible movie. Most of the horror these days is just plain silly but this on is the king of the silly, seems kind of retard movie. I do not recommend this movie, but go in with very low expectations. You may be surprised like I was terrible do not waste your time.

I don't think I gave away much, but put a spoiler alert anyway.

The acting was excellent and so was the directing. The visuals were well done too.

It's rare for me to find a movie so utterly disturbing. Most of the horror these days is just plain silly. This one got my heart pumping and I actually felt the pain this woman was going through.

I recommend this movie, but go in with low expectations. You may be surprised like I was.

Cheap, digital, unpleasant
Leofwine_draca12 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Another cheap digital horror flick from Canada. LET HER OUT follows the old chestnut of a story, a woman who finds herself haunted by the dead spirit of her twin sister who died in the womb. This kind of thing has been done to death and in the hands of an insipid director and team this is nothing special either. It's a film that relies on cheap jump scares you see coming a mile off (you know, the ones preceded by long moments of sudden silence) and when they get bored of doing those they ladle on the gore to little effect.

nice surprise, i liked it
trashgang12 September 2017
Took me a while before I watched this one because just see the low ratings. really, I loved it and I even found it one of the better horrors of 2016. I agree, it isn't going to be for everyone.

Therefor you really must dig a bit of arty camera-work and editing but if you can pass that you are into a flick that gives you more horror then you expected. You can watch it as a straight horror or you can watch it like it's all about schizophrenia. If you do so there's more to catch. The problem is that I can't say too much about the story but it did work for me. And yes, some scene's are a rip- off of those Asian flicks like the black hair coming out of the mouth but towards the end the gore comes in.

Let Her Out, the title does says it all, was a nice surprise and it really cut into my flesh. Recommend it to all geeks.

I am coming
nogodnomasters13 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens at the Gemini Motel, Room 2, Toronto. Brooke Henderson plays a prostitute who is not into her work. In fact she takes payment after services are rendered which must be a Canadian thing, as "money up front" is the unwritten rule. After a few tricks, we see her take a scissors to her stomach. Flash forward to Helen (Alanna LeVierge) who was in her womb at the time. Helen has an accident and gets conked on the head. She starts to act strange and is diagnosed with a rare fetus in fetu...a fetus is growing in her brain putting pressure on the part that makes her do crazy things...a twin that was absorbed into her head. Oh wait Gemini...room 2 ...how clever was that? The film keeps you engaged for most of it. The explanation causes it to drag a little even as there is blood everywhere. The last motel room scene was excellent on the special effects except they stopped short and opted for hiding camera angles after giving us so much. A facial close up would have made the film.

Guide: F-word. Sex. Nudity (Brooke Henderson) Nominated best film Molins de Rei Horror Film Festival 2016

Stupidest movie I've seen since The Room
hayesjamesdr30 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
To delve into the details of why this movie is so bad would be a perfect waste of time, but I am going to anyway because I think it's hilarious. I watched the whole thing because after a while I just wanted to see what would happen. You'll find yourself asking so many questions like: why take a bicycle to go rescue your best friend? She really lives that close to the motel where her prostitute mom was raped and then stabbed herself to death? AND she and her best friend like to hang out there?? Or, can you really kill a man with a box cutter by stabbing him repeatedly in the chest? Or, why take the same bicycle back to where you came from when you could obviously just take the car? Why did a severed finger come out of her arm? Why did she throw up hair, the Twin wasn't in her stomach after all? Do they really make casts out of plaster anymore? Etc.

Here are a few other notes:

That's not how you slit your wrist, and everyone knows that by now.

If you're seriously going to commit suicide, get more than a half pint of vodka and a dozen pills.

If you want to run away from someone, do not try to escape out of the same window TWICE.

Just burn the painting if it bothers you so much.

Broken glass has a more interesting role in this movie than any actor.

What sort of doctor tells a patient they NEED brain surgery and sends them home for three days?

This movie is absolutely ridiculous. A junior high school creative writing student could conjure up a more interesting and less schlocky story.

Bad acting, annoying characters, super-unrealistic premises. Total train wreck of a movie. But, I'm not even angry about seeing it because I can tell others of how ludicrous and terrible it was!

Vanishing Twin Syndrome
Stevieboy66611 March 2019
This film starts off with a hooker having sex with various clients, including a rape Then she is seen pregnant, stabbing herself to death in the stomach. Move on 23 years and her daughter Helen is experiencing horrific visions, plus much physical horror. Canada does have a history of body horror and this is no exception: spewing long, black hair, self mutilation, pulling skin off. Etc. Very graphic. Japanese horror is also very evident in the form of a ghastly female with long, dark hair. If you like graphic horror then this does not disappoint. The only things that I didn't like were that the two female lead characters looked too similar, and the ending was slightly poor. Sadly the latter is quite common with 21st century horror movies.

Let this film in
bel0011 November 2017
Wasn't expecting much but hell this film turned out to be quit a ride. The story isn't really exceptional, twin sister 'lives' in the body of her sister and tries to get out, but it's told in a rather exciting way. Vivid colors, good editing, nice soundtrack: for those who loves their horror films to be a visual trip: this one is a feast. But also the story, a kind of schizophrenic Doctor Jekyl and Mister Hide history, is good enough to keep this film rolling. A good and inventive horror film, as it should be.

Run-of-the-mill horror title; tried to be "Smart" but mediocre sadly.
InfiniteInertia10 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I would probably not have bothered with this film, but a good friend REALLY wanted to see it, so we went and checked it out. At this point in modern film-making, there is nothing new under the sun...especially in the "Horror genre"...sadly that is also true of this title. The plot has been done before in 2009's "The Unborn" more or less, but this run through has 2 twin sisters, rather than a boy and a girl.

The beginning is OK, there does seem to be a supernatural basis to the origin of the individual who gets the ball rolling in the first 5 mins (pun intended), but this element is never really pursued again; if at all...then only in the final 20 minutes, but it is never specifically mentioned as such...merely by assumption.

There are your compulsory characters that serve no purpose other than to die! Obligatory annoying individuals who you wish would die (some do thankfully), littered throughout, along with the typical in the social media/see short attention span modern age; jump cuts that make up for not having sensible transition scenes between main scenes. To be fair the editing is probably the best part of this film, so they at least did a competent job of splicing all the celluloid together (if they even still do that?).

The acting is passable in the main. The 2 female leads do OK, but their friendship being not quite sisters/not quite lovers/who knows what, really fails to convince and you can almost see them switching out of character before the director yells "CUT!" in a handful of scenes. I had to laugh where she ties herself up thinking it will stop her nocturnal antics; as if she tied herself up...by definition she can untie herself!...Anyway if she was serious in any way about protecting those around her, she would have asked to be committed/observed...I mean seriously; the operation was in a couple of days for Christ sake! The ending is totally predictable, by 25 minutes in you know the next hour is a formality. There is no 1 memorable scene unless you like freakish transformation effects (barely there tbh), and I cannot think why anyone would want to see this more than once...so buying on DVD is a non-starter.

With so many other horror titles available, including a back catalogue of quality films from 60s/70s/80s, it is hard to recommend this film for any particular reason. If you're watching cable TV late and are too lazy to reach for the remote...check it out...Maybe!

Let Her Out
robfollower24 March 2020
There is something interesting about how this one progresses, as we have that feeling of mystery in the way it is taken. Alanna LeVierge does a great job here as the protagonist on whom the movie is focused as the others just becomes random additions in comparison - she surely makes us feel the protagonist's pain and sadness, and it is something which is not that common among these horror movies which are rather less noticed. The movie also has its scares, and with a dark setting, and with the protagonist having to face all these alone, there is the certainty of terror. A horror movie with an emotional side is nice - they never really try to develop on that situation of no hope though. There are also those moments which make us wonder if it is all in the mind - that is also a probability in these kinds of movies, isn't it? At least up-to an extent - after all, there was a trauma there. There should be a day when these lesser known, lower budget horror movies should rise above the big ones.

Let Her Out is the flick that will have enough for most people looking for more horror fun, as evil once again finds a way.

Release date: 25th August 2016 Running time: 89 minutes Directed by: Cody Calahan Starring: Alanna LeVierge, Nina Kiri, Adam Christie, Kate Fenton, Michael Lipka, Brooke Henderson, Glen Reid, Deborah Jayne Reilly Smith, Kyle Hytonen, Paul McGinnis, Eric Picard, Rachel Sellan, Heather Dicke, Kerstin Bradler, Michael Francavilla 8/10

It's alright
richardwworkman18 December 2020
I wasn't expecting much given some of the reviews on here but this is a pretty entertaining film.

Yes it's not original. Yeah it reuses a load of ideas and I felt like i had seen this before but there's a bit of body horror, a bit of gore and a few jump scares.

Not the greatest horror film ever made but no way near as bad as some of the reviews. Worth watching.
