As a TV writer with no huge overall deal at a major studio, Morenike Balogun (How to Get Away With Murder, Big Sky) was hit hard by the historic 148-day writers strike in 2023.

And with the start of the new year came the Palisades Fire, which has burned through more than 23,000 acres of the Palisades in Los Angeles County, including Balogun’s dream home, which she and her husband had been renovating.

“I saved my pennies to be able to afford this dream house in our dream location,” Balogun, whose other credits include Vampire Academy, Jupiter’s Legacy and Berlin Station, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “They say, ‘Buy the worst house on the block’ and fix it up, so that’s what we did. Every Episode of Netflix's Supacell Season 1, Ranked
Image
Supacell delivered a fresh superhero story that immediately grabbed attention with a thrilling concept and spectacularly executed episodes in the first season. Netflix has tried several times to get into the superhero genre of TV shows. While they initially found great success with Marvel's Daredevil and a handful of related shows that didn't perform as well, Marvel eventually reclaimed their IP and left Netflix scrambling for a replacement. Again, the streaming giant found success with The Umbrella Academy, a series based on comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, but with that show now concluded, they are again searching for another super show.

Along the way, Netflix has commissioned a number of smaller graphic novel adaptations, including Jupiter's Legacy, I Am Not Okay With This, and Dead Boy Detectives, but all of these shows were canceled after just one season due to not hitting the goals Netflix hoped for. However,...

Image
Since it took the streaming scene by storm, Netflix has had some great shows available on its service. However, as soon as the streaming giant became known for its quality prestige dramas, it also became quite notorious for canceling some of its best shows without any rhyme or reason, despite some of them being fan favorites.

Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter || Netflix

Mindhunter is one of those shows that needed more love from Netflix, but instead ended up being shelved for good. Of course, this had quite the reaction from fans, who were a little miffed about shows like Jupiter’s Legacy and Mindhunter being canceled, while other more subpar shows get renewed again and again.

There is no way that Mindhunter is going to come back, reveals David Fincher Bill and Holden in Mindhunter || Netflix

Despite having two brilliant seasons that fans adored, Mindhunter will not be getting a third season.

Hollywood's Next Big Comic Book Movie Will Make The Boys Look Like Sesame Street
Image
On August 16, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that comic writer Garth Ennis has written a script for a movie adaptation of his comic series "Crossed". Ennis' "Crossed" script has been acquired by the indie production company Six Studios.

These days, Ennis is most known as co-creator of "The Boys" (alongside artist Darick Robertson), the vicious superhero parody that's become one of Prime Video's premier programs. If you think "The Boys" can indulge in ultra violence and bad taste, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Published by Avatar Press, "Crossed" has well over 100 issues to its name, spread out over various mini-series and the long-running "Crossed: Badlands." Alan Moore even wrote the "Crossed +100" installment. What is this horror tale of epic length about? "Crossed" is basically Ennis' take on a zombie apocalypse.

In "Crossed," a pandemic sweeps the world that robs people of empathy and inhibition. The infected turn into raging sadists, their...

Supacell Challenges Netflix’s Superhero Show Cancellation Trend
Supacell (2024)
Netflix, the streaming giant known for its high production output, has struggled to maintain successful superhero series in recent years. However, the newly released “Supacell” may be poised to change this trend, boasting a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and strong audience engagement.

The streaming platform has a history of canceling superhero shows prematurely, often after just one or two seasons, despite positive reviews and dedicated fan bases. Notable casualties include “I Am Not Okay With This,” “Jupiter’s Legacy,” “Lockwood & Co.,” “Warrior Nun,” and “Raising Dion.” Even the successful “The Umbrella Academy” is set to conclude after its fourth season, with a planned spin-off already scrapped.

Netflix’s cancellation decisions are reportedly based on metrics such as total views and completion rates. The latter may be particularly crucial for superhero shows, which typically require larger budgets due to special effects. Competing with established superhero content on other platforms like...

New Superhero Show With 100% On Rotten Tomatoes Can Finally Fix A Major Netflix Problem That Got 5 Shows Canceled Already
Image
Netflix struggles with superhero shows, often canceling them prematurely despite positive reception. Completion rates may be a key factor in cancelations, with superhero shows requiring larger budgets than normal. Supacell could break the superhero curse, receiving high praise and strong viewership.

Netflix is a production powerhouse, but when it comes to superhero shows, it frequently cancels the shows prematurely. However, with the recent release of Supacell, a show that has garnered glowing reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, hopefully Netflix will break the tradition. Netflix is one of the biggest production companies in the world, but it also has an extremely high churn rate. Obviously, not every show becomes a hit, and Netflix needs to keep a close eye on shows that are worth the budget, and those that are not.

But, some of the cancelations from the streaming giant have baffled audiences when shows develop strong fanbases and receive rave reviews.

Netflix's New Superhero Series With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Becomes Global Hit
Image
Supacell, a new Netflix superhero show, is gaining global popularity with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and now a place on Netflix's global charts. The series focuses on a group of Black South Londoners with superpowers, connected by their history of sickle cell disease. Created and directed by Rapman, the show's success may lead to a season 2.

Supacell, the new Netflix superhero show with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, is shaping up to be a global hit. Although the superhero genre is fairly established on the big screen, with the MCU and the Dcu taking the lead, the television streaming landscape has been more experimental. Prime Video has The Boys and Invincible. Hulu has the adult comedy Extraordinary, while HBO's The Franchise will debut later this year. Now, after the high-profile disappointment of its Jupiter's Legacy adaptation, Netflix seems to have success with the British thriller Supacell.

Millie Bobby Brown’s Upcoming Netflix Film Leaves Fans Fuming With Rage Over 1 Thing That Could Have Saved David Fincher’s Masterpiece

Netflix has a slew of shows that are coming to an end, which opens up a lot of pillars for a new line of content that Netflix must produce to get subscribers to its service. This has caused Netflix to invest a lot of money into newer projects, to develop new IPs. However, fans are enraged that the money that is being put into newer shows was not used to complete fan-favorite properties and other projects that fans are more interested in.

Enola Holmes || Netflix

Millie Bobby Brown’s upcoming IP for Netflix, which also stars Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, and Giancarlo Esposito, allegedly has a budget of $300 million, with The Russo Brothers helming the project. However, fans believe this money could have been better spent on another Netflix property, one that could have retained more fans.

What the New Netflix Data Dump Reveals
Image
Today, Netflix released viewership data for the second half of 2023. The numbers shine a light on what worked, what flopped, and how Netflix may move forward in the future.

Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com ‘One Piece’ to Rule Them All

The most-watched show on Netflix in the second half of 2023 was “One Piece.” The live-action remake of an anime classic racked up an incredible 71.6 million views and over 541 million hours. The easy conclusion is that Netflix should greenlight more live-action remakes of anime shows, right? Well, maybe not.

One of Netflix’s most high-profile flops was the live-action “Cowboy Bebop,” which hit the platform in November 2021. Although it hit the Netflix Top 10 list for three weeks, the show declined 59% in viewing hours from its second week to its third. Netflix canceled the show less than a month after its debut.

Netflix’s remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was a hit this year.

Netflix’s Fool Me Once: A Wronged Woman Breaks Bad

Netflix has cranked out adaptations of Harlan Coben’s novels almost as quickly as he can write them. Eight series currently make up the “Harlan Coben Collection” on the streamer, and there are still six slots left in his 14-series deal. The Millar-verse may have stalled out after Jupiter’s Legacy, but the Coben Collection just keeps growing (to say nothing of his literary empire).

Is 47 Ronin 2 With Keanu Reeves Still Happening? Actually, The Sequel Was Already Released
Image
Keanu Reeves has been at the forefront of some of cinema's most important franchises, including "The Matrix" and "John Wick." Even one of his biggest bombs has, against all odds, also become a franchise. Reeves starred in Universal's tremendously expensive blockbuster "47 Ronin" back in 2013. It was a major flop at the time and actually hurt the actor's career a bit. But nearly a full decade later, everything came full circle, and a sequel to that flop was released. Yes, was! As in, it already came out ... last year.

"Blade of the 47 Ronin" is a sequel to the movie in question, and debuted in 2022. One would be forgiven for not realizing it, as it wasn't quite as big as the original, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, Reeves didn't return for the follow-up, but for those who enjoyed that film, there is a sequel out there you can watch right now.

Invincible Proves That A Good Superhero Show Doesn't Need Well-Known Characters
Image
Modern movies and TV lead many to assume established characters make for better content, like the MCU or Dcu. Invincible broke the mold thanks to its unique methods that set itself apart from other hit properties. Invincible's unique lore and deep themes offer something that many comic book fans don't get enough of in movies and TV.

Invincible's second season solidifies Amazon Prime Video's commitment to the superhero show. The Image Comics property might not have previously been a household name, but it has begun to build a cult following based on the impressive animation, moving narrative, and star-studded voice cast of the first season. Indeed, Amazon may have a bona fide franchise on its hands, demonstrating that just like with The Boys, it knows exactly what to do with a superhero franchise. However, Invincible really shuns the trends when it comes to establishing a superhero series outside of the major brands.

‘Daredevil’ Reboot Called Out as ‘Old Disney Scam’ by Showrunner of Original Netflix Series
Steven S. DeKnight
Steven DeKnight, known for the Netflix version of “Daredevil” and “Jupiter’s Legacy,” has called Disney+’s upcoming reboot of the superhero drama an “old Disney scam.”

In 2022, it was announced that Disney+ would be moving forward with its own Daredevil series, titled “Daredevil: Born Again.” Though the series will see Charlie Cox reprise his role as the blind superhero, it will largely involve a different creative team than the one behind the Netflix original.

“It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to first season. Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed!” DeKnight wrote on X.

The filmmaker’s post was part of a conversation about HBO’s recent cancelation of “Winning Time.” In response to the news that the series was cancelled after its second season, a NYC-based IATSE grip asked if he had to “post...

Juror No. 2 Cast, Plot, Director, And More Info
Image
Move over, "Jury Duty," there's another twist-filled jury story in town. This time it's "Juror No. 2," the upcoming movie from veteran filmmaker Clint Eastwood. Eastwood is in his 90s now, but age hasn't stopped the prolific actor-turned-filmmaker from working on new stories to bring to the silver screen. Though the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike means "Juror No. 2" has currently suspended filming, the Eastwood picture is still in the works -- and it sounds like it has the potential to be one of the most riveting movies he's made in a while.

When it comes to Eastwood the director, your mileage may vary. The nonagenarian star has certainly made some fantastic projects in his impressive lifetime, from Oscar winners "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby" to "Mystic River" and "The Bridges of Madison County." His most recent projects, though, including 2021's "Cry Macho" and "Richard Jewell," weren't wholeheartedly embraced by critics and audiences.

One Piece Director Marc Jobst On Adapting the Unadaptable
Image
This article contains spoilers for One Piece episode 1.

Marc Jobst has built a rich career out of the wide variety of heightened genre television that he’s directed. Jobst was involved with some of the strongest original Marvel series on Netflix like Daredevil and The Punisher, while also tackling some of the streaming service’s other prestige fantasy properties like The Witcher and Jupiter’s Legacy. Jobst has dabbled in some extremely exciting worlds across these many series, but none compare to the epic undertaking that he’s experienced in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of anime sensation, One Piece.

Marc Jobst, working alongside One Piece’s executive producers Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, has helped bring to life a special world of superpowered pirates that many said was impossible. Jobst directed One Piece’s first two episodes and in honor of the show’s premiere, he gets candid with Den of...

Netflix’s One Piece Breaks The Live-Action Anime Curse
Image
This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s One Piece.

Film and television adaptations of stories from other media consistently face uphill battles. Even the most faithful of adaptations can ruffle the feathers of the source material’s die-hard fans or lead audiences to question the point of the adaptation in the first place. Anime and manga have had an even harder time on this front as their live-action adaptations not only have to figure out how to ostensibly bring cartoons to life, but also take into consideration a multitude of sensitive cultural issues.

Audiences are used to writing off live-action anime adaptations after decades of being burnt by projects like Dragon Ball Evolution, Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and this year’s Knights of the Zodiac, with live-action versions of Yu Yu Hakusho and My Hero Academia already in development. Even when Japan produces decent live-action anime features like Gintama,...

Netflix seems to be tired of people asking, “What is a Netflix show?”

In a letter to shareholders Wednesday, it attempted an answer. What it came up with is that a hit Netflix show is, well, a hit Netflix show. You know, like, “Beef, “Queen Charlotte,” “Love Is Blind” or “The Night Agent” — any show that “super-serves the audience,” as the company put it.

Tautologies aside, it might have a point. Viewers tuned in, and subscribers paid up, to the tune of 5.9 million net new additions in the June quarter. Whether that was because Netflix started cracking down on password sharing in earnest or because its popular shows were popular, Netflix has reached a critical mass that transcends tentpoles, franchises and familiar brands.

“Kids today watch Netflix and...

How ‘Sing 2’ Made the Case for Netflix to Get Into Live Sports
Image
Forget the Chris Rock live-standup success or the “Love Is Blind” reunion’s epic failure: The real benchmark to Netflix exploring live sports should be based on… Universal “Sing 2.”

That’s the argument made Thursday morning by media analysts at MoffettNathanson; before you think we subscribe to some quack research, let Michael Nathanson explain his position.

Though you may know (and subscribe to) Netflix for original hits like “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday,” and “Bridgerton,” its massive library is comprised primarily of acquired film and TV content. Those third-party leftovers account for more than half of the time viewed on Netflix in the U.S. Compared to your average original series or movie, libraries are a stable, predictable, safe, and successful setup.

“The main value of acquired is its dependability,” Nathanson wrote in a note to clients (and obtained by IndieWire). “Titles are already made and already proven… There is little...

Grammy-Winning Composer Stephanie Economou Talks Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken
Image
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a joyful movie that blends mythical monster mayhem with the ever-relatable teenage experience, even as it turns the myth of the terrifying kraken on its head. This newest DreamWorks Animation project boasts a fantastic cast that includes Lana Condor, Sam Richardson, Toni Collette, Jane Fonda, and Will Forte, and benefits from the direction of Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’s new take on its titular monster seemingly inspired an animation style different from previous DreamWorks Animation films, and did the same in regard to the music.

Grammy-winning film, television, and video game composer Stephanie Economou wrote the Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken main theme and musical score, and took the music to as many exciting places as Ruby Gillman herself visits in the film. Economou’s score for Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken was influenced by synth- and dream pop, though her background...

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Shares Its Monstrously Good Main Theme [Exclusive]
Image
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken brings a new kind of monster into the DreamWorks universe. The unique spin on popular mythology portrays krakens as anything but the hungry ship-eaters they are understood to be, with the titular Ruby Gillman and her family simply doing their best to live some semblance of a normal life on land. The film joyfully subverts expectations and, in true DreamWorks fashion, boasts enough heart and humor to be enjoyable for the whole family.

The film aims to blend sweeping mythological concepts with the reality of being a teenager, and smoothly accomplishes its goal with the help of music by Grammy-winning composer Stephanie Economou. Economou is known for work on a range of projects including Jupiter’s Legacy and Manhunt, but thanks to a long history of collaboration with composer Harry Gregson-Williams has also worked on beloved films like The Martian and the live-action Mulan. 'The Chosen One' Trailer: Witness a Miracle
Image
While Mark Millar has seen mixed results with adaptations of his work - 2021's Jupiter's Legacy was met with less than favorable reviews before being swiftly canceled after its first season - that hasn't stopped Netflix moving forward with other Millarworld projects. The latest of these is The Chosen One, an adaptation of Millar and Peter Gross's American Jesus. Released back in 2004 under the name Chosen, the comic book followed a twelve-year-old boy who discovers he has the powers of Jesus Christ, and is destined to face the Antichrist. First announced back in 2018, the series is finally hitting Netflix on August 16, with a trailer having now been released.
