The 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots have returned to haunt local authorities in the Uttar Pradesh district with the upcoming film, Shorgul, being made on it.
The film is based on 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots and going by recent news it will not be screened in the Uttar Pradesh district, along with other cities like Meerut, Kandla and Bhavani.
With hardly a few days left for its release, the Muzaffarnagar district magistrate has decided not to allow screening of the Jimmy Shergill and Ashutosh Rana starrer.
“Since it is a sensitive issue, the district authorities are worried that it might reopen old wounds and lead to violence. That’s why they are not in favour of allowing the film to enter theatres in Muzaffarnagar,” says a film distribution source.

Based on a few real life incidents, the upcoming film Shorgul starring Jimmy Sheirgill, Sanjay Suri, Ashutosh Rana has been caught up in the midst of a controversy. Reportedly, the film has been banned in Muzzafarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, since the film is allegedly based on 2013 Muzzafarnagar riots.
Recent reports suggest that an Fir filed by Up politician Sangeet Som alleged that the character played by Jimmy Sheirgill resembles the characteristics of him, an accused in the riot. However, co-producer of the film Vyas Verma maintained that the film is not based any particular incident but a combination of varied real life incidents with Uttar Pradesh as the backdrop. Expressing his regret over the recent ban of the film in Muzzafarnagar, he also added that he wants to question the authority over this decision.
Directed by Jitendra Tiwari and P.Singh, Shorgul is slated to release on July 15.
