This is great news if you're a fan of Jimmy Henderson's action films, Jailbreak and The Prey. Yes, the team is still working on developing the sequel to Jailbreak, but, they're taking a break from that to film another action flick they're calling Ktv - Killing Time Violently. What a cool title. And the promo image envokes a sort of Die Hard vibe and if it is multi-level sort of affair, as the tall building in the background suggests, then a comparison to The Raid will be inescapable. On his first day of work, Mak, an estranged father gets caught up in a gang raid at a local club. Mak must use his skills as a reformed bar-brawler to find a way out and...

Anyone wanting signs that film production is alive and kicking in some parts of the world – and not only the most obvious – need go no further than Locarno’s Match Me!
A networking event, expanded this year from 24 to 32 producers and fortified by the first-time presence of France, Match Me! focuses on emerging producers.
Featuring new projects from tracked auteurs – Lithuania’s Ignas Jonynas, India’s Payal Kapadia and Mexico’s Francisco Vargas – and winners at Cannes, San Sebastian and other major meets, many producers look only a title or two from full emergence.
If the fulsome slates of some producers are anything to go by – Dr’s Leticia Brea, Estonia’s Tallifornia and Kask Films, for instance – production is a going concern in countries outside traditional production centers..
Out of necessity or ambition, producers are scaling up, pushing ever more into genre and reaching out to production partners and talent from around the world.

Stars: Andrew Lee Potts, Jean Paul Ly, James Warren, Steven Blades, Spencer Collings | Written and Directed by Tom Paton
It seems like just 57 days ago that I was writing my review of G-Loc, starring the ever so awesome Casper Van Dien and I wondered for the most briefest of moments how long it would be before Paton was back on set. Turns out that ship had sailed and 400 Bullets was coming out! After making the move from the potato fields to an actual physical soundstage with Goldfinch Studios, Tom and his Dop (and soulmate) George Burt decided to put bricks and mortar to the relationship that had been building with producer Steve Mosley as they built their own studio.
We have seen this team tackle post apocalyptic, vampires, elder gods, a timey-wimey staircase and space colonization… So I guess it was high time we added some all out butt-kicking action to the repertoire with 400 Bullets.

The martial arts genre has been in a significant decline for many years now, with just a few entries here and there over the years, reminding us of its existence essentially, although gems like The Raid, Jailbreak etc occasionally come to the fore. A number of Asian martial arts superstars have already moved to Hollywood or other countries in the west, with the same applying to the action stars, at least those who have not moved to China. The Chinese industry releases action blockbusters quite frequently, most of which, however, are of doubtful quality, to say the least, with the combination of the aforementioned, making the current list one of the most difficult to compile. Nevertheless, 10 films were found in the end, although a number of them are mostly here for the impressiveness of the action scenes and not their quality overall.

“The Prey” takes the classic “The Most Dangerous Game” scenario for a spin in the Cambodian jungle. Centered on a wrongly jailed cop being stalked by cashed-up creeps who get their kicks by hunting humans, this survival thriller doesn’t bring anything significantly new to the table but the frequency and quality of its gunplay and martial arts combat should keep most action fans happy. Directed, edited and co-written by Italian expat Jimmy Henderson, whose 2017 prison smackdown “Jailbreak” marked him as a talent to watch and was snapped up by Netflix, “The Prey” debuted at the Busan Film Fetival in 2018 and will open in select North American virtual cinemas on Aug. 21. VOD streaming commences on August 25.
Trumpeted as Cambodia’s first million-dollar action movie, “The Prey” can’t match “Jailbreak” for sheer excitement but does suggest that with more original and ambitious material Henderson could become a real force in Asian genre cinema.

Will “Jailbreak 2” be a battle between two different styles of traditional Southeast Asian martial arts?
The question will be answered when the sequel hits the big screen! Though the exact release date is still unknown since it will only begin production in 2021.
The Hollywood Reporter brought word that director Jimmy Henderson will be back to helm the sequel, with Jean Paul Ly, Dara Our and Tharoth Sam returning to star.
Also joining them in the upcoming movie, which currently goes by the title “Jailbreak: Round 2”, are Indonesian martial arts stars Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman.
This won’t be the duo’s first gig together as they’ve both previously worked on Indonesia’s much praised “The Raid” franchise and Hollywood titles such as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”.

It seems like the new center of martial arts movies has shifted a bit towards the West, and currently resides in the Asean countries, as films like “The Raid” (Indonesia), “Jailbreak” (Cambodia), “Buybust” (Philippines) etc. prove. This time, it was Malaysia’s turn to produce an entry in the category, with the creators of “Wira” approaching their project in the nominal way, giving the martial arts direction to Yayan Ruhian, who, after his success in “The Raid” has moved to Hollywood, being part of productions like “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “John Wick 3”. Furthermore, casting Dain Said in the role of the main villain was definitely a good decision, with the veteran director inducing the film with a sense that could be easily perceived as cult.

The Irish have put up with a lot of bullshit over the years. There’s England. The Troubles. The kittening of the Celtic Tiger. Enya. It’s not been an easy history. And black people, those living in mostly white countries anyway, they’ve put up with a whole bunch of bullshit, too. So if we pretend there’s an iota of depressing truth being bandied about when, in Roddy Doyle’s novel The Commitments, the irrepressible yet wee bit naïve protagonist Jimmy says that the Irish are the blacks of Europe,...

Buenos Aires — The last few years have caught Ventana Sur – Cannes Festival and Market’s biggest initiative outside France – taking place as the industry debated radical change. This year saw the Latin American industries in a state of transformation themselves, wracked by headwinds – Jair Bolsonaro’s government in Brazil – or looking to take advantage of negative scenarios, such as the Argentine peso plunge against the dollar.
But Ventana Sur is weathering these storms. Expanding from its film base into growth areas for the film industry – genre, animation, and now drama series and social media via a bolstered conference focus under co-director Ralph Haiek – Ventana Sur has evolved into an invaluable fixture in a round-the-year sales and co-production movie business, accelerating trading and expanding companies’ contact bases. Chile’s Storyboard Media produces the feature, with co-founders Carlos Núnez and Gabriela Sandoval executive producing and Calibre 71 and Enlazo Capital Films co-producing out of Chile and Colombia respectively.
Fox will distribute theatrically in Chile starting in 2020.
The political thriller is a 130-minute nail-biter based on the real-life events which proceeded one of Chile and the world’s greatest prison escapes on Jan. 29, 1990. Despite years of admirable effort, Nashville’s attempts to rock out can still tend to come off pretty hammy. Then you get something like “Mess With My Head,”a searing standout from Miranda Lambert’s seventh LP, Wildcard. Over sleek drums and noir guitars, the country queen unspools steamy psychodrama, singing about her mind as a luxury hotel suite open for 2 a.m. room service: “I know why I gave the keys to you,” she intones, before a chorus that sounds like Sheryl Crow under the influence of Hole’s Celebrity Skin.

“BuyBust” is a superbly executed action film about drug squad members fighting for their lives in a maze-like Manila slum that resembles nothing less than hell on earth. Director and co-writer Erik Matti has delivered an explosive exercise in kinetic cinema that also offers potent commentary on the devastating social consequences of the Philippine government’s war on drugs. Following its world premiere at New York Asian Film Festival, “BuyBust” will become a must-see item for genre fans. It looks certain to spark controversy and attract large audiences when it releases locally Aug. 1, and should enjoy a successful run in selected North American cities from Aug. 10. Worldwide Netflix rollout is set for Nov. 1.
“BuyBust” barely digs into the background of any characters and doesn’t need to. All we need to know is that Drug Enforcement Agency recruit Nina Manigan (Anne Curtis) is the sole survivor of a team that...

Revolving around a rural fiend's pursuit for revenge against a middle-class professional whose self-righteous act landed him incarcerated, Indian director Amit Dubey's thriller could be readily described as Cape Fear on the Mekong. Produced by Jimmy Henderson, who has already made three genre movies (the comical action-thriller Hanuman, the horror-romance of The Forest Whispers and the martial-arts spectacle of Jailbreak) in Cambodia, Mind Cage also showcases the visual and technical opportunities the Southeast Asian country now offers to foreign and local filmmakers.

Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.
For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

Witnessing the continued growth of the many talented in the stunt and screenfighting community has certainly proven rewarding. Martial arts exponent, actor Jean-Paul Ly (Now You See Me 2, Lucy, Doctor Strange) is especially an example given some of his recent efforts, including shortfilms like Colin Emmerson's 007-inspired Sapphire and Donnie Yen-style action nod, Dead End, the latter which I posted as my first entry here at ScreenAnarchy earlier this year. I personally pride myself on following projects like these as they've now led us to what now lies ahead for Ly and fellow actor and martial artist, Hanuman star Dara Our. Their new pairing for Hanuman helmer Jimmy Henderson's latest thrilling action follow-up, Jailbreak, is coming full speed ahead with its local buzz in...
