Chicago – The rise of David Dastmalchian is going into the stratosphere in 2021. The actor, with roots in Chicago theater, opened this weekend (8/6/21) in the film “The Suicide Squad” as the melancholic Polka-Dot Man, and will be featured later in the year in the highly anticipated new film version of “Dune.” His comic book roots have distinct credibility, as he also helped to create the Dark Horse Comics series ”Count Crowley”, which recently was green-lit for a second series.

For this writer, it has been really cool to see actor David Dastmalchian’s career take off ever since we saw him portray one of Joker’s henchmen in The Dark Knight. Since then, he’s appeared in the Ant-Man films and several of Denis Villeneuve’s previous projects (Prisoners and Blade Runner 2049), he’s co-starred in several television series, and genre fans should recognize Dastmalchian from his work in films like Sushi Girl and The Belko Experiment. David even thrilled horror fans everywhere with his portrayal of Dr. Fearless, his vampiric host of the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, earlier this year. And as if all of that wasn’t enough, Dastmalchian is celebrating his latest role in The Suicide Squad as well as his vocal work in both parts of Batman: The Long Halloween and Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune adaptation as well.

Name a major comic-book film franchise and, odds are, actor David Dastmalchian is part of it. “The Dark Knight”? Dastmalchian’s first film role, playing one of the Joker’s thugs. The Marvel Cinematic Universe? He’s had a recurring part in Peyton Reed’s “Ant-Man” features from the start, playing superhero Scott Lang’s crime-loving pal Kurt. He’s even made the jump to TV, thanks to recurring roles on Fox’s “Gotham” prequel series and The CW’s “The Flash.” Soon, he’ll voice his MCU part in Disney+’s ambitious “What If?” animated series.
Next up: his beefiest superhero role yet, starring in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” as the haunted Polka-Dot Man, whose awkward “powers” — throwing toxic polka-dots at people — mask a dark backstory befitting Dastmalchian’s dramatic chops. No one is more amused than Dastmalchian about the impact superhero movies have had on his career,...

Tilda Swinton and daughter Honor Swinton Byrne play mother and daughter in writer-director Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir, which took the World Cinema – Dramatic prize at the Sundance Film Festival, where it debuted in January. In fact, the filmmaking team already is readying their follow-up even as the first installment heads to several theaters this weekend via A24. Roadside Attractions took rights to Telluride premiere Trial by Fire last fall. Starring Laura Dern and Jack O’Connell, the title takes on the death penalty, based on a true story. Amazon Studios is heading out with Sundance debut Photograph by Ritesh Batra in over a half-dozen markets, while Magnolia Pictures is going day-and-date with sci-fi title Aniara, which it acquired out of last year’s Toronto. The current controversy over Georgia’s restrictive new abortion laws, and resulting calls to withdraw Hollywood coin from that state, have underlined the political-shuffleboard nature of U.S. location shoots. Coincidentally arriving at the same time is “All Creatures Here Below,” the first feature to take advantage of Kansas City, Mo.’s filmmaker tax incentive, which is unusual in that it’s a strictly municipal rather than statewide ordinance.
That fiscal footnote may wind up being the most memorable thing about this sophomore feature by director Collin Schiffli, whose debut, “Animals,” was also a collaboration with scenarist-star David Dastmalchian. It’s a decently acted and crafted drama that nonetheless seems built on a foundation of phony pathos, revolving around doomed lovers whose fate seems more a matter of contrived miserabilism than authenticity. Goldwyn is opening the indie at 10 theaters across the nation on May 17, simultaneous with VOD launch.

Actor David Dastmalchian is one of those guys that you’ve seen in a million films but probably never could remember his name. David Dastmalchian is not an immediately recognisable name. But you will know his body of work which includes The Dark Knight, Prisoners and also Ant-Man proving he is no ordinary guy from Kansas.
All Creatures Here Below sees the actor taking on scriptwriting duties in a thought provoking indie drama that marks a homecoming, of sorts, with the entire shoot taking place in Kansas.
From the offset we are introduced to a young couple in a rough neighbourhood just trying to survive. Ruby is a cleaner in some form of government programme and after being re-assigned to a different post is only concerned about whether or not she will still get her food stamps. And it is after Gensan (David Dastmalchian) loses his job where things start to get interesting.
We go from a cock-fight that is raided by the police to Gensan killing the guy trying to escape with the money.

The two are deeply connected, but struggle to survive on nothing with hopes of making a family, complicating their journey to freedom. Karen Gillan co-stars with Dastmalchian, and the small indie cast includes Jennifer Morrison, Richard Cabral, and David Koechner. The new trailer for the indie drama All Creatures Here Below gives us the first look at actors Karen Gillan and David Dastmalchian, a young couple that is on the run after an impulsive crime.
Gillan and Dastmalchian, who are both members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, show a different side of their acting chops as the aforementioned young couple. Gensan (Dastmalchian) and Ruby (Gillan) struggle to thrive in the face of abject poverty. When Gensan loses his job and is forced to break the law they escape and seek refuge in Kansas City, a place Ruby’s deeply afraid of. Ruby’s indelible choices, and desire to make a family, complicate their journey to freedom.
The film also stars Jennifer Morrison, John Doe, Richard Cabral, and David Koechner. Amy Greene, Chris Stinson and Nacho Arenas serve as producers.

The following article contains minor spoilers for “Blade Runner 2049.”
In addition to a pair of memorable performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, cinematographer Roger Deakins’ stunning visual work, and director Denis Villeneuve’s dystopian vision, “Blade Runner 2049” has one more element worthy of excitement: a supporting cast of new and rising stars. Many of them have already made their mark on indie cinema, like the perpetually working David Dastmalchian or the irreverent Carla Juri, while others will likely use Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic as a springboard for even bigger careers (like Ana de Armas, the film’s biggest find).
