Meddling with love
TheLittleSongbird9 December 2022
Have liked Niall Matter and Rachel Boston, both Hallmark regulars, in other things. Was less sure of the premise, which was another one that could go either way of charming and fun or contrived and dumb, was really hoping it would be the former and Hallmark have made unappealing premises work. Was also not crazy about most of the 2016 June Wedding Hallmark films, with the best one by far being 'Wedding Bells' (the only one this reviewer liked to be honest). So expectations were not high.

Also regrettably did not have a particularly high opinion of 'Stop the Wedding'. It is another film that does little to make the premise more appealing, though it does start off quite well and has some amusing moments, and have also seen better performances from Matter and particularly Boston. 'Stop the Wedding' is not a terrible film and is much better than 'The Convenient Groom' and especially 'Ms Matched' (really disliked both those films), but 'Wedding Bells' it is not.

It does have good things. Although Matter has been better elsewhere with more likeable characters, he still comes off quite well and does well not overplaying or going through the motions (not an easy thing to achieve with the type of character he has). Alan Thicke was quite fun and makes the most of what he is given to work with.

Did also think that 'Stop the Wedding' started with some promise, with some easy going charm and amusement. It is pleasingly filmed with a nice setting and didn't have a problem with the film musically either, other Hallmark films have fared far worse in this aspect.

'Stop the Wedding' has a number of debits. Boston badly overacts with too many exaggerated mannerisms and some very shouty line delivery. Also really didn't like her character, who comes over as really selfish and at times whiny, and she and Matter never seem at ease together, with their chemistry too strained and at times trying too hard for laughs. Their relationship is very implausibly rushed very early on, which badly undoes the film, with too much of a known each other for years vibe almost instantaneously when it was obvious that it was meant to really the opposite.

The story is very messy and erratically paced, after a promising start too many developments are rushed, leaving things far fetched and confused, and then halfway through the plotting thinned out. It also became increasingly predictable and became little more than a mundane cobbling together of typical Hallmark cliches and very forced and try too hard wacky humour that has been seen before. The dialogue is awkward and cheesy, especially in the comedic moments later on, and motivations are left very vague or extreme (both in the case of the reasoning for the wedding stopping).

Concluding, watchable but tries too hard. 5/10.

Just your average hallmark movie

Warning: Spoilers
I find hallmark movie enjoyable but this plot was like the others the main characters don't want his dad and her aunt to get married, aunt finds out gets mad and the other characters changes their mind the end. Overall watchable stories but the two main characters were annoying.

It's like the writers aren't even trying anymore
jiaidc26 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you are writing for a 2 hour movie, why do you have two weddings in the last five minutes?

Most of the movie involves a senior wedding and whether it is right to marry so impulsively. Finally, after the whole movie they stage a three minute wedding - this your reward for the last hour and 55 minutes. The wedding couldn't be stretched to a whole 5 minutes, because they added another wedding for the last two minutes.

If that isn't enough, Alan Thicke is a total load in this movie. He is patting himself on the back through this movie on how skilled an actor he is.

This movie plays like actors had some free time and just wanted to make a quick buck.

I really enjoy watching Rachel Boston, but this wasn't a good vehicle.

Oh dear

I would have enjoyed this film a lot more, if only Rachel Boston would stop shouting her lines excitedly and waving her arms about - which she seems to do in all her movies. The story was passable though.

Stop the great movie!
omar-mountassir13 June 2016
Stop the wedding was a great movie with a good storyline, you really saw how from the beginning Anna (Rachel Boston) and Clay (Niall Matter) didn't like each other at all, but as the movie went along, you saw how they connected.

The movie was entertaining from the beginning to end and the acting was good and the script was great.

One thing i didn't like about the movie was that Anna and Clay in the beginning of the movie had just met each other and after only knowing each other for 2 or 3 minutes decides to stop a wedding, i understand that they both didn't like the idea that Anna's aunt and Clay's father getting married so soon, but they made it look really good and believable in the movie and i liked it.

The end of the movie was successful, i won't go into that, you have to see the movie to see how it will end. I think that you will like it.

Predictably Awful

So awful it doesn't deserve any stars. I felt sorry for the actors, the plot was so predictably bad. We knew how the movie would progress and end within a few minutes of it starting. .

I loved it!
tiffanytallent198131 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This has to be one of my favorite Hallmark movies! It still follows the formula of a guy and gal meeting, working toward a common goal, falling for each other, having a misunderstanding, and then working it out. When Anna and Clay first meet, they instantly dislike each other. He makes a mistake about Anna, which is actually very enjoyable to watch, so I won't spoil it. They work together to stop the wedding of Sean (Clay's dad) and Belle (Anna's aunt). Clay fears that Belle is just another gold digger and Anna doesn't think Sean truly loves her aunt. How could a famous actor fall for a regular person?

As Anna and Clay conspire to sabotage the wedding, they start to have feelings for each other. And the chemistry is definitely there! Eventually the two realize that Sean and Belle are meant to be and start supporting the wedding. At one point, Clay overhears something that Anna says over the phone. He jumps to conclusions and leaves to fly home. Sean thinks he left because of him, so Anna rushes to the airport to get Clay back for the wedding. She thinks he is just afraid to take a chance on love because of past hurt. Clay realizes he assumed incorrectly about Anna's phone call. They make up and attend the wedding. Then something else happens a year later. Go watch it!

There was something special about this movie. The chemistry between Anna and Clay was palpable. As was the connection between Sean and Belle. The way the couples looked at each other melted my heart. All of the attempted sabotage might seem preposterous to some, but I think Anna and Clay had good intentions. They didn't want their loved ones to get hurt. I also liked that all of the misunderstandings seemed realistic. AND the problems and behavior were addressed. Like when Clay runs off to the airport after his misunderstanding, Anna calls him out on that. Why didn't he just ask her what she meant? And one of my favorite things was a song that played during a couple scenes. It's one of those love songs that gives you chills. This movie left me in tears and with an uplifted heart. It made me feel like true love is possible at any age.

Stop the Poor Plotting!
gccates15 June 2016
The entire movie felt strung together with no real direction. I read the novel this was based off of and noticed many things were changed about the setting and the plot just for the hell of it. The plot itself seemed to be abandoned halfway through the movie in favorite of clichés and wacky hi-jinks. The reasoning behind Anabelle's need to stop the wedding was flimsy at best but she soon got over it upon watching a short video of the couple together. However since there was still an hour left to fill the movie random plot points, hi-jinks and misunderstandings were thrown in as filler to stretch out the running time.Hallmark, please stop adapting novels! You do a terrible job bringing them to screen.

First I Love Hallmark Movies - but this one landed badly...
ciar20626 March 2020
The main charaters, Anna and Clay, came off (to me) as two spoiled and selfish adults. Everything was about them - so it turned me off - which is surprising because I love Hallmark Movies and typically enjoy those with Rachel Boston. I'll skip this one in the future.

One of the Very Best Movies I Have Ever Seen - #1 in My Top 10
bgwsound2 September 2016
This is my 5th Rachel Boston movie and now moves to the number one slot moving "Ice Sculpture Christmas" to number 2. I have now watched this movie at least 10 times. The characters are very believable and the story line is most fascinating and holds your interest to the very end. The humor is absolutely superb, and has caused me to laugh many times. All of the actors are well suited for their respective roles and played very well. It is an absolute joy to watch a movie without all the violence, foul language and sex, so typical of 99% of today's movies (Theatre or TV). Continues the excellent line of Hallmark Movies. I watch this channel as my top 5 TV cable channels. Another GREAT movie from Hallmark. A VERY, VERY BIG THANK YOU.

good intentioned
Kirpianuscus25 June 2022
The big problem is the high unrealism of story. Sure, good intentions, a lot of cliches, Alan Thicke reminding, more, an character from Young and Restless,David James Lewis and the short appearences of Nelson Wong as charming employee as good points.

Two not very mature young people looking for stop the weddings of relatives. Las Vegas once, Las Vegas twice. And the recipe seems to work. In wrong direction because the bridge between the first and second part seems non existent.

So, only good intentions. Not bad ones but far to give some credibility.

The myth
Jackbv1238 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a cute movie except for one very big thing. The implied message perpetuates the myth that you can "fall in love" instantly. The daughter who intends what she says and that is to encourage the apparently infatuated couple to take time to make sure. There is absolutely no way that encouraging them to take more time is not the right thing to do. But by half way through the movie, the daughter is made to feel guilty and ashamed for doing just that. Anna even starts to spout the myth herself. Even if you can fall in love at first sight, and have it really be love, which I don't believe, Anna's original motive is correct. Even if the instant love happens to be real, there is no harm in giving it some time.

I know it's extreme to diss a whole movie for something like this, but to me this is an important principle. The myth is damaging when not tempered with some common sense caution. It's true that many Rom/Com movies push the idea of falling in love way to quickly, but I don't remember another of them that so heavily shames a person who disagrees with the myth.

Otherwise, I enjoyed Rachel Boston and Niall Matter as they get to know each other on a common mission. Boston is especially charming when she smiles and her joy filled optimistic persona comes out.

Good Show
athompsonblue30 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Between this and "A Ring by Spring," I really like Rachel Boston. I like the guy playing her love interest, too. The movie is typical Hallmark, but that's a good thing. It has the message of not letting cynicism delay love. My only complaints, really, are that the older couple overreacts halfway through the movie. And, at the end, the young lovers get over their tiff super fast.

One of my new favorite Hallmarks movies
ilovefreddiem11 March 2024
This was an adorable and romantic movie even with the typical hallmark plot and relationship obstacles. Niall Matter looked really handsome, young, before he lost the weight. He and Rachel Boston were well matched as the young couple who fall in love. Alan Thicke played a likable character in this movie with a surprisingly kind personality. He sadly died the year this movie was released. He was also part of a couple in love. It all starts when his son and his fiancés niece are confused about their father's and aunt's engagement. I had a few tears at the end as usual. You can always count on a happy ending which I look forward to from Hallmark. I enjoyed this movie and will watch it at least a few more times.

A refreshingly good time
MickyG33310 June 2023
7.8 stars.

One of those "I don't understand why all the bad reviews" sort of moments for me. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. A woman and a man are both very hesitant to let their parents get married. More specifically, it's her aunt who raised her since her parents died, and it's his dad. Both have been previously married, but there has been much past drama which is a major obstacle to this being a good idea. Well, this story is all about the two leads trying to stop the wedding, but in the meantime, they fall in love. It's refreshing, it's fun, the acting is totally on point, the writing is adept, the direction is well done, the dialogue is witty and comedic. What's not to like? Look at the cast, this film is littered with actors you have seen many times. There are several Hallmark regulars, the whole band showed up for this movie, and as a bonus we have Alan Thicke. Not too shabby and he's Canadian too like so many other Hallmark actors (go figure).
