The late 2000s was awash with true-crime miniseries, documentaries, and podcasts, a trend that continues today with the likes of Ryan Murphy's Monsters anthology series, which most recently covered the story of Lyle and Erik Menendez. And there's always been a steady stream of slasher movies available for those who want bloody entertainment without the real-life baggage but how many movies combine the two genres into one twistedly fun ride? Tyler MacIntyre's criminally overlooked 2017 teen slasher Tragedy Girls does exactly that, turning our morbid obsession with real-life murders into the target of biting commentary while still reveling in the inherent fun of the slasher genre. Like Cory Finley's Thoroughbreds, Tragedy Girls puts a darkly humorous spin on following the journey of budding psychopaths, played here by Alexandra Shipp and Brianna Hildebrand, while also adding in queer undertones and the exaggerated, pitch-black humor and violence of Heathers for...

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has extended its first-look deal with Oscar-nominated producer Kevin Walsh and his The Walsh Company shingle, to continue to develop and produce original films and series for the service.
This is a sweeter deal, and positions Walsh to become a bigger supplier for Apple’s slate of originals. It comes after Walsh produced Apple Original Films’ The Instigators, which launched as the most-watched movie on Apple TV+; and the Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon. Up next is another Apple original, Echo Valley, a Michael Pearce-directed thriller that stars Julianne Moore alongside Sydney Sweeney from an original screenplay by Brad Ingelsby. Produced by The Walsh Company and Scott Free Films, that film debuts next year.
Walsh is also in the middle of a potential sequel to The Instigators, sorting it out with Apple, director Doug Liman, co-writers Casey Affleck and Chuck MacLean and Artists Equity partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Anya Taylor-Joy's new Netflix series shares similarities with her film Thoroughbreds. Both stories focus on murder and the upper class, featuring strong female characters. Taylor-Joy's strong character work from her thriller films is likely to enhance the new Netflix project.
Anya Taylor-Joy's upcoming Netflix series sounds quite a bit like one of her 2017 thriller films that received an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score. Anya Taylor-Joy has recently focused solely on big screen projects, starring in larger budget films such as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, as well as featuring in supporting roles in epics such as Dune 2. However, Anya Taylor-Joy's return to Netflix marks her pivot back to the small screen and, specifically, back to the streaming service that houses one of her breakout roles.
Anya Taylor-Joy starred in Netflix's The Queen's Gambit back in 2020, earning her acclaim for her strong performance and ability to balance the intense emotions of the story.

The Wastelands loss is Netflixs gain. Yes, Furiosa herself, the Golden Globe-winning Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast in the lead role for the upcoming Netflix series based on the bestselling book, How to Kill Your Family. Bella Mackies 2021 novel is being adapted into an eight-part show for the streaming service, and the author thinks that Taylor-Joy is the most perfect fit to play Grace. I often think she understands her better than I do. And for Taylor-Joy, the actress knew she had to be a part of the adaptation, which brings protagonist Grace Bernard to the small screen. Taylor-Joy said in an interview (per Tudum):
As soon as I turned the last page, I knew I had to be a part of bringing this story to life. After some (light) stalking of the inimitable Bella Mackie, I could not be more thrilled to be collaborating with the team that...

House of the Dragon may have elevated Olivia Cooke to the zenith of fame, but her Hollywood resume is much more diverse than the HBO fantasy epic. From historical drama and horror outings to a sci-fi film and a musical, the English actress has dabbled in a menagerie of genres throughout her career.

Soon, Hugh Jackman will return as Logan in the highly-anticipated "Deadpool & Wolverine," hopefully returning the Marvel Cinematic Universe to glory in the process. If there's one role the Aussie actor is known for, after all, it's Wolverine/Logan, and as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" taught us all, cramming your movie full of fan-favorite cameos is a recipe for box office success — though, in the latter's case, not necessarily for a good film.
Jackman has spoken about how he saved "Deadpool 3" with a phone call to star Ryan Reynolds, on which he expressed his desire to appear in the movie, prompting the literal "ka-ching" sound in the minds of Reynolds and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. However, even Feige advised Jackman against returning as Wolverine, mainly due to his historic run in the various X-Men films and James Mangold's almost...

Anya Taylor Joy fans rejoice this week as she returns to the big screen as young Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, after a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in Dune: Part 2 earlier this year. Ever since The Queen's Gambit skyrocketed her into global fame in 2020, the actress has been everywhere, but long before she was fake shaving her head on camera in the Mad Max prequel, she teamed up with House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke in the dark comedy thriller Thoroughbreds. Written and directed by Cory Finley, this 2017 film follows upper-crust Connecticut teens Lily (Taylor-Joy) and Amanda (Cooke) as they rekindle their friendship and plot to kill Lily's stepfather Mark (Paul Sparks). Upon its release, Thoroughbreds earned comparisons to the 1988 black comedy Heathers. Thoroughbreds works best as a character study of two teenage girls who are seemingly opposites but have more in common than they realize. Before they...

A brief overview of Anya Taylor-Joy's career reveals she has always preferred fearless roles. Director George Miller says she's proven she has the grit to play Furiosa on multiple occasions.
Early reviews of Furiosa confirm it's a worthy prequel to Fury Road. Anya Taylor-Joy owned her role so well that some thought her narrating voice in one of the trailers was Charlize Theron's. Taylor-Joy poked fun at the comparison in an interview with Variety. "You're shocked that I'm good?" she quipped. "Acting darling. I was channeling Furiosa's voice. Gal doesn't talk much. When she opens her mouth, it's rusty in there." Director George Miller also revealed she was so invested in the role that she insisted on doing much of the stunt work on her own. According to GQ, Miller was so impressed with Taylor-Joy's physicality in Furiosa that she's become indistinguishable from her stunt double.

In 2015, producer Kevin J. Walsh was clearing out a last-minute parking lot location for Manchester by the Sea’s most memorable scene, and just seven years later, he found himself on one of several battlefields that would define Ridley Scott’s latest historical epic, Napoleon.
Financed by Apple Original Films and distributed by Sony, the Joaquin Phoenix-led film just outperformed expectations with $32.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving window, and Walsh believes that Napoleon’s production and distribution arrangement is the ideal way forward for streamers who want to make big-budget plays. With the possible exception of Netflix, the remaining streamers haven’t been able to justify the expense of streaming-exclusive blockbusters, but Napoleon has now established that streaming services and traditional studios can work together in mutually beneficial ways.

Anya Taylor-Joy has been in increasingly high demand over the past few years. The 26-year-old's star began to rise with roles in projects like "The Witch," "Split," "Glass," "Peaky Blinders," and "The Queen's Gambit." She's also starred in movies like "Thoroughbreds," "Emma," "The New Mutants," "The Northman," "The Menu," and "The Super Mario Bros. Over the years, Taylor-Joy has mostly kept her dating life low-key, though details have emerged here and there. In 2018, before "The Queen's Gambit" made her a household name, Taylor-Joy told The Guardian that she purposely chooses not to share too much about her personal life. "There's a beauty in being anonymous," she said. "There's a reason why we're actors, we're playing other people so I think the idea of someone being interested in me, I'm quite a private person,...

The “invisible hand of the marketplace” is a favorite term of laissez-faire globalized economics, but Landscape With Invisible Hand is a dark comedy science fiction tale about a teen-aged artist living on a near-future Earth transformed by twenty years of occupation by creatures from another planet. We expect invaders from space to be scary monster with big weapons but what if the space aliens who came to conquer the Earth weren’t monsters with ray guns but annoying, harmless-looking bureaucrats who used economic soft power and brought advanced technology which made most human jobs obsolete?

How bold must we be in our quest to stay true to ourselves, and what would we do to keep our families intact? These are but two of the thought-provoking themes that writer/director Cory Finley explores to winning ends in Landscape with Invisible Hand, which lands in theaters Friday, Aug. 18. They are two ideologies that sometimes work in direct conflict with each other. But what if they didn’t have to? Landscape with Invisible Hand is an offbeat comedy with heavy doses of spunk and sweetness. It’s a daring picture for Finley, who takes the premise of aliens ruling Earth in the not-too-distant future as a backdrop to explore one family’s journey to keep it all together.
But there’s a much deeper message here. The filmmakers use the alien invasion plot — something that typically winds up being the sole focus of a film of that ilk...

Filmmakers are given fewer opportunities to make creative passion projects outside of the standard audience expectations, resulting in directors like Chloé Zhao and Ryan Coogler turning to franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Only a select group of directors today can generate audience passion based on their name alone, with Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, and Edgar Wright emerging as some of the few. Cory Finley, the filmmaker behind Thoroughbreds and Bad Education, deserves to be considered among the great directors of his generation due to his ability to discover new talented performers and create films that provide dark commentary on emotional reckoning, wealth disparity, and public education.
The number of filmmakers working today that have the potential to last as long as the industry as Oliver Stone or Ridley Scott is dwindling, as directors are given less opportunities to make creative passion projects that fall outside the standard expectations of audiences.

Landscape With Invisible Hand, based on M.T. Anderson's novel, explores a post-alien invasion world where two families live together and monetize their teenage romance by livestreaming it for the Vuvv. Director Cory Finley aimed to preserve the tone of the book in the film adaptation, making changes to fit the visual medium while keeping the story's satirical and comedic edge intact. The film focuses on a young man coming of age in an economically unstable world, while also exploring themes of capitalism, colonialism, and the complexity of relationships.
Coming to theaters on August 18th, Landscape With Invisible Hand tells the story of two clashing families who agree to share space in a post-alien invasion world. What starts as a genuine romance between the teens in the house turns into a monetary ploy when Chloe comes up with the idea to live stream their relationship for the Vuvv. However, it...

"At some point it starts being domination." Indeed - and I wonder if that's where we are now with society? MGM has unveiled a final official trailer for the audacious sci-fi film Landscape with Invisible Hand, directed by Cory Finley (of Thoroughbreds and Bad Education previously). The film opens in US theaters nationwide this Friday, on August 18th. This is adapted from the book of the same name by M.T. Anderson (which comes highly recommended), and it first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (our review). "Welcome to the future, where the entertainment is us." When an occupying alien species' (who are called Vuvv) bureaucratic rule and advanced technology leaves most of Earth impoverished and unemployed, two teenagers hatch a risky plan to ensure their families' futures. It's a clever commentary on capitalism and art and how we sacrifice our integrity just to make money. Even though...

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Love is a purely human emotion that can’t be faked — such is the theme at the center of the first trailer for Cory Finley’s “Landscape With Invisible Hands,” released Tuesday.
The film is based on the book by M.T. Anderson and, per the official synopsis, it takes place years into a benevolent occupation of Earth by an alien species. “When 17-year-old artist Adam Campbell (Asante Blackk) and new girlfriend Chloe Marsh (Kylie Rogers) discover the Vuvv are particularly fascinated with human love and will pay for access to it, they decide to livestream their budding romance to make extra cash for themselves and their families. Life is good, for a while, until the flame of their teenage love fizzles out and they’re forced to make very different, absurdly life-altering sacrifices for their families.”
The trailer looks like a quirky romantic comedy, albeit with an alien invasion in the middle of it.

The Sundance Film Festival has wrapped up, and overall their first year back in person since the pandemic was a rousing success. Several of the movie’s big films have been snapped up for distribution in record-breaking deals and will be seen soon. However, the two biggest deals (so far) have been for streaming services, so while you may not be seeing a lot of these on the big screen, but they should create a lot of buzz when the drop.
Here’s a list of highlights from the festival and when you can expect to see them:
Flora and Son
John Carney’s follow-up to his trilogy of music-driven romances, Once, Begin Again and Sing Street, was one of the most beloved films to play Park City this year. Eve Hewson, Jack Reynor and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in this story of a divorced mother in Ireland who signs up...

Charisma, star talent, and a notably humble personality: At just 26 years old, Anya Taylor-Joy seems to have it all. “The Queen’s Gambit” starlet has become the face of Viktor & Rolf, garnered an Emmy nomination, and won a Golden Globe award — all in just six short years after her first feature role. The Miami-born, Argentine-raised, and London-based international film star landed on the scene in 2015 with Robert Eggers’ directorial debut “The Witch.” The breakout role from the Sundance hit cemented Taylor-Joy’s striking screen presence, with IndieWire’s review calling her “standout” performance “exquisitely ominous and unequivocally haunting.”
Taylor-Joy quickly became an indie darling with subsequent films “Morgan” opposite Kate Mara, “Thoroughbreds” by writer-director Cory Finley, and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” and “Glass.” In an interview with IndieWire, she lamented that she refuses to be typecast, but rather follows the “magic feeling” of reading the right part.

In screenwriter and director Cory Finley’s third feature, Landscape with Invisible Hand, the near-future Earth has been overtaken by an alien species. Rather, the governments have handed over control to the Vuvv – said alien species – in a transaction of sorts, as the Vuvv have essentially bought Earth and many humans now face poverty. Releasing sometime this year, this is the screenwriter-turned-director’s third feature film, and the second to premiere at Sundance after 2017’s Thoroughbreds starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke.

What would life on Earth look like in a future where humans are still very much alive but no longer in charge? Landscape With Invisible Hand — directed by Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds, Bad Education) and based on the 2017 young adult novel by M.T. Anderson — depicts a depressed, dryly humorous society crumbling away at a steady pace. Little aliens called “the Vuvv” have landed and torpedoed the economy, leaving most humans either underemployed or out of work entirely. The wealthy have already abandoned the planet to live “up there” with the aliens, while everyone still on Earth is left to forage for what’s left of the money, land and food. Instead of fearsome creatures with horrifying lasers and military might, the Vuvv are tiny bureaucrats with no empathy for the poverty their soulless business practices have created.
