Exclusive: Apple TV+ has extended its first-look deal with Oscar-nominated producer Kevin Walsh and his The Walsh Company shingle, to continue to develop and produce original films and series for the service.

This is a sweeter deal, and positions Walsh to become a bigger supplier for Apple’s slate of originals. It comes after Walsh produced Apple Original Films’ The Instigators, which launched as the most-watched movie on Apple TV+; and the Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon. Up next is another Apple original, Echo Valley, a Michael Pearce-directed thriller that stars Julianne Moore alongside Sydney Sweeney from an original screenplay by Brad Ingelsby. Produced by The Walsh Company and Scott Free Films, that film debuts next year.

Walsh is also in the middle of a potential sequel to The Instigators, sorting it out with Apple, director Doug Liman, co-writers Casey Affleck and Chuck MacLean and Artists Equity partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Early reviews of Furiosa confirm it's a worthy prequel to Fury Road. Anya Taylor-Joy owned her role so well that some thought her narrating voice in one of the trailers was Charlize Theron's. Taylor-Joy poked fun at the comparison in an interview with Variety. "You're shocked that I'm good?" she quipped. "Acting darling. I was channeling Furiosa's voice. Gal doesn't talk much. In 2015, producer Kevin J. Walsh was clearing out a last-minute parking lot location for Manchester by the Sea’s most memorable scene, and just seven years later, he found himself on one of several battlefields that would define Ridley Scott’s latest historical epic, Napoleon.

The “invisible hand of the marketplace” is a favorite term of laissez-faire globalized economics, but Landscape With Invisible Hand is a dark comedy science fiction tale about a teen-aged artist living on a near-future Earth transformed by twenty years of occupation by creatures from another planet. We expect invaders from space to be scary monster with big weapons but what if the space aliens who came to conquer the Earth weren’t monsters with ray guns but annoying, harmless-looking bureaucrats who used economic soft power and brought advanced technology which made most human jobs obsolete?

How bold must we be in our quest to stay true to ourselves, and what would we do to keep our families intact? These are but two of the thought-provoking themes that writer/director Cory Finley explores to winning ends in Landscape with Invisible Hand, which lands in theaters Friday, Aug. 18. They are two ideologies that sometimes work in direct conflict with each other. But what if they didn’t have to? Landscape with Invisible Hand is an offbeat comedy with heavy doses of spunk and sweetness. It’s a daring picture for Finley, who takes the premise of aliens ruling Earth in the not-too-distant future as a backdrop to explore one family’s journey to keep it all together.

But there’s a much deeper message here. The filmmakers use the alien invasion plot — something that typically winds up being the sole focus of a film of that ilk...

Filmmakers are given fewer opportunities to make creative passion projects outside of the standard audience expectations, resulting in directors like Chloé Zhao and Ryan Coogler turning to franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Only a select group of directors today can generate audience passion based on their name alone, with Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, and Edgar Wright emerging as some of the few. Cory Finley, the filmmaker behind Thoroughbreds and Bad Education, deserves to be considered among the great directors of his generation due to his ability to discover new talented performers and create films that provide dark commentary on emotional reckoning, wealth disparity, and public education.

The number of filmmakers working today that have the potential to last as long as the industry as Oliver Stone or Ridley Scott is dwindling, as directors are given less opportunities to make creative passion projects that fall outside the standard expectations of audiences.

Landscape With Invisible Hand, based on M.T. Anderson's novel, explores a post-alien invasion world where two families live together and monetize their teenage romance by livestreaming it for the Vuvv. Director Cory Finley aimed to preserve the tone of the book in the film adaptation, making changes to fit the visual medium while keeping the story's satirical and comedic edge intact. The film focuses on a young man coming of age in an economically unstable world, while also exploring themes of capitalism, colonialism, and the complexity of relationships.

Tiffany Haddish (The Aftermath) agrees to marriage with an alien in the final trailer for Landscape with Invisible Hand. Based on M.T. Anderson’s satirical sci-fi novel, the strange story is set in a time in which aliens have taken over Earth without wiping out the human population.

In addition to Tiffany Haddish, the R-rated film stars Asante Blackk (This Is Us) and Kylie Rogers (Home Before Dark). Cory Finley, Spirit Awards Best First Screenplay nominee for Thoroughbreds, adapted Anderson’s novel and directed the sci-fi dramedy.

Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner produced, with Brad Pitt, Gabby Shepard, David Kern, M.T. Anderson, Megan Ellison, and Tiffany Haddish executive producing.

The film is based on the book by M.T. Anderson and, per the official synopsis, it takes place years into a benevolent occupation of Earth by an alien species. “When 17-year-old artist Adam Campbell (Asante Blackk) and new girlfriend Chloe Marsh (Kylie Rogers) discover the Vuvv are particularly fascinated with human love and will pay for access to it, they decide to livestream their budding romance to make extra cash for themselves and their families. Life is good, for a while, until the flame of their teenage love fizzles out and they’re forced to make very different, absurdly life-altering sacrifices for their families.”

The Sundance Film Festival has wrapped up, and overall their first year back in person since the pandemic was a rousing success. Several of the movie’s big films have been snapped up for distribution in record-breaking deals and will be seen soon. However, the two biggest deals (so far) have been for streaming services, so while you may not be seeing a lot of these on the big screen, but they should create a lot of buzz when the drop.

Here’s a list of highlights from the festival and when you can expect to see them:

Charisma, star talent, and a notably humble personality: At just 26 years old, Anya Taylor-Joy seems to have it all. “The Queen’s Gambit” starlet has become the face of Viktor & Rolf, garnered an Emmy nomination, and won a Golden Globe award — all in just six short years after her first feature role. The Miami-born, Argentine-raised, and London-based international film star landed on the scene in 2015 with Robert Eggers’ directorial debut “The Witch.” The breakout role from the Sundance hit cemented Taylor-Joy’s striking screen presence, with IndieWire’s review calling her “standout” performance “exquisitely ominous and unequivocally haunting.”

Taylor-Joy quickly became an indie darling with subsequent films “Morgan” opposite Kate Mara, “Thoroughbreds” by writer-director Cory Finley, and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” and “Glass.” In an interview with IndieWire, she lamented that she refuses to be typecast, but rather follows the “magic feeling” of reading the right part.

In screenwriter and director Cory Finley’s third feature, Landscape with Invisible Hand, the near-future Earth has been overtaken by an alien species. Rather, the governments have handed over control to the Vuvv – said alien species – in a transaction of sorts, as the Vuvv have essentially bought Earth and many humans now face poverty. Releasing sometime this year, this is the screenwriter-turned-director’s third feature film, and the second to premiere at Sundance after 2017’s Thoroughbreds starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke.

What would life on Earth look like in a future where humans are still very much alive but no longer in charge? Landscape With Invisible Hand — directed by Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds, Bad Education) and based on the 2017 young adult novel by M.T. Anderson — depicts a depressed, dryly humorous society crumbling away at a steady pace. Little aliens called “the Vuvv” have landed and torpedoed the economy, leaving most humans either underemployed or out of work entirely. The wealthy have already abandoned the planet to live “up there” with the aliens, while everyone still on Earth is left to forage for what’s left of the money, land and food. Instead of fearsome creatures with horrifying lasers and military might, the Vuvv are tiny bureaucrats with no empathy for the poverty their soulless business practices have created.
