VIEWS ON FILM review of Social Animals
burlesonjesse55 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Social Animals is a depressing, sort of pseudo comedy that features a borderline, unlikable lead in Zoe (played by San Antonio, Texas native, Noel Wells). As far as new releases go in 2018, "Animals" is like Reality Bites, Richard Linklater's Slacker, and 1998's Your Friends & Neighbors being melded in a cinematic blender.

Note to the rebelling filmmakers of Social Animals: Jeanne Garofalo called and wants her undisguised promiscuity back. Also, Jason Patric phoned and wants his sobering masculinity brought back into fruition too. Finally, don't include a fellatio scene with a cucumber just for kicks. It utterly feels like witless filler.

Anyway, the flick dons effective use of Austin, Texas locales and a whiff of the city's legendary music scene. However, "Animals" makes you want to avoid certain parts of that freewheeling borough in the long run. In veracity, words like uneven, honest, tiredly manipulative, and doleful are what I'd use to describe Social Animals.

Director Theresa Bennett (this is her feature film debut) crams several, daft relationship stories into ninety minutes but her main focus is on sad sack Zoe (mentioned earlier). Zoe is a woman who is late on her rent, lives in an RV, and owns an unsuccessful waxing outlet. She's single, almost broke, and smokes pot whenever an average occasion arises. Zoe out of boredom or sheer desperation, befriends a friendly, loser married guy and has an affair with him.

"Animals" despite its decent performances and its effectively rundown, suburban inhabiting, never fully finds a coherent tone. With its Gen X careening, its woe is me dialogue, and its need to include animated illustrations of sexual innuendo, Social Animals might have been germane say, fifteen years ago. Oh and one more thing, what does the title of this movie mean anyway? My rating: 2 stars.

Noel Wells, manic pixie dream girl
Le_Nausea2 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
She plays the same character quirky messy girl rom com girl in everything i've seen her in. Yawn. Is she like this in real life? Its abit like being hit over the head repeatedly with a strawberry shortcake. I thought this trope had died with Zooey Deschanel and Natalie Portman in Garden State (the latter is actually pretty great, hence all the copycats). We luv her for her 'uniqueness' but the thing is... being a skinny white indie girl isn't very new is it? At least in this story we don't have to put up with any bourgeois crap. She lives in a trailer, but still somehow manages to make it cute and upbeat! My final note (spoiler) is that... I think the main male character in this film was abit of a philandering A-hole (in a 'nice guy' poly disguise) and a pretty crap parent and why wasn't he reprimanded instead of getting the girl? No doubt some would argue with this judgement, but every rom com has a falling out and a getting back together. To me, it felt shallow and rushed. In any case, a different leading lady could've changed the entire tone of the film. Maybe the new generation of viewers haven't met the manic pixie dream before? It's grating af to see it's return.

Commitment is for adults.
ramfat1 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER: This movie would have made a lot more sense if they would have just removed the kids from the main couple. I was actually surprised when they showed the kids, and it turned out they belonged to the main couple. I thought they were just babysitting or something, at first, because this couple behaved like they were wishy-washy insecure middle schoolers. These kids are now messed up for life because their parents are selfish weaklings, but somehow this movie tries to play itself off as a lighthearted comedy? Oh wait, I forgot, it's the governments job to raise children, and to educate them....they'll be fine.

Uncompromising relationship romcom
shakercoola15 November 2018
An American comedy. A story about a down-on-her-luck woman who meets fellow lovable loser and they form an instant connection, but there's just one problem - he is married. The main theme is the complexity of modern relationships and the attempts to muddle through. The story is mainly outlandish situations. What makes it work are the performances which are attractive. The film tends to plod on from one situation to another with some good laughs but without a definite throughline.

Simple and fun

It's worth watching for Fortune Feimster.

The setting is an older section of town in Austin. Our two main characters each own a boutique style small business. Maybe to hopefully revitalize the area. But the greater public interest isn't there to support them.

Delightful characters carry us through their daily lives. An easy watch for light entertainment.

Awful

Don't think there was one worthwhile moment until this film. Not funny, not dramatic I question just why it was made.

Kill Your Dreams
scythertitus30 December 2019
The level of pessimism in this movie is likely to turn many people off. It basically boils down to a film for people who's lives didn't turn out that great and how that is just life. This viewpoint is helpful for those who are in the situation, but for anyone who does have a good job or relationship it just seems a bit snarky.

It comes down to whether your philosophy is one of live and let live or if you think there is actually a good way to live your life and a bad one. There are some funny scenes and the acting is all pretty decent.

Overall whether or not you like this movie will come down to the tone, if you like the pessimistic but accepting of the negative outlook that this movie has it isn't half bad, although the ending might put off those people who are fans of real life situations where nothing is resolved.

Uncomfortable and awkward
etetaierdna30 March 2020
The main character , Zoe, is, literally, a generic version of Zoe Deschanel. Like the director couldn't get Zoey Deschanel so decided to go with the dupe version.

The overall actinng of cast was cringe worthy and it's a bloody shame to see Josh Radnor, even if with a believable-ish performance, in such a bad movie.

I feel like the positive reviews could only be written by Theresa Bennett herself because that's the only explanation for having any,

something
SnoopyStyle1 August 2020
In Austin, Texas, Zoe Crandle (Noël Wells) is a sexually liberated single gal. She's never been in love and not looking to be. Claire (Carly Chaikin) is her BFF. Paul (Josh Radnor) and Jane (Aya Cash) have a family and she wears the pants. She suggests having an affair to save their marriage.

Theresa Bennett seems to be a jack of all trades and this is her first directing work. Noël Wells seems to be a comedic actress who has been rolling around for awhile. I don't know either of them. The directing is functional but it's not the most exciting. Her writing lacks the comedic punch. She tries to be quirky in her sexual forwardness but it doesn't get enough laughs. Her leading lady Wells needs more charisma and her character is not always appealing. She is often outshined by the other actors. I do recognize a lot of the other actors from various TV shows and they do fine work. Chaikin may be a bit young but her personality fits the lead much better. The other major female character is played by Cash who blows up the screen time and time again. She's the most interesting side of the love triangle. The chemistry is off since Wells is rather flat in an interesting role. Something is not working here.

dimwinne22 November 2021
It's a bit dark, it's def. 15+ But it's also: life. Failing, friends, dating, falling in love, the social pressure.

Not for everyone but very enjoyable.

Also: nice score!

You will not regret these 80min.

'Reality Bites' with a Hipster Feminist edge
musiqe2 June 2018
'Social Animals' is not just another dram-com, it rises above all other similar films because of its amazing cast, witty dialogue and amazingly colorful cinematography. Its so refreshing to have a female lead who isn't a one note paper doll, this character has depth and charm and isn't afraid to be unlikable. Not only does this movie succeed in it's dramatic beats, its also succeeds in being hilariously funny! There is an oral sex work shop taught by Fortune Feimster! I literally rolled on the floor laughing! Don't miss this hilarious yet poignant film!!!

Fast Times at Hipster High
justin-mccormick-22 June 2018
If Cameron Crowe and Amy Heckerlings 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' is a love letter to teens in the 80's, then 'Social Animals' is a love letter for 30 year old hipsters in 2018. It smashes the 'manic pixie dreamgirl' persona wide open by creating a female main character that is fully realized and is not just a prop for a "straight man" to realizes he needs to let loose. It has an amazing ensemble cast (it's literally a who's who of all best TV people from all your fave shows), great snappy dialogue, awesome music, and the city of Austin has never looked more beautiful on screen. If you're anything like me, you're gonna wanna watch this movie multiple times, so don't rent it....BUY IT!

Finally a female rom com that brings the heat!
natassiaespina2 June 2018
This movie gave me all the feels! Theresa Bennett humorously delivers the plight of being a young woman navigating love, career and relationships in Trump's America. While she tackles serious yet relatable issues she still manages to bring the laughs and keep you wanting more. Her characters are multi dimensional and certainly reminded me of myself and best friends growing up. This writer/director brings the goods! A must see!

An above average Romcom
chattopadhyaysabyasachi631 August 2019
A good Romcom, both Aya Cash and Noel Wells acted well but Aya was really good ! I Would say if you are looking for a movie which is slightly slow and a Romcom you should watch it . I watched enough action movies so wanted to try something else and I suddenly found this . Good one!

A Millennial Zeitgeist
juniperjacobs4 June 2018
Theresa Bennett speaks on behalf of all us misanthropic millennial's who are just trying to figure out what the fuck we're doing with our lives and what happy looks like. She unapologetically peppers in her own experiences to lend the vulnerability we've come to expect from her writing. As much as I love her dialogue and story-telling, it's her directorial debut that really shines here, creating an intimacy between audience and characters that feels as close as two long-time friends swapping weekend-recaps over Sunday brunch.
