Didn't hold up

Warning: Spoilers
Started out promising but fell flat midway through. I'm still a bit confused how the kid died but don't care enough to watch it again.

Kept at bay
Stanlee10717 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a drama driven film that delves deep in a seemingly happily married woman's life that endure some hardship...

It is not the type of film I normally watch so struggled to relate or sympathise with the 2 antagonists. The female lead descends into a mental break down and the last 15 minutes included a plot twist to make her more sympathetic.

I found this film to be very long and I just wanted it to end. The storyline grinded me in a bad way and thus made me disconnected from the 2 leads. It is like an extended soap opera set in the country side and fails to win me over...

A terrible mess, can't even call it a movie...
syldt114 August 2020
Horrible acting (not a surprise in Kurilenko's case, but WTF, Brian Cox?), disjointed narrative, ridiculous scenes...avoid it at all cost!

Annoying mess.
teachermarkthailand17 August 2020
It's annoying when film makers think we won't notice fake plastic babies and cushions imitating pregnancies... but they still pull these stunts thinking we're too dumb to notice! This effort is no different.

The story is a convoluted mess, the twins can't act and the characters are just ridiculous and do ridiculous things.

Apart from a couple of nice shots of the bay, there's nothing else to watch.

Is this a prank?
mfkvvzwuc16 August 2020
Nothing on this movie make any sense and NOT in the "mystery" way, all the script goes against basic rules of common sense making the whole thing look pathetic.

Not mentioning the impossibly bad acting.

What a mess.

If I could have given this zero stars, I would
thomasquinlan-6121022 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have never reviewed a movie before, but this movie infuriated me so much, I decided I needed to. This is single-handedly the most awkward, contrived film I have seen in 22 years on this planet. From the forced, uncomfortable dialogue, to the non-sensical storyline, not a single thing, with the exception of the acting, is redeemable about this movie. The plot makes zero sense while trying to be 5 different things at the same time. It introduces storylines that have no bearing on the story and ultimately have no resolution and no explanation. From introducing a "secret-dead twin" subplot for the first 20-30 minutes of the movie, that is then effectively dropped with no more explanation on it, to having a pointless "the nanny must have done it" subplot for another 20 minutes and some change, this film does absolutely nothing correctly. Any subject matter it tries to handle, it utterly fumbles and fails to do any sort of justice to any of the characters. From the opening line of the movie, which YES was "Shhhh we're in the bay of silence" to the closing line of the movie, which yes was also "shhh we're in the bay of silence" not a single good decision by the director, screenwriter or editor was made. ultimately one of the biggest travesties in film making I have ever witnessed. An utter waste of talent. 0/10 would not recommend, would recommend driving your car off a cliff before I ever recommend this movie to anyone.

Quite confusing
Gordon-1123 August 2020
I find the plot engaging at first, but towards the middle I got really confused. The plot twists too much, and some characters are not introduced properly.

What is this?

This movie is terrible. I've watched Taco Bell commercials that had more of a plot and drama then this movie has.

Misleading Trailer

A very good story, a promising start then turns to a huge disappointment with bad direction, poor cinematography and cheesy acting.

Who? Where?
kosmasp3 October 2021
The movie is a bit convoluted - but it isn't really that bad. I can see if some feel differently. You have to suspend your disbelief for sure. Having said that, I've seen so much worse than this, that I can safely say, this is a decent overall thriller you can watch.

Of course if you only watch one movie a month or less ... you may want to divert and go watch something more solid than this. Anyone who is like me, will find at least something enticing and worthwhile here. Even if it is the partly confusing story and trying to keep up with what is going on ...

"Everyone lies, all the time."
classicsoncall14 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After reading all thirty five reviews posted for this film here on IMDb as I write this, I'm convinced that most movie viewers don't have the attention span necessary to watch a film from beginning to end in order to follow the story line. Far from being a convoluted mess and lacking any coherence, it's actually simple enough to understand what happens here, so in the interest of clearing things up, I'll explain. Rosalind's (Olga Kurylenko) mental breakdown occurred because she stopped taking her medication for schizophrenia, which she thought would harm her pregnancy. Her first experience with the illness occurred at the age of fourteen when she was raped by photographer J.B. Raven, who was already dead when the events in this picture take place. Milton (Bryan Cox) was the business agent for Raven, as well as the agent for Rosalind, an accomplished artist. Raven photographed Rosalind multiple times after raping her in a state of shock and trauma, and blamed the rape on his assistant Pierre Laurent (Assaad Bouab), who went to prison for twenty years after being convicted of the crime.

Milton helped cover up the rape by Raven, just as he covered up the death of baby Amodeo by using his contacts in high places, to make it look like the baby died in a car crash. He did so under the pretense of "We have to protect the ones we love", which he stated to Will (Claes Bang) at one point. What he really meant was that he had to protect his own sources of income and prevent the truth from coming out about his covering up Raven's rape of Ros. Milton felt he could blackmail Will about burying the dead baby, thereby insuring that his involvement in both instances would remain secure.

When Ros went back on her medication and started to get better, she slowly became aware of Milton's complicity in undermining her life. Pierre Laurent was the one who sent the photos taken by Raven to Rosalind at her home, but she never opened the chest to see them. When he found the chest, Will forced it open to see the pictures of his wife when she was traumatized by her rape at a young age. Later, Milton secured the chest and brought it to his home. It wasn't until Will confronted Pierre in the alley that he became aware of Milton's involvement in the original cover up. While attempting to keep Ros sedated at his home, she came across the photos taken by Raven, and began to understand Milton's role in keeping Raven's secret buried, while helping pin the blame on Laurent. She was restrained from killing Milton by Will, though as they left his apartment, the off screen gunshot by Laurent killed Milton, who placed the body on the building's front steps with the scattered photos affirming Raven's crime scattered around him.

There are other nuances in the picture I haven't detailed in the interest of space and time, but they all contribute to the continuity of the story line. An opening sequence in the film of the young Rosalind and her childhood friend Pierre running off to hide the chest in a small cave makes sense when you have the events in the story finally come full circle.

Mysterious, intruiging and mesmerising
omendata15 August 2020
This was as mysterious a thriller as I have seen this year. Keeps you involved and wanting more with its unique combination of music, photography and script it is hard to describe as there are not many films that can conjure up the atmosphere that this director has with a seemingly straightforward script yet make it into the most mysterious of mysteries that will keep you guessing and actually wondering what the heck am I actually watching; from the scene in the french house on the edge of the cliff to the buried baby it was most original and stylish of the year so far and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to the very finish - A solid 7/10!

An absolute mess of a film
contactmaz20 May 2021
Gave it a 2 because of Olga.

This film was a complete load of tripe with an absolute tosh of a performance, as usual, from Claes Bang whose an absolute cr*p actor who never shows any emotion and uses the same boring, simple, dumb tone in every role he plays... Brian Cox, whose role was nonsense, Olga who sort of did well but surprised she'd sign up for such a weak and pathetic film and so, I was 'angry' at watching a load of ****

So, basically I have a note to self.... AVOID CLAES BANG FILMS BECAUSE HE'S CR*P (AND NOT ALL OF OLGA'S FILMS ARE WORTH WATCHING!).

An Unholy Mess
What utter garbage. I can't decide what's worse - the plot (if there was one) or the acting. I want these 100 minutes of my life back.

A bit mystery, but overall super bored, and full of annoying overuse scene! Not recommended!
kwenchow7 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film start with a girl running away, and the introduction of a couple(Will and Rosalind) scene! As turnout, this film is about Rosalind having depression after rape by Milton, and eventually Milton's crime been expose by Pierre! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the capture photo scene, overuse of the eating medicine scene, overuse of the blackout scene, overuse of the dreaming scene, overuse of the walking scene, overuse of the searching things scene, and overuse of the driving scene! Make the film unwatchable! Barely intense scene is, Rosalind shot at Milton at the end of the film! At the end, Milton die alongside the photo of Rosalind! That's it! Wasting time to watch!

Intense and gripping, this psychological thriller fills in the right tones in its Gothic stylish narrative. A mind bending puzzle involving murderous twists and a mysterious cult.

A Joke and a prank on audiences.
max_krop14 January 2021
Firstly, when you make a movie trailer that is totally different from the movie then your intentions are not honest. The movie has sub-plots with no connection or bearing at all to the main plot or climax of the movie, as if they were put in there to fill up time. Whole scenes that are totally irrelevant to the main plot or climax.

It seems as if mid way the producers changed their minds about the movies plot and climax but due to filming constraints kept some of the scenes to make up the running time. This is what I believe actually happened, it is not uncommon it happens in the movie industry a lot due to various reasons. The audience getting cheated of in the process is of course another matter.

Ignore the ratings
b-bush-63-67681619 August 2020
Yes it seemed a bit disjointed but it's explained, if you don't manage to work it out. Sensitive subject but it eventually becomes obvious. Strangely filmed in Gateshead, not the most exotic location with a bit of Europe thrown in 😁

A well played strong story
mjsreg17 August 2020
I don't know why this movie has such a low rating.

The story is engaging and the acting is superb from all the cast, including the kids.

Probably not a movie for you if you have the attention span of a flea, it is one you need to actually watch to get the experience from it.
