Sex & Nudity

  • There is a naked woman laying in the bed sleeping, she's seen completely from the back and later from the front, breasts are slightly visible, but the picture is very blurry.
  • A woman is layin the bed full nude bottocks visible.
  • Full frontal female nudity is shown several times of the fully naked female from the bathtub scene in The Shining. A scene of female breast nudity is also shown of her in the bathtub with water.

Violence & Gore

  • A man plunges an axe into a woman, similar to what's done to dick Haloran in the original. The woman survives (via powers) and throws the man down a staircase.
  • A man repeatedly hits another man in the face with a pool table ball. Blood is all over the mans face and some of it sprays onto the floor
  • The deaths in this film are more frequent than in the first 'shining' film, but all contain similar amounts of violence and tone.
  • Danny gets axed in the leg (survives)
  • A woman cuts under her knee, Blood mists are shown after the cut.
  • A girl carves a mans cheek with a knife. Blood is visible making a snake bite.
  • A woman stabs a 12 year old boy in the stomach blood can be seen spraying on his face.

Profanity

  • 12 uses of "fuck", some uses of "hell", "damn", "bastard", "bitch" and "shit."

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The main character is an alcoholic. You see him drink a few times in the beginning, but he later tries to hold back.
  • Early on, a woman is seen snorting cocaine and in a later scene a man says he thinks the woman stole his money to buy it.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A number of characters hurt and kill people during this horror movie.
  • This film is more action-sci-fi than horror even though it does have some scary elements
  • "Doctor Sleep" isn't necessarily as scary as its predecessor "The Shining", but it contains a fair amount of scares and violence.
  • The True Knot is a pseudo-cannibalistic cult that goes around the country killing people who possess the shining. They steal their powers through killing them and consuming their "steam" (life force), discarding the bodies when finished. This can be pretty disturbing for some.
  • a child gets stabed in the stomach multiple times, you only see his face that gets bloody, but its very disturbing

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • A man touches a young woman's legs in a cinema. She rests her head on his shoulder as a response. It is later revealed she is 15. Never any sex or nudity

Violence & Gore

  • Billy shoots himself in the head with a rifle. Blood spurts from his head and we see blood pool beneath his head.
  • A shootout takes place in a forest between Danny, Billy, and The True Knot. This sequence is quite bloody as people get shot in the head, torso and other places with blood spurting.
  • A man is thrown from a vehicle during a car crash. His body then rapidly convulses and decays until turning into steam.
  • Rose The Hat (the villain) gets her hand caught in a filing cabinet. Her hand, for the rest of the film, is broken
  • Rose The Hat kills a woman. And while the murder takes place offscreen, we see her clench the wrist of the woman in her hand.
  • Rose The Hat is killed by all of the ghosts that live in The Overlook Hotel. Her body rapidly ages and decays before turning into a puff of smoke.
  • A father is shown with a knife impaled into his chest along with lots of blood beneath his body.
  • In the forest, Snakebite Andi shoots a man in the head, quick cut away, meant as a jump scare so ends quickly

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • When some characters die their bodies convulse and the person screams, frenetically aging and decaying in seconds-eventually disappearing in steam of his or her own.
  • Danny becomes possessed by all of the sprits that haunt The Overlook Hotel and tries to kill Abra.
  • There is a very disturbing scene in which a young boy is slowly murdered by the cult. His screams to make them stop are very heart wrenching, and as time progresses through the assault, he is covered in more and more blood. Though full audio isn't always present, you hear enough to feel deep distress
  • A young boy (12 years old) is walking home from a baseball game and is kidnapped by the true knot after being mind pushed to get into their van by snakebite Andi. And is seen at night and is tied down with rope and polls and is ritually tortured and screams in agony as he is stabbed and his wound being opened up repeatedly (his wound is unseen but there is a lot of blood shown) very disturbing and hard to watch. And probably the most disturbing in the whole movie
  • In the film, it's revealed that The Overlook Hotel is actually a sapient, eldritch evil entity that harvests people's souls for fun, and that the ghosts that inhabit it are an extension of its own twisted will. This might be disturbing to know.
  • Danny's sacrifice might be emotional.
