What a Tribute
ThomasDrufke26 January 2017
I have often found Legends' inclusion of several well-known events or significant people into their episodes to be forced and unnecessary. That time Einstein showed up? Come on. But this episode, being a George Lucas tribute, was the opposite. It didn't feel forced, his integration was light-hearted and creative, and most of all, it was a fun episode from beginning to end.

We were teased the return of both Rip Hunter and Captain Cold, though only the former actually appeared. I have to admit, I'm not a fan of either character and I think this show has worked just fine without Rip as the captain and Snart as a protagonist or antagonist. It's been a fun ride this season, there's no need to mess that up. Rip is entirely new character, however, one who never flew as the captain nor as even met any of Legends. Interestingly enough, he's stuck in the 1960's directing movies with George Lucas coincidentally based on a team of rag tag heroes.

I was glad to see that they didn't structure the episode so that the Legends were going to outright "inspire" Lucas to make Star Wars specifically because he saw laser guns and super powered beings. But they did influence him to become a director. But it wasn't until Ray and Nate lost their abilities mentally and physically following Lucas' dropping out of film school. Comically, everyone eventually got stuck in a garbage shoot/trash compactor at the hands of Darhk and Malcom. Hmm, I wonder where they got that idea.

But that's why this show is as fun as it is. It never takes itself too seriously and it never tries to be something it's not (at least in season 2). Did I need a Lucas tribute episode? No. I probably would have initially wanted more of a pure follow up to some of the Legion of Doom stuff in the mid-season finale, but the writers found a way to integrate a film icon into their story about the Legion looking for a famous medallion/spear. I mean, it doesn't get much more Indiana Jones than that. I'm nowhere near as invested in this show as I am with Prometheus or Savitar on the other shows (and I could care less that Rip was taken by Reverse Flash), but it's nice being able to kick back and enjoy a 40 minute time-traveling adventure every week.

+George Lucas inclusion was fun

+Nate & Ray losing powers because of Lucas

-I don't care that Rip is back

Raiders of the Lost Art: are you not entertained? Me: hella yeah!

Warning: Spoilers
YES! That's how you start after a long hiatus!

+ Opening sequence: no clue what Rip was planning but it was so exciting! Love the juxtaposition with screaming mimi Phillp Gasmer (really, Rip?).

+ Martin playing shrink to Mick and then faux shrink to Phillip. Mick is proof why you shouldn't be your own doctor.

+ That's right: RF is NEVER LATE! Recurring RF has to be the best part of LoT. It's always a surprise every time, and he never outstays his welcome, leaving you wanting more yet also dreading his appearance. That's how you do a super villain.

+ Jax finally kicking @ss and doing the reassuring. More of that please.

+ Ray/Nate inspired by George. Love that without him Nate would be a yoga instructor, ha! This would have been so hoaky if it weren't for the fact that people inspired by Gene Roddenbarry is why we have cell phones and iPads. And all the SW easter eggs!

+ Have to laugh at the writers trolling viewers with Ray/Amaya.

+ Great to see Amaya interact with Ray/Nate, it was beginning to feel like they were trying to make her into Mick's sitter. And she got the Princess Leia line!

+ Rescuing Rip has weight and consequence beyond saving a friend, that's the difference between saving someone you know and saving the world/time.

All around fun/excitement and everyone getting their scenes without it feeling clunky/shoehorned. Score: 9

Astonishing episode

Warning: Spoilers
The wait is over, the Legends are back. And so is Rip Hunter, who apparently doesn't at first seem to know about his past identity. Yet he in the end remembers.... This episode is also a tribute to George Lucas, worldwide known director, whom the Legends meet at times, when he was not yet that famous. And lots is in stake... And there is yet another plot line, and this is Mick Rory confiding in a person I would have least expected him to-Martin Stein, about seeing his Leonard Snart visions. Did I understand this right, or did Mick out to Stein? If yes, it would be the confirmation of the ColdWave shipping of some fans:) By the way, great acting of Dominic Purcell and Victor Garber in it. And I chuckled at "Marty" using "Astonishing" two times, as its his sorta catchphrase! Another highlight of the episode was the Sara-Jax talk. And the end was so funny, all of them watching a George Lucas movie!

All in all, a balance of comedy, and serious scenes. Best actors of the episode: Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Franz Drameh as Jax Jackson,Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory, Victor Garber as Martin Stein,Caity Lotz as Sara Lance

Enjoyable but obvious way to twart the doomies will probably be ignored

Warning: Spoilers
Another enjoyable, lighthearted episode. Micks worrying about the Snart visions and confiding in Stein, the whole George Lucas tribute and all the star wars/indiana jones references/quotes were pretty entertaining. Rip being a blundering idiot pothead was also welcome, making the character feel refreshing and funny. (I hope he never fully recovers to his boring old self)

Just one thing I noticed. At the end they have a part of the "Spear of Destiny". So the most obvious thing to do would be to destroy it as fast as possible. But I bet they are just gonna keep it around so the doomies can steal it in a later episode. For plot reasons...

(And if anyone is thinking yeah but it probably cannot be destroyed. Well at the very least they can keep it permanently out of the enemies had by dumping it in the same place they dumped the on the verge of exploding meteorite in the first series. Just fling it into the sun too.)
