Rewriting Reality
ThomasDrufke8 December 2016
Legends has always been a fun casual TV viewing for me, there's nothing too special, it's just a fun time traveling show. But tonight proved that this show can do just as much to impress in fight choreography, CGI, and set pieces, as it can in solid character development across the board.

I know the end had a tease to Rip Hunter's strange whereabouts in 1960's New York, but I'm really starting to dig Sara as the captain of the Waverider. Every time I think Caity Lotz is much better served on Arrow, the writers and her performance prove me wrong. No she's not wasting away on this show, and this episode did everything it could to prove the doubters wrong. I will always miss her presence alongside Oliver & company on Arrow, but her scenes with Stein and Malcom Merlyn gave me hope that this show could have a big second half.

So the Legion of Doom has almost completely formed as Merlyn joined the crew tonight. Now we only have Leonard Snart left before they can refer to themselves via that cheesy nickname. We've only seen a few appearances here and there from them, so they haven't gained the momentum yet as a group to intrigue me on their overall plans. In fact, even after the team gained the amulet, I can't say I still know what the goal is besides "rewriting reality". What are they actually going to do? No matter, their presence absolutely improved the intensity level of the episode.

Merlyn, Darhk, and Thawne decided to take their talents to 1920's Chicago to create a distraction for the Legends so they could get the amulet aboard the Waverider. Being a Chicagoan myself, this was an especially fun episode. Like everyone else, I'm fascinated by Al Capone and other prohibition era crime, so I'm glad the show chose to set the episode here. I didn't find anything special about the actor who played Capone, but he was good enough to not take me out of the episode. After all, the real highlight of the setting was seeing Caity Lotz as a flapper, and Nate & Ray's banter about who would get to be Elliot Ness.

Tonight's episode also saw Stein's aberration continue to cause problems as he is clearly emotionally distraught. His scene confessing to Sara & her response was spot on. However, I would like more consistency with the team's choosing to deal or not to deal with changing the timeline. Too often is there inconsistencies in this area. It's also worth noting that a spark was shared between Amaya and Mick. Figures Amaya would be positioned as a love interest for someone, but if it's going to be anyone, why not just have it be the most obscure character of the bunch. I'm excited to see what this relationship has in store.

+Malcom

+Sara is the clear leader

+Interesting romance blossoming

Fun! FUN!! FUN!!! THIS is worthy of a midseason finale.
imakk20018 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Meh stuff first:

  • If Ray meant Nate is current year Brad Pitt, then yes, he is.

  • Martin/Lily SL is still clunky.

  • Jax should have known that wasn't the real Martin.

  • Malcolm Merlyn.

Now the fun parts:

  • Mick taking over as team leader. Sometimes you just gotta criminal to do good. Bonnie and Clyde, hah! And Mick channeling Snart about covering your partner's back, I wibbled just a little. Speaking of.

  • Snart! Now I'm really worried about Mick.

  • RF! Using the genetic modifier! Did not expect that at all, and love that they didn't make it obvious nor spell out what actually took place. Also, RF looks so much more bad@ss in black.

  • RIP! He's sorta kinda back? Don't care, just come back so Nate can go.

Ep was fun, with a couple of twists that I didn't expect. Perfect way to end at midpoint and set up anticipation for the next half.

Score: 9

A very good episode with minor flaws

Warning: Spoilers
The mid-season finale of Legends was quite good, but had some minor flaws, which I would point out now at the beginning: First flaw was the Al Capone subplot. The whereabouts of if were quite unclear and messy. The second major flaw was the idea of Reverse Flash impersonating Martin Stein (quite unclear from the plot how he would be capable of doing this). Now I would speak of moments, which have gotten me in this episode: 1) Len Snart comeback in the flashbacks of Mick's 2) Martin Stein finally opening up more about Lily ( by the way great acting by Vic Garber again, he is so good at intense scenes). And though Sara Lance at first was like: "What the.., you have a daughter?" she afterwards heard him out. And Sara confessing to him he were a great teacher for her, this was what I also liked. 3) Mick Rory gets better as character every single episode!

Best acting performances: Caity Lotz as Sara Lance Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory Victor Garber as Martin Stein

Good episode actually

Warning: Spoilers
I like the character interactions in this episode, Ray and Nate, I like that they are getting close, and Mick and Amaya are also getting close to not mention Snart! it's good to see him again. I hope to see more of him teasing on Mick more in the future. and speedster is getting interesting, he can shapeshift now wow, but we are still left in the dark as to what Damien Dark and his associates want but they're still far more interesting and entertaining that last season's Savage. And it seemed Rip will be back in the next episode, about time.

The Chicago Way (2016)
nebohr1 May 2022
Thoroughly underwhelmed by the introductory scene.

While not the smartest nor the most logical of shows "Legends of Tomorrow" has a couple of things going for it; primarily the fact that DC comics have been around since 1934. So there is a huge, rabidly loyal fan base. Willing to accept, no, embrace nearly anything DC.

And, secondly, the sheer number of characters that exist should just about guarantee that fans will be able to relate to at least one of them.

Now, unfortunately, the productions appear to be on the cheap side. And they suffer with ancient CGI.

And the wipes are annoying.

With all that in mind we start this show with a 7 -star baseline.

More of that circular timeline dialog which...is...meaningless.

Martin is going senile.
