With a New Label Deal, Kacey Musgraves Faces the Future While Making Peace With Her Past (Exclusive)

It’s a warm, cloudless April Saturday in Tennessee, and right now, Kacey Musgraves’ life is a Kacey Musgraves song. The singer-songwriter is driving southbound to rural Williamsport — exactly an hour from her Nashville home — where she’ll be going horseback riding and rambling along the river with a few friends.
“A good friend of mine has a beautiful farm on hundreds of acres,” she says in her Texas twang. “It’s on the Duck River, which is one of the most biologically diverse rivers in the world. It has all these specific species of things that don’t exist anywhere else. It’s really clean and beautiful, organic and peaceful. My friends and I go out there, bring a picnic and just live our best lives — barefoot, dirty, in the river. It’s so fun.”
Excursions like these have colored her songwriting on tracks like “Space Cowboy,” “Oh What a World,...

Ahead of their CinemaCon presentation on Monday, Sony Pictures has debuted the first official poster for their upcoming slasher sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer and it teases the return of a familiar hook.
While we'll have to wait until this summer to find out who's wielding the hook, we do now that the movie will feature the return of both Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson. The duo starred together in the 1997 horror classic I Know What You Did Last Summer and its 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
WIth a poster dropping today, we wouldn't be shocked to see the first teaser trailer drop during the studio's presentation on Monday night. It should among a handful of upcoming Sony projects highlighted during the event.

Canada’s actors are set for a new deal with the country’s producers.
Over the holiday period, actors union Actra reached a tentative agreement for a new Independent Production Agreement (Ipa) with the Canadian Media Producers Association (Cmpa) and the Association Québécoise de la Production Médiatique (Aqpm), which respectively handle English- and French-language content in the country.
Actra is asking its members to review and ratify the new agreement when the details become public. This will begin on Tuesday. January 14 at 12 p.m. Et / 9 a.m. Pt, and close a week later on January 21. A townhall webinar is being held on January 13 to discuss terms.

Imagine this: You’ve been documenting your favorite albums throughout the year and you are ready to write your Top 10 list, but then that artist who never makes bad music decides to bless us with a surprise release in the fourth quarter.
In 2022 it was Sza and Sos, and it only took a few listens of that marvelous album to rise to No. 2 on my list, necessitating a rewrite. This year it’s Kendrick Lamar and Gnx — a last-minute drop that easily made it to this year’s list, along with several other stunning projects that have been in heavy rotation in my AirPods and appeared all over my Spotify Wrapped.
1. Beyoncé, Cowboy Carter
At 27 tracks, Cowboy Carter is more than an album. It’s supreme art that also serves as a history lesson. Reclaiming a genre created by Black people, Beyoncé tackles country music in her own way, with stunning results.

Kacey Musgraves is a confident earth mother in the new music video for “The Architect,” her Grammy-nominated song off her latest album, Deeper Well.
Filmed somewhere in a desert landscape, the video finds Musgraves communing with nature and all its earthly creations. She ponders a shiny red apple, rides a white horse, and walks through creeping snake-like roots. Musgraves also assembles an outsized jigsaw puzzle made of grass, piecing together a grand lawn.
But the segment that’s sure to get the most buzz involves Musgraves rolling around naked in mud,...

Kacey Musgraves stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night to perform “Arm’s Length,” a song that appeared on Deeper Well: Deeper Into the Well, the expanded edition of her acclaimed 2024 album Deeper Well.
Bathed in reverb and backed by her denim-donned five-piece band, Musgraves provides a gorgeous rendition of “Arm’s Length.” Despite such a warm arrangement, Musgraves sings of a relationship rendered cold and distant: “I gave you water/ But I couldn’t make you drink/ Keepin’ me just within reach/ Always holding me at arms length,” she sings as the band behind her swells. Watch her performance of “Arm’s Length” below.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot cast is coming together in a promising way. We just learned that Golden Globe Award nominee Billy Campbell has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. I wonder who he could be playing in the slasher.
Campbell joins a growing list of actors who have already been announced to be in the cast, such as Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King.
Freddie Prinze Jr. was announced recently to have officially joined the cast, reprising his role of Ray Bronson from the original film and its 1998 sequel. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brandy Norwood are also in talks to return in their roles as Julie James and Karla Wilson.
Additionally, Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sui Wonders is currently in discussions about joining the cast of the upcoming Sony movie. However, who she will be portraying in the film is unknown.

Sheesh, you could have at least waved. On the vaguely Celtic-sounding folk song “Irish Goodbye,” Kacey Musgraves explains that she’s mostly a pretty forgiving person and pretty much liked you right up until you had the presumptuous audacity to ghost her. “I want to respect you and you know I tried,” she sings, her words melting into triplets of tolerance until they break: “But there ain’t much respect in an Irish goodbye.”

Few country stars have been embraced by the Grammys like Kacey Musgraves has. The singer-songwriter rose to prominence with her mainstream debut, “Same Trailer Different Park,” which became one of the most acclaimed albums of 2013, earning an 89 score on Metacritic and establishing Musgraves as one to watch in the industry. She received four Grammy nominations that year and won Best Country Album in a major upset against Taylor Swift’s commercial blockbuster “Red.” Musgraves followed that with another Grammy-nominated record, “Pageant Material,” but her third try was the charm: “Golden Hour” won Album of the Year and swept its three other nominations in the country field. Then came the pop-leaning “Star-Crossed,” which nevertheless received two country nominations. This year Musgraves is back with “Deeper Well,” which many are considering a return to form and a folk-country masterpiece. She is for sure getting her usual country nominations. But can she crossover to the general field again?...

On her sixth studio album, Deeper Well, Kacey Musgraves digs into both her psyche and the sounds of folk music, making for an affecting and mellow set of songs. The album kicks off with the crystalline, fingerpicked intro of “Cardinal,” an almost startling introduction given the pop-heavy sound of Musgraves’s last album, Star-Crossed, before giving way to a more contemporary acoustic-guitar passage as the singer muses about lost loved ones. It’s an intimate and effective tone-setter for the rest of the album, as many of the songs here revolve around memory and loss.
The title track establishes the thesis of Deeper Well: “I’m saying goodbye to the people/That I feel are real good at wasting my time/No regrets, baby, I just think that maybe/You go your way and I’ll go mine.” The gentle guitars and unobtrusive drumming create a soundscape that echoes the...

A palpably moody cut from their album Everything So Far, the song, and dance, have spread across TikTok like wildfire. Garrett Lee’s original video has already racked up more than 5 million views, and there have been thousands of new videos replicating his dance posted to the site since. Last April, Sphere Media took the Canadian Screen Awards by storm with 22 awards for its scripted content, including a record 12 wins for the historical Black drama “The Porter” and seven for queer comedy “Sort Of.” It was a big night for Canada’s third-largest independent producer, and in particular for Jennifer Kawaja, Sphere’s president of scripted and feature films for English Canada.
Previously, Kawaja spent decades heading up Sienna Films with her business partner, Julia Sereny, helming several award-winning projects like “Cardinal,” “Trickster” and “One Dead Indian.” The duo sold the company to Kew Media Group in 2017 and in 2020, Montreal-based Datsit Sphere snatched it up when Kew was placed into receivership. Last year, Sphere restructured and rebranded under a single banner with the intention of streamlining content creation, production and distribution.

Creed III has added another huge box office record to its earth-shattering opening weekend. The film is the third entry in the Creed franchise, which follows Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the son of the character Apollo Creed from the Rocky franchise. Although Sylvester Stallone did not return to reprise his role as Rocky Balboa for a third time, the film - which is also Jordan's directorial debut - features the return of Tessa Thompson as Bianca Taylor and Florian Munteanu as Viktor Drago alongside franchise newcomer Jonathan Majors as Damian Anderson.
According to Box Office Mojo, a worldwide opening weekend of $100.4 million has put the expectation-shattering Creed III in rarefied air. In just three days, it has become one of only three 2023 Hollywood releases to have passed the $100 million benchmark. “New Amsterdam” gave Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) yet another impossible problem to solve with this week’s episode of the NBC medical drama, which saw Max and the staff grapple with the historic name of the New York City hospital and the brutal past that the New Amsterdam moniker conjures up for a Native American patient of Lenape descent.
TheWrap spoke with “New Amsterdam” staff writer Shanthi Sekaran about what she and showrunner David Schulner were trying to explore with the episode, which features Tantoo Cardinal (“Stumptown,” “Dances With Wolves”) playing professor Jane Munsee, a Native American woman who has a large blood clot in her leg but refuses treatment at New Amsterdam because of what its name represents to her as a Native woman whose people...

The four join the already announced cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons and Lily Gladstone. The movie, set in 1920s Oklahoma, depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.
Cardinal, whose credits include Dances With Wolves and Godless, will play the role of Lizzie Q, the mother of Mollie Burkhart, played by Gladstone.
Myers, Collins and Dion will play Mollie’s sisters, Anna, Reta and Minnie.
Scorsese is producing Killers of the Flower Moon off a screenplay by Eric Roth. Producing alongside the Oscar-winning filmmaker are Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas and Appian Way Productions.
