The beginning monologue around the campfire is almost word for word the same as the campfire story told in Friday the 13th Part 2.
It is clear, the screenwriters were horror movie fans - There is a nice tribute to Adrienne Barbeau, who has a bit part in the film, in which one of two TV crew members is quoting dialogue from Barbeau's character in the Fog in which she is warning the sailors about the fog bank. In the opening scene, in which the kids are killed, the dialogue of the couple killed in the sleeping bag is directly from Halloween 2 ("It's cold out there. It can get cold in here.")
When Brian Thompson is using the FLIR and he sees a figure he says 'Out there, past them trees. I see you' this is a reference to the film Predator, which also uses infrared to hunt.
Adrienne Barbeau plays a character named Wilma, as she did in Creepshow.
The character Sam is wearing a t-shirt with the name LOOMIS on the back, an obvious nod to Halloween's Dr. Sam Loomis
