Not bad for a horror comedy anthology...
paul_haakonsen25 October 2022
When I sat down to watch the 2016 Thai horror movie "11-12-13 Rak Kan Ja Tai" (aka "Ghost is All Around"), I had never heard about it, nor did I know that it was an anthology. Usually I am not overly keen on anthologies, because they tend to be dubious. But since this was a Thai horror anthology, of course I opted to give director Sarawut Wichiensarn's anthology a fair chance.

The first story in the anthology is titled "11th" and it was actually a rather well-written storyline. I enjoyed this particular segment a lot because the writer keeps the audience in the dark as to what is happening, and the construction of the plot is really nicely done. And there is a big, and unforeseen, twist to the story towards the end, something that I definitely enjoyed. There is something in "11th" that didn't work out so well, though, and that was the thing with the enlarged eyes on the female ghost. It just made no sense and it wasn't scary at all. If anything, it made her look more like a cartoon character than a scary apparition. The acting in the first segment was quite good.

"12th" is the second segment in the anthology, and it has a good amount of comedy and funny moments in it, which "11th" didn't have. So if you enjoy comedy in the horror, then "12th" will be a good one for you. The storyline is good, but not as interesting as the one in "11th". The funny moments are good and director Sarawut Wichiensarn uses the comedy at the right moments to further the narrative. There is a twist to the storyline here as well, though not as impactful as the one in "11th". Again, good acting performances in this segment as well.

And that leads us to "13th", which is the final segment in this anthology. This is actually also the least interesting and entertaining of the three stories told in "11-12-13 Rak Kan Ja Tai". Sure, there is a good message about friendship here, but in terms of it being a horror comedy, then "13th" felt weak. The acting in "13th" was good though.

Something that works well in favor of "11-12-13 Rak Kan Ja Tai" and all three segments is the way that the stories are connected. I liked that part of the anthology quite a lot, as it made for a good continuity.

My rating of "11-12-13 Rak Kan Ja Tai" lands on a six out of ten stars.
