Shout! Studios has acquired U.S. and Canada rights to Studiocanal and Working Title’s cross-cultural British romantic comedy “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” with a view to releasing it in late spring, it was revealed at Berlin’s European Film Market on Tuesday.
Directed by veteran Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (“Elizabeth”), “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” follows documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), for whom swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbor Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan (Sajal Aly). As Zoe films Kaz’s journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder...

Not all superheros wear capes, masks, wings or a tight bustier. Most are normal people who have overcome adversity to inspire and help impact people around the world. National Geographic’s new YouTube documentary series “Impact with Gal Gadot” showcases six such women who have helped and improved the lives of others.
Among these half dozen heroes are: Kameryn Everett, a black Detroit-based figure skater and coach who encourages young girls to follow in her footsteps; Tuany Nascimento, a ballet dancer teaching her craft to young girls in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Rio de Janiero; and Kelly Ellis, a surf therapy facilitator in California who lost her twin sister Audrey last year to Covid-19 and is working with other women who are grieving.

Arriving in theaters and on VOD this Friday is Clive Tonge’s Mara, a supernatural thriller centered on a paranormal entity of the same name who strikes her victims by utilizing sleep paralysis as a weapon.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Botet about his creative process on Mara, how he approaches collaborating with filmmakers on bringing their visions to life, and he even discussed the freedom he experienced recently on Two Pigeons (aka Freehold), in which he plays a stowaway living inside a guy’s apartment and takes full advantage of his stealthy status, as the makeup-free experience allowed him to really let loose.
So great to speak with you, Javier. In terms of Mara, and maybe this applies to other movies as well, but when you're coming on to do a character like this, what is your process as an actor? Do you work out the physicality before the makeup process,...

To celebrate the release of Freehold, available on DVD & Digital 9th October, we have an official t-shirt and quad poster available to giveaway courtesy of Precision Pictures.
An unmissable gem, this dark and demented British horror comedy sees an amoral estate agent getting his comeuppance, when a man whose life he destroyed begins a deliciously malicious campaign of revenge.
Javier Botet (The Revenant, The Conjuring 2) is extraordinary as Orlan, in a performance that is, at first, comic, then shifts gear into something more dangerous and sinister. Fast-rising BBC Radio 1Xtra star Mim Shaikh, in his debut film, is terrific as the harassed estate agent, and manages what most people considered impossible – to make you feel sorry for a brick peddler!
The film also features a fantastic cast of up-and-coming British screen talent – including Black Mirror star Kola Bokinni, who appeared in this year’s Brad Pitt starrer War Machine,...

Mim Shaikh in Freehold
Hussein (Mim Shaikh) is a real estate agent in the cutthroaat property market of modern London. Determined to get ahead, he hasn't given a thought to who he steps on in the process, but one man, Orlan (Javier Botet), has paid a high price for Hussein's success and isn't going to take it lying down. Secretly moving into Hussein's flat, he begins a campaign of revenge.
That's the plot of Freehold, a socially astute comedy that goes to some very dark places. It reminds me of when, as children, my brother and I used to blame any mess or unexplained thing that happened in the house on our supposed secret lodger, Mr Nowhere Man. I suspect a lot of kids have tried things like this, and I suggest as much to Dom Bridges, the film's director.
Dom laughs. "That's a good way of putting it actually - blaming someone else.

Stars: Mim Shaikh, Javier Botet, Mandeep Dhillon, Kola Bokinni, Michael McKell | Written by Dominic Bridges, Rae Brunton | Directed by Dominic Bridges
The feature debut from acclaimed commercials director Dom Bridges and written by Rae Brunton (the Outpost franchise) Freehold is a dark urban morality tale with an underlying streak of jet black comedy. Hussein, a wide-boy estate agent, doesn’t realise he’s sharing his apartment with a forgotten stranger, a master of concealment… until his malicious campaign of deranged sweet revenge starts to really hit home. A roof above our heads is a basic human need so why are we all fighting each other over it?
Originally titled 2Pigeons (a title that has more in common with the films story than you can imagine), Freehold shares a lot in common with previous Frightfest flicks Housebound and Hangman, in so much as all three films deal with homes being encroached...

The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”
The fest is styled a 4-day celebration of horror that runs from April 24 – 30 at the historic Timberline Lodge located in Mt. Hood, Oregon, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as the location of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The new festival comes from some of the same minds behind the now-defunct Stanley Film Festival, a similar horror-themed gathering based in a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado that inspired Stephen King to write his 1977 “Shining” novel.

First-time feature filmmaker Dominic Bridges’ dark comedy Two Pigeons recently enjoyed its world premiere at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival. The movie stars Javier Botet as a man so obsessed with his pursuit of revenge that he stealthily moves into the home of his intended victim, a slick real estate agent Hussein (Mim Shaikh), and spends all of his alone time sabotaging the man’s entire life—from his toiletries to his relationships to even his promising career.
Daily Dead recently had the chance to catch up with UK director Bridges about his first time at the helm of a feature film, and he also discussed his approach to the story of Two Pigeons, his experiences working with Botet, and more.

During the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, I had the opportunity to check out several movies on the fringe of the horror genre, including M.F.A., Assholes, and Two Pigeons, and you can read my thoughts on all three films right here:
M.F.A.: An uncomfortable and devastating exploration of the trauma that comes from rape and sexual violence, Natalie Leite’s M.F.A. punched a hole right through my soul. While rape is certainly an upsetting topic for most, writer Leah McKendrick’s approach to how the film’s protagonist, Noelle (the amazing Francesca Eastwood), handles her ordeal becomes something of a cinematic anthem of empowerment once the young woman takes matters into her own hands.
In M.F.A., we meet Noelle, who is completing the grad student program in Fine Arts, but she can’t seem to break past her own sense of mediocrity when it comes to creating her art.

Two Pigeons plays off one of my biggest paranoias. This idea of comfort and safety being nothing but illusions. We convince ourselves that when we’re not home, a locked door keeps unwanted snoopers out of our domiciles. Each night, we drift to sleep assuming that nothing will happen while our body lies unresponsive. What if this wasn’t true? Filmmaker Dominic Bridges follows in the footsteps of home-invasion thrillers like Intruder and Hangman in this perverse “comedy” about privacy being earned. Those sick enough can torture us when we’re at our most vulnerable, from wherever they please. The problem is, can Bridges find torment before flying the coop?
Mim Shaikh stars as Hussein, an “oily” real estate agent with questionable morals. Each day he goes through the same routine, sun up to sun down. Wake up, shower, brush teeth, leave for work. When Hussein walks out the door,...

Two Pigeons: Javier Botet Is The Secret Guest You Do Not Want In Clip From SXSW Selected Dark Comedy
Spindly limbed Spaniard Javier Botet has been a go-to performer in the horror world in recent years, his (beyond) slender frame making him an ideal candidate to go under layers of latex while playing creatures and villains in the likes of Mama and Crimson Peak. But the fact that the prosthetics come off of Botet for SXSW selected ultra dark comedy Two Pigeons make him no less icky. At least not according to this just released clip from the film. With little over a month to go until Austin plays host to SXSW 2017 for another year, organizers of the annual showcase have announced that James Franco’s drama The Disaster Artist has been added to the stacked lineup.
Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, Franco’s passion project is set to recount the infamous story behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s widely-derided pic that has since gone on to become something of a cult classic. No release date has been set, but we know that the feature will be written and directed by Franco, who stars as the eccentric Wiseau, and features a cast comprised of Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and former Community star Alison Brie. Bryan Cranston and Zach Braff are among those set to cameo.
