Sex & Nudity

  • There is euphemism/allusion to sexual/ marital rape
  • Many kisses between teens are shown. Nothing too bad
  • There is a kissing scene at the end of season 3
  • A teen boy gropes a teen girl's breast against her will and forcibly kisses her. She pushes him away and storms off before anything more can escalate.
  • No sex scenes, no nudity
  • Over the course of the series, there are implications made more than once about intimate relations, usually referring to an older married couple, but even sometimes referring to younger kids and their curiosity about the subject.
  • Sex is mentioned very briefly in a few scenes. A girl gets her first period and there is an episode focused on this.
  • There's a discussion about the facts of life using a mouse in a man's pocket as a metaphor that may be confusing for younger viewers. An episode is dedicated to Anne getting her first period.

Violence & Gore

  • Flash backs to annes life in the orphanage show her being beaten. Brief.
  • There is a fight seen between two teen boys and one of them gets their ear burned badly.
  • Season 3: A boy slips on a rock and cuts his leg open. He screams loudly and we see the large wound. A woman stitches the wound which is shown in a few shots. It looks quite painful so it can be hard to watch if you're squeamish.
  • A boy trips over a stone and cuts his leg and has to get stitches. Blood is shown and there are various close ups of the stitches. 2 boys have a fight and one of them has their head pushed into a stove. You see him screaming and a brief showing of a burnt ear.
  • Conflict and some physical exchanges shown mostly in the context of flashbacks as Anne is haunted by her past. Adults verbally abuse her, calling her names and suggesting she's worthless. In some cases they also hit her, and it's implied that she suffers hunger in their care. In one brief scene, a man attempts to abduct her and then turns his attention on two young boys.
  • In season 2, a boy accidentally knocks another boy off a ladder and makes him break his wrist. While it was clear the boy was trying to antagonize, he obviously hadn't meant for it to go that far.

Profanity

  • Some mild Profanity. A few uses. Heard the words: A**, D***, & H***.
  • Racial slurs are said outright or implied.
  • Anne is called names like "trash" because she's an orphan.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Matthew smokes his pipe as was normal at the time.
  • Underage drinking in about 2 occasions. 1 accidental.
  • One famous scene shows a young teen getting drunk on currant wine, which she has mistaken for innocuous cordial.
  • In season 2 a grown man tries to pressure a teen boy into drinking, getting up close in his face and putting the flask by his mouth. The boy refuses and eventually, the man lets him go, but we see the boy crying later and hiding after what happened.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are many frightening and intense scenes most are flashbacks to anne's past.
  • A woman is having a baby. It is disturbing for a younger audience. She is yelling and a man goes to help her get it out although nothing is shown
