- Set in what could be the same universe of Fargo and The Big Lebowski, THE TOY GUN is a fun-yet-gritty dark comedy about a meek young man who impulsively robs a bank to prove to his ex-wife that he is courageous and masculine. A police investigation engulfs everyone except our unassuming hero, who is, ironically, completely ignored.
- Set in what could be the same universe of Fargo and The Big Lebowski, THE TOY GUN is a fun-yet-gritty dark comedy about a meek young man who impulsively robs a bank to prove to his ex-wife that he is courageous and masculine. Elio Sironi (John Hannah) is the boss of smallish bank branch and is married. he is very stingy and won't even allow his staff to use a heater in the dead of winter. He is having an affair with Giulia Levati (Hana Sofia Lopes) who is the sexy ex-wife of Ruggero Levati (Luke Allen-Gale). Giulia is not turned on by Ruggero as she feels that he is not a risk taker. She left Ruggero the day she met Sironi.
One of the bank employees turns on the heater and that trips the alarm system, so Sironi orders it shut off. Along with the alarm system, the security cameras are also turned off and luckily that's the moment that Ruggero decides to rob that bank branch to prove his masculinity to his wife. Ruggero makes away with 143500 euros. Gaetano Lolli (Anthony LaPaglia) is Ruggero's new neighbor in the building and had seen Ruggero leaving with his toy gun. So the next day, he punches Ruggero unconscious and has a chat with him in his apartment. Once he is convinced that Ruggero is not the mafia, he leaves him and his money alone.
The next day Ruggero pays off his mortgage loan, which he used to help his wife open a spa for men, which is held at Sironi's bank branch. The spa is where Sironi met Giulia for the first time. Lolli tells Ruggero that he served as accountant for the mafia and is now under police protection for helping them convict his bosses. He has some savings in a bank, which he cannot access and needs Ruggero's help.
Sironi tells Giulia that he suspects her working with Ruggero for robbing his bank, as he is not sure how Ruggero made a payment of 10,000 euros on his account. Giulia calls Ruggero and wants to meet him to find out. Meanwhile the police detective Officer Jonta (Julian Sands) figures out that Sironi is having sex with Giulia. He suspects Sironi robbed his own bank through a crook, to help Giulia's struggling spa business.
Sironi's boss Fortis pays him a visit and demands his resignation on 3 accounts 1. 3 robberies in his bank branch, all unexplained 2. adultery with Giulia 3. a weekend in a high-end resort at 10K euros a head, with not even a single cent coming out of Sironi's accounts. Meanwhile Lolli advises Ruggero against meeting Giulia, as she has always cheated on him multiple times and he has always taken her back, only to be betrayed again. Lolli also reads correctly that Ruggero was hoping to get caught, so he could profess his love for Giulia on national TV.
Lolli asks Ruggero to get some money from his safe deposit box, which he does. But Ruggero is followed while doing that. Lolli offers Ruggero to join him in Brazil once he helps him collect cash from all his safe deposit boxes. Meanwhile it emerges that Sironi was working in cahoots with mafia boss Sante Casoria (Federico Castelluccio) to rob his own bank twice before. In exchange for help, he received a cut, which he used for the resort payments. Sironi asks Casoria to keep an eye on Giulia to figure out who robbed his bank for the third time.
Casoria has one his men attack Giulia, but she is saved by her neighbors, who give her shelter. That way Casoria can't find her anymore. Sironi asks him to stake Ruggero, while Giulia calls Jonta about the attack on her. She admits to Jonta that she is having an affair with Sironi. Sironi paid for her spa and her current apartment. She also tells Jonta that Sironi thinks she asked Ruggero to rob the bank, as he paid off his mortgage dues the next day, but she doesn't think Ruggero can rob anything.
Sironi threatens Casoria to convince Ruggero to turn himself him, else he would call the police on Casoria. Casoria is enraged and shoots Sironi dead. The next morning Casoria visits Ruggero's apartment, but Lolli is awake and outside and shoots Casoria dead. Lolli thinks Casoria was there to shoot him and not Ruggero. He leaves for Brazil and calls the head of police to say that someone on the inside has betrayed his location to Casoria. The Police think Sironi and Casoria were working in cahoots to rob his banks and when Sironi threatened Casoria, Casoria killed him to eliminate witnesses.
Finally, Ruggero goes to Giulia and returns his wedding ring to her and finally stops pining for her. Giulia is enraged that Ruggero no longer values her. Ruggero joins Lolli on the flight to Brazil.
