Ukraine doesn’t need mercy, pity or condolences, noted Film.UA Group CEO Victoria Yarmoshchuk at MipTV on Monday. What it needs are new projects, international co-operations and jobs for people in the creative sector.
“On the first day of war, we realized that content is our weapon. Ukrainian stories are not local stories; they can be understood everywhere. The best thing the world can do right now is to collaborate with us,” she said.
Representatives of Film.UA Group, Media Group Ukraine, 1+1 Media and StarLightMedia, once rivals for content and viewers, came together in Cannes during a “Stand with Ukrainian Content Industry” session, urging international players to notice their showrunners, producers and writers, ready to work right now.
“We would like to be much more integrated in the international media community once the war ends,” said Inna Filipova, head of sales at 1+1 Media. She used to live in Bucha on the outskirts of Kyiv,...

Holdover title “Deliver Us From Evil” once again topped the Korean box office, over the weekend. It earned $6.74 million for a cumulative of $26.5 million after just 11 days on release.
The hitman on a last job thriller managed a strong hold, losing only 37% in its second weekend, compared with $10.6 million on its debut. It held on to a 51% market share. Its trajectory should see “Deliver” overtake “Peninsula,” until now the biggest post-coronavirus title, within a couple of days.
New release title, “Ok! Madam,” a comedy starring Uhm Jeong-hwa, opened in second place with a $4.57 million haul. It played on 1,288 screens and accounted for 35% of the weekend box office.
“Steel Rain: Summit” which had played as the top film three weeks ago, was a distant third. It managed $619,000, a drop of 58% compared with last weekend. Its cumulative is now $11.9 million.
Overall, the aggregate weekend score was little changed at $13 million, compared with $13.4 million the previous session.

Fear of the coronavirus increased its impact on the South Korean cinema industry. Films were cancelled and box office revenues dropped for a second weekend.
Ticket sales fell by some 10%, compared to the previous weekend, which itself followed an already depressed previous session and a slow January.
That caused Megabox to delay its Jeon Do-yeon- and Jung Woo-sung-starring crime thriller “Beasts Clawing at Straws,” from Feb. 12 to Feb. 19. Ukrainian animation “The Stolen Princess,” which had been scheduled to release on Feb. 5, is indefinitely halted.
Cj Entertainment’s “Closet” managed $5.04 million from 681,000 admissions in five days to open on top. Showing on 1,192 screens nationwide, the local mystery drama accounted for 48% of the total weekend box office. Starring Ha Jung-woo (“Ashfall”) and Kim Nam-gil (“The Shameless”), “Closet” is the story of a father who engages an exorcist to help find his missing daughter.
Another Wednesday opener, “Birds of Prey” landed in second.

Fear of the spread of the coronavirus that is sweeping China has begun to contaminate the film industry in South Korea.
Box office between Friday and Sunday dropped by 70% compared to last week’s 4-day holiday weekend and by 30% compared with the weekend before that. Though the virus may only be partly responsible.
“We suppose that it is partly due to the coronavirus threat, while at this point it is more because few new films were released last week,” a Megabox spokesperson told Variety. South Korea has 15 recorded cases of coronavirus and no fatalities.
Leading exhibitor, Cgv has temporarily closed a few complexes that were visited by two people known to have been infected by the virus. CineQ has also shut down a branch.
