Slow Burning, Edge of Your Seat With a Twist
tlupejkis8 February 2017
Though, I was in fact hoping to find a 'secret Sherlock' episode, I was happy with Apple Tree Yard as a whole.

I see some complaints it was TOO SLOW. It only has 4 episodes, give it a chance, lol. Have a bit of patience.

It had intrigue, lust, complicated family and marital relations. Humans that make poor choices and a question as to who is the villain.

I loved the sets from just the Apple Tree Yard SW1 Alley to the chapel of the Commons.

If people wanted Sherlock and didn't get it, they got a good mystery at least. On top of being a thriller and a damn good drama.

You get an insanely intense and mind blowing finale.

Emily Watson was great and the rest of the cast were certainly very good. Creepy ending...I hope for another series of this! 8/10

Not everything has to all out action & fast pace
lapaulmac28 May 2020
So yes it's a slow slow burn , but very deliberate Why do people think everything has to be all out action & fast paced drama. This is not meant to be Line of Duty. Overall a strong powerful storyline and Superb performances from the lead actors. Also thought the courtroom scenes were excellent. Maybe a few holes throughout the plot but nothing that took too much away from the end result. Has you riveted from start to finish even if the pace is somewhat pedestrian at times.

A slow burner that ignites at the end.
Sleepin_Dragon27 September 2020
Scientist Yvonne falls for a mystery man whilst answering questions at a Commons Select committee, the stranger would have a big impact on Yvonne's life.

It's starts off very well, and gets better and better, the fourth episode is brilliant, the best of the four.

It's an interesting story, that goes in the most unusual and unexpected directions, you are taken on Yvonne's rollercoaster ride. You will be curious about Yvonne until the last.

The acting is the show's primary strength, Bonnar and Chaplin are brilliant, however Emily Watson deserved awards for her portrayal of Yvonne, she is one of the best, and this highlights how awesome she is.

I would highly recommend this drama. 8/10.

Apple Tree Yard is one of the rarest drama on TV which gives a sensible message which makes it worth watching.

Warning: Spoilers
Apple Tree Yard (2017): I have no idea about this series or the book it was adapted from prior watching this.I just picked up it randomly as it is just 4-episode long and labeled as thriller. This year I already got a surprise in the form of Cardinal (which I have no idea just like this one but Loved it after watching). SO does always random stuff turns out to be better surprises? Plot: Married with two grown-up children, Yvonne Carmichael (Emily Watson) lives a contented, conventional suburban life. But her world spirals into chaos, when a chance encounter leads to an impulsive and passionate affair with a charismatic stranger (Ben Chaplin). Despite all her careful plans to keep her home life and career safe and separate from her affair, fantasy and reality soon begin to overlap and everything she values is put at risk, as a life-changing act of violence leads to a Crown Court trial.

My Review: To be frank Apple Tree Yard could easily fit into a 2hr+ feature film rather than 4-episode series. It doesn't mean that series is bad but it felt slow paced and with that content and some serious writing, this could become one of the best thrillers in film.

Apple Tree Yard is thought provoking effective drama which is a must watch for everyone and it has lot of scenes with amazing sensibilities.Like the scene in which Yvonne bursts out during dinner and how Gary threatens adviser who insults rape victims, the dialogues are very good. And as for the stunning twist right at the end, did you still have Yvonne down as 'a victim' after that? Apple Tree Yard entirely belongs to Emily Watson's stunning performance. She is exceptional as illustrious scientist Yvonne Carmichael, mastering each scene as the action plummets from steamy mid-life trysts with the mysterious Mark Costley (Ben Chaplin) to "the first honest depiction of rape on television" – and on to a court case that threatens not just her reputation but her entire existence. Mark Bonnar and Ben Chaplin are also very effective in their roles.

So,Apple Tree Yard is one of the rarest drama on TV which gives a sensible message which makes it worth watching.

My Rating 7.25/10

Magnificent Emily Watson
jlthornb513 October 2017
Ms. Emily Watson gives the performance of a lifetime in this raw, jagged story of a middle-aged woman who discovers her fiery sexuality with a stranger and suffers a trauma of incredible profundity. Watson sets the screen on fire with her presence and her smoldering sexual power. Her beauty is mesmerizing and her eyes speak more than a thousand pages of intricate dialog. This a showcase for a truly great actress and all that she brings to the part she plays with such passion. Watson is a treasure and one of the finest actors Britain has ever produced. Apple Tree Yard is a fine piece and what Emily Watson achieves in it will leave you gasping for breath and stunned with wonder.

Humourless but gripping thriller
ComptonSpencer19 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Before "Apple Tree Yard" premiered, media coverage and promotional materials seemed to be selling it as a drama looking at the (supposedly) under-explored theme of extramarital affairs resulting from the sexual frustrations of middle-aged, middle-class married life.

This topic is, thankfully, only the focus of the first episode of this four-parter; while the theme remains as an undercurrent in subsequent episodes, the main plot thread descends into standard thriller territory. Emily Watson is brilliantly understated as Dr. Yvonne Carmichael, the ordinary woman living a comfortable existence who is unexpectedly seduced by the mysterious Mark Costley. It is harder to evaluate Ben Chaplin's performance as the latter due to the mysterious nature of the character, but that nature is skillfully conveyed; one can understand why Yvonne would be curious about someone so enigmatic. The other actors are convincing in their roles, but the parts they are given are somewhat underwritten (even the vital character of rapist George Selway is denied any motivation other than Yvonne). This flaw is, however, not a major one; the focus of the series is Yvonne, with every scene taking place from her perspective. Yvonne is a character made fascinating by her normality and the questions her actions raise.

The show's makers seem to be asking the viewer "What would you do in this situation?" Some reviewers have dismissed the plot as laughable because it depends on Yvonne doing things that no so-called "rational" person would do. As observers, we are invited to ponder whether we could remain rational in times of extreme stress, fear and uncertainty. While most viewers would probably disagree with at least one of Yvonne's decisions, few of us could state with confidence that we would always act as we would wish to, regardless of circumstances.

In many ways, Yvonne (and, by extension, Watson) is the series saving grace. By focusing on her thoughts, desires, actions and reactions, the viewer is distracted from how generic and predictable the plot is, particularly in the later episodes. From the moment Costley neither affirms nor denies Yvonne's assumption that he is a spy, we know that he will be revealed as a fantasist. As soon as Yvonne decides not to tell the police about her affair with Costley, we know that it will be used as a bombshell revelation in the courtroom. The makers want us to be surprised as the twists and turns the story takes, but there is nothing truly unexpected in the series (with the exception of the rape, which I will come to shortly). Case in point: the final revelation that Costley only killed Selway because he believed Yvonne had told him to. Ending twists (as M. Night Shyamalan would agree) should impact the viewer and make them reassess everything they have just witnessed. This one is more of an "oh" moment; in no way does it subvert viewer expectations and assumptions. Instead, it merely reinforces what we know about Costley: he sees himself as a hero and his manslaughter as a heroic deed.

What is surprising (and revealing) about this series is how little it has to say about adultery. Considering how the BBC chose to promote it as a mature look at the topic, it would be reasonable for one to expect some sort of message. Strangely enough, despite the serious tone and lack of comedy the series presents, that message never comes. One might argue that adultery is implicitly condemned through the consequences of Yvonne's affair, but those consequences also hinge on her being raped and her lover having a personality disorder, while the affair between Yvonne's husband and one of his colleagues is merely a plot device to blind him to the true cause of Yvonne's distress. On the other hand, the series in no way encourages adultery or polygamy, nor does it criticise the institution of marriage. This on-the-fence approach reveals the makers' true intentions: any serious themes are mere window-dressing for a thriller whose purpose is ultimately to provide some escapism for viewers.

If this series will be remembered for anything, it will not be the generic plot, nor will it be Emily Watson's admittedly brilliant but far from unusual performance. What sticks in the mind the most (and prompted the most discussion after the first episode aired) is the depiction of rape. For this scene director Jessica Hobbs is to be commended; she strikes the perfect balance, avoiding the traps most rape scenes fall into. It is shocking without being needlessly explicit, it in no way feels romantic or erotic and it is treated as an earth-shattering event rather than a mere plot device. It feels perverse to talk about great rape scenes, but the one featured in "Apple Tree Yard" certainly falls into that category.

Overall, this series is not an instant classic, nor is it even as original as it would have you believe. However, it is still recommended for viewers looking for an thought-provoking but entertaining thriller.

P.S. On a frustrating note, we never do find out why Costley was rejected by MI5.

P.P.S LEGAL INACCURACY: It is suggested that at one point the police deliberately lied to Yvonne. In the UK, that is illegal. Furthermore, all interviews are recorded, so a policeman who did lie during an interview would be opening themselves up to facing disciplinary action.

Great acting
gallagherkellie24 August 2021
I really enjoyed this. It tugged on my heart strings at times. It had some good twists and turns. Didn't go too long with only four episodes. There was some really good acting, and nothing was far-fetched. Recommend if you're in the mood for a good drama/thriller.

Emily Watson is Reason Enough to Watch THis
levybob18 November 2023
'Apple Tree Yard' is far from perfect. But Emily Watson as the story's protagonist Yvonne is as close to perfect in that role as one could imagine. And, trust me, she alone is reason enough to watch this four episode drama. Perhaps it is her face, specifically her doleful eyes, but we care about Yvonne. We want the best for her. And we will not stop watching until the series' final moment.

Or final second. Because this film asks that you do just that. Stay with it right up to the final credits.

Yvonne is a brilliant scientist who has an affair with a British Civil Servant (Ben Chaplin). She is married to a seemingly wonderful man but the affair - sex with a stranger, sex in public spaces - is so thrilling, she cannot quit it. But soon enough she is the victim of an event that causes her to re-evaluate her life, in full. Yvonne makes choices that not each of us would make. Even so, we can understand how someone might make those decisions; they are not uncommon.

There is one major problem with the plot. And without giving anything away, that problem is this. Yvonne keeps her affair a secret. From her friends and family. That we understand. But when she keeps it a secret from those whose mission it is to help her, that, for me, was a problem. And a big one.

Ben Chaplin is appropriately creepy as her secret lover. But the film belongs to Ms. Watson. And Ms. Watson delivers.

I find myself watching and being intrigued and gripped by it.
kkmmbbtx12 January 2020
I wish one could respond to specific reviews here. Some (many) are so judgmental you'd think we were watching news reports. Yes, sometimes people are illogical and naive. Yes, sometimes people (men AND women) aren't as intelligent as they should be ... People. Soon as someone (a male) talks about intelligent women or naive women ... I just shake my head and generally try to ignore it.

But the criticisms I'm seeing are about some mythical perfect story about perfect people and apparently the reviewers know it all! I find it a good story, keeps me interested. Yes, I'm sorry people make bad choices and get themselves into very sticky, stupid situations. But again ... human. And if the human race didn't act irrationally and out of form and all the rest .. wow, lots of boring shows to watch and we'd all know the end from the beginning (as some reviewers claim they did). I'm really tired of these know-it-all reviews that are so condescending and rude. Gosh, if I enjoy it or like it or can empathize, surely something must be wrong with me. It's drama. It's not the news. We can let people make unwise choices. We can find comfort in our humanity.

Not bad but..
Headturner129 December 2019
Ok after reading some of the reviews I am compelled to write my own. I see many reviews calling her this sexual prowess with all this power? Are we watching the same woman?!? Tying so hard to keep the affair a secret. Lol. Ok. She made so many ridiculous mistakes and seemed so desperate for attention it was ridiculous. Mind blowing finale ? Were we watching the same series? Bonner was the highlight of this. Was it aweful, no but this meek woman with zero emotion was boring as heck to watch. It wasn't awful but in no way was she some sexual powerful goddess and the ending was not mind blowing. Carry on.

juxtaposition of an ordinary life and suddenly risky behavior
jmccrmck-6517212 December 2020
The main thing to know is that Emily Watson is playing the main character. It is a top notch BBC production and a script from a novel that is engaging ,dramatic , suspenseful, unpredictable and well conceived. This 4 part TV series is one of THEE best, if not the best, things I have streamed on TV in the last two years. It is not easy and rare indeed to watch a production that is flawless at every turn in the telling of the story and the acting delivered. I loved it.

Don't waste your time
babslou19 June 2017
Don't waste your time. A show like this makes a mockery of female intelligence. And the action is as slow as molasses to make matters worse. Who would believe a woman (and she's a highly educated scientist) could be so naive. The story is totally wrong implausible. However I m glad to see Emily Watson come out from all the frumpy roles I've seen her in. She looked quite attractive in Appletree Yard.

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 1: Dr. Carmichael in dock we don't know why yet. Flashback to nine months earlier: Dr Carmichael in front of Parliamentary committee explain genetics to them, OK so far. On leaving, a smarmy bloke she's never met before congratulates her and takes her on quick tour of the Palace's nether regions; they end up in a room where the suffragette Emily Davison hid out and he ends up exploring her nether regions - and this is where it all starts to fall apart, 10 minutes in (was it even that long) she's shagging some total stranger in a cupboard - erm? All downhill from here I'm afraid: public shufty here, public shufty there, no explanation other than the tosh she keeps typing on her computer - having sex with him is like being devoured by a wolf (oh for god's sake). Eponymous Apple Tree Yard shows up (one of those cool little alley ways London has so many of), quick shufty in an alcove in said alley then off to a works leaving do where the final horrific scene is her rape by her colleague. So one hour episode, mostly inexplicable sexual encounters then she's attacked - no idea what the actual story is here.

Episode 2: Dr Carmichael docilely follows her attacker through hotel lobby and gets a taxi with him - OK I really don't get this. Later she calls her smarmy (possibly spy) lover and tells him what happened. He suggests meeting some bloke in a café where she describes her attack in graphic detail - right, you go to meet a rape counsellor in a café with other people around and describe your rape as if you're talking about last night's episode of a dull as dishwater "thriller".

Anyway, I think episode 2 is as far as I'm willing to suspend my "stretched to breaking point" reality with this so called "thriller".

Excellent Acting, Weak Script
dfales-877005 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I had read the reviews before and after and concluded I agree with those that saw this as flawed. How could a brilliant scientist be trapped this way? I think Emily gave us the clue in the 4th episode when she said she had done nothing notable in years. That is certainly plausible and could indicate age was taking a toll on her ability to reason (and question.)

Having watched "Silk" recently, I was alert to the fact that the English legal system does not work the way the American system. They actually keep the accused in a glass cage which allows little interaction with their barristers? Curious to me.

I think it could have been handled nicely with 3 episodes.

Protracted and generally predictable story elevated by a strong performance
BeneCumb11 June 2018
I was referred to this miniseries via IMDB links, I had not heard of the novel of the same name and did not delve into its synopsis (usually I try to avoid creations with strong court session elements and/or affair-based troubles). The beginning was promising, particularly sequent recognition of Emily Watson´s talent, but the the events and some twists began to take the turn usually created by sensitive female authors, and the follow-up of "bad stuff" in court did not impress me much either. Sometimes it seemed that even the small number of episodes (4) was excessive, and then a thought came to me that it was Mrs. Watson only whom I focused on... Other performances, incl. Ben Chaplin´s, were just pleasant, but nothing special.

Often enough, but not this time, having in mind a British series - so 7 points from me, and I might recommend it to Mrs. Watson´s admirers only.

A tale to ensure you never embark on an affair ....ever!
DarkWench12 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
So I watched all 4 episodes back to back rather than waiting on the edge of my seat each week.

I thoroughly enjoyed this - I did feel a little bit like a voyeur in places but I think that was the point.

I really did believe he was a spook because of the way he behaved, but equally working for Crown Agents he could be anywhere in Whitehall even ordering printer paper! But (yes sad cow that I am) I went back to episode 1 and did not see him in that room anywhere!!

As for the court sequences, especially the one where the prosecution barrister is gunning for her and Yvonne whispers to herself "this is why I never reported it" I must admit I feel like cheering when the lady (and I use this term loosely) barrister actually looked stricken with guilt.

Did Mark stir the pot out of jealousy, why did he kiss and tell. Finally why did she visit him in prison???? Maybe a follow on just to make me really happy!!

Acting masterclass Emily Watson
boself12 January 2021
I can hardly find words to describe the level A acting in this show. Number one is of course Emily Watson, but the other actors are also stunning. There is no slow or dull moment and the build up towards the ending is breath taking with a jaw dropping 180 degrees spin at the end. A lot of people think the Male lead is narcissistic. He's not. Watch closely. The last minutes will tell all. Listen closely to her words to him in the last bed scene.

Good Actors bring more horsepower than necessary to the inadequate story
robbotnik200017 January 2019
The 4 part series got off to a bracing start, then sagged and continued to sag by bringing in many story elements which indicated they may impact on the plot, then ultimately did not. Detailed but overdone legal niceties considering the amount of time they sucked out of the 4 episodes. The ultimate payoff at the very end was likewise inadequate. Felt sorry for pretty much all the characters, barring one, but ultimately most sorry for myself.

Well crafted British high drama
robertemerald4 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is a brilliantly performed piece of theatre. Emily Watson is as always perfect in her role, but it is the performance of Ben Chaplin upon which this masterpiece resides. His is a flawless performance. The tension and pace are excellent. I've also seen The Affair. This is equally good with a similar theme. Just a note as a spoiler if you are thinking of buying this show... the fact that the lead is a Geneticist has absolutely nothing to do with the story. She could have been any professional in London.

If art is defined by its ability to change, however slightly, the way we see the world
johnklem12 February 2021
...then this is art, and perhaps great art. This is an extraordinary piece of work. On a superficial level, the casting and acting are pitch perfect and the snapshots of a marriage and an affair are compelling. But the greater strength here lies in the story's ability to convey the unavoidable ambiguities of real life. America has flooded the world with the cultural equivalents of Disney and Coca Cola and we all expect simple questions and simpler answers. Apple Tree Yard gives the lie to that. Watch it from beginning to end and be changed.

Deliberate and intense
rlbdoc10 June 2021
This is not your usual thriller. This is a deliberate psychological drama about how easily one can go down the wrong path. Main character falls into what is a pile of crap and doesn't know it until too late. She is homely and vulnerable. Bad things can happen to good people and one mistake could be too many. The very end is a social study in the human id.
