In 2004, Degrassi: The Next Generation aired what would become their most controversial episode with “Accidents Will Happen,” which premiered in Canada in two parts on January 26 and February 9, 2004. However, the episode would not see the light of day on Degrassi’s U.S. network, The N, for another two years. This sparked outrage among Degrassi fans and confusion among the show’s stars, who couldn’t understand why, out of every sensitive topic Degrassi had touched upon, the storyline in “Accidents Will Happen” was too much for America to handle.

“Degrassi” fans have a reason to celebrate: a three-part documentary series is in the works about the iconic Canadian teen soap.
Featuring behind-the-scenes footages and interviews, the docu-series promises to “dive into ‘Degrassi’ lore and the teenage experience with its creators, cast, crew and fans, as well as generations of filmmakers influenced by the franchise’s 40-year legacy.” It is set to be produced by family entertainment producer WildBrain (which owns the “Degrassi” franchise) with fellow Canadian production company Peacock Alley.
Originally created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood in 1979, “Degrassi” has been a touchstone for teens and young adults for over four decades, reflecting their experiences of adolescence and tackling hard-hitting storylines such as teen pregnancy, racism, AIDS and child abuse.
The show launched the careers of a number of well-known names including recording artist Drake, Raymond Ablack (“Ginny & Georgia”), Nina Dobrev (“Vampire Diaries”), Shenae Grimes (“90210”) and...

We can breathe a sigh of relief, School Spirits Fanatics.
Paramount+ finally confirmed Tuesday afternoon that it had ordered School Spirits Season 2.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
School Spirits Season 1 wrapped on the streaming service in April with several cliffhangers.
The series stars Peyton List as Maddie Nears, a teenager trying to solve her murder.
While the YA market has been saturated with series in recent years, the series excelled in every area.
It boasted a compelling mystery, plenty of drama, and lots of potential for future seasons.
"We saw how engaged the fans of the show were, and we're really excited about not only the creative direction of the show [in season one], but the promise of the creative direction we're aware of in the second season," Shauna Phelan, executive vp and co-head of Nickelodeon and Awesomeness live-action series and films, told The Hollywood Reporter.

On Wednesday, Netflix's first formal Upfronts presentation brought some exciting news for fans of the streaming service's most beloved shows.
Ginny & Georgia, which has been in limbo since January, has secured a pickup for two more seasons, keeping the show on the air through what will likely be the fourth -- and final -- season.
In an exclusive post-mortem interview in January, then-showrunner Debra J. Fisher teased that she and series creator Sarah Lampert had mapped out a four-season run for the show.
The renewal announcement's delay is shocking, especially considering the show has been a strong performer for Netflix.
However, the streaming service confirmed that Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: Next Class) will take over as showrunner from Fisher.
There is no reason for the switcheroo, but fans will be happy knowing the show is returning.
Ginny & Georgia Season 2 concluded with countless cliffhangers, including Georgia being arrested for murder.

School is difficult enough, but it's about to be more difficult for a teenager named Maddie (played by Peyton List), tasked with solving her murder.
Paramount+ dropped the official teaser for School Spirits this week, and it looks set to be one of the most talked-about shows of the year so far.
The trailer introduces us to Maddie, a teenager who finds herself dead, and her spirit is stuck at school.
Maddie has no idea how she died, but she can see the reactions from the other students in the school as she tries to comprehend how she got stuck there.
The minute she tries to step foot off the school grounds, she's taken back to the crime scene.
It's a compelling hook for a teen drama, and the official trailer makes it seem like this one is worth watching.

As many actors know, fame can mean getting recognized by fans at any point — even in situations where they’d rather not be recognized. Ginny & Georgia star Sara Waisglass experienced this once, and she took to TikTok recently to share the story. Unfortunately for Waisglass, the fan encounter happened during a “very intimate” check-up at a doctor’s office.

High school is a complicated time in a person's life. While everyone goes through physical, mental, and social changes as they begin to transition into adulthood, the high school experience isn't the same for everybody. During its presentation at the Television Critics Association’s 2023 winter press tour, Paramount+ debuted new teaser art for the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which premieres on Feb. 16. During the panel about the series however, the team behind the series didn’t seem so sure that this would be the end.
“Who knows?” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said when asked about the ending of the series, with star Patrick Stewart saying that if the show could “maintain the work quality” of the first three seasons, he would be open to reappearing. He also noted that the storylines of the final season intentionally “leave doors open.”
The series stars Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, who he played for seven seasons of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd also star.

Another week, another HBO Max cancellation at the hands of Warner Brothers Discovery. This time, it happens to be the once-popular Canadian show, Degrassi. Known for its proactive themes focusing on high school kids, Degrassi aired for over 20 years under different variations starting back in 1979: The Kids of Degrassi Street (1979-1986), Degrassi Junior High (1987-1989), Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-2015) and Degrassi: Next Class (2016-2017). The series’ popularity rose back in 2001 when it came out of the gates swinging with Emma chatting and meeting an online predator. Degrassi was never shy about veering away from controversial subjects:

As it turns out, "whatever it takes" is not enough. The famous Canadian drama series "Degrassi" has been a teen favorite for over three decades, so people were thrilled when it was announced that the series was getting a reboot at HBO Max. The streamer felt like a perfect fit, considering "Degrassi" is the grandmother of other popular shows like "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" and the teen phenomenon known as "Euphoria."
Created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood in 1979, "Degrassi" has its roots in a series of short films called "The Kids of Degrassi Street." It would be nearly a decade before the show "Degrassi Junior High" would debut on CBC, which led to the follow-up series "Degrassi High" from 1989-1991. It's the 14 seasons of "Degrassi: The Next Generation," however, that made the show a certifiable teen classic outside of Canada. Fans were devastated when the show went off...

HBO Max has opted not to move forward with a Degrassi revival series, Deadline has confirmed.
The streaming service had announced a series order for a new iteration of the popular Degrassi franchise in January with an expected release date in 2023. Filming was expected to take in place in Toronto this past summer.
A reprise of the original teen drama, Degrassi was initially described as a character-driven series about the high school experience and the thrilling, often painful journey of self-discovery. Set in Toronto, the new series was to explore a group of teenagers and school faculty living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart.
The series from WildBrain was to be helmed by showrunners/executive producers Lara Azzopardi (Backstage, The Bold Type, Mary Kills People) and Julia Cohen.

The new “Degrassi” series that had been ordered at HBO Max is no longer moving forward, Variety has confirmed.
The new entry in the Canadian high school drama franchise was originally picked up for 10 episodes at the streamer back in January. It was to be produced by franchise owner WildBrain and developed by showrunners and executive producers Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen.
The series would have been the sixth TV show in the franchise to date. The others are “The Kids of Degrassi Street,” “Degrassi Junior High” “Degrassi High,” “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” and “Degrassi: Next Class.”
This marks the latest project to get scrapped at HBO Max since the closing of the Warner Bros.- Discovery merger in April. Bad news, Panthers. HBO Max's announced revival of "Degrassi," the long-running and much-beloved Canadian teen series, is no longer happening. HBO Max confirmed to Popsugar that "Degrassi" will not debut on the service. The Wall Street Journal broke the news in a Nov. 2 report.

The reboot of Degrassi will not be moving forward at HBO Max.
A new report from Wall Street Journal on Thursday revealed that the highly anticipated reboot had been shelved.
Warner Bros. Discovery has been in cost-cutting mode since the merger earlier this year.
Many projects have been canceled entirely before broadcast, including the Batgirl movie.
The company has been restructuring in its attempts to save money, and youth programming has largely been shut out.
While it sounds like the decision to end Degrassi was made a while ago, this is the first we've heard of it.
The series was ordered back in January.
Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen are set as showrunners and executive producers of the latest offshoot.
Production was slated for the summer.

Class is back in session at your favorite school for edgy teens! Wait no, I'm not talking about "Euphoria" High — think back to the golden era of teen angst when TV seasons were 40 episodes long and high schoolers doing drugs was considered controversial. That's right, "Degrassi" is back and it's heading to HBO Max, the official home of all things chaotic-teen related. Whatever it takes, Degrassi always makes it through. It’s been announced that a new version of the beloved teen drama is headed to streamer HBO Max in 2023. The series has been off the air since 2017, after four seasons of Degrassi: Next Class on Netflix, but paraphrasing a Degrassi classic song, “everybody wants Degrassi and they’ll never give up.”
Details about the new series are scant at the moment, though we do know the show is being helmed by Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen, writers who’ve worked on such shows as The Bold Type, Riverdale, and A Million Little Things, but most importantly they previously wrote an episode Degrassi: The Next Generation. The new show is also set to launch with 10 hour-long serialized episodes, switching the long running format of half hour installments the franchise has had up to this point.

Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy is one of those beloved book franchises that should have gotten a TV series adaptation at least five years ago. Set in a world in which two distinct races of vampires—the Moroi and the Strigoi—exist, the six-book series centers the best friendship between Moroi princess Lissa and half-vampire bodyguard Rose.
While the series was made into a pretty good movie starring Zoey Deutch back in 2014, it was one of those adaptations that, while fun, didn’t actually do a good job adapting its source material. Now that Peacock has announced a series adaptation from Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec and promising “the elegance of aristocratic romance” combined with “the supernatural thrills of the vampire genre,” the Vampire Academy fanbase might finally get the adaptation they’ve long been asking for. Today, we got our first insight into what the Peacock series will actually look like,...

Since its Feb. 24 release, Netflix's new series Ginny & Georgia has faced severe criticism for making an offhand, outdated, and sexist remark at the expense of Taylor Swift's personal life. In the season finale, the titular mother-daughter duo engages in a heated argument about their respective complicated love lives. Feeling inspected and blind-sided by her mother's knowledge of her covert love affair, Ginny resorts to a deeply flawed, uncalled-for quip, sniping, "What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift?"
Naturally, Swift's fans caught wind of the jab and subsequently expressed their disapproval by getting "Respect Taylor Swift" trended on worldwide Twitter. On March 1, Taylor herself weighed in on the matter by sending out a succinct tweet, calling out Netflix for its complicity in the debacle.

This is nice. We’re like the ‘Gilmore Girls’ — but with bigger boobs.”

Utopia Falls, Hulu’s latest TV series offering, has a premise straight out of young adult fiction. Every year, New Babyl hosts “The Exemplar,” which sees twenty-four teenagers participate in a musical competition to win the title, and make history. It’s Divergent meets Step Up and how you feel about either or both of those franchises is probably a good barometer for how you will feel about Utopia Falls.
Coming from showrunner Joseph Mallozzi and created by Canadian director R.T. Thorne, Utopia Falls seems like it should garner higher expectations than its weird premise would suggest. Write what you know, they say. But because Fred Durst once had a bad experience with a stalker, we now get the rank human patty that is the Limp Bizkit frontman and sometime director’s latest indulgence “The Fanatic,” a celebrity-terrorizing scenario that wants to be “Misery” but only creates misery.
Durst didn’t necessarily embarrass himself 10 years ago when he released his directorial debut, the admirably sensitive college drama “The Education of Charlie Banks”; he didn’t write the film, nor did his effort suggest hidden reserves of cinematic promise. “The Fanatic,” however, which Durst did have a hand in writing, is a brainless, exploitative folly which gives John Travolta free rein to mine the history of cringe-worthy autism portrayals for an offensively garish Frankenstein pantomime of unhinged obsession. It ultimately suggests this side-career of Durst’s should be well and truly snuffed out.
