This episode, shown in the UK as part of 'Inspector Borowski' opens with Rainald Klapproth, a taxi driver's, inner monologue as he thinks about the people he transports. He then phones his ex-girlfriend on her birthday; it is clear the call isn't welcome. She informs him that she is getting married the next day. We then see Borowski attending a police conference which he clearly finds boring; afterwards he and fellow officers Charlotte Lindholm and Sören Affeld find themselves in Rainald's taxi. Affeld pesters him to put on his seat belt and he snaps... he quickly kills Affeld and restrains Borowski and Lindholm. It is clear that they are in for a long night as they try to develop a rapport with Rainald and learn more about him.
If you are hoping for an episode where the police investigate a crime to discover who did it you will obviously be disappointed but if you want a very tense episode you should love it. The confined space of the taxi provides an impressively claustrophobic setting. The tension is always there but there are moments when it increases dramatically as one or other of the police officers tries to extricate themselves from the situation. While there isn't too much actual violence there is a constant feeling violence might occur. This means at times the episode feels more like a horror film than a police procedural. There is even an allusion to 'Little Red Riding Hood' with Charlotte's choice of jacket and the sighting of wolves. As the episode progresses, and we learn more about Rainald's past, his character becomes more sympathetic. I liked how the story was divided into chapters giving insights into what characters are thinking. The cast is on fine form; most notable Axel Milberg, Maria Furtwängler and Florian Bartholomäi as Borowski, Lindholm and Rainald; the three people in the taxi. Overall a really taut episode that fans of the series should enjoy.
