To be nominated in both Leading and Supporting categories at the same Oscar ceremony is a rare feat some actors have been lucky enough to achieve. Most often, though, AMPAS will pick a role to celebrate and only bless the performer with one nomination. Actors that came close to the elusive double nomination include people like Meryl Streep in 2002, Al Pacino in 1990, Jane Fonda in 1978, and today's Almost There case study, Oskar Werner in 1965.
This Austrian performer, famous for films like Truffaut's Jules and Jim, was nominated in the Best Actor category for his work in Ship of Fools. That same year, he was probably close to a Supporting Actor nod for The Spy Who Came in from the Cold…...

Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, looked amazing when they attended the Oscars in La on Sunday night. The longtime couple, who will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in August, posed for photos on the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre. Sting took the stage during the show to perform his nominated song, "The Empty Chair," from Jim: The James Foley Story. While he didn't take home a coveted golden statue, his night was already pretty amazing thanks to his stunning date.

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.
I have not noted a “should win” for the feature documentary category,...

The stars were definitely shining for La La Land at the 2017 Oscars! During Sunday's award show, La La Land's song "City of Stars" won for Best Song. “City of Stars” from “La La Land” has won the Oscar for Best Original Song. The music for the song is by Justin Hurwitz, who moments before had won the Academy Award for Best Score. The lyrics were written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

“I was educated in public schools where arts and culture were valued, recognized and resourced,” said song writer Justin Paul in accepting the award.

Four-time Oscar nominee Sting performed his original song "The Empty Chair" from the documentary Jim: The James Foley Story at the 89th Academy Awards on Sunday.
Alone onstage with an acoustic guitar, Sting gave an emotional performance of his song while sitting atop a stool under spotlight.
At the end of his performance, a screen behind Sting showed an image of journalist James Foley, who was killed by Isis terrorists in 2014, along with his quote, "If I don't have the moral courage to challenge authority, we don't have journalism."

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

And so the awards season hullabaloo came to a close for 2017 with the 89th Annual Academy Awards took place this Sunday, February 26th, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The battle lines are drawn: It's La La Land, a musical fantasy about white lovers in Hollywood, versus Moonlight, a searing drama about black youth surviving on the streets of Miami. That contest is symptomatic of how serious Oscar is – or isn't – about diversity. After two years in which not a single black actor showed up among the acting nominees, this year's crop includes seven actors of color: Mahershala Ali, Viola Davis, Naomie Harris, Ruth Negga, Dev Patel, Octavia Spencer and Denzel Washington.

The Best Song performances at the Oscars have always been a mixed bag. Sometimes you get Bruce Springsteen belting out “Streets Of Philadelphia,” and sometimes you get an excuse to get up and freshen your drink. This year, though, the Academy has put together a pretty banging slate of performers for its big night, announcing today that Lin-Manuel Miranda, Justin Timberlake, Sting, and John Legend will all be taking the stage at this year’s show.
Miranda, Timberlake, and Sting are all nominated this year, with the Hamilton composer teaming up with Moana star Auli’i Cravalho for that movie’s “How Far I’ll Go.” Sting, meanwhile, will be playing his and J. Ralph’s “The Empty Chair,” from the documentary Jim: The James Foley Story. And Timberlake will be trotting out his irritatingly infectious “Can’t Stop The Feeling,” from last year’s sugar-coated kids comedy Trolls.

I know that in a world with too much useless digital information and a political climate that seems ready to implode or explode (depending on your political leanings), perhaps we all need the escapism.
And what about the host? Jimmy Kimmel is way too vanilla. Given my political mood, please give me the caustic wit of Ricky Gervais, please!!! Only he can breathe some real life into to this turgid affair. The grandstanding, the political rants, well-meaning for real, but this is a night for pure escapism for the audience, n'cest pas? I mean, does anyone really care unless they really are talking odds?

Um, surprise? Fastest Oscar nominations ever?
After the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences blew through this year's nominees in record time, we wouldn't fault you if you needed a second to recover from whiplash and get a quick refresher on who actually did get nominated. Do that here. And despite everything being mostly as predicted, there are certainly a few snubs and some big surprises. Let's get into 'em.

Snub: Deadpool. Though perhaps not all that surprising, it turns out Ryan Reynold's little superhero that could ultimately couldn't get any love from the Academy -- despite a strong showing throughout awards season. Reynolds himself was always a long shot and forget a Best Picture nod, but not even Visual Effects?! Makeup & Hairstyling?! C'mon! Even Suicide Squad got one of those!

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

When the Oscars announced the 2017 nominations on Tuesday, La La Land garnered 14 nominations, matching the record held by James Cameron's 1990s juggernaut Titanic. Two of those 14 went to Justin Hurwitz's music in the Best Original Song category. But Hurwitz will be competing with heavy hitters, with the other nominees either voiced or written by proven pop stars: Alessia Cara, who recorded a Lin-Manuel Miranda composition, "How Far I'll Go," for Moana; Sting, who co-wrote "The Empty Chair" with J. Ralph for Jim: The James Foley Story; and Justin Timberlake,...

The best song category has become a vital platform for addressing social and political issues and this season it has intensified. Damien Chazelle’s frontrunner musical “La La Land” boasts two songs about the cost of love and ambition (“City of Stars,” and “Audition”); Justin Timberlake’s happiness anthem from DreamWorks’ animated “Trolls” (“Can’t Stop the Feeling!”) became last year’s best-selling single; J. Ralph and Sting collaborated on “Empty Chair” from the HBO doc about the eponymous slain photojournalist and social activist (“Jim: The James Foley Story”); and Tori Amos offered “Flicker” from the Netflix doc, “Audrie & Daisy,” about teen sexual assault and cyberbullying.

Oscar Song Contenders Sting, J. Ralph Capture Heartbreak and Heroism in ‘Jim: The James Foley Story’
This story about J. Ralph and Sting first appeared in the Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine. Composers J. Ralph and Sting collaborated on the meditative “The Empty Chair,” capturing the heartbreak and heroism in the documentary “Jim: The James Foley Story.” Journalist Foley was killed by Isis in 2014, his beheading horrifically recorded in a video the extremist group shared on social media. What did you know about James Foley? Sting I knew what happened to him but had never seen the footage nor would I ever want to. I watched the film, and it was devastating emotionally.

Already halfway to an Egot, Justin Timberlake is looking to make a splash at the Oscars this year. The 35-year-old singer’s latest chart-topper, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from Trolls, is a contender in the best original song category — up against some pretty big threats — in addition to seeing great commercial success. In fact, it could be the latest in a recent string of songs to end up on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts as well as snagging some attention from the Academy.
Timberlake, who served as executive music producer for DreamWorks Animation’s latest entry in addition to starring in it, co-wrote and co-produced the jam alongside Max Martin and Karl Johan Schuster (aka Shellback). “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” — which was released on May 6, a full six months before Trolls was released on November 4 — became Timberlake’s fifth No.

The Academy documentary branch’s shortlist of 15 represents a diverse range of films from all over the world, representing strong political views as well as high artistry. However, this year also stands as the first HBO shutout in recent memory — perhaps because they didn’t campaign assertively.
Rivals PBS landed five, Independent Lens and Showtime three, Netflix two, and American Experience Films, Pov, A&E, Amazon Studios, and Espn each have one. Theatrical distributors Kino Lorber and Magnolia had two, with Sundance Selects, Sony Pictures Classics, Open Road, Janus Films, Film Rise, The Film Collaborative and The Orchard one.
But which will make the final five? Those screeners will eventually be sent to the entire Academy — who have more mainstream taste than this group of professional documentarians. For now, this more demanding group will winnow down the list.

The recipient of 16 Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, and three Academy Award nominations, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Sting may well add to his tally soon. Teaming with Oscar-nominated composer J.
