Chicanery
rpcrmcbride25 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Almost pure chicanery from start to finish. Katie Couric and crew do their best to further Bloomberg's anti-liberty agenda. Half truths, deliberate omissions, and shady editing are the hallmark of this "Documentary" The most glaring example of shady editing is found during the dialog and footage with the members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. The cutting room floor must be littered with knowledge that the people behind this film desperately does not want their base to know about. If you are wanting to watch a hundred and ten minute assault on liberty and the Bill of Rights you need not look any longer because you found it. I recommend reading the Federalist Paper number forty six before you watch this to give you something else to consider.

While I often disagreed with the film's assertions or omissions, it sure did have a lot of good points to make as well.

"Under the Gun" is a documentary about increased gun control and I know this is a huge issue here in the United States. I also think it's important to you that you understand that I am a gun owner. I own several guns and have had training on how to use them safely. My guns are always under lock and key when I am not using them and I am not simply a 'gun nut'. So, at the outset I have a certain bias against a film promoting some of the things that "Under the Gun" promotes--though everyone seeing the film has some sort of bias...that is natural. I also think the documentary occasionally misses the mark. Yet, still, despite its flaws, the film is very well made, makes some excellent points and is the sort of documentary that you need to watch with some Kleenex handy, as it's very effective--especially when you hear the heartbreaking stories of the victims of gun violence.

"Under the Gun" is not necessarily in favor of the confiscation of guns or preventing people from legally purchasing guns--this is very important to point out at the onset. This is important because if that was the thrust of the film, I would not be recommending you see it--especially since confiscating the hundreds of millions of guns in this country is logistically impossible. Instead, it talks about a few problems which are apparently in the way of a more rational American gun policy. Often I find myself agreeing with the film wholeheartedly. After all, if background checks make mistakes and the wrong sort of people get guns, then that is a problem we need to remedy. Likewise, I can understand their dislike of the NRA...heck, even a lot of gun owners don't agree with many of the organization's positions. It makes all these points very well. What it doesn't do, however, is always hit the bulls-eye, so to speak. At one point, the film seems to champion suing gun manufacturers instead of focusing on the folks committing the crime...much like folks who want to sue tobacco companies or fast food companies for their health problems. I believe in individual choice...so this part of the film really bothered me. Likewise, it really, really bothered me when the film is pushing for full background checks (something most Americans endorse, by the way) but never once mentions that folks who are convicted criminals, dangerously mentally ill or spousal abusers are almost never prosecuted when they do these background checks now. According to Politifact, only about 44 prosecutions resulted from over 80,000 of these illegal attempts to purchase guns...and not mentioning this in the film seems like a very curious omission. I don't understand why this was never mentioned....and Politifact is hardly a right-wing organization.

Despite my many misgivings, I cannot discount the film as it makes some excellent points while simultaneously pulling at the viewers' emotions. The documentary is very well made and you cannot discount much of what it's trying to say. But blaming mostly the NRA, gun manufacturers and gun store owners alone just seems rather simplistic. However, whether I agree with a film 100% of the time is not the same as to whether or not it's a good film or one worth seeing. This one is generally well made and makes some very convincing points...and shouldn't be ignored. We need to talk openly and honestly about gun violence...not just in the States but throughout the world. I would just like to see a film about gun violence that offers a bit more balance and a more comprehensive list of solutions.

fed up with gun violence
ferguson-611 May 2016
Greetings again from the darkness. Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and journalist Katie Couric, who brought us the 2014 documentary "Fed Up" about childhood obesity, re-team to deliver a "20/20" type presentation billed as a "balanced look at the gun debate". It's a polarizing topic and we hear from the families of victims, experts in the field, and gun rights advocates. Supplemented by some startling statistics, it seems incomprehensible that some common ground has yet to be found.

The opening credits play over a video timeline of gun law highlights and news clips of shooting events such as Martin Luther King, Jr, Bobby Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. It then hits us with the first mind-numbing stat … during the run time of the film, 22 people will be shot in America, and 6 will die. It's at this point where we realize the "balanced" approach is really not likely since it's an emotional debate as much as (or more) than an intellectual one. It's the stricter gun law faction vs. Second amendment purists.

There is simply no comparison to the personal stories of parents who have had a child killed at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut or at the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Regardless of where you stand on gun rights, these stories are heart-breaking and devastating. There is also a segment with Gabby Giffords, who is still recovering from her 2011 gunshot wounds, and along with her husband astronaut Mark Kelly, has joined the fight for gun control laws. ( sidenote: It did seem odd that Kelly's rip of the Cub Scouts made the final cut).

Much of the film is spent on the issues of background checks and the infamous Gun Show loophole. It's here that we begin to understand the strength of the NRA. Founded in 1871, the NRA was originally designed to fine-tune the "aim" of those wishing to shoot firearms. It is now a political powerhouse and one of the most pervasive lobbyists in Washington, DC. The film is quite fair in distinguishing between the NRA senior executives, and the rank-and-file members who are fed a steady dose of propaganda that borders on fear-mongering. Though most NRA members stand in favor of background checks to prevent felons, terrorists, and the underage from obtaining fire arms, the NRA continues to preach that 'they are going to take away your guns' and that 'it takes a good guy with a gun to defeat a bad guy with a gun'.

It doesn't seem that the filmmakers set out to change anyone's mind on the topic, but rather to highlight the importance of some type of compromise or common ground in light of the 32,000 people who die in America from gunshots each year. And seriously, does it make sense that there are more gun stores in the U.S. than McDonalds and Starbucks combined? The most honest and direct moment of the film comes when one of the parents of a victim states, "we don't want your sorry's or prayers … we want your action."

False Advertising

Leaving the politics out of it, the makers of this are claiming to present a balanced view. It is typical of American rhetoric and the creation of propaganda disguised as fact. Emotional response (and I do empathize with many of the traumatized people that helped create this "documentary") is the most frequently used tool in this film to present opinion, and any facts are only skewed to represent one side of the discussion.

One-sided political rhetoric, which persistently portrays opposition as ignorant, is one of the reasons there is a powerful ultra-right movement. Strong enough perhaps to take control of all our government.

The film does not give equal time, nor give credence, to any opposing viewpoint. It portrays all gun owners as a shill for a political lobby and demonizes, yes, you guessed it, commerce.

If you are an anti-gun activist, you will walk away from this statement feeling warm and fuzzy. If you believe in gun ownership, you may sprain an ankle getting to the phone to call the NRA membership line.

There was no balance, very little fact, no intelligent debate. This will only polarize two already polarized groups. It would have been interesting to see balanced. This wasn't interesting.

A Disturbing Indictment of American Society
ChuckM61215 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I suppose those who love their guns to the detriment of all other concerns will have quickly given this movie a one-star rating while those who who view our fascination with guns as a sickness to our collective soul will give it ten.

I don't know if this counts as a spoiler or not, but the movie is at its best when it portrays the deep grief of those who have lost someone they loved to gun violence in contrast to the rabble-rousing from the NRA as it stokes the furnace of fear it uses to keep its power. In the end, that's where we arrive--at a nation in emotional turmoil between those of us who grieve and those of us who fear. It doesn't speak well of us that its fear that appears to be winning.

It's been almost seventeen hours since I saw the film Still disturbing is the surveillance footage from the cameras in the lobby at the theater in Aurora, Colorado. Though out of sight, one hears the popping of gunfire from one of the auditoriums. To understand the result of the noise is to grieve for both the immediate victims there and all of those that will follow as we remain a nation ensnared in the grip of madness.

It would be nice to know what future generations will think when they see this movie. Let's hope they've achieved an intelligence and enlightenment that allows them to view us with the scorn we deserve. What a terrible legacy we leave them.

At the start of this review I wrote that it's assumed that those who love their guns would give the movie a one-star rating while those who saw it as a film revealing a sickness in our collective soul would give it ten stars. I belong with the latter.

Hi. I've actually seen the entire film.
Crisis89200012 June 2016
"Oh my God! They added a pause! This film is bogus!" writes anyone who hasn't actually seen the entire film.

The truth is, this is an incredibly well-made, informative, and at times highly infuriating look at America's gun laws. The film makes clear in no uncertain terms that it is NOT advocating for banning guns are taking away guns in America. In fact, it makes clear up front that the Supreme Court has expressly forbid such actions.

What it does focus on is how America got to its current state of leading the developed world in mass shooting and other forms of gun violence. What is also focuses on very well are the victim's stories and the history of the NRA.

The controversy surrounding the "misleading edit" is so overblown. It's such an insignificant part of the doc, and really it's being used as a distraction to defer from the real damning statistics, laws, and policies the NRA has pushed to implement over the years.

I really encourage all of the one-star reviewers to hold their tongues until they've seen the entire doc. See if you feel as outraged over an added pause after you see how the ATF still needs to use a paper-based filing system for gun reports because of laws enacted by the NRA (if that doesn't sound like a big deal, wait until you hear them talk about how they need to take safety precautions to make sure their floor doesn't collapse from the weight of all of the file boxes).

P.S. Anyone familiar with how documentaries are made should know that docs are not journalism. They are opinion pieces. I personally think the pause is unfortunate because it is all anyone is talking about. But the rest of the doc is filled with statistics that make a compelling case for reforming America's gun laws.

An edited lie
blacksacrednight25 May 2016
At 21:48 Couric is made to appear as if she has stumped the Virginia Citizens Defense League by asking the question, "If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?" Subsequent to this question, the camera pans from VCDF member to member and all appear to be mesmerized by this question. Problem is, the editor of the film removed their verbose answers to this question, and inserted film of them patiently waiting to be asked a question.

If this is an example of what Couric considers journalistic integrity, then she will always be remembered as a hack propagandist rather than a serious investigative reporter.

100% Fresh on the Tomatometer per every Rotten Tomato Critic
michelle-920-72244027 June 2016
After this month's horrific murder in Orlando, and after marching Sunday with Moms Demand Action at the SF Pride Parade, and after calling politicians during the government sit-in last week, I knew I had to learn more about the stranglehold the NRA has placed on our government… I just got off the couch from watching Katie Couric's newly released documentary (free on EPIX which Comcast doesn't offer… I streamed for $0.99 on Amazon). I took a huge number of notes on all the atrocities I learned, which I know I'll need as ammunition for future gun battles ahead. (PUBLIC DISCLAIMER; I don't believe in taking anyone's guns away. I think that it should be harder to shoot a gun than to drive a car… and believe in closing the terrorist watch list loophole.) I learned a ton with this less-than-2 hour documentary, and strongly recommend it to the members of Moms Demand Action/Everytown Against Gun Violence/the Brady Campaign and others interested in reducing gun violence – or learning why America is having such a hard time doing so. Yes I know there was one edit made unfairly for "the other side"... bottom line, this shares a lot of truths about why America can't change gun laws. If moms can lobby the automobile industry for safer cars and car seats - and win - then moms can do so with the NRA for gun safety and less gun violence. #Enough #DisarmHate

Who do I sue to get my wasted time back!
wolfspirit-7613816 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I am not joking. There is nothing about this piece of propaganda that can be even remotely called a "balanced view".

How did it even rate as a documentary? It is filled with falsified and or misleading "facts and figures" that push the anti-gun agenda, while hiding other things like the amount of times guns have saved lives. This piece of garbage also fails to mention that 80% of deaths attributed to firearms are from gang violence using illegally obtained guns.

This entire so called documentary is nothing more than a Lie by omission. So if you haven't seen it don't bother.

Enough with the NRA and it's obstruction
a_ovalle12 June 2016
As a mother and non gun owner it is increasingly maddening to watch shooting after shooting and NOTHING happen. I was thankful for the insight the movie showed on why there is no national digital registry and background history of NRA involvement / lobby on behalf of their clients, aka gun MANUFACTURERS. Seriously- some simple regulations here will do wonders folks, and no one wants to take away your guns, we just want to make it harder for those with a history of violence or mental health to NOT. Had really hoped that after Sandy Hook we would come together as a nation and say enough. I'm writing this after the largest mass murder at a dance club has taken place, and really hope others get a chance to see this film and make changes locally- like Washington state did. Because big government is strangled by the NRA. Shame on them for lying to their members and spreading false truths about the government repealing the second amendment. As if!

Total skewed and Biased
erozpl27 May 2016
I saw the "scandal" of curouic "doctoring" the video to make the pro- gun people appear dumb founded. I had to watch it myself. This who documentary lacks a single shred of journalistic integrity. It is absolutely biased and un-apologetically dishonest. Don't waste your time watching a video of lies. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME

She has since "apologized"but its not the first time she has been busted for writing sensational articles that are far from true. This lacks any scientific method to it. She set out to prove her hypothesis so she did anything to make her position seem right. If you respect your time, go out to a gun range and shoot a gun. Nothing will shut down her anti gun rhetoric but fighting back

Absolutely brilliant
lucy_whitehill4 May 2016
A must see. This will make you re-think your ideals whatever side of this argument you're on.

One of the most haunting stories was when a child was asked what they wanted to be when they were older, they replied ALIVE.

Brilliantly directed, informative content, and the portrayal of the bravery and determination of the parents of those children who have died due to gun violence is absolutely heart wrenching.

It delves into the history of gun violence and legislation, makes obvious the irony that even the Presidents (those who should be able to make and break legislation) aren't safe from such violence; if they aren't can we be? It lays out the unbelievable lobbying power of the NRA, and makes a powerful statement that it is completely legal for a terrorist suspect to buy as much ammunition and as many guns as they can get their hands on. Terrorism itself and being a terror suspect is something entirely else, but it was interesting to show that NRA members did not know this and were shocked and appalled that it could happen. The film displays clearly the ideological distance the NRA have made between themselves and their members; only 5% of their membership believe that there should be no background checks, yet the NRA preach that any form of gun control is akin to a life of confiscation. Again, confiscation being something not actually possible under supreme court rulings, but something the NRA actively preach.

The dichotomy of the gun argument is fully broken down.

If you see only one documentary this entire year, make sure it is this.

Awesome movie -- informative, dramatic and important
surfnburn17 May 2016
I wanted to see this film because of the evidence I see on the news showing American culture imploding from this product (guns). This movie answers the mystery of why we don't treat gun violence like we do other health hazards. The politics of the gun industry is outlined and presented dramatically. Its message is effective and informative. I think it will be one of the most important documentaries showing the failings of the American political system in addressing a gun violence problem that has killed and traumatized many Americans. Most of the arguments for gun rights is based on a false narrative of the 2nd Amendment presented by the NRA. This is the basis of resistance for gun law change, and in my opinion the movie doesn't address this enough. Most of the arguments against this movie will be from people who buy into the NRA's view of gun ownership. Most guns are bought for sport purposes, not mentioned in the bill of rights. The second most common use of guns in this country is for suicide again, not in the bill of rights. Collecting guns for enjoyment, again is not in the bill of rights. Getting off on the power and look of a gun is not in the bill of rights! The small percentage of guns used for defense, nothing compared to the way guns are really used in this country. And the gun industry is profiting greatly from non 2nd Amendment purposes. I hope this is the beginning of more information desperately needed to make our country safer for our children.

A prime example of media bias
kube-8198429 May 2016
Couric is another pathetic example of the Dan Rather School of Journalism.

Legislation cannot control the actions of either the mentally unbalanced and those evil souls bent on destruction.

If the producers were truly concerned about the safety of children in our society they should focus on the thousands of children killed each year by pediatric malpractice.

Another area needing concern is the sexual abuse rampant within the public school system. The Los Angeles school district has recently paid out more the 300 million dollars in settlements.

Wake up America
pensacolacomputer6 April 2020
As I'm writing this review, I am wiping the tears from my eyes. How can anyone not feel for these families? How can people here be so cruel in their reviews?

The NRA is one of the reasons why I will NEVER be a Republican, although all my family is...I am an Independent. They used to be for gun safety...Now, look how far they have fallen...Nothing more than lobbyist..

I think one day years and years from now, people will look back and say, Why was America so stupid to allow gun show loopholes and criminals to buy guns? A terrorist cannot board a plane, but can walk into a store right now and buy loads of guns and loads of ammo...What? ...Yeah...Sad but true

Horrible.
kdye-0625829 May 2016
This documentary is just rife with untruths. Its basically a Hitler style propaganda film. Just the fact that this would be considered a film is a disgrace. And its not just because its so anti gun, Michael Moore's "bowling for Columbine" shows both sides of the issue, and although I didn't agree, it was well made and had interesting cinematography as well as the music score. I can entertain the political directions, I can also suspend disbelief for different movies, but when its just lies, for her own gain, I have an issue with it. Please don't waste your time. Hopefully she will be fired and cease to make documentaries in the future.

This Katie Couric nonsense is horrible, just horrible.

Couric should be banned from using the title "Journalist" in her job description
baggss-8364128 May 2016
Nothing but an Anti-2A hit piece intended to leave the audience with a negative stereotype towards firearms and those who own them. Couric should be ashamed of the poor editing job, lack of credible reporting for the pro-2A/gun side and how the overall skew of the show leave the audience with only one conclusion to draw. Worse then "An Inconvenient Truth" for the sheer amount of blatantly false and patently twisted information fed to the audience, the producers, directors, editors and everyone involved with this project clearly had a predetermined conclusion they desired the audience to walk away with.

View with caution and skepticism if you choose to watch this drivel.

Proved to be deceptive reporting.
coreyjflynn29 May 2016
Anyone who watches this joke of a documentary and believes it is a nut job.

It has already been proved that it contains deceptive reporting.

How it is even listed at 5 stars leaves me in wonders.

Just google the video and you will see a line of news agencies on both sides of the isle reporting about how bad this is.

Honestly I'd never trust Katie Couric or any of the companies sponsoring this video again.

its a real shame that they have to spin propaganda like this to try to get people on their sides.

Just remember that what they are doing here is attempting to take away your rights and access to protection that you may or may not need one day... but lots of people day after day use do use guns for protection. They are the great equalizer. An 80yo woman unarmed is an easy target... but with a gun and proper training, she's your equal.

In 2023
charris-4729123 September 2023
So I am watching this 7 years after the release, a lot of the statistics don't really sit with todays facts. They go on a shallow trip down memory lane with families of victims of gun crime. It is a one sided conversation that doesn't have any counter arguments from the other side. It is a anti gun puff piece that is supposed to tug at your heart strings and forget all logic. They specifically say that the laws they want to pass wont or wouldn't have done anything to prevent the mass shootings their loved ones were victims of, but we should vote for them anyways. Since 594 in Washington state has passed gun deaths have only gone up. They call mental illness a "scapegoat" and with fancy editing try to make people on the other side dumber then they look. If you want a heartfelt intrusion into the short lives of two victims of Aurora, and Sandy Hook then give this a go. It is sad, and it would be sad to have to bury a child. But if you want to be serious about gun crime, then going after the manufactures, and non violent citizens is not the way to do it. Stop creating soft targets, and protect our children better than we do our corrupt politicians. The politicians will never get to the root problem with gun violence because if they really fixed problems we eventually wouldn't need them. Debatable if we even do now.
