Metapocalypse
ThomasDrufke17 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Of course the very episode that Barry gains confidence and doesn't spend it sulking in his own sorrows and lack of confidence, his father gets killed. I think everyone saw his death coming, especially with him making all the "I'm here to stay" claims and even gaining a love interest this episode…? But even though it was expected, it didn't stop the moment from being emotionally impactful.

We began the episode with Zoom's meta-humans taking over Central City in a full on 'Metapocalypse'. The way the shots were structured and choreographed felt very much like a Legends of Tomorrow episode, but it wrapped up a lot sooner than I expected. Besides having the after credits sequence from last week showing Zoom's army, there weren't any hints that this city wide take over was coming. So to see it come and go within one episode was a bit strange, but it opens the door for a one on one match next week with only Zoom and Flash.

Tonight also saw the first appearance of Black Siren AKA Earth 2 Laurel Lance, played by Katie Cassidy herself. It was weird seeing her just a few weeks after her death on Arrow, but her presence gave Cisco and Caitlin some fun material to work with, even if there didn't seem a need to have Lance appear at all. Nonetheless, how cool was it to see the actual meta-human version of the Canary Cry/scream?

Wally decided to take it upon himself to help Barry with the meta- humans as he drove around the city looking for trouble. His confidence mirrored Barry's, but it also seemed like an exact replica of Roy Harper's arc in late season 1 and early season 2 of Arrow. His speech about using the chance Flash gave him felt all too similar to what Roy pledged to do as well.

With everyone busy trying to sweep the city up, Cisco had vibes of Birds dying throughout the night. For a while I just assumed this was in reference to the Canary's presence, but apparently it was his vision of the future of Star City Earth 2 as Zoom takes his anger out. This seemingly confirms everyone's suspicions that Harry and Jesse will indeed be staying in Earth 1 for next season. It also sets up a rather epic finale next week.

I'm sure it won't be last we see of John Wesley Shipp as it's almost guaranteed the man in the iron mask is Shipp in some form, but It was devastating to see Barry lose another parent in the same place he lost his mother. Just as he finally made peace with his mother's death last week, he loses his father. If this doesn't break him, I don't know what will. And let's face it, we all knew the episode couldn't end on that happy of a note right? Before the death, the ending was just about as CW-like as you can get. Overall, 'Invincible' was a very nice way to set up the finale next week and keeps the Flash on the solid path it has been on.

+Fast-paced

"You're not invincible"
SpoodermanDerp18 May 2016
"Invincible" comes out right after the emotional ride of "Runaway Dinosaur", at the start it seemed like it felt like a huge scale episode, it ended up exploring on Barry's character even after he already went to the speed force development plot line. The episode is also quite fast paced as the finale now nears its premiere and all the drama and action are now escalating.

In the episode, Barry starts out feeling over confident after his speed force experience. It felt like it was quite relevant given the circumstances the episode presented, but then again it felt kind of useless considering Barry was already given so much closure and development in the last episode already. It was nice that it was shown that Barry was now a completely different guy after the speed force, but it wasn't really fleshed out how him being more optimistic and encouraging was a sign that he was losing fear and the episode tried so hard to explain that fear was a good thing. In the end, and most especially in the end, we finally got the pay-off and consequences to Barry's actions and it was quite heartbreaking. Wally also has a subplot once again about wanting to help in the Metapocalypse and of course a set up for next episode as it is the season finale. The seemed average at best and does well at setting it all up. However the revelations done in the episode with missed opportunities. For example, there wasn't a real shocker to Zoom after finding out that Barry and The Flash is now back, the "Metapocalypse" didn't really seem all that large scale except at the beginning of the episode and Black Siren was just there for the sake of being there. The CGI and action however was for slow-mo type scenes and sadly, it just made one scene in particular look a whole lot artificial and seemed like a video game. Nonetheless, it's the ending which most people are talking about in this episode and it's quite well deserved. The way it was handled was quite unexpected just as you thought they wound end at a certain point, it goes on and further erupts. It was devastating, all the more considering last episode's story line and it probably is the push Barry needs for the season finale.

Verdict: 8.5/10

Flash - S02E22 Invincible

Warning: Spoilers
I'll be honest, I was worried for this episode. After 2 massive home runs for me in the last 2 weeks, I was scared that this week would simply not be able to top it. Good thing I had nothing to be scared about.

This episode started fantastically. The Metapocalypse was great. While it was a bit short lived, it was enough to see the destruction they are having on the city. This really set up the rest of the episode of what we were dealing with.

The second part of the episode that they really nailed was Team Flash having to deal with Barry and his high level of optimism. I thought that this lead to a terrific moment with Barry and his dad. Following up from a fantastic moment with Barry and his mother last week, I think they did an amazing job giving a moment just as emotional to Barry and his dad. I thought this was contrasted extremely well with the moment Wally and Joe had at the start of the episode. As a character, Wally didn't hit the ground greatly and it took a while for him to become likable to the audience. But over the last few weeks he has really

The thing that really hyped this episode for many viewers was the appearance for Earth 2 Laurel. Of course with her being dead in Earth 1, I was actually looking forward to her playing a villainous role. We already saw Caitlin take on a similar role earlier in the season so it was something to really look forward to. I thought from the first sight we saw of her was fantastic. While it was brief, just the tone that she delivered her line really showed us from the get go that this isn't the Laurel we have grown to know. Her line delivery was really kept up throughout the episode and I thought it was a really good way of reminding us that this is not Black Canary but the Black Siren. This lead to one of my favourite scenes of the whole episode with Cisco and Caitlin impersonating Killer Frost and Reverb. It was really entertaining to see them try and play the villain. Which was a great contrast between then impersonating villains in comparison to seeing villain Laurel.

I really loved everything they had with Zoom and Caitlin. Even though it was just her mind playing tricks on her, it really represented how scary Zoom is as a villain. We always had an idea of how he should be feared but Caitlin telling Cisco how she no longer feels whole really represents how villainous Zoom is.

Zoom again was fantastic. Teddy Sears is going to have boxes upon boxes of casting options. While he doesn't play Zoom himself, everything he does with Hunter Zolomon is fantastic. For a character we have only recently learned about, the writers and Sears has done a fantastic job in establishing him as the fearful character that in himself is just as feared as he is in the suit. I know while it is a bit of a cheat because they are essentially the same person, you can tell there is different types of fear that is portrayed by Zoom in the suit and Zoom as Hunter Zolomon.

The ending I thought was fantastic. While man people including me thought that Henry Allen was going to die, it was the way it came about that really surprised me. The fact that Zoom didn't kill Henry to simply hurt Barry or out of vengeance, it was to prove a point. I feel like the past few weeks Zoom's main focus is to show Barry that they are in fact alike. I really like how they have gone the sort of Batman Joker One bad day away approach to Zoom as a villain.

Yet again, other fantastic episode. It really sets up massively for the finale next week and I'm pumped more than ever. I hope they really address Wally next episode in some way now that he knows Barry is the Flash. It didn't quite reach the heights of the past 2 weeks however it wasn't far from it.

Invincible…surprised me with its character moments
imakk200117 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
From the promo and trailer, I was afraid this would be the worst case ever of Barry messing up. But it wasn't. Instead we got:

Captain Singh - he made an appearance! Twice! And since he knows Joe knows more than he's telling, he should figure out Allen is Flash a la...

Dr. McGee – Exactly, she's NOT stupid! Love her nonchalantly letting Barry know she knows. I want her to be the senior science person next season. Harry can go home, thanks. Also, love the VFX of Flash saving McGee.

Wally/Joe – Pre-heroWally in his embryonic stage. Weird, the room got really dusty during that scene.

Barry's plan – oddly, he had a point. And he actually had an idea to get them started. And it actually led to a solution. How often does that happen?!

Joe/Flash talking to Wally – he forgot what happened the last time he had Flash talk to his kid. Wally is his kid like Iris, and like Iris he's going to do what he wants. Joe can be amazingly thick-headed sometimes.

StarLabs Prison - open for business again. Wonder how long before a prison break...

Iris – can she be any less enthusiastic about Barry's proposal to start a relationship.

Henry – he should have stayed in his cabin in the woods!!! Also, proof the Allen family is accursed. ACCURSED, I say! Yes, Henry's death was telegraphed miles away/eps ago. But. Henry knowing he was going to die, yet still doing his desperate-best with his last breath to soften the blow to Barry. Damn dust.

Ranking/Reviewing every Flash episode: Invincible
lbramson11 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In the penultimate episode, Barry is overly confident after getting his powers back, but the metapocolypse is destroying Earth 1, ending in some shocking resolution. "Invincible" is everything I love about the Flash in one complete package! It's got an epic, high scale, high stakes main storyline! It's got Zoom at his most intimidating with his best written dialogue ever! It's got a genius plan using "Beats by Wells" lol. It uses the concept of doppelgängers to its advantage. And, most of all, it has an ending that left my jaw on the floor! What an episode! So much to unpack! Amazing! As close to perfection as you can get!

9.9/10-THE PEAK!!!

An episode that practically summarizes the quality of Season Two
jrollings-9406720 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
*Spoilers* Holy mackerel, this is perhaps the single most polarizing episode in the show's history (to me I mean, the critical reception was overwhelmingly negative, plus, notice how many polarizing episodes there are this year). On paper, this is one of the show's most disappointing and worst episodes. After three episodes of buildup (and arguably a whole season's lead up to that build up) to Zoom invading the city with a metahuman army, the worst of Zoom's army is taken down by the Flash in the span of an opening teaser. What a cop out. Barry literally had more trouble with Captain Cold's father than he did with an ENTIRE ARMY OF SUPERPOWERED CRIMINALS!!! After that (aside from the fact that the entire episode is at night, the police station is still under Meta control, and there are a few rogue metas running loose on the streets, albeit ones who are only tangentially more powerful than your common muggers or thieves) it's business as usual in Central City. Once again, the team must face a generic Earth-2 villain who is largely defined by sharing the face of a more interesting character and relatively boring powers. Hello, Black Siren! Of all the major characters to use, Laurel Lance, really? I mean, Katie Cassidy does a decent job as the villain, but it's not like Laurel had a really close friendship to Barry or the other main characters. Couldn't they have had Earth 2 Eddie be the bad guy for this episode? Plus, Barry is written as an overconfident, cocky moron who seems to have forgotten many of the lessons he learned in the last episode. Could his faith in the speedforce have been less unsubtle? Instead of getting the wise, zen like Barry that I was hoping we'd get (the experienced and confident Barry from the Bronze age of comics) he instead regresses into his pre-Reverse Flash encounter Season One self. Talk about a poorly handed character arc. And yet, in spite of all of those flaws, Invincible has some of the Seasons best moments. After spending the better part of three episodes being powerless, seeing The Flash take down that meta army and put out the fires that their rampage had caused while Zoom angrily watches on is beautiful. His rescue of Tina McGee is equally badass. The scenes between Barry and Hunter are excellent, wonderfully played by Gustin and Sears. Hell, Gustin manages to make Barry's overconfidence feel far more natural than it should. To add that extra cherry on top, that sequence between The Flash and Captain Singh is such a wonderful nod to the end of Superman: The Movie. It makes me smile just thinking about it. Caitlin's PTSD from being Zoom's prisoner is handled very well and actually quite frightening, in spite of the fact that his holding her captive was a plot thread that essentially was written in to fill screen time and the fact that it goes nowhere and is dropped next episode. FInally, this episode is the first time where Zoom is given a motivation that is interesting. He seems less interested with taking over the city and more interested with "corrupting" Barry, who contradicts his cynical worldview by merely existing. While I will say that I felt the ending was on the nose, I still really enjoyed this episode when it aired, and I remember enjoying it the second time I saw it as well. I think invincible is a perfect representation of the overall quality of Season 2. Great performances, some excellent and memorable superhero action, and a few cool ideas, but a flimsy story and lots of wasted potential.

The show that just gets better and better.
djman-9047817 May 2016
The Flash keeps on improving with it's characters and drama ever since the first season and tonight's episode is a prime example on how to improve the characters and the story. If there is something we should point out that already has been, it's that Zoom is an excellent villain and does not hold back on how evil he is. What he does to Barry in this episode is more treacherous than what Reverse Flash ever did. It was also great seeing Laurel back (Technically) ever since what happened to her in Arrow. The only problem I could find is that there is one scene where the CG looks really fake and it took me out of it for a few seconds, but other than that this was a great episode that most best Flash episodes have. Humor, drama, and character development. I hope this show never gets cancelled because I'll never get bored with it.
