- An artist wishes to marry her childhood sweetheart and settle into family life. However, her boyfriend, who is a genius mathematician is afraid of commitment and breaks up with her just ahead of their wedding. What will the future hold in store for them?
- Diya Varma (Katirna Kaif) & Jai Varma (Sidharth Malhotra) were born on the same day in 1986, but in London and Delhi respectively. Diya's family moved to Delhi, and she moved in the same school as Jai. Diya and Jai become very good friends. Diya is from a rich family, but Jai is from a middle-class family with more modest means.
Jai is now a Vedic math professor (& popular with the girls in his classes), while Diya has launched an art gallery. While Jai hopes to get a fellowship at Cambridge University, Diya wishes for she and Jai to get married.
Diya proposes marriage to Jai. Jai speaks to Diya's father Vinod (Ram Kapoor), who is opposed as Jai is just a professor & is also fundamentally opposed to Jai moving to Cambridge University to further his career. Diya's father accepts Jai if he agrees to stay in India & join his business. The wedding is on.
Jai's mother Varsha (Sarika) is excited to welcome Diya. Jai's brother Tarun (Taaha Shah Badusha). Raj (Rohan Joshi), Jai's friend, is also in town for the wedding with his wife Chitra (Sayani Gupta) & tells Jai how he feels trapped in his own marriage. While the wedding preparations are on, Jai gets a call from his mentor at Cambridge about a job as an assistant professor. Thats a dream come true for Jai. Jai is overwhelmed by the wedding preparations (too many guests, too much money spent which he believes could have been better spent on research for Vedic math, shopping, secret sexual escapades between guests) and talks to Diya about calling the wedding off.
Jai changes his mind because of the thought of the seven vows (where each vow represents a promise made by the spouses to each other and are valid for 7 rebirths. The promises are Dharma and respect, Strength and support, Prosperity and sacrifice, Offspring and nurturing, Sense of duty and fidelity, Well-being and growth, Unity and oneness) and the many rituals, as well as the fear of divorce.
Jai protests that these rituals are meaningless and talks negatively about his wedding. Jai panics when he finds that Vinod has gifted Diya a brand-new bungalow, and he was not even a part of the decision. He tells Diya that he wants to shift to Cambridge, and that he has other plans for his bright future, and she may not be a part of it. Jai says that Diya and he want different things from life, but Diya tries to argue that if they are together, they can figure things out. Hai says that he doesn't want to be trapped between Diya and her father. She walks away heartbroken.
Suddenly, Jai wakes up (its 10 days later), he is in Thailand, on his honeymoon with Diya. Jai can't remember anything in the last 10 days. He has also resigned from his job at Delhi university and accepted the job at Cambridge. Jai is happy with Diya. Together Jai and Diya enjoy their honeymoon and have fun in each other's company.
In 2018, Jai wakes up in Cambridge, finding Diya about to deliver their child. He discovers that it has been two years since his marriage and realizes that he has been time traveling and has no control over it. Diya complains that she has been stuck in dark, cold and depressing Cambridge for 2 years and she gave up her own work to become a housewife in London. Diya considers Jai to be useless and even drives herself to the hospital for delivery. Jai finds that both his and Diya's families are also in London for the delivery. Raj and Chitra are still together.
Next day Jai wakes up in the middle of his lecture at Cambridge and he is 46 years old. Its 2034. His 16 years old son Arjun drives him to civil court, where he is in divorce proceedings with Diya. Jai is astonished to see his son grown up, but Arjun is not very connected to Jai. The court grants the divorce. Jai doesn't know why Diya has divorced him & is devastated. Heartbroken, he returns home and pleads to return to the past to set things right.
Jai wakes up the next day, in 2023, realizing he is in the past, seven years after his marriage. He juggles between taking care of his family and career. However, Jai gives more priority to work and instead of going to Diya's first art exhibition, and he goes to his friend Chitra's place to help her with her breakup, where Chitra tries to seduce Jai. Believing it to be the cause of his divorce, Jai hastily returns home, but his family is unhappy with him.
Jai remains convinced that he has set things right. The next day, he wakes up in 2047 to find himself 60 years old. He finds out that his mother has died, and everyone has gathered for her funeral. After the funeral, Jai is shocked that he and Diya are still divorced and that Diya has married art gallery owner Nikhil Khanna (Sagar Arya), her show opener, who enjoys the love of Jai's mother and children.
Reeling from this blow, Jai comes across the priest who had conducted his marriage, who warns him of the importance of time. Jai is given another opportunity to set things right as he goes back to 2023 on time to the same day, seven years after his marriage. This time, he sets things right. He spends time with his children, does his work well and makes Diya feel special, and attends her art exhibition. At the end of the day, Jai is a happy man.
Jai wakes up back into the present, the day after he argued with Diya about his life and his career, got drunk, and began the long mental voyage into his future while. Jai rushes back to Diya, cherishing every moment along the way, also glad to see his mother again. Jai reconciles with Diya and promises to be true to her. The film ends with them marrying and everyone dancing.
