An unforgettable musical treat!
pratikirkal22 November 2015
Katyar Kaljat Ghusli has its crux in its music. The music of the movie is the star of the movie. Hats off to the whole cast and crew of the movie who worked for three and a half years to carve out this masterpiece. I would specially mention Shankar Mahadevan, Rahul Deshpande and Mahesh Kale for their mesmerizing voice with songs like Sur Niragas Ho, Ghei Chhand Makarand, Dil Ki Tapish & many more. Shivam Mahadevan is like the icing on the cake with the very beautiful song Mann Mandira Tejane. Sachin Pilgaonkar, Subodh Bhave, Shankar Mahadevan, Amruta Khanvilkar, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Pushkar Shrotri & Sakshi Tanvar have given justice to their respective role. A must watch film for all those who love music.

Brilliant production value & a brilliant film from all aspects
chaitannya15 November 2015
This film got a standing ovation where I watched it. This is for the first time I witnessed standing ovation. Usually the producers demand some degree of commercial elements in the film to make it commercially successful. This film preserves the authenticity of the story, without compromising on any of it's aspect. This is top class production values. I am absolutely sure this film will get standing ovation in various international screenings.

The film is based on a play of same name & film makers have done well to preserve the authenticity of script & music. The heart of the film is classical music, which is very well choreographed. The climax of the film is amazing & literally gave me goose-bump.

A treat for your ears you don't want to miss !!
shrikantbhusari12 November 2015
Let me begin by saying that I don't have ear for the classical music. My father had seen the original musical play and we decided to watch the movie. And what a treat it was !! Starting from the first song "Sur Niragas" you are in awe of the past era and the might of music. I was in tears at Shankar Mahadevan's "Ghei Chhand Makarand". And it's not just Shankar, the other two leads Rahul Deshpande and Mahesh Kale (Yes, they are the leads even if they are not the faces you see on screen) are a treat to hear as well. The filmmakers have done well with the old classics and adding new compositions as well which don't look out of place. I could rave on and on about the music, but I would just suggest to experience this quality of music. The beauty of movie is that while the music is great, it does not fail in other aspects. The storyline is tight and moving well in both halves. Background score added to the impact. And the actors have well with their parts. No hamming. Especially Subodh and Sachin are so excellent that you won't feel that they are not the actual singers. Overall, I wont say "watch" the movie, I'd recommend, "experience" it !!

Its a treat for Art Lovers...Speechless performances!!!
AdityaChaphekar13 November 2015
Its a masterpiece by Subodh Bhave on his debut. I really do not know much about classical music, but it doesn't matter when you hear something like this. There should be a standing ovation after every show for the singers, composers, who have succeeded in taking this film at some different level. Its been quite a while that we have watched a musical film like Katyar Kaljat Ghusali. The cast includes some prolific actors like Sachin Pilgaonkar. I have adored him for his performances while I was a kid in some films. Its a comeback for him. I am sure the audience will love him in this film. Throughout the film, you feel like Sachin and Subodh are actually singing. Lyrics, Story, Dialogues, Sound, Lighting is as good as the music. My favorite dialogue in the movie," Live Long. Keep Singing." and "Any artist lives for that moment, when the audience wants the artist(singer) to perform and they keep applauding for the sheer talent. Shankar Mahadevan, our beloved one has done really well as an actor, as its his debut too. I cannot eulogize him more as he has been impeccable in his music and his songs in the film. Noteworthy and Excellence by Rahul Deshpande, Shankar Mahadevan, Mahesh Kale and Arijit Singh, Divya Kumar, Shivam Mahadevan. The Music is soothing and Soul of KKG.

No Words a limit ...
sandyfriends200422 November 2015
A movie which is related to music , is always seen as a movie , with no credibility, No liking and No life. And on top of that if the movie is with Classical music is always recognized as boring. Now Thinking ' Katyar Kaljat Ghusali ' is in that category; then you doing the biggest mistake in judging movies a great caliber. The movie is all about, Music , FriendShip , Forgiveness , love , ego, Help , Anger , Hatred. The Movie displays how music was the prime entertainment option in British rule, and how British rulers made use of strategy of divide and rule , and Indians used to fall for the pray. But Indians have great qualities such as power of forgiveness, love , talent and perseverance , that over comes , hatred and ego. All this is directed and played purely with music. The movie is a must watch, those who admires all that I said in my previous lines. The Movie , most of renowned , musicians , actors... So go and watch it in Theatre

Beautiful presentation of a beautiful story
efriendmayur22 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Subodh Bhave, is in Marathi industry for quite a time now. He is known for his acting powers , but after this movie , he will be known for his directorial powers also. Absolutely superb direction. Kudos for avoiding all unnecessary melodrama , love triangles. Hats off for making a movie which even people who do not understand classical music , are loving.

Casting Shankar Mahadevan as Pandit ji was a masterstoke. Sachin Pilgaonkar has absolutely nailed Khan Saheb, apart from few scenes, where he goes overboard. Supporting star cast is also excellent. Looking at Mrunmayee Deshapande's acting, I must say Marathi industry has got a very potentially excellent actress.

All singers have preformed exceptionally well. Fireflies scene also turned out to be excellent.

A surreal experience
asmitak7 December 2015
A lot has already been said about this cultural phenomenon in the Marathi world. Here's adding my two cents on it.

Katyar... is a film about the centuries-old, grand tradition of classical music in India with royal patronage. It is based on a Marathi play of the same name, originally released in 1967 as a "Sangeet Natak" aka musical. The genre of music prevalent in such plays was called "Natyasangeet" which was and still is an immensely popular art form in Marathi culture. With this background in mind and being a natyasangeet fan, I walked into the AMC Theater at Cupertino, yesterday, with sky high expectations from the film's music. Not only did it exceed all my expectations but it enraptured me, leaving me yearning for more. With the two maestros (Rahul Deshpande and Shankar Mahadevan) at the top of their game, ably supported by stellar artists, each rendition felt like a savory treat to devour. Appreciation abounded around me in the form of head nods and leg taps. As for me, having grown up listening to these songs being played by my grandfather on his harmonium, this brought back countless childhood memories – as a result of which there were some embarrassingly tearful moments throughout the duration of the movie. Hopefully the head-nodders and leg-tappers were too engrossed to notice...

The story revolves around a man's (Khan Saheb's) battered ego and his resulting dangerous obsession with winning at all costs. This is so fundamental to human nature that it easily strikes a chord. And who better to play the troubled, envious, complex Khan Saheb, than the veteran actor Sachin, who infuses such humanity in the character that your heart goes out to him even in his darkest moments. From the modest and aspiring talented artist to the manipulative, conniving, bordering-on-cruel royal singer, Sachin captivates us at every stage of the character's transformation. Subodh Bhave, though slightly miscast as the young and impulsive Sadashiv, is sincere and convincing. As for Shankar Mahadevan, I had my doubts about his histrionic abilities, but he seems so much like the benevolent music-loving Panditji in real life, that he fit in really well. Amruta Khanvilkar and Mrunmayee Deshpande are adorable as the innocent childhood friends who are forced into estrangement through no fault of their own. On a side note, all the female characters in the film, are shown to be spectacularly practical which is a refreshing change – one of them adeptly stops a man from committing murder while another questions her husband's decision to gift a "katyar"(dagger) as the prize for a music competition. If only men listened...

The stunning visuals, the background score and the beautiful costumes also deserve a mention. The movie's high production value is quite evident in most of the scenes. Overall, a surreal experience – especially for the musically inclined.

In the barrage of films and other entertainment products that come our way, every once in a while comes a creation that touches your soul and leaves an indelible mark on it. For me, Katyar Kaljaat Ghusli is that gem of a film.

must watch movie, splendid performances by subodh Bhave and never seen Sachin Pilgaokar
suraj-mehare-26-36847817 November 2015
awesome storyline and fantastic acting done by Subodh Bhave,Sachin and Amruta Khanvilkar, rest of the crew also done their job very well like singer turned actor(first time) Shankar Mahadevan,Sakhshi Talwar,Mrinmayi Deshpande. but of course Sachin and Subodh are the center of the movie and story as well. apart from storyline music is the most important factor contributing making this movie must watchable,i must write here that songs are must listen by music lover.the essence of classical music is kept very peak by the singers-Rahul Deshpande and Shankar Mahadevan!! Divya Kumar,Arjit Singh,Mahesh Kale all did good job but the classical music lovers got the Diwali treat of awesome songs sung by Rahul Deshpande and Shankar Mahadevan. Subodh Bhave-an actor and director of the movie is like gem of Marathi cine industry.marvelous performance by him after Lokmanya.hats off to him. Sachin-never seen role, gray shade of his role depicts the actual humane tendency in both senses-bad and good. all Marathi lovers must go and watch this movie and enjoy the harmony of the overwhelming songs also.

Powerful storyline and overwhelming musical saga. Sachin pilgaonkar brilliant act as khan saheb. Shankar Mahadevan create magic with their singing All you need to do is sit in your seat, close your eyes and let the magic of music seep through the veins right into your heart a rare music-oriented film whose subject is a mixture of one-upmanship, betrayal and revenge.

No words to describe it. One of the masterpieces ever created
7th_moon_of_jupyter3 January 2016
The movie is an adaptation of Marathi play with the same title. The movie is about clash of two clans of singers. Obviously the movie has numerous songs and each one of those songs is brilliant. Splendid singing by few brilliant singers in India viz. Shankar Mahadevan, Rahul Deshpande, Mahesh Kale and Arijit Singh. 'Takyar Kaljat Ghusli' being one of the most epic play in Indian history, I personally was worried about how good they can transform the play into a movie. To my delight and shock it was as brilliant as the epic play and will be considered as one of the greatest works in the industry for centuries. A must watch movie for all the music loving people. The quality, richness, variety and difficulty of singing in the movie is unparalleled.

Sachin is brilliant!
rxarty28 August 2020
Watch this movie for amazing music and the sheer brilliance of the craft of acting by Sachin Pilgaokar. He is simply marvelous in the movie! I have immense respect for his acting skills, sometimes i feel sad that such amazing actors don't find their place in Bollywood. Anyways, the movie is based on a musical rivalry between two great singers. The climax of the movie is superb and again Sachin's performance made me stand up in my seat and clap! I wish i had seen this in the cinemas!

A Musical Masterpiece
somtr20 November 2015
We coincidentally ended up watching Katyar Kaljat Ghusli on the opening day, when while browsing through the list of movies I took its name and my father remembered the same from his childhood. I was really fortunate to end up watching the same (its my first Marathi movie in a Cinema Hall).

A Musical Masterpiece with excellent acting by Sachin and Subodh Bhave, the movie is a must go for any music lover (I don't particularly listen to classical music), but especially for lover of Classical Hindustani music. With a lot of original songs by Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki being retained, Shankar-Ehsan-Loy have not just done justice to the original, but have added their own touch and blended their classical music with the old.

With almost half of the movie and songs in Urdu, I would recommend this movie even to non-Marathi speaking viewer.

Best Marathi Musical Film with great Acting, music & songs. 8.5/10
mangeshmila14 November 2015
'Katyar Kaljat Ghusali' is the best Marathi Movie of 2015.I Watched it on the First day with my family,it blew my mind. And the subtitles helped a lot to understand the meaning of lyrics. Best screenplay so far and impeccable performances.Storyline was good, the 'katyar' wasgood too.No one can imagine Sachin sir in a negative role but he gave a very powerful performance.Music was really good, every song in the movie was impeccably & perfectly written.Since I haven't seen the'play'(natak), I enjoyed watching the film. Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Jitendra Abhishek's soulful notes will echo in your ears and give you a happy hangover. Subodh Bahave who enthralled everyone with great movies like 'Balgandharva' & 'Lokmanya Balgandharva Tilak' is back with this Movie. Its a masterpiece and was not easy to remake, but Subodh did a fantastic job. Katyar means 'a dagger through the heart'. There is Indian classical music and Marathi Natya Sangeet. The Everything was Perfect .. (Hope that there'll be more similar movies like Katyar)

Truly The Epic Musical Masterpiece.
SAMTHEBESTEST13 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Katyar Kaljat Ghusli REVIEW- Heard an year ago that The Epic Musical Masterpiece of Marathi drama world 'Katyar Kaljat Ghusli' would be remade as a film. Since then i gone craze i was waiting for this movie like anything. Then first teaser came and the star cast was completely shocking for me and that teaser won my heart. Then full trailer released and everyone got idea that this is going to be epic all the way, only morons can skip this movie. Finally the day arrived today and i watched the movie in theater. And my reactions are- Hands down, salute, hats off, take a bow, i wont review this film i will watch it 2-3 times more for my soul's satisfaction and bla bla. Really i had very very very high expectations from movie and film completed my all expectations. The old classic drama was little bit difficult for masses to understand but here they got much larger scale and enough space to made those difficult parts a simple one which will be simple to understand for masses even. Those who have seen the original drama including me will definitely like it and it is the biggest achievement of this film's team cause that drama was a masterpiece. No one can think to make similar level quality film to that drama but still makers of KKG took the risk and succeeded by huge margin. And those who haven't seen the drama will 100% like it not only classes but also masses. Really i cant describe the epicness of this movie in words still i will try my best to share my thoughts about the movie cause i want everybody to read my review understand it and then watch the movie and that is why this would be the longest reviews of my life. So lets talk about each and every field. I start from Acting - This field has got 101 out of 100 according to me. Really this happens very rarely that each and every actor has given best performances of their career. Shankar Mahadevan the man who is not a professional actor has given better performance than many professional actors. I mean he just acted what he is naturally and that worked for the film big way. This is the best debut for any ACTOR in Marathi industry. Kudos for him. The next man Mr. Sachin Pilgaonkar wow one of the legendary actor in India. Working in the industry for more than 50 years and now i found his best performance of his career in KKG. Got the chance to play the memorable character of Khan Saheb on screen and made me feel like no one could have done this role better than him. Another set of kudos. Now one of the main character of KKG Sadashiv played by my favorite actor Subodh Bhave. Whoh he proved again why he is my favorite actor. Those eyes when gets emotional aha words cant describe my thoughts. This time no kudos but a Grand Salute. Now those 2 leading ladies Mrunmayi Deshpande and Amruta Khanvilkar have given the best performance of their careers. There cant be a chance for female actor to shine in make oriented film but these 2 bagged important roles and proved their acting metal like a boss. Other star cast were awesome. Acting field is the 1 of the reasons why this movie will be remembered for years. Screenplay :- film had a runtime of 150+ mins but still didn't get bore for a minute and the brilliant screenplay is reason behind it. Cinematography :- probably it looked like the grandest film of Marathi cinema. Those huge sets, large scale shooting, some visual effects were treat for eyes. Music :- KKG drama had the immortal music of Pt. Jeetendra Abhisheki and sung by Pt. Vasanrao Deshpande and other legends so everyone expected copy paste of that music with today's singers voice and music completed my dream to listen the immortal songs on big screen. Certainly the best music ever. Shankar Mahadevan added some new songs to movie and all were awesome which made the music saga to be continued. All songs such as 'Ghei Chand', 'Sur Niragas Ho','Tejonidhi Lohgol','Surat Piya ki' are like diwali gift for ears Music is 5 on 5 for and i will watch movie 1 extra time for its music only. 1 salute to all singers too. Direction - Thumbs up for Subodh Bhave who took a huge risk by choosing this film to make his directional debut. This is one of the best debut in Marathi industry after Ravi Jadhav. He did some changes in script for today's audience and whatever he did worked big way. I just want to ask him why he made that climax with less space for epic song 'Surat Piya Ki' i mean i expected at least 4-5 mins for that song but he used it for 2 mins only then added new song. Except that a perfect direction and a perfect justice to original drama. Hats off..thanks Subodh Bhave for making my Diwali memorable... Final words - Now even after reading this review if you skip this movie then you doesn't deserve to be called a movie lover. Classes masses youngster seniors all just cant miss this Epic Musical Masterpiece. You will have 100 time pass 100 Lai Bhaari and many money making entertainers but you will never have Masterpiece like Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. Don't miss your time in thinking just Go and watch this epic movie in your nearest theater. Kharokharch hi Katyar mazhya Kaljat Ghusli... Will surely watch it 3-4 times in theater and many times on TV... 10/10* stars by me. The only second movie after 'Court' to get 10 stars by me...

It's a musical masterpiece
kartik-a-rokde10 December 2015
What a movie!! It's a musical masterpiece.

Excellent direction, very good cinematography, very beautiful acting, excellent music / songs.

I think this movie will get one of the Oscars..!

It's a must watch movie for classical music lovers. The low-high-low notes in all the songs are just fantastic. You'll also love the passion shown for music.

If you are a non Marathi, then also you can go and watch the movie as it has English Subtitles. Also, there's also use of Hindi/Urdu in the movie, so you'll get into the story very easily.

Marathi Cinema @ its best(Suranchi Katyar Kharach Kaljat Ghusli)
samviper1025 December 2015
The story takes us to the musical era which has not seen or heard by my generation. Still as a fan of classical music I went to watch the movie. I was aware the movie will b good but It was unreal experience to watch the acting, listen to one of kind music is just out of this world. There was a time where people would have laughed if someone say I am going for Marathi movie. Now even Hindi audience is coming to watch Marathi movies. I don't think its just a movie. "I THINK ITS AN EXPERIENCE WHICH SHOULD BE ENJOY BY EACH GENERATION"

Special Mention to

Sachin Pilgaokar - for showing us and given a negative role how powerful his acting can be

Shankar Mahadeven - never felt its his debut movie

Subodh Bhave - from Balgandharva to Lokmanya to Katyar, he is just increasing audience exp. to sky by each of his movies

Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy - This trio given evergreen music and will last forever

Sameer Samant,Mangesh Kangne, Mandar Cholkar - for writing new songs keeping in mind the essence of originals songs from the play

I will recommend to all the people to go and experience the saga of Katyar

Its a mesmerizing musical experience
cp-baba16 December 2015
KKG is a masterpiece with a predictable plot. The rating is not for the plot but the music, cast and performance by each and everyone involved in the creation of this masterpiece. The strength of the movie lies in its music. The stars have done their part really well. Amazing performance by Sachin sir and Mahadevan sir. The movie not only recreates the era but also make the watcher take the experience with them. The movie has many débutant Mahadevan sir (Panditji - actor), Subodh Bhave sir (Director, actor), Mahesh Kale (singer).

Special mention for Sachin Sir, he has played the role of Khansaheb phenomenally well. While watching I could not believe he didn't sing his songs.

This is a piece of art which should be cherished for years to come!

Reviving 'NatyaSangeet' in a different form
omkar198411 April 2019
Wm naïve as far as ' NatyaSangeet' concerned, the director and the cast must be applauded for attempting to rebuild the dilapidated bridges between the pristine 'NatyaSangeet' and the masses(music connoisseurs and trained people are treated as exceptions here) in the new generations who are almost clueless about it ! While I'm unqualified to judge whether the musical revival has succeeded, the new additions like 'Ilaahi'(notable lyrics) , 'Man Mandira', 'Dil ki Tapish' and 'Aruni Kirani' are enchanting ! Oblivious losers like me now realize why the voices like Rahul Deshpande are so adored !!! Sachin hasn't been able to control his overacting, yet, his role is the most impressive as compared with the others in the movie. Even if 10% of the audience go back and watch the original masterpieces (plays), it would open up chests carrying treasures of the Indian classical music ...

Different Strokes
darkknight3993-119 January 2016
Let me start this review by saying that a Marathi/Hindi film has not inspired me in a long time. The industry constantly puts out movies that beg to be smeared; a cheesy mess of acting, dialogue, camera movements, and sound that would leave any serious western audience member offended. Katyar sidesteps most of these "film death tropes" as I like to call them, and offers a story that would not be complete without its music.

On a surface level, Katyar follows the basic outline of the Prince and the Pauper story, a poor man and a rich man who have fundamentally different values wish to trade places but must sacrifice a part of themselves to do so. The themes of this film are entrenched in the music of the different gharanas, which in this case . If anyone is curious, the age old Indian conflict of Hindus versus Muslims plays a huge part in the movie's iconography, but is handled with more subtlety than I have ever seen in Indian cinema. The actors give off a ZeeTV soap opera feel to the whole affair (without the atrocious camera work and editing effects); but let's be real, these actors are really just here to give the music and cultural setting. And boy do the sights and sounds of this movie impress.

I could probably do a separate review even longer that this one about the film's soundtrack, but since this is a movie review sight, I'll talk more about how the sounds relate to the film. The booming beats of the Hindustani pakhawaj coming with the soothing swarmandal and droning tanpura back the voices of Shankar Mahadevan and Subodh Bhave (who had Rahul Deshpande singing for him), each of whom give a performances that would make the actual legends of this gharana proud. To parallel the Hindustani style, the fast tempo, poppy tabla, and light melodies of the sarangi and harmonium back Mahesh Kale's undeniably great voice. Each note, voice, melody, and harmony shine through in the production, and are really the highlights of the film. The visuals serve to boost the music sequences, but don't offer much more than what a stage production of this script could have offered. In fact, at many points of he film, I found myself wishing that I had seen this as a play instead of a movie; what a play would have lost in terms of production value, it would gain in terms of pure charm.

Overall, Katyar is bursting at the seams with Indian cultural charm. I felt like the film opened a connection between me and my Indian ancestors, a connection that I've never really felt before. Despite not breaking away completely from some of the egregious tropes of Indian cinema, the magnetic effect the film had on my subconscious makes it one of the best Marathi/Hindi movies I've ever seen. I may have my biases as an aficionado of classical music, but this film is an important showcase of Indian culture and music, and a must watch for anyone that is even remotely interested in these topics.

One of the best musicals of all time
bhosalevinayak29 November 2015
This movie elevates Marathi cinema and Indian classical music to highest possible level. Please watch and support Marathi Cinema by buying authentic copies of audio/video because you will most certainly want to watch this movie again and again for its class and music. I have ordered mine :). Singers Rahul Deshpande and Shankar Mahadevan have just created a master piece. Actor and Directory Subodh Bhave have also shined so well in the lights of our legend Sir Sachin Pigaonkar. Love the story as well. This movie correctly portrays the free open minded pundits that believed truly in the art of singing and gave all equal opportunity to compete and excel.
