Update, November 23: NewFilmmakers Los Angeles has announced the recipient of its inaugural NewNarratives grant, a program supported by WarnerMedia’s OneFifty division created to support and develop emerging global storytellers. Filmmaker Jim Vendiola will receive $40,000 for the development of his feature “Argus,” about a disaffected private eye who is hired to reinvestigate the case of a missing teen long thought to have run away. It shifts points of view between the detective, an obsessive killer, and the pre-abduction life of the victim and is described by Nfmla as a “subversive, Bipoc, female-driven reimagining of 1970s Neo-noirs.”
The Chicago-based Vendiola, a first-generation Filipino-American, is a writer, director, and development exec who has thrice been a Newcity Film 50 honoree. He’s also a Nfmla alum

South Korean Takeover
Cj’s Endeavor: In a deal valuing the equity at almost $1Bn, Endeavor Content has sold the majority of its scripted business to South Korean mega giant Cj Enm. Things moved quickly. Rumor had abounded Monday when Endeavor execs said they had identified a “short list” of potential buyers on an earnings call and by Thursday afternoon it was clear Parasite (pictured) distributor Cj was the one. The deal for 80% of Endeavor’s scripted business was worth $775M and values that part of the business close to $1Bn. Big numbers.

Slippery, fluid, and constantly evolving.
These were the answers provided to the question of ‘What is authenticity?’ at the Asia Pacific Screen Forum on Friday.
A panel comprising Fijian writer/director Vilsoni Hereniko, Indonesian filmmaker Kamila Andini, and Australian producer/director Ana Tiwary joined moderator Pearl Tan for an exploration of how to navigate the demands of production to deliver authentic stories.
When it came to defining the term, all three panelists were in agreement about its non-fixed nature.
For Hereniko, who made Fiji’s first feature film The Land Has Eyes in 2004 and was a cultural consultant for Disney’s Moana, it was important to differentiate between physical and emotional representation.
“Authenticity is a very slippery term to figure out,” he said.

“The Crown” actor Derek Jacobi has boarded David Bartlett’s short film “Mousie” as executive producer, Variety can exclusively reveal. The film, which is produced by Will Poole (“Waffle the Wonder Dog”), tells the story of a seven-year-old Roma girl who seeks sanctuary from the Nazis in a decaying Weimar Cabaret Club.
“’Mousie’ is such a beautiful film – original, heartbreaking, yet also uplifting,” says Jacobi, who played the Duke of Windsor in Netflix’s royal series. “It is so relevant and provocative too. Amid really atmospheric cinematography and art direction, David Bartlett’s exquisite direction has delivered the most arresting performances, led by a remarkable young child. ‘Mousie’ is unmissable.”

Sight Unseen Pictures’ producers Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev haven’t decided where to put their brand-new Emmy Awards — mostly because they haven’t gotten them in the mail yet.
“It’s great; that was such an exciting little treat and not expected and we’re super humbled by it,” Vaisman tells Variety of winning the trophy for producing HBO’s “Bad Education.” “The problem is we have young children, so they’re literally going to take it and bash each other with it. I guess we probably have to keep it in the office.”
“They’re much heavier [than you’d expect] — I held Lena’s when she won it, at the after party,” Lebedev adds, recalling Lena Waithe’s historic Emmy win in 2017 for writing “Master of None.” “I was like, ‘I’m gonna give this back to you because I’m definitely gonna drop it.’ I think the office is a safer place.

Neon has snatched the domestic theatrical rights to Justin Simien’s new horror film “Bad Hair.”
The Oscar-winning distributor behind “Parasite” will take the film out to drive-in theaters nationwide before it debuts on Hulu on Oct. 23, Variety has learned.
Markets will include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New Orleans, Detroit, Austin, Sacramento and Las Vegas. “Bad Hair” was acquired for millions out of Sundance this year, where it was received as an energetic American take on hair horror and a probe of Black female identity.
Hulu is Neon’s streaming video partner, and the companies have enjoyed fruitful partnerships on titles like “Palm Springs,” the Sundance sale record-breaker from Andy Samberg that premiered this summer.
“Bad Hair” has played the Essence Festival, CurlFest, UrbanWorld — where Simien received the 2020 festival ambassador award — Chicago Film Festival, New York Comic Con, Beyond Fest and One Music Festival. Simien wrote and directed the movie,...

Belgian public television starts filming on Baraki, its first 26’ format series, Coyotes and Pandore, as post-production on Unseen is wrapping up. The Rtbf and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation continue their joint program of TV series production, hoping to find successors to La Trêve, Unité 42 or Ennemi Public. The Covid-19 crisis has interrupted the filming of Unseen only a few days before wrapping (the last takes were finally shot in June and the show should be broadcast some time in Autumn), and has delayed that of Pandore. But this Summer saw the return to film sets in order to guarantee new content to broadcast in 2021. The first production to get started is Baraki, a series by Julien Vargas, Peter Ninane and Fred de Loof, which follows the trials and tribulations of a working-class family. It will be...

Ventana Sur’s Blood Window sidebar for projects and films in progress has been a standout event on the Latin horror calendar since its launch in 2013, and is one of the Buenos Aires market’s most popular sections.
In the following years, it has become a key two-way conduit between Latin American and international festivals and box offices.
To that end, one of coordinator Javier Fernández’s primary focuses for this year’s seventh edition is to “continue promoting our collaboration with fantastic international film festivals and industry events,” he explained to Variety ahead of the December event.
This year’s Blood Window Spotlight on International Projects includes five works brought to Buenos Aires by the Bucheon Korea International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan), Sitges Catalunya Fantastic Film Festival and Bif-Market from the Brussels Fantastic Film Festival and Nordic Genre Invasion.

Red Skull made his shocking first appearance in the McU since 2011 in Avengers: Infinity War, with it being revealed that he’d been transported to the planet Vormir by the Space Stone at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. In the 80 years since, he’s remained there, acting as the Soul Stone’s guardian. The former Hydra leader even describes himself as being cursed to serve this higher power that he’s doomed never to possess.
Due to his grim reaper-like appearance in Infinity War, fans immediately saw the comparisons between Johann Schmidt and Mistress Death, who featured in the original Infinity Gauntlet comic book storyline but was left out of the movie adaptation in order to simplify things. While this was no doubt at least partly the intention, there is another character from the Marvel universe that Red Skull’s role in the film resembles much more closely.
