One strange brew
sitenoise30 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Basically a story we've seen from Japan a thousand times: Pretty girl transfer student from Tokyo to Hicksville falls for the brooding bad boy in class. It treats this middle school romance as if it were a little more mature than it is. What sets it apart are some of the directorial choices in editing and sound.

There are some over-the-top drama moments that would kill the film if they weren't normalized by the weirdness of the overall. Almost every scene in the film is accompanied by a different piece of music. Some good, some not so good, but they all act strongly, not in the background, in shaping the emotion of the scene. And the director uses the emotion, or intensity, of the music to shape her film editing. It's not subtle, and I don't think I've seen anything like it before--at least to the extent that the whole film follows this pattern, scene after scene.

*Drowning Love* doesn't seem to care much about being a film as much as being a Live Action adaptation of a manga (which I haven't read). The director (I learned after the fact and it made perfect sense) is a 20-something young woman. It's like "Hey! One of us actually did this instead of some pervy old man!" and may explain some of the music video/video game aspects of the presentation.

There's one big problem with it. Well, two. The first is: it doesn't really make sense. The second is: it starts off as a typical teen romance (shojo, I think they're called), then an attempted/aborted rape happens which kicks up the intensity--until it gets lost. And that's the problem. This middle school girl almost gets raped, and two minutes later in the film it's forgotten or downplayed by everyone until the end where it's brought back up for the finale. There's also a "sensitive boy" friend who gets tossed off the film after doing his little duty, and the adults in the film are just place holders who look out of place in the film--basically the way they must look to most middle school kids. Kudos for that.

Nana Komatsu of *World of Kanako* fame stars. She's got a certain set of chops. Some fancy boy idol, who dyed his hair blond for the role, plays broody boy. They have chemistry, and I enjoyed Nana's complexity in dealing with broody boy. He treats her like a dog and she's determined to get to a place where he will be a whimpering puppy. And tells him as much. I enjoy the way the Japanese use middle school students to act out a Doomed Lovers play. You look at the players--they're young, there's no sex. They seem innocent, but are given dialog that betrays a wisdom and experience beyond their years.

Not recommending it to anyone who isn't already interested in these kinds of movies. But this one is a little different and could offer something of interest because of the out-of-the-box way it's constructed. I think the ending is supposed to be big and meaningful but it didn't make any sense to me. It's not a film that meanders around and offers a emotional payoff at the end. It just spirals off.

Way too over the top
mister_bateman9 July 2020
It starts out like a cute, wholesome little romance story with nice cinematography and scenery. The attraction between the girl and the guy are portrayed in this sweet, almost poetic dance of him drawing her in, then pushing her away, him teasing her and running away, making her chase after him. But then the drama becomes too unrealistic and just goes way over the top towards almost absurd territory.

In short, I enjoyed the first part but then it kind of fell apart a bit.

It was nice, and sad (and there's no way to be sure about what really happens at the end of the movie)

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was pretty cool, even though the plot remains unclear. I think you don't lose anything watching it if you don't hate love stories. To be precise, there was little music but it was good, the acting was great (of course, there's Masaki Suda... annnd Nana Komatsu, I'll admit she's pretty good too), and I also liked the visual atmosphere. However the backstory was quite weak :)

NOW: SPOIL I just watched the movie so I apologize if there are some mistakes here, I'm currently holding my tear- I mean I'm doing great and am going to try to explain what I understood. Well first, this movie is obvisouly heartbreaking because each character is so kind and at the same time things just seem like they can't work out. There are Koh and Natsume but there's also this one other guy who's sooo cool, I'm glad he was there otherwise I'd just have cried from the beginning to the end of the movie. Anyways, to me, this is about the two teens meeting and then it's love at first sight I guess. They have their own way of seeing things but that's okay. When the raping-tentative-event happens Kou isn't able to save her and that kind of breaks him. I think he felt very guilty about this and that's why it's so hard for him to get back to her. It's similar for Natsume, maybe she thinks he's responsible because he didn't save her but to me it's more likely to be about how difficult it is to face him after what happened to the both of them. Then they go to highscool. Kô hangs out with violent guys because, even if he doesn't say so, it's OBVIOUS he tries to get stronger (not the best way but it works since he beats the hell out of like ten people at the same time lol). Eventually they meet again but Ko rejects her again. I guess he still can't accept his failure a year ago. Finally when the weirdo comes back again, he IS able to do something. It seems he would have killed the guy if Kana weren't here (thanks god she was there, thanks to her Kô isn't a murderer). After all of this, Kana (and maybe Kô) get rid of the prooves. Everything disappears. But that's how Natsume is able to go on as an actress and makes this film about her past. After this, there's a whole lot of theories. If you want the true story I guess you can read the manga (I won't). I saw someone saying that it would be about Kô being a semi-god and becoming a real God after Natsume begins to really believe in him, it was actually a pretty smart thought. But I want to believe that, as she calls Kô her god from the start, maybe she just hopes he's in a movie theater, watching her right now. And she wonders if she'll ever be able to accept the fact that she can't meet with him anymore because that's how things are. Though she still can't accept it and that's why she imagines how the movie could have ended :she imagines her not going to Tokyo, but getting off the bus and leaving with Kô. she always hesitated between doing entertainment stuff and staying with Kô. It seems she's now following the first of these two paths even if that's not what she really wanted.

Good enough

Warning: Spoilers
Drowning Love is an okay movie, with an intense love story which was ruined by the odd directing techniques. First of all, the story was confusing a bit, though you get the main idea in the end and you can follow it for a while, so the messed up story line wasn't my main problem. The thing that ruined the movie for me was the way it was directed. Sequences were cut off (especially one that had a loud, happy music and then, suddenly, it was cut off), the camera was either too far away, either too close, in some scenes you could hear the actors talking but you could only see the waves, in others you had only Nana just laying down (maybe the director was in love with her...) like it was a photo shoot or something etc etc. Anyway, the main idea was that the director was all over the place, especially with holding long scenes for too long and with other scenes where you could only hear the actors breathing. Finally, the constant running around, chasing each other, was a bit odd, but you can overlook that compared to the bad directing. Thankfully, the performances were outstanding, and the love story had something in it to make you continue watching this film, probably because the couple had chemistry. So, 4 out of 10.

sometimes you need to lay off the imagery
ayahef26 February 2021
The way the scenes cut and dialogue went left me very confused. The director failed to show how the relationship between the main characters even develops at the beginning, you just kind of have to fool yourself that you understand what's going on and hope that it makes sense later. It doesn't really make sense even at the end. The dialogue is cheesy and I don't really get why the director made them chase each other frequently, I guess to portray some 'youthfulness' but it was just silly to be honest. There are also odd uses of close ups and far away shots that feel like they drag for a bit too long. I admit, it was quite refreshing at times but it did get boring after a while. The story gets unrealistic and was very frustrating to watch. However, I loved the acting, especially Nana Komatsu. If it wasn't for her performance, I would've even have finished it.

A Must Watch Young Love Story
gekaiy14087 June 2018
This is like the representative of being young and dumbly in love. There is the kind of feeling in which they are deeply love each other but just aren't meant to be together. The movie will be pretty confusing, but you need to remember that the characters are teenagers. Aren't we going round and round and running a little bit from the one that we like?

I don't know what to say
yeshidems29 July 2017
Actually, I watched this movie for Nana and was expecting something romantic and a light movie but it was not. I have neck read the manga it was adapted from. This is not my kind of movie as I didn't know what was going on in the movie but I must say all the actors acted very well. It depends on our choice, so some may love it and some may hate it. But it was not my kind of movie and therefore, I rated 5 for Nana.

Interesting movie about young love
baharuka2 September 2018
You chase a love object while they run away for their own reasons, you get exhausted, then you chase some more in despair, questioning if you're masochistic. I think it's a situation a lot of people can relate to, especially about their teens and early twenties, and this movie is the place to revisit the feeling. The main character talks at some point about thinking you can get everything when you're around fifteen and how you need something or someone to rock your world, if I didn't get the Japanese wrong, and it's all relatable.

There are two unlikeable main characters: The teen fashion model turned small town schoolgirl who needs action and the troubled, cocky local boy with bleached hair. The characters are interesting but you don't like them, which I think was intended. The story takes place in a town of great nature. A lot of scenes involve the sea and the forest and the characters interact with the nature while they try to capture each other, which I liked. Paired with the catchy soundtrack and the partly wordless communication between the leads, the movie does give a unique feeling. The second part revolves around an unfortunate thing that happens to the girl and how the boy reacts to it, and the movie has been criticized for handling how the adult characters react to that event, or the lack of their reaction, which I agree. However, this is a manga adaptation and that might have stemmed from the manga, not sure.

Overall, an interesting watch from Japan.

What a mess
bookwurmm27 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was expecting a fun, light hearted, romance movie about 2 teenagers. Instead, I get a movie about two teenagers traumatized by an attempted rape. Crazy there is no warning about that being an integral part of the film. It is an uncomfortable and confusing watch.

The dialogue is confusing, the editing and shots make no sense, and if there is some message hidden in this film it is hidden very well because it makes no sense. This movie actively makes your life worse. What the hell did I just watch? The two leads have no chemistry and I have no idea why we as the audience should believe they like each other because we are not given any reason to believe that they even want to be in the same room.

The communication between characters is confusing, and that translates to the communication of what's on screen for the audience to understand: we have no idea what to feel or how the characters feel because we are not shown things fast or clearly enough. It makes sense that the dialogue is confusing because it seems like every aspect of this film lacks the ability to communicate. Watching this movie feels like you are one step behind because the characters see things that are off camera and react to them before we see what they see.

Characters say things we don't understand because it feels like they had conversations without us, so we have no context for why characters feel the way they do.

I can't even wrap my head around how bad this film is. It incomprehensibly poorly made.

young and beautiful

I had searched for this movie and then decided to watch it just for Masaki Suda and killing time.To be honest ,I did not have so much expectations of it but that I have been watching it changed my mind and caught me by BIG surprise. This is a romance movie where distinguishes itself from others are its full-blown and artistic narrative structure, most appropriate actors selected, young and most beautiful love story.I really love this movie!
