Will the Oscars answer “Conclave’s” prayers?
Edward Berger’s mystery thriller has been one of the buzziest films to emerge from the fall festivals. Adapted from Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, the film premiered at Telluride, where it received raves from attendees. Since then, its awards prospects have grown, especially following its Audience Award wins at the Mill Valley and Middleburg fests. Those regional accolades helped propel future best picture nominees such as “American Fiction” (2023) and “Belfast” (2021) and best picture winner “Green Book” (2018). “Conclave” has popular appeal, but will its religious themes be an advantage or a potential hurdle in the Oscar race?

An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. Meanwhile Orlok’s servant, Knock (Alexander Granach), prepares for...

For Halloween, critics pick their most nightmarish baddies, from Count Orlok in Nosferatu to Annie Wilkes in Misery
You wouldn’t have Michael Myers if it weren’t for Billy from Black Christmas. We’re not talking casual inspiration here. According to director Bob Clark, John Carpenter asked him what he would do with a sequel to his now 50-year-old cult holiday horror pic. Clark responded that his killer who preys on assertive and sexually empowered young women would escape from an institution and return to town … on Halloween. A genre was born.

Justin Kurzel and Zack Baylin team up to create the American crime thriller The Order. The film is based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s 1989 nonfiction novel The Silent Brotherhood, which follows an FBI agent going after a white supremacist group called the Order. The gritty, intense, high-stakes action thriller stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult and Tye Sheridan. The Order played at the 2024 AFI Film Festival.
The Order Review
The Order is set in 1983 when an Idaho-based FBI agent follows a pattern of bank robberies, armored car heists, and counterfeiting operations terrorizing the Pacific Northwest. The agent sets out to prove that a radical leader named Bob Matthews is leading the charge, not a prototypical organized crime.
The heist-crime genre is by far one of my favorite movies. What Justin Kurzel captures within The Order is nothing short of spectacular. Several jaw-dropping moments throughout this film will haunt you because of the sheer,...

Finally, at long last, there’s a way to smell like Dracula.
That’s thanks to a new perfume inspired by the upcoming Robert Eggers film “Nosferatu,” a remake of the gothic tale about a terrifying vampire who stalks a haunted young woman. Heretic Parfum founder Douglas Little concocted the custom scent, also called Nosferatu, through a scientific process that involved viewing the film, historical research and “time period understanding,” according to a press release.
The result is one that answers the age-old question that’s long haunted historians: What does a vampire smell like?
Described as “cold, pale and pellucid” and evoking “the uneasy chill of encountering an apparition,” the fragrance aims to conjure the aroma of the dark, possibly smelly, spaces inhabited by Count Orlok himself. Dubbed “Eau de macabre,” the perfume captures the odor of the eternal being with “top notes of lilac and ambrette seed that...

James Wan has more than earned his inclusion in the pantheon of horror maestros. Over a 20-year career that started in 2004 with "Saw," Wan has mostly stayed true to the genre, making films about monsters human, ghostly and adorably parasitic (who doesn't love that ghastly cutie Gabriel from "Malignant"?). His films are fun, funny, and almost always terrifying in surprising ways (i.e. when he's not making superhero or action movies). Wan works an audience like a showman who's carefully studied the tricks of his predecessors, so when he makes a list of his favorite movies, you'd do well to add those titles to your viewing queue -- especially if you're an aspiring director yourself.
As a horror aficionado, Wan is also worth listening to when he breaks down his favorites by subgenre. Even if he's never knocked out a zombie flick or a werewolf movie, learning his preferences can...

Is Juror #2 Clint Eastwood”’s swan song?
“Who knows? He’s been saying that for a long time” exclaimed Eastwood’s longtime producer Tim Moore last night at the world premiere of the Warner Bros movie. Juror #2 was played the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as AFI Fest’s closing night film.
Moore continued, “At 94 years old, he’s still making films. I’ve been with him for 23 years. I always said I’d retire before he did and I haven’t retired yet.” Moore credits with Eastwood including the 4x Oscar winner’s highest grossing title, American Sniper ($547.6M) as well as The Mule, J. Edgar and more.
Juror #2 follows Nicholas Hoult as Justin Kemp, a recovering alcoholic-journalist who is awaiting his first child with his wife. He gets called to the jury of a murder trial in Georgia, and soon realizes he might be closer to the victim than originally realized.

Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2 is the fourth film he has debuted at the AFI Film Festival, joining J. Edgar, American Sniper, and Richard Jewell. The riveting courtroom drama was the festival’s closing night film. The star-studded cast is led by the reunion of Toni Collette and Nicholas Hoult, who shared the screen for the first time since the 2002 film About a Boy, who stars alongside J.K. Simmons and Chris Messina.

Juror #2 follows family man Justin Kemp, who is serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial and struggles with the moral dilemma where he could use his truth to sway the jury verdict to potentially convict or free an innocent man.

Clint Eastwood’s 42nd and possibly last film as director (hope not), Juror #2, also happens to be his best since American Sniper. At 94, this remarkable filmmaker not only still has it, he actually has it in spades over some half his age.
Delivering a classic courtroom drama — not a genre he has worked in much — Eastwood has made not just a riveting suspenseful thriller and family drama but also one with penetrating themes such as moral complexity and dealing with a crisis of conscience. It asks the question: What would you do in a similar circumstance but doesn’t answer that with easy solutions. It’s complicated, to say the least.
Eastwood, working with a fine original screenplay by Jonathan Abrams, has made one of the most compelling human dramas of his career, one that inevitably will resonate with smart adult audiences. You could hear a pin drop at Sunday...

Spooky season is here, which means it’s time for movies featuring all manner of ghouls, creeps, and monsters. And there may be no monster more famous than Count Dracula, the blood-sucking vampire introduced in Bram Stoker’s gothic horror novel Dracula. He’s appeared onscreen countless times in various iterations – far too many to list here. But here are a few notable Dracula adaptations to sink your teeth into this Halloween.

Vampires have fascinated filmmakers since the early days of cinema. Director F.W. Murnau’s 1922 Nosferatu is an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula. The movie was nearly lost to history when all copies were ordered destroyed after Stoker’s widow sued for copyright infringement. But a print survived, and the movie has gone on to become an influential classic. (The Witch director Robert Eggers’ remake is due out later this year.

While Universal was trying to figure out how to create their Dark Universe, over on Showtime, Penny Dreadful was already doing a fantastic job beating them to the punch. The series pulled together literary versions of Frankenstein’s monster, the wolfman, Dorian Gray, and eventually Dracula himself. Christian Camargo played Dr. Alexander Sweet in Season Three, who begins to seduce Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives. It is revealed later that this doctor is,...

The State of the Race
This season, the Academy shortlist for Best Original Score has expanded from 15 to 20 titles, and now up to three composers will be allowed to receive the Oscar. In terms of the race, “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) was ruled ineligible because composer Hans Zimmer used more than the allotted 20 percent of the pre-existing themes and music from his Oscar-winning “Dune” score. However, Zimmer is still very much in the race with his score for “Blitz” (Apple TV+).
Other fall/holiday contenders include “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix), “Gladiator II” (Paramount...

Filmmaker John Carpenter is set to receive the Career Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, it was announced on October 23. The west coast journos who make up Lafca will vote for the rest of this year’s winners on December 8, after which the awards will be presented on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Biltmore Hotel.

Lafca President Robert Abele said in a statement, “John Carpenter is such an ideal choice not only for his ability to spin stylish, prescient, genre-bending features of otherworldly menace and powerful emotion, but also because his glorious career happens to span our group’s 50-year existence. That strong connection starts with Lafca recognizing his horror prowess early on with our New Generation award in 1979 for his stone-cold classic Halloween. For over 100 years now, Nosferatu has been the ultimate cinematic vampire – or, ‘vampyr’, if you want to go really old-school – story. The crooked shadow of Fw Murnau's 1922 film still looms large over the genre, later reimagined by Werner Herzog in his 1979 Nosferatu. Even the making of Nosferatu still has its fangs in people, as fictionalised in 2000’s Shadow Of The Vampire, in which Willem Dafoe’s Max Schrek – the actor who played Count Orlok – turns out to actually be a vampire. All of which to say, Robert Eggers has big shoes to fill with his 2024 take on Nosferatu – conjuring a full-blooded vision of the classic story in all its gothic terror.
When it came to finding real-life locations befitting an ancient vampire’s lair, it was impossible not to reconnect with Nosferatu history. The gatehouse and courtyard of Count Orlok’s gaff in Eggers film was shot at Pernštejn...

Robert Eggers, the modern master of gothic horror, is at long last bringing his deep-and-dark passion project to theaters this, uh, Christmas!
The notion of remaking an all-time classic like F.W. Murnau's "Nosferatu" might sound utterly mad, but this kind of risk-taking is what we've come to expect from the man who gave us "The Witch," "The Lighthouse" and "The Northman." Eggers is a conjurer. He can tell a good, tight story, but you go to his movies to be seduced by whatever spell he's casting. And when it comes to "Nosferatu," judging from the spooky trailer it looks like we'll be getting a big ol' dollop of dread.
Authenticity is a key to Eggers approach, which is why he loves to shoot out in the elements as much as possible. With "Nosferatu," he's taking this commitment to tactile cinema further than many filmmakers have gone before -- specifically,...

As a rumour emerges that Christopher Nolan might be making a vampire horror next, we look at some unsettling moments from his earlier work.
The success of Oppenheimer was so unexpectedly huge that, if Christopher Nolan were to walk into a studio with a script about the making of decorative wall plates, executives would sign a cheque without asking too many questions.
Instead, one rumour rolling around is that Nolan has some sort of genre film in the works – according to the singularly intense YouTuber Grace Randolph, Nolan’s next project is in a similar “genre space” to movies coming out “in the next couple of months.” When a viewer on Randolph’s live stream asked whether it was some sort of horror film, Randolph replied, “That’s a good guess.”

Vampires are back in vogue it seems! Jordan are teaming up for vampire film Sinners, and one of this year's most popular horror movies, Abigail, was about a deadly vampire ballerina.
Now, it looks like Academy Award-winning director Christopher Nolan is looking to get in on the latest trend. The Oppenheimer director is coming off of a hot streak after his latest movie won seven Academy Awards and broke multiple box office records.

Could “Saturday Night” make the Best Picture Oscar lineup? What if Denzel Washington takes home No. 3 for “Gladiator II”? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
“Saturday Night” hardly lit the box office on fire last week after expanding into wide release, but could the Jason Reitman film resonate more with the industry? It’s a nostalgia-fueled crowd-pleaser with a crackling ensemble about an American pop culture institution. Plus, people in the industry know a thing or two about the stress and pressure of putting on a live TV and running up against red tape while trying to execute your vision. But could its inherent American-ness hinder it with international voters?

Back in 2015, it was announced that The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers (who was, at that time, had only made The Witch) was planning to remake F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). It took Eggers several years to get to Nosferatu, though, and we’ll finally have the chance to see his take on the concept when his movie reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th. About eight and half months after Eggers’ Nosferatu was first announced, we heard that filming had begun on a separate Nosferatu remake. Or, as the director referred to it, a remix. That was David Lee Fisher’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror… and that movie has now made its way out into the world! Fisher’s movie is available for purchase on Prime Video, going for the price of $4.99. It will also be released through Apple TV tomorrow,...

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

Acting has become a profession that everyone likes to try their hands on. This is not exclusive to those who wish to see themselves get famous, as some of the most successful names in the industry have tried their hands in a film or two. Naturally, the One Direction icon, Harry Styles, also joined this trend and has been starring in projects here and there.

He has been in many well-known projects, ranging from Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, Marvel’s Eternals, and most famously, Don’t Worry Darling. However, it would seem that these few projects weren’t enough for the actor. It was reported that the star was supposed to be a part of the remake of Nosferatu.
Thankfully, this was not seen through, and Nicholas Hoult ended up replacing the singer.

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which will be announced on December 17, 2024. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Visual Effects.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 97th Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” In 2022 this prize went to “Dune” while “Top Gun: Maverick” won in 2023. The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. Well, 2024 just got its new adorable mascot thanks to “The Legend of Ochi.”
The upcoming A24 indie fantasy adventure film teased a creature that looks eerily similar to Grogu Aka Baby Yoda-slash-“Gremlins” character Gizmo as a central figure in the coming-of-age tale.
Writer/director Isaiah Saxon makes his feature debut with “The Legend of Ochi” after helming music videos for Björk, Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, and Kanye West. Saxon is also the co-founder of the animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura.
“The Legend of Ochi” is based on Saxon’s own characters and screenplay. The film tells the story of a young girl (Helena Zengel) who runs away from home and learns to communicate with an elusive animal species known as Ochi, hence the title.
Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and A24 staple star Willem Dafoe round out the cast.

Ghosts are ubiquitous and zombies have had their moments of dominance, but of all the classic horror monsters, vampires have the strongest claim for the greatest film legacy. The vampire genre is nearly as old as cinema itself, with F.W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu” scaring up audiences in 1922, followed by the countless iterations that came in its shadow. Every era and every filmmaking country has since taken up its own spins on the myth of the vampire, from Universal Studios’ “Dracula” series beginning with Tod Browning’s Bram Stoker adaptation in 1931, all the way up to Iranian-American director Ana Lily Amirpour’s indie feminist twist “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” in 2014.
2024 has not exactly been a banner time for brilliant takes on the horror genre’s most iconic creatures of the night, with the most notable bloodsucking project to come out this calendar year being the fun but ultra-silly “Abigail.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

At The Streamable, we love watching movies and TV for free, especially if we don’t have to sit through ads. Tubi is great, but seeing an ad for car insurance in the middle of your movie tends to kill the vibe. As we race to Halloween, we looked up all the best scary movies and found that a huge number were streaming ad-free on Kanopy, which is free if your library participates. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hoopla is another free streamer that just added a major horror partner.
Your library probably partners with either Kanopy or Hoopla (or both!), giving you an unexpectedly great package of ad-free entertainment.
Use Kanopy for the Best Horror Selection
My jaw dropped when I saw how many A+ horror movies were available ad-free on Kanopy. You can see 48(!) of Metacritic’s best-reviewed horror films.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)
Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.
Among the other double dippers was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,...

Nine months of horror releases down, three to go! We’re officially in the “spooky season” portion of the year, the build-up to our favorite holiday, Halloween, and with our 2024 Fall Horror Movie Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the horror movies we can’t wait to check out in the remaining months of this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they might still show up at some point in 2024. Below, you’ll find a list of the movies we’re anxious to see this Halloween season and beyond… so, here we go:
Smile 2 – Theatrical, October 18

Two of the most popular horror films from the silent era are F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu from 1922 and director Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which was first released in 1920. So while Nosferatu gets a revival of sorts through Robert Eggers’ remake, which is set to reach theatres in December, and the Symphony of Horror “remix,” it seems fitting that The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is also getting some loving attention this year, as Kino Lorber is set to give the film a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release on October 22nd! This “authoritative edition” of the film features a meticulous 4K restoration by the F.W. Murnau Stiftung, along with a new orchestral score composed by Emmy winner Jeff Beal (House of Cards). Beal’s score had its premiere performance at Carnegie Hall on June 3rd… but if you want to try out the movie with different music,...
