Joan Didion was a hit at this year’s New York Film Festival, receiving a long standing ovation at a screening of “The Center Will Not Hold,” the documentary chronicling her life made by her nephew Griffin Dunne. But Didion can be thought of as the spiritual godmother of another great film at the festival — Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird.” The film opens with an epigraph from Didion: “Anyone who talks about California hedonism has never spent a Christmas in Sacramento.” “Lady Bird” is a fraught love letter to Sacramento, the hometown of Didion, Gerwig, and…not many others in a cultural sense.

I guess there are plenty of adults now too young to remember when Christopher Reeve made his debut as The Man of Steel. It was a massive hit across the full spectrum of moviegoers. Warners is taking good care of everyone’s favorite undocumented visitor from Planet Krypton, and has assembled two separate cuts of his big-screen premiere.

A legendary extended version of Superman: The Movie will finally get an official release.
I seriously never thought I would live to see this day. Long before home video was a collector's format, when a blockbuster hit the small screen, it was a big deal. And when ABC in the Us aired Superman: The Movie, it was a big enough deal that they split it across two nights.
Yes, you read that right. Superman: The Movie's unwieldy 143 minute runtime wouldn't fit neatly in a normal time slot, so the network's solution was to extend the film itself to 188 minutes and add enough commercials to pad out two different two hour timeslots. That TV cut has been legendarily bootlegged far and wide for as long as I've been on the internet. The best ones would take the available widescreen footage, which would then jarringly cut to an...

At Friday’s D23 confab in Anaheim, Disney touted its upcoming animation slate, revealing footage and details about “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2,” “Incredibles 2,” “Toy Story 4,” “Coco,” “Frozen 2,” and more.
Capping the animation presentation, the “Coco” grand finale featured more than 160 performers who descended upon Hall D23 at the Anaheim Convention Center, including the Grammy-winning Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea and Ballet Folklorico de Los Angeles under the direction of Kareli Montoya, and the Grammy-winning Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band.
Wreck-It Ralph Goes Viral
In “Wreck-It Ralph 2” (November 21, 2018), directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston (“Zootopia”), Ralph (John C.Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) go viral on the Internet to find a spare part to fix her broken Sugar Rush game. Along the way, they meet Yesss (“Empire’s” Taraji P. Henson), an algorithm for the site BuzzAholic, dressed in blue.

AnimationFix: Your regular round-up of the latest animation news, from HitFix reporter Emily Rome Moonbot Studios released their latest animated short online this week, and it’s a sweet ode to imagination and forever being a child at heart. The five-minute short, Taking Flight, is also a tribute to Antonio Pasin, inventor of the Radio Flyer wagon and depicts a small boy’s boring day that turns into an adventure spent with his grandfather. It’s cute, and it has a timely if oft-heard message urging kids (and adults!) to stop looking at their screens all the time and get outside. But the film falls short of the creativity and unique charm of Moonbot’s first short, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, an ode to the power of story and a tale of renewal inspired by the destruction left by Hurricane Katrina. That short, which used a hybrid of stop-motion,...

"You know, that wagon used to be your dad's. What say we take it out for a spin?" Well, now this is just wonderful. Brandon Oldenburg has made a short film called Taking Flight that is inspired by the life and heritage of Antonio Pasin, the Italian inventor of the Radio Flyer wagon. The short tells the story of a boy named Tony who spends the day with his grandpa Nonno and ends up going on an unexpected adventure. There's a really beautiful blend of animation styles in this, along with some lovely music to top it off. This reminds me a bit of that movie Radio Flyer from my youth, where two kids build a Radio Flyer wagon that actually flies. This is also just an outstanding original short worth five minutes of your time to watch. Enjoy. Description from Vimeo: "Taking Flight is a short film inspired by...

Short films stand tall in southern California every year at the Palm Springs International Shortfest — after over 4,000 submissions, 327 shorts from over 50 countries were shown this past week at North America’s largest short film festival. The winners of this year’s festival, announced Sunday night, received combined prizes valued at approximately $115,000 with $20k of that being in cash.
“A common thread of immigration and compassion dominates our award winning films this year – echoing current issues around the world,” said Festival Director Helen du Toit. “After a stimulating and energizing week of storytelling and networking between the next generation of filmmakers, we leave with a sense of hope for a world that, despite some setbacks, does seem to be evolving slowly but surely.”
