A Mess
LLgoatJ21 June 2021
This film is about three young guys, all who had bad childhoods, going on a rampage. It started out well but quickly went down hill and ended up a bit of a mess.

The story was hard to follow. The characters weren't particularly likeable, even with their child hardships revealed. It didn't really feel realistic. I also didn't really understand the Grand Theft Auto graphics and fantasy scenes. They seemed like an afterthought and didn't really fit in and seemed quite random. The film would have been much better without them. Although it is a good idea and done properly and throughout the film could have worked.

Overall it was a good story and idea made into a complete mess. It just gets worse as it goes on. By the last 30mins I wasn't really paying attention. I wouldn't waste your time.

Without sense
isaacochoterena17 March 2022
This movie fails to give a good story, even though it portrays some problems in society.

The problem with this film is the script, since there is no defined story, there is no conflict to resolve, there is a lack of character development, sometimes it seems that the actors just say random words. The direction doesn't help much as it doesn't clearly expose everything it wants to say. The performances are decent, but not surprising, it seems that it is just a montage of scenes that wants to show some problems in society. Some topics that are touched on, but very superficially, are that the teachings of our parents and the experiences of childhood are what will shape us when we will became adults and will be reflected in our personality and in our actions, also talks about delinquency and society's rejection of certain young people who had a hard childhood. The movie also has flashbacks that lead nowhere and an ending that is confusing and makes no sense.

The lack of focus of this film causes it to be completely ruined by not being clear about the story to be told, just as the situations that occur are very uncomfortable to watch and very difficult to digest, it is a bad film but not because of the actors and actresses that are part of it, it is a bad film because of the poor script and bad direction that ruins any good idea in the movie.

The ratings are exaggerated...
Candib13321 February 2022
Hyperbole to say the least. I saw this movie pop up on Hulu and I added it to my watchlist when I saw the cast (Kelvin Harrison, Jacob Latimore, Jonathan Majors, Terrence Howard). Then, I looked it up on IMDb, because I'm that person and was appalled to see a rating of 1.4. I have never seen a movie have such a low rating. Ever. So I purposely watched it in hopes of disproving those opinions. And while it was not an Academy Award nom by any means, it wasn't that bad. Not necessarily good, but definitely not that bad. Also, the synopses are trash as well, because there was little to no drug use at all, just a few references, so maybe do better there as well. The movie is about three friends in the inner city of LA that are all going through their own struggles. One struggle overshadows the other, for (somewhat) obvious reasons. The friends decide they will take it upon themselves to fix said problem, and it kind of unravels from there. If anything, the worst part of the movie is the gaping plot holes throughout. Also, a number of characters weren't needed and those that were never had any real development so you're left confused more often than not by some of their actions. Even still, I've seen worse movies and there's no way this deserves a 1.4. I encourage you to watch for yourself and go into it knowing that even though some people didn't care for it, you very well could. I have not rated a movie on IMDb in literal years, but I couldn't just let people trash this movie when there are far worse getting praise on a regular basis.

Heard Haters?
Astaroth2221 March 2022
I am a huge Kelvin Harrison Jr. Fan, and while I think they wasted his talents placing him in this role, there's no way I believe this movie deserves its current rating [1.4]. The bottom line is that its an average movie: Not especially good but certainly not bad either. I'm guessing the Amber Heard haters are out in full force here since it seems to be almost a religion nowadays. Not sure what that's all about but hammering this movie because of it is unfair to everyone else involved.

Messy movie with insanely bad acting
Misterdeex19 July 2021
I have rarely seen movies that I dislike from start to end. This one is a prime example in that category and I hope I never have to see it again.

I find it unbelievable how many bad ratings this film has! It covers mental health and abuse.some of the acting isn't the best but then some of the acting is really good.i think most of the bad rating were given by people expecting menace 2 society or something.i enjoyed it.

Hard Story To Tell
netta-6773414 November 2021
I enjoyed the movie & the acting. It's unfortunate that some people don't watch the movies that they review on here. You can tell by them describing things that NEVER occurred in the movie. Is it based on who's on the poster?🤔 The story was a sad, hard one that needed to be told. Our Childhood trauma can lead us to destruction if we don't have it addressed properly. Also, MONITOR YOUR CHILDREN!

Worst movie ever
msmith-816176 September 2021
There needs to be a zero star rating, if there is a worse movie then this, the cia could use it in place of water boarding. How was this funded. Worst acting i've had to endure.

What On Earth Did I Just Watch
daddygracenyc29 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I came across this movie on Epix by accident and I decided to watch it because Jacob Latimore is in this movie. After the first 10 minutes of this film, I became disgusted and ashamed at how black males are mostly portrayed in a negative way on television and the big screen. I wish I could have given the movie a 0 due to it's not being a good movie.

I was confused by the character, Jesse. I didn't know if he was deaf and he never spoken in life. I didn't understand the storyline of a white man kidnaping him and molesting him while he was married living in another location with his wife and children. There were so many unanswered questions in this movie regarding to the character Jesse and who's house was he living in because the white man appeared not to live there. Please don't waste your time watching this garbage of a movie.

Lazy acting
traceytak6 November 2021
The acting is very lazy, no emotion, not much effort as if the director just said ad-lib what you want it doesn't really matter.. The storyline is pretty much 3 guys doing what 3 guys normally do in a run down part of town. Even the violence and sex are not anything different to what has been done before and it's easily watchable on autopilot without taking in what has been watched because it really didn't make any difference to the story. The music is just the same old sound that accompanies this same old drama that gets told again and again and inevitably just becomes the normal easily switched off and forget about it film. A good film needs to have impact to everyone. The low scores demonstrate this film has no impact which is a shame as in a good story that has the viewer engrossed in what will happen next, some of these actors could really shine.

Boring
michaelaajohnson1 September 2021
The dialogue was awful, the acting even worse. Terrence Howard is always a delight but the rest of the cast fell flat. Visually, the film is lacking as well which is a disappointment as that was one of the biggest pulls for me to see it.

I enjoyed this movie. A lot was being said but not in a way I think the majority of people will appreciate. The acting was awesome

Thank you to all those involved. You made something amazing and its tragic that it's not appreciated more. Damn good!

No idea how this is rated soooo low
collincb7 March 2022
It's a good movie. There's absolutely no reason for it to be rated in the 1s. The acting is good. The story is good. I honestly think people were payed to rate this low. It honestly makes no sense. Watch the movie. I probably miss you it's worth it.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Gully
burlesonjesse55 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"I'm already dead". Yeah and so is the 2019 film Gully, dead on arrival. The Hughes Brothers called and guess what, they said they want their OE back.

Anyhow the definition of Gully is a ravine formed by the action of water. So OK, what the heck does Gully's title have to do with three young thugs acting a fool in rundown LA? Um, nothing really. Gully is basically Menace II Society for dummies, Boyz n the Hood without the heart, and Juice with um, rank juice. 84 minutes is the running time and there's no sense of tenor, no sense of tone. Like the ghetto birds featured in Gully, those minutes just fly by.

Gully's director (Nabil Elderkin) has basically done music videos his entire career. Here he uses numerous flashbacks, overheads, random narration, and palm tree-d shots of Los Angeles to establish his thin, tangled narrative. It's all cut so sporadically, not giving the viewer any sort of footing or anyone to root for let alone feel any sympathy. Basically Elderkin feels the need to shoot another song integration where we have to figure out the story amidst the scorch. Dude, you can only be a showy, hot dog man for so long.

Gully stars unknowns Kevin Harrison Jr, Jacob Latimore, and Charlie Plummer. There are also bit parts from known actors like John Corbett, Robin Givens, and Terrence Howard. No one is exactly likable, all talking roughneck, committing violent, malefactor acts, and having questionable, principled behavior. I mean it doesn't really matter when all these characters just fade in and out right? And when the film ends abruptly like a dangled loose end, will anyone involved resonate? Nope. We never eventually get accustomed to woe is me hooligans on the come-down. "Defile" is a more fitting title than Gully.
