KollywoodVetrimaaran’s critically acclaimed film Visaranai (2015) was probably the first Tamil film to look at custodial violence in unflinching detail, a change from narratives that routinely glorified it.In Vetrimaaran’s hard-hitting film Viduthalai Part 1, released on March 31, a senior police officer calmly asks for cutting pliers. He then proceeds to pull out the nails of the Adivasi man in his custody, asking him for information that the latter says he doesn’t have. When he doesn’t get what he wants, the officer asks for the man’s daughter-in-law to be brought into the room and stripped. ReviewVetrimaaran makes several noteworthy cinematic choices, but as a director who seems intent on being taken as a serious political commentator, his own politics still leaves a lot to be desired.Deep in a mountainous jungle, an armed people’s movement is at war with the police. The state apparatus is scrambling to identify the mysterious leader of this movement — Makkal Padai (People’s Army) — who goes by the moniker Vaathiyar. The authorities don’t even know what he looks like. A young police constable (PC) is transferred to one of these remote outposts, setting him on a collision course with powerful men. Director Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai - Part 1 seems set to tell a gritty political tale led by an actor few would have expected in such a serious and complex role. When the cast for Viduthalai was announced, most Tamil movie watchers were surprised to see Soori in the lead.

The script is based on Chandra Kumar’s fact-based novel “Lock Up” and is actually split in two distinct parts, to the point that if it was not for the same main characters, we could easily discuss about two different movies. In the first one Pandi, Murugan, Afzal, and Kumar are Tamil laborers who are working in Guntur, and living in a nearby park, with no roof under their heads, while working odd jobs to make ends meet.

The subject is being hotly discussed following the custodial deaths of father-son duo Jayaraj and Bennix in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. The directors, having made award-winning films like Visaaranai and Shahid, spoke in great detail about the implications of portraying power and vigilante justice on screen. Indian cinema for years has glorified and placed the police on a pedestal. Films like Suriya’s Singam franchise and Kaakha Kaakha, Ranveer Singh’s Simmba, Rani Mukerji’s Mardani and several others have more or less suggested that the only way to justice is the cop’s justice. Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl wins Queer Lion
Veteran director Marco Bellocchio’s Blood Of My Blood (Sangue Del Mio Sangue) has won the Fipresci Award at the 72nd Venice Film Festival (Sept 2-12).
The film is a vampire-themed period drama starring Alba Rohrwacher, who won last year’s Volpi prize for best actress with her performance in Hungry Hearts, as a 17th-century noblewoman who becomes a nun and seduces a young army officer and his twin brother. The film is sold by The Match Factory.
Venice’s ‘Collateral Awards’ - prizes assigned independently by film critics and cultural associations - also saw the Queer Lion Award go to Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne as Danish artist Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sexual reassignment surgery.
The film, which receives its North American premiere at Toronto tonight (Sept 12), is a hot contender for the upcoming awards season.
