The many lives of cats will be put to the test in Feral, a new horror comic book from Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner.
The duo are the creators of the Stray Dogs, a surprise hit that took a cute and cuddly approach to subvert the serial killer genre, like a Lady and the Tramp meets Silence of the Lambs. That mini-series, released in 2021, has sold nearly one million copies across all formats, according to Image Comics, the publisher behind the titles, and Paramount picked up the movie rights for an animated adaptation to be produced by It screenwriter Gary Dauberman.
Feral also takes the cute and cuddly approach to flip a genre, in this case the zombie outbreak trope. Think The Aristocats meet The Walking Dead.
“We didn’t want to repeat ourselves with this follow up book so it really was, at first, thinking about: Ok, Stray Dogs...

Miami-based FiGa Films has picked up worldwide sales on Andrés Kaiser’s found-footage doc “Time Theorem” (“Teorema de Tiempo”), which will have its world premiere at Dok.Fest München on May 8.
Doc will also receive a market screening at the Cannes Marché du Film on May 18.

Fernando Díaz’s Machaco Films and Roxana Ramos’ Aramos Cine have partnered to set up a joint venture: La Puerta Roja, focused on horror and fantasy movies as well as working with prominent genre directors from Ibero-America. Both companies are based in Buenos Aires.
The idea sprang from Machaco and Aramos’s co-production partnership on Demian Rugna’s next project “When Evil Lurks.” Machaco had already produced Rugna’s “Terrified,” awarded at the Austin Fantastic Fest among a flurry of international kudos, and whose remake rights were acquired by Guillermo del Toro.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “American Horror Stories” Season 1, Episode 6, “Feral,” streaming now on FX on Hulu.
The penultimate episode of “American Horror Stories” took a look at the classic horror trope of “something terrifying is lurking in the woods.” It followed a family on a weekend camping trip led by a father, Jay, played by Aaron Tveit. Yes, he was back in a different role than Adam in the “Rubber(wo)man” two-part premiere.
Jay said the trip was about “experiencing nature,” but the show definitely took that to the extreme. The first scene of his family in the car driving out to the national park already implied something was off about his 3-year-old son, Jacob (Colin Tandberg), which in hindsight was obviously done on purpose.
But anyway, at the campground, the family’s site was in the very back of the area,...

I’ve known author Matt Serafini for well over a decade now, and it’s been fun to watch his career evolve as he blazed his path as a writer in the world of horror fiction. Serafini’s first novel, the werewolf-centered Feral, was published back in 2012, and since then, he’s published a handful of other projects, including Under the Blade, Ocean Grave, Rites of Extinction, Island Red and Devil’s Row (Feral #2).
And since we’re celebrating authors all this week for Indie Horror Month, I thought this would be the perfect time to catch up Serafini to talk about the evolution of his writing career, the inspirations behind a few of his different novels, his love of slashers, and more.
Can you start by talking about the transition of writing about film online and in various magazines to embarking on a career as a horror fiction writer?...

“Kapaemahu” would make history as the first Native Hawaiian animated short to be nominated for the Oscar. But it’s an important transgender breakthrough as well. The eight-minute 2D short tells the long-forgotten story about the four stones on Waikiki Beach placed as tribute to four legendary mahu (third gender individuals), who brought the healing arts from Tahiti to Hawaii in the 15th century.
“Kapaemahu,” directed by Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, a Native Hawaiian teacher and mahu, along with Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson, couldn’t be timelier with this indigenous transgender tribute, bolstered by an exquisite hand-drawn aesthetic from animation director Daniel Sousa (the Oscar-nominated short “Feral”). The story demonstrates the healing powers of the Kapaemahu, the suppression and burial of their monuments, their recovery at the end of the 20th century, and the renewed interest in their legacy today. The short is available on The Criterion Channel and also for free on Vimeo.

Contrary to her movie’s title, the protagonist in “Feral” hardly fits any indigent stereotype: She’s young, attractive, kempt, modishly dressed, in fact by all appearances rather closer to the cliché of the college-educated, gentrifying if still “quirky” Brooklyn hipster. No one would guess that Annapurna Sriram’s Yasmine is homeless, a deceiving appearance that’s one of the few things she has left to turn to her advantage.
This first narrative feature by cinematographer and documentarian Andrew Wonder is an intriguingly offbeat character sketch that falls somewhere short of a fully-rounded portrait. Nonetheless, his arresting subject matter and refined aesthetic make for a promising debut worthy of discerning viewers’ attention. After a year’s festival-circuit travel, it’s getting a VOD release on June 2.

Los Cabos — “The Twentieth Century,” Matthew Rankin’s crazed retelling of Canadian history, won the main Los Cabos Competition this Saturday, beating out a prestige lineup of some of the most notable festival standouts of the year.
The win at Los Cabos, whose competition is focused on movies from the U.S., Mexico and Canada, adds to “The Twentieth Century’s” Toronto Best Canadian First Feature prize for a feature made with high style, shot like 1940s melodrama, with a box-like Academy ratio.
Mexico Primero, a showcase of first or second-time Mexican features, was won by “The Dove and the Wolf,” the feature debut of Carlos Lenin, which world premiered at this year’s Locarno Film Festival in Filmmakers of the Present. A young couple love story, “The Dove and the Wolf” is distinguished by its context, a grimy small town assailed by cartel violence, and its unyielding use of...

Mexico City — A crossroads for the film industries of Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival opens its doors on Wednesday, Nov. 13 with a lineup which takes on board hot-button issues – gender, violence in Mexico, the impact of global platforms – as the Festival consolidates its status as a Mexican new talent platform. 10 Takes on the 2019 edition:
1.Robert De Niro, Gaston Pavlovich And ’The Irishman’
Robert De Niro will attend Los Cabos’ Film Festival’s Opening Ceremony on Wednesday for a gala screening of “The Irishman.” The movie’s presence at Los Cabos can be seen as part thanks to its cinematographer. Mexico’s Rodrigo Prieto, and above all to its Mexican producer, Gastón Pavlovich. Already producer of Martin Scorsese’s “Silence,” who stuck with “The Irishman,” through thick and thin as it turned from a Paramount/Stx movie to an Oscar-contending Netflix original.

In 2018 Mexican director Andrés Kaiser’s debut feature “Feral” premiered and impressed at the Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival – notching a hat trick of awards including Art Kingdom Best Film, Fipresci Best Mexican film and México Primero best film – before embarking on an international, year-long festival run.
While visiting Madrid, where he studied at the prestigious Ecam film school, Kaiser shared details on his follow-up feature “Precious Blood,” which will similarly head to Los Cabos and pitch in the festival’s Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund Films in Development Stage sidebar.
“Precious Blood” takes place in 18th century Mexico, and follows a priest sent to investigate a series of exceptional murders which have taken place inside one of the church’s convents.
The only surviving witness, a nun being held as part of the investigation, claims to be in direct contact with the devil who is subjecting her to nightmarish visions.

Both the 1980s TV series Beauty and the Beast and the new feature film Us have presented very different ideas of what lies in the tunnels under our urban feet. It's not just subway tunnels and sewers; it could be strange monsters; humans gone mad; government experiments and who knows what else while we walk ignorant above. A new feature film Feral is a different angle on this parallel-existing world; definitely more of the social realism perspective, it seeks to show us some of the real lives of those who live in strange place, their struggles outside a system that gives them no quarter, and what bonds can be made and broken within. Below we have the poster and some stills from the film,...

‘Tigerland’ Review: Harrowing and Essential Doc Follows Tigers and Those Fighting For Their Survival
You’ll have to wait a while before “Tigerland” introduces its eponymous stars, but like many elements of Ross Kauffman’s emotional, often harrowing new documentary, the eventual reveal will be worth it. The “E-Team” and “Born Into Brothels” filmmaker has always been concerned with shining a light on those in need of help (or common decency), and for his third feature, Kauffman turns his interest toward a threatened animal population and the humans trying to save them. While “Tigerland” takes some time to find its footing, kicking off with an odd kid-voiced monologue that attempts to spell out the historical meaning of the tiger and then looping together two seemingly different stories, Kauffman eventually finds connections that go far beyond the superficial.
Still, it’s the tigers that bind everything, and when Kauffman finally reveals one out in the wild — after plenty of gazing at dusty paw prints, squinting through brush,...

Andrés Kaiser’s found-footage thriller “Feral,” a Fipresci and Best Mexican Feature winner after its world premiere at the Los Cabos Film Festival, has been picked up by U.K. sales company One Eyed Films in the run-up to this year’s Ventana Sur.
A participant at last year’s Ventana Sur Blood Window and Impulso Morelia works in progress sections, the feature is an isolated Oaxaca mountain cabin in the woods-set mockumentary which mixes found footage and witness interviews to tell the story of a defrocked clergyman who lives with three “savage” children he discovered chained in a nearby cave.
“We think that documentaries are real,” explained Kaiser. “That they have nothing to do with fiction. This perception of genre is the mechanism by which ‘Feral’ projects the most hidden horror of the human species: the deep ocean of chaos and darkness that awaits after the encounter with our wild essence.

Los Cabos, Mexico — Adding to its burgeoning best picture trophies, “Genesis,” the consecration of Quebec’s Philippe Lesage, won Los Cabos Competition Award Saturday night.
“Genesis” scored at a busy Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival, given star gravitas by Spike Lee, Adam Driver and Terry Gilliam and whose hard-driving industry news flow, especially from the robust young Mexican industry belied Los Cabos initial positioning as a post-afm chill out.
Following on Lesage’s debut, “The Demons,” “Genesis” marks “Another rewardingly complex reflection on the emotional trials of youth,” Variety announced in its Locarno review. Superbly acted by Théodore Pellerin and Noe Abita, the chronicle of an ebullient brother and sister’s suffering from machista disdain and aggression was always a frontrunner at Los Cabos.
Otherwise, the other big competition winner – and doing its foreign-language Oscar nomination credentials no harm at all – was Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s Colombian thriller...

Mexico City — Los Cabos Film Festival’s Mexico Primero section is intended to encourage and promote both up-and-coming and against-the-grain Mexican filmmakers.
Five films make up this year’s edition of Mexico Primero, spanning from intimate indie dramas to thrillers to fantasy and horror. Each film offers something unique to the slate, while sharing an almost mystical and auteur commonality. It’s safe to say that Mexico Primero is a singular competition in the world of Mexican cinema.
“Faust” is produced by Andrea Bussmann and famed Mexican director Nicolás Pereda, and directed by Bussmann herself, one of the only two female directors of Mexican films in main competitions at Los Cabos. The film already won her a special jury prize at Locarno’s Filmmakers of the Present. A modern, very Mexican, take on the traditional tale of good and evil, the story is told in a ‘70s style mocumentary format...

The only Mexican film at this year's Fantastic Fest was Andrés Kaiser’s debut feature length film, Feral, which uses fake documentary and found footage formats to delve into a tragedy that took place in the late 1980s. It officially ended with several unanswered issues, the central questions being: who exactly were the man and the three infants who perished due to a fire that broke out in their house located in a wooded area of Oaxaca, Mexico? And what was the cause of the catastrophe? More than showing us a disconcerting found footage, something typical within the horror genre, Kaiser presents his film as an investigative documentary, focusing on a series of interviews with people who knew Juan Felipe de Jesús González (Hector Illanes), the...

Fantastic Fest 2018 is now about a month away, so it's time for the second wave of programming, which includes the North American premiere of Timo Tjahjanto's May the Devil Take You and the U.S. premieres of David Gordon Green's Halloween and Jeremy Saulnier's Hold the Dark. I'm probably most curious, though, about the world premieres in this round, including Bloodline, The Boat, Feral, Girls With Balls, Savage and Starfish. Will they emerge as unexpected discoveries in the midst of genre goodness from better-known filmmakers? Or disappear into the night? I hope for the former, but we shall see. The festival will be held in Austin, Texas, from September 20-27. Visit the official site for more information. Below is a list of the films in...

Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is flying well below forecasts, heading for a Memorial Day weekend launch of around $110 million domestically, early estimates showed Friday.
The four-day figure is significantly under the studio’s recent estimates in the $130 million to $150 million range at 4,380 North American locations. First-day grosses are coming in at about $32 million — including $14.1 million from previews, which set a Memorial Day weekend record.
Should the holiday estimate hold for “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” it will raise questions about franchise fatigue and Disney’s strategy of opening the tentpole a mere five months after “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” debuted on Dec. 16. “The Last Jedi” debuted impressively with $220 million in North America, and went on to earn $620 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide.

Disney’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” has launched domestically with an impressive $14.1 million on Thursday night — a Memorial Day weekend record.
The tentpole has been forecast to lift off with $130 million to $150 million at 4,380 sites during the four-day Memorial Day weekend.
The preview number exceeds the previous $13.2 million record held by “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” in 2007. It’s slightly behind the $14.5 millions from “Thor: Ragnarok” which finished the three-day weekend with $122.7 million in November.
“Solo” follows Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, who befriends his future co-pilot and Wookiee companion Chewbacca, and meets the gambler Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover). Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Paul Bettany, Joonas Suotamo, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge round out the cast.

For the first time in weeks, superheroes won’t wear the crown at the domestic box office.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” is looking to lift off with $130 million to $150 million at 4,380 locations over Memorial Day weekend. While that is down significantly from tracking earlier in May that suggested the film would open between $165 million and $175 million, some are still projecting the “Star Wars” prequel could make as much as $180 million over the four-day holiday weekend.

Directed by Mark H. Young (Wicked Blood, Tooth and Nail), Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive clip from the horror-thriller Feral, on VOD and in limited theaters May 25th from IFC Midnight. The footage is extraordinarily bloody as a feral creature takes a bite out of a woman’s neck, which results in blood spraying all over the place! In Feral, starring Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob […]...

“You’re living the dream, Dp!”
In a film full of highlights and standout moments, Karan Soni’s Dopinder arguably stood head and shoulders above the rest as Deadpool‘s true breakout star.
Back in 2016, Dopinder was little more than a vengeful taxi driver who befriends the Merc With a Mouth once the bullets start flying, and it was the at-times effortless chemistry between Soni and Ryan Reynolds that had fans falling in love with Dopinder. He’s since gone on to become the Merc’s trusty getaway driver, of course, and that’s exactly where things pick up in Deadpool 2, the David Leitch-directed sequel that’s now on the verge of its primetime release on May 18th.
Ahead of that, though, Fox is ramping up the marketing machine and have today delivered a brand new promo which you can watch up above. Unsurprisingly, it places the spotlight on the aforementioned Dopinder,...

You’ve heard about Dawn of Justice, but what about the dawn of the X-Force?
Granted, that’s not the official title of Fox and David Leitch’s Deadpool sequel, but considering how Wade Wilson is about to assemble a posse of superpowered mutants, each more bizarre and quirky than the last, ‘Deadpool 2: Dawn of the X-Force’ would be a pretty apt title for what is undoubtedly the second must-see comic book movie of 2018 after Avengers: Infinity War.
But of course, this is just the beginning of the aforementioned team, as the upcoming sequel will likely act as something of a springboard as Fox begins to expand its mutant universe. An expansion that will, of course, include, Drew Goddard’s X-Force. Pre-production is just now getting underway on the ensemble movie ahead of its October start date, by which point Goddard and his team will be directing a “Black Ops...

"You don't understand what's coming... you have no idea." IFC Midnight has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Feral, from horror director Mark Young. The film is about a group of students who fight to survive a weekend in the woods when they suddenly start falling prey to a horrifying virus that turns them into rabid, rampaging cannibal-zombies. The script for this film is co-written by Adam Frazier, who also writes reviews for the site. Feral stars Scout Taylor-Compton, Olivia Luccardi, Lew Temple, Renee Olstead, Brock Kelly, Landry Allbright and George Finn. This looks freaky and cool, almost like a fun mashup between Evil Dead and It Comes at Night and a few other forest horror films. Watch out. Here's the new official trailer (+ posters) for Mark Young's Feral, direct from YouTube: Your best friend has just been infected with a horrifying virus that will...

Long time Quiet Earth readers may remember me gushing over Mark H. Young's indie post-apocalyptic cannibal flick, Tooth and Nail some years ago (review). Well it appears the director is back with an entirely new kind of cannibal flick out soon from IFC Midnight! It's been a while, but it's good to see Young is back.
Here's what Feral is about:
