Unfolding as a well-rounded miniseries, Netflix's 1992 keeps viewers on their toes with its gripping mysteries and investigative drama. One of the most intriguing characters in 1992 is an enigmatic criminal named the Flamethrower killer. For obvious reasons, his name stems from his modus operandi of killing as he uses a flamethrower to burn his victims to death. However, instead of randomly targeting innocents, the killer only focuses on a specific set of people, suggesting that he is driven by a strong sense...

Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Netflix's 1992.

Netflix's 1992 introduces one twist after another to finally reveal the truth behind the central murders and Fernando Victoria's connection to them in its ending moments. Created by Jorge Guerricaechevarría, Netflix's 1992 focuses on a widow, Amparo, and an alcoholic ex-cop, Richi, who form an unlikely alliance to solve the mystery behind a series of murders. Amparo puts her life on the line and sets out to solve the mystery because she believes her husband's death was not accidental.

Zoë Kravitz’s ‘Blink Twice’ #1 on PVOD After Only Reaching #4 in Theaters
Image
“Blink Twice” (Amazon MGM), actress Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut with Channing Tatum as a tech billionaire who invites a cocktail waitress to his private island, was a modest performer in theaters last month. Its opening weekend only reached #4 at the box office, earning $7 million, with the full run amounting to $22 million.

Flash forward a few weeks, and it is #1 for its debut week in PVOD. It jumped to the top even as three other new releases (all weaker performers) also made at least one of the two top 10 lists below.

Netflix continues to find appeal for its recent originals, with four films in its top five. These though were trumped by “The Garfield Movie,” the latest Sony release to transition to the streamer four months after release. Azazel Jacobs’ “His Three Daughters” (premiering at Toronto Film Festival last year and garnering an excellent 84 Metacritic score) is top among...

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Beats ‘Transformers One’ in Unexpectedly Tight Box Office Race
Image
Optimus Prime and Megatron put up a fight, but in the end, the robots were no match for everyone’s favorite bio-exorcist.

After an unusually close box office race, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” emerged victorious over newcomer “Transformers One” to retain the No. 1 spot for three consecutive weekends. The spooky Warner Bros. sequel added a strong $26 million from 4,172 theaters, bringing its tally to $225 million domestically and $329.7 million globally.

Meanwhile, “Transformers One” kicked off behind expectations with $25 million from 3,978 venues. It’s a meager start for Paramount and Hasbro’s animated movie, which cost $75 million and was targeting a start of $30 million to $40 million. It only brought in $14 million internationally for a worldwide total of $39 million. Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson lead the voice cast of “Transformers One,” the franchise’s first theatrical animated film since 1986’s “The Transformers: The Movie.” That film was a box office disappointment, though its...

Summer Ends with a Whimper, with ‘Reagan’ the Best of Tepid New Releases
Image
In recent years, Labor Day weekend’s reputation as a box office dead zone has been upended by strong showings from films like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “The Equalizer 3.” Unfortunately, for 2024, standard perception prevails with a predictably lackluster showing.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) opens next week to a projected $100 million+ debut, starting what looks like an improved rest of the year compared to the final four months in 2023. For now, it’s tread water time, with the late summer’s best doing best (and in some cases holding extremely well).

The weekend’s total of $86 million was down only $6 million from last year despite the boost from the Denzel Washington sequel ($35 million). Key was the sustained strength of previously top titles. Still #1 “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) fell only 17 percent ($15 million), now about $600 million. Two Universal hits already on PVOD did even better. #5 “Twisters” actually...

Ray Liotta's Final Movie Debuts With 93% Audience Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
1992, Ray Liotta's last movie, has arrived, and it will end his career with praise. The actor was known for his performances in Field of Dreams, Hannibal, Goodfellas, and more. He died suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep at 67 years old in 2022. He was working on the production for Dangerous Waters and never lived to see it finished. He has had several movies released after his death, including an edited version of Cocaine Bear. His final movie tells the stories of two small families living through the 1992 LA riots.

With 1992 finally in theaters, audiences had the opportunity to see Liotta's final performance, and the response has been nothing but praise. With a 94% score on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, it has earned a Hot designation, represented by a full and upright bucket of popcorn. The critics were less favorable, though still offered a 67% Tomatometer score. Both scores are positive, but the 27% difference is stark.

‘1992’ Review: Tyrese Gibson and Ray Liotta Star in a Gutsy, Unexpected Heist Drama
Image
There are moments in Ariel Vroman’s historical drama-heist thriller “1992” that speak volumes, but one that stands out comes from the late Ray Liotta. “1992” was the actor’s last film, and his performance is first rate and terrifying.

Liotta plays Lowell, a safecracker about to steal millions of dollars in precious metals from a factory on April 29, 1992: the day the Los Angeles Uprising began. As the streets fill with righteous anger and windows shatter and fires burn, this career criminal and abusive father, literally en route to commit a felony, looks out at the Black people raging against generations of injustice and — oblivious to any irony — declares that their grievance “doesn’t give them the right to do this. That’s other people’s property.”

Calling a heist movie something like “1992” is a gutsy move, because it tells the world that you’re not just making...

1992 Review — Tyrese Gibson Effortlessly Carries This Heist Thriller
Image
The heist movie genre has seen many films set in different places. Ben Affleck’s The Town was set in the middle of a Red Sox game, Oceans Eleven heist was during a boxing match in a casino, and the latest from Lionsgate 1992 puts a heist in the middle of the Rodney King Verdict protests. The Tyrese Gibson-led film sees him play Mercer, a fresh out-of-jail employee who finds himself and his son in the middle of a heist.

1992 Review

I remember seeing this trailer at the end of last year and being intrigued by the premise. Heist movies are one of my favorite genres, and if done right, they can be instant classics. With 1992 set amid the uprising protests post-Rodney King verdict, the film’s tone is strong and has an unwavering message that is heartbreaking at its core.

It’s both daring and insane to deliver...

Suicide Squad Star Scott Eastwood Talks Future Superhero Roles And #ReleaseTheAyerCut Support (Exclusive)
Image
Suicide Squad was released in August 2016, just a few short months after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit theaters. Zack Snyder's movie had a huge opening weekend (despite negative reviews), but a shocking second-weekend drop sent Warner Bros. into panic mode.

As a result, Suicide Squad received a drastic overhaul with the addition of colourful graphics, catchy pop songs, and a "happy ending" in place of the original, much darker dynamic between The Joker and Harley Quinn.

While the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement has never been quite as popular as #ReleaseTheSnyderCut - which ultimately led to Zack Snyder's Justice League dropping on HBO Max - a great many fans are desperate to see David Ayer's original version of Suicide Squad.

The filmmaker continues to talk about that on social media and has shared several glimpses of what might have been.

We recently sat down with Scott Eastwood to discuss...

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Music and Lyrics
Image
In 2018, “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul missed out on breaking the record for fastest Egot acquisition by coming up short on their first Emmy bid for “A Christmas Story Live!”. From that point, however, they still had eight years left to achieve said record, and they could end up doing so with two years to spare now that they are in the running for the 2024 Best Music and Lyrics Emmy.

Pasek and Paul’s new nominated song from “Only Murders in the Building” is one of three comedic ones in its lineup, the others of which were written for “Girls5eva” and “Saturday Night Live.” Also in the mix are more somber tunes from the miniseries “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “True Detective: Night Country.”

In order to determine how Pasek and Paul will fare on this momentous outing, let’s take...

Disney's Darkest Cartoon Has a Secret Connection to One of Its Greatest Animated Films
Image
Beauty and the Beast paved the way for Gargoyles to be developed, both highlighting romantic elements with character-driven narratives. Goliath from Gargoyles is likened to the Beast with a more noble personality, creating a well-received alternative romantic figure. Audiences continue to appreciate both Beauty and the Beast and Gargoyles, leading to new live-action versions of both Disney titles.

One of Disney's most popular and critically acclaimed princess movies has a fundamental connection with one of Disney's darkest, most niche cartoons from the 1990s. Gargoyles was an animated television series about a group of do-gooder supernaturals who most people would fear. Despite the gargoyle's monstrous visage, they are a kind group who fight to protect humanity.

Gargoyles would never have existed as people know it today without the success of Disney's Academy Award-winning film, Beauty and the Beast. Beauty and the Beast is based off of a French version of...
