In spite of Mirzya being poetic, visually spectacular, a beautiful lyrical art in itself, the arrow misses the target.
binducherungath7 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Mirzya, a much-awaited film by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, is inspired from the famous Punjabi folklore of a tragic love story of Mirza- Sahiban. It comes in the league of other tragic love stories of Punjab – Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal etc. This film is also the launchpad for Harshvardhan Kapoor (Anil Kapoor's son) and Saiyami Kher (Niece of Shabana and Tanvi Azmi). Expectations roar high, when the film is written by a living legend Gulzar and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash. Mirzya is poetic, painted beautifully on a huge canvas, visually spectacular, but the screenplay falters. Mirzya is not able to evoke the pathos of such a powerful love story, not soul-stirring. The film shows the much famous folklore in two eras, visuals interspersed with Daler Mehndi's powerful voice in the background. When the story of Mohnish / Adil Mirza (Harshvardhan Kapoor) and Suchitra (Saiyami Kher) is conveyed, parallels are drawn with the scenes of Mirza-Sahiban story too.

Om Puri, a blacksmith, is shown working and saying that there would always be some fire in the streets of blacksmiths. Clubbed with this is that of Sahiban (Saiyami Kher of the old era) watching a group of horse riders galloping and her eyes full of appreciation for Mirza (Harshvardhan with the get up of an old era), a scruffy warrior winning archery competition against others. Throughout the film, relevant scenes from either of the timelines are blended and shown parallelly.

Mohnish and Suchitra are great friends as children, and both go to school together. Suchitra, a disciplined child, and Mohnish, a naughty child, are almost inseparables. One day, Suchitra gives Mohnish her homework book so as to save him from teacher's punishment, but ultimately ends up getting punished herself. Mohnish, unable to bear Suchitra getting punished, takes a much undesired drastic step. That ill-fateful incident separates Mohnish from Suchitra. Later on Suchitra is sent abroad by her father who is in Police department. Years fly by. The backdrop changes to Udaipur from Jodhpur, where prince Karan (Anuj Choudhary) is eagerly waiting for Suchitra to return from abroad so that he can propose her and announce his marriage plans to her. Mohnish, who is now known as Adil Mirza is the one who is taking care of horses in the stable. Unaware of Adil's actual identity, Suchitra's and Adil's paths cross.

Although the folklore is familiar to us, it is interesting to watch, how the parallels are drawn between Adil-Suchitra and Mirza- Sahiban's stories. How does Suchitra come to know regarding Adil's actual identity ? How Adil reacts when he sees Suchitra along with Karan ? What happens when Suchitra's father, Prince Karan's father, and in fact Karan react when they come to know regarding Adil and Suchitra ? Is the fate of Adil and Suchitra the same as that of Mirza-Sahiban ?

The film had tremendous potential. In fact, the lyrical way of storytelling by blending two timelines that of Mirza-Sahiban and Mohnish/Adil –Suchitra's stories with songs also is brilliant. But, efforts are not taken to show / justify the love story or strong bond between Adil-Suchitra. Strong ties of love in a relationship, where the protagonists separated decades back, is not developed. It doesn't touch one's heart.

Harshvardhan, Saiyami and Anuj are very good, but the lack of intensity in the script brings their intensity quotient down. Anjali Patil as Zeenat is also noticeable. Om Puri's presence is left incomplete on screen. Art Malik (A British Actor) and KK Raina who essayed Suchitra and Karan's father respectively are also good.

The dialogues are less in the film, rather the story is intertwined with the dance sequences. Songs are having meaningful lyrics. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Daler have given good folk songs.

Cinematography needs special mention, kudos to Polish cinematographer Pawel Dyllus.

Mirzya is poetic, painted beautifully on a huge canvas, visually spectacular. Expectations roar high, when the film is written by Gulzar and directed by Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, but the arrow misses the target. The screenplay falters. The film is not able to evoke the pathos of such a powerful love story, not soul-stirring. It lacks passion, intensity. But, one must watch it for the way this lyrical art is presented.

Mirzya : Poetic and Visual cinematic excellence minus entertainment and engagement
prafullasrivastav8 October 2016
Rakesh Omprakash Mehra is back with some artistic poetry of love saga from different ages. Definitely this one is full of cinematic excellence frame by frame with stunning visual effects. Debutant Harshvardhan and Saiyami were good in lead pair. Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy's music was mesmerizing. However Daler Mehdi's voice make some irritation in your ears. Mirzya is pure treat for Class audience which contain melody, art, visual enchantment. Arrow clash and chase sequence on Horses were terrific. As Rakesh Omprakash Mehra's film career is full of Sine Curve( consecutive Hit and Flop movies). His debut movie Aks was flop then Rang De Basanti was Hit. After that Delhi 6 was flop on box office then Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was Hit. As trend suggest, Mirzya will surely flop on box office.

Some good random thoughts by R-O-Mehra, but fewer efforts were put to get them in shape.

Some good random thoughts by R-O-Mehra, but fewer efforts were put to get them in shape. In an attempt to induce too much feel into the movie, the actual crux is lost. New actors Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher portrayed a good body language, despite having nothing much to showcase. Anjali Patil held her character well and was good in her little stint.

Mr.Mehra please give me my money back
Pramitheus7 October 2016
The most pretentious pile of turd splashed on the big screen since Roy and I am not exaggerating this one bit, mind you. This has pretentious written all over it. I would have given this movie 0 stars but it is not possible in this rating system and the only way I can justify the compulsory 1 star is the opening sequence, but then it is done over and over and over and over so many bloody times that I wish I wouldn't have thought that that was a good scene.

Well, everybody knows the story of Mirza-Sahiban but truly speaking I didn't and before getting into the theater I read about it a bit or else the flashback/lore sequence would have seemed even more vague. The people other than Anil Kapoor's son and the niece of Tanvi Azmi look from a foreign lineage for some reason. The whole movie is interjected with Daler Mehndi shrieking Mirzya and those irritating and even more pretentious and vague dance sequences. If anybody tries to explain it, I warn you, you are going to be slapped because THAT didn't have any significance at all! The cinematography looked like a recycled version of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Now to Anil Kapoor's son and Tanvi Azmi's niece. You might be wondering why I am not taking their names because they were taken due to above mentioned Bollywood background that they have inherited and anybody saying otherwise is lying through their teeth and that goes for Rakesh Omprakash Mehra. I still remember that my 1st review on IMDb was of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and I am a huge fan of RDB and even Delhi 6 had it's moments but this has diminished my respect for you. The reason that in an interview to T2 you clearly mentioned that the hero and heroine were taken solely on the basis of their acting prowess and they were treated just like any other actor. After watching the movie it is evident that you had Anil Kapoor breathing down your neck.

For moviegoers this is my true advice. I know many of you are a fan of Rakesh Omprakash Mehra or Gulzar and the girls might have a fondness for Junior Anil Kapoor but it isn't worth spending your money on. SO avoid this movie like the plague.

Harshavardhan Kapoor, Saiyami Kher come and go minus impact
kumarvarun198910 October 2016
Mirzya has everything that's required for a musical romance based on a popular Punjabi folktale: a pair of fresh faces (Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher) with great Bollywood genes, a strong supporting cast, and lilting music.

Outside Punjab, the story of Mirza-Sahiba may not be as well-known as the other folktales about star-crossed young love such as Heer Ranjha and Sohni Mahiwal, but it has an equally strong core of emotion. And there's no one better than Gulzar to be able to translate the story into a film, keeping the feelings and idiom intact. A touch of 'Romeo-Juliet' is stirred in to emphasise just how hard the lovers have to fight, and just how much our hearts have to go out to them. But right from the get-go, Mirzya tells us it's going to be more about setting the scene, as it cross-cuts in time — some sequences are as spectacular as anything we've seen recently — than giving us characters that will instantly grab us, and keep us with them. This problem plagues this lush, good-looking production right through, and makes it much less of a film than it could have been.

Transplanting the tale to Rajasthan allows for locations that can take your breath away, despite their overuse in Bollywood. Grand forts, picturesque hamlets, glittering deserts and undulating dunes, and 'rajwadaas' with all their grand costumes and liveried retainers: Mirzya is all eye candy. There's also something sweet and engaging about an initial segment which shows Suchi and Mohnish as childhood sweethearts very attached to each other, who part and meet again in very different circumstances.

The film starts to slide when we meet these two as young adults, Suchi (Saiyami Kher) as a curly-haired miss engaged to Prince Karan (Anuj Choudhry) who bumps into Adil-Mohnish (Harshvardhan Kapoor), and re-kindles old embers. But soon enough it gets stuck in silliness, and a line exchanged between the lovers becomes all too prescient: 'tum aa rahi ho ya ja rahi ho', asks he. The film, much too intent on creating prettiness, gives us no answers: Suchi and Adil-Mohnish come and go minus impact. And that's down to the fact that the lovers do not set the screen on fire. Except for a stray scene, and that too towards the end, when these two look at each other, really look into each other's eyes, and break out laughing, telling us that they are delighting in each other's presence to the exclusion of all else, they are merely spouting lines.Without that crucial element, where lovers create a tight world of their own and no one else is allowed, no romance works. In terms of acting potential, neither newcomer lifts off the screen, but Kapoor fares just a little better than his affectless leading lady: he appears to have a quiet spark which may surface after some more polishing. Flashback to his father Anil and his first film, you will instantly see the difference between an actor being groomed and an actor who is a complete natural, and who makes us look. Choudhry brings something to the table, as does the veteran Art Malik who is made to recite Shakespeare, but they get lost in the window-dressing. And neither K K Raina, hidden under designer glares, nor Om Puri in his muddy-grey garb, have much to do.

'Marzya" suits the film well rather than 'Mirzya'
dineshprakash7 October 2016
Director Mr. Rakesh Omprakash Mehara work as a technician is good but as a creative person notably bad. It is hard to believe that he was the brain behind my two most favorite films "Rang De Basanti' and "Bhag Milkha Bhag'. Not a single shot gives any glimpse of that magic in this film. Screenplay is obsolete and confusing. Writer thought that everyone is well versed with the 'Sahiba-Miraza' story, so he didn't feel a bit of requirement to at least describe the key points of that legend story. Film goes into flashback from present frequently, whenever an emotional scene comes, an intense song but difficult to understand the lyrics takes over with some good visuals. Lyrics do not justify the two different time periods at all. Lead characters childhood scenes are too lame. First of all they don't look cute. Girl looks older than the boy. They seem of age 7 to 8 years but in pre climax it got revealed by boy that he was twelve year old that time. Boy getting late to feed girl 'Til Laddo', teacher show causes him for being late then asks for home work's copy, girl passes her copy to him but teacher sniffs this and then asks girl for her home work copy, eventually leading girl canned. All class give expression as if it was most unusual incident when teacher already cleared that it is well known punishment. Boy keeps mum that time then decide to retaliate in some idiotic way by shooting the teacher!!! It gives first hint that you are going to witness some crap. It is love story but you can't find a faint glimpse of love throughout. Film starts with some high octane action with support of VFX but you don't feel anything because it was not cleared that what is happening and why, actually it was just for the sake of introducing the male lead. Girl went abroad and returns back, her childhood friend is working in her Prince fiancé stable. Again some lame hide and seek identity scene. When girl recognizes the boy is so bad that I strongly felt urge to laugh but controls it with subsided smile, but then after few scenes audience started to evoke controlled giggle and then I joined them shamelessly. Surprisingly there is some weird sense of humor in most of the emotionally intense scenes, which at least save you from getting headache. Boy's Polo playing with his master then flashback of horse riding of past time. Girl wants to learn horse riding, boy trains her and all that blah blah. A key scene of tiger attacking in full moon light looks so fake and crude in the time of so advanced technology. Again thrill lost in making. In climax marriage scene, sneaking out in veil is so old fashioned scene and why that old person supported her is not clear and why that girl commits suicide is also. It was just to add drama but sorry to say it looked absurd and film is full of such type of scenes. Pre climax and climax is unbearable but yes laughter is there for sure. Performance wise all bad actors are stuffed in one film. Harshvardhan Kapoor's looks is good but he speaks stone flat. Even good actress Anjali Patil gone wasted as Zeenat. Nothing to say about rest of the cast. Musically and lyrically 'Ye Wadiyan Dhoodhiyan Kohre Ki' is good.

No place for story Mirzya
sagarshaant9 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
After watching this movie, I was in a state of shock. No story, no acting, only sad voice of Daler Sahab was echoing everywhere. I am a big big follower of Gulzar Sahab and Mehra jee. 82 years Gulzar's age has stopped thinking as he used to in his earlier writings. Please watch Magadheera, you will feel far better.

The most funny part of this movie was that the past story of Mirza sahab, everyone was mute and dumb. That's more irritating. Without saying a word the past is told. And same scene is repeated almost n number of times to make you feel irritated and predict the present story.

Don't waste money on this movie.

Had a potential to be a Blockbuster hit, but poor acting and redundant scenes ultimately made it pale and pathetic
aniruddhabonny21 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I've given the movie a 4 just because it has Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's name in it. What I think the director wanted to do was to show two love stories, in two different timelines having the same consequences. It's not reincarnation of lovers movie like our favorite "Magadheera". And I watched the movie keeping that in mind, cause there's no way ROM sir will just rip of a storyline from another movie. Anyone who knows the legend of MIrza-Sahiban would say in hands of a great director, this story had the potential to become a blockbuster.

Harshvardhan Kapoor, bro you tried hard, but not too hard to act as a stable boy in this movie. With that accent and poker face, it's hard for anyone to connect with your character. Saiyami Kher, well I don't have much to say about her. These two can act in a movie depicting City life of Mumbai or Delhi, maybe Harsh acting as a struggling fashion model and Saiyami as one of the top models in the business and show their love story or such. Harsh is way too modern to look like a stable boy...

Musical-Visual-Poetic treat for cinema lovers who wants some decent movie
brij-raychanda15 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
When you approach the story different way then there will be ripples from all around. same happened with Mirzya as people doesn't understand even not bothered to watch it once (As people like to watch the gisi piti movies like Raaz reboot).

It's not easy to tell any well known story with such a poetic way. From trailer to it's songs movie shaken the movie buffs like me for it's different approach and after watching movie also the effect remained same.

Loved idea of showing the well known tell with touch of Shakespeare and specially Presentation of Mirza-Sahiban saga without unnecessary dialogues. Songs were woven with beautiful visuals. There were many moments in movie to cherish like, 1.Close up scene of Monish-Suchi lying on sand watching each other, 2. Monish-Suchi & Mirza-Sahiban smiling at each other all though knowing they were no longer live, 3. Mirza watching Sahiban with question in his eyes for broken arrows 4. Each frame of Mirza-sahiban story

although by putting more emotions or keeping climax more intriguing like Rang de basanti, movie would have been become classic tale.

Hats off to Gulzar Saab for fantastic screenplay-story-lyrics, Rakeysh omprakash mehra for wonderful direction, Cinematographer for such decent picturization, Harshvardhan kapoor his hard work and performance, Sayami kher for her fascinating look and SEL for marvelous BGM & Music.

Perhaps not a great failure but an universe of possibilities
rikuroy29 October 2020
Well, there were so many possibilities that this movie could be more impactful to the audience not only from India but also from the whole world, concerning the fact that the ancient storyline had no dialogues but a solid tragedy of a love story. I can't see this movie as a great failure but an universe of possibilities which is to be filled by imaginations of the youth and new movie makers.

I still believe in the abilities of Omprakash Mehra, as he is one of the only few director who has been a true baton bearer of Indian culture and history.

Opportunity lost
xscenex26 August 2020
Let me try to tell what went wrong technically without revealing the story..

Firstly the anecdotes or the screenplay was pretty messed up and confusing, its like when you show the protagonist's entry when not expected and then moved on to the slow pace back drop story..

The music was fusion with folk songs, but ruined it with the over electronic experimental beats here and there which was totally unnecessary. The chorus and singer's voice was over used during the screenplay which made it quite monotonous and tamed the interest in the movie.. overall wrong choice of music directors.

Screenplay was dull and dark, which didn't quite engage as an audience at all. could have been way better, brighter, with engaging side actors and alive. The cast of childhood actors was wrong, where the girl looks bigger, aged and stronger than the boy, whereas she should've been an innocent looking little girl to make the story more convincing that he fell for an innocent girl..

There were artistic scenes here and there with slow motion which felt like an advertisement on television. The story was good, but the execution was bad, the direction, cinematography, screenplay, and music.. all were messed up and didn't accompany each other. Whereas the acting of the lead character in adulthood was good but proved of least use. Hence, a great opportunity was missed.

Wastage of time
suvadipraj30 July 2017
This is not a well researched and well made movie. Background score and songs are only backbone. Not sure why Mr Mehra made this movie, I would have given -ve score if IMDb allowed to do so. Dialogues are poor, when kid Monish shoots his teacher, in background its been told "Aksar pyaar main aisa hota hai".. Seriously?? This movie is not made with director's full seriousness. Its a bad movie

1 for visuals only
Goodnessgrecianmoi28 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this on Netflix and by the end of it the constant "ooohhhhh Mirzyaaaaaaaaahhhhh" gave me a headache, irratated me and made me fast forward. Dreadful.

The visuals are beautiful but taking punjab out of the folklore was a bad decision. Its like taking Romeo and Juliet, placing one part in Russia and the present in Gibraltar? How the hell does that make sense? The acting atrocious- there was no conflict in Saihbans eyes/face that her brothers were coming to kill her lover, no immediate flash of horror as her brother drops from a horse killed by her lover. She should have been running towards them waving them to stop. No questions or pain for Mirzya for the betrayal as he sees his broken arrows and realises this is the end. No Sahiban running to protect Mirzya for the arrow that is about to hit him. It was soo placid so static so boring. It was alot like the stupid song that they played when the young child shoots his teacher "hota hai hota hai" meaning "Oh it happens"... What?! Killing someone at that age is not something to brush off like spilt tea "Oh it happens". Or when the young, beautiful, poor widow who kills herself leaving behinde her little son the song plays again "Hota hai hota hai..." "It happens". I guess that explains the silly rebuffal and reasons Anils son, Anil K and family gave - "It was something new to India/bollywood audience". Theatre, art, poetry, story telling, folklore is not new! Dont blame the audience and make out its them that cannot see a "good product". What is new is the awful mess you put together/dressed up and tried to sell. But yea i guess instead of accepting the faults it will be brushed as "Hota hai hota hai".

The kind that sets no trend and leaves a bitter taste in the mouth
cadburypg30 July 2017
Mirzya, when the trailer came out I couldn't help checking on the legend. The legend of Mirza Sahibaan. A sad tale of two star crossed lovers. They did elope together on Sahibaan's wedding day to another man and when found were killed by the relatives of Sahibaan. It is that poignant story that this movie set out to deliver with parallel drawn to a modern romance between two young people from Jodhpur. Oh how it fails !!! Firstly, the modern story of love doesn't make any sense. It has no practicality and absolute non trend setter. In the actual legend Mirzaa and Sahibaan grew up together and were in love since childhood. They were detached for a short time after their mutual attraction was discovered. Here, the girl moved abroad at a very young age and came back only to be betrothed to another man. This man she knew very well and she lead him on. Her betrothal wasn't against her wish. By this time she hadn't seen Her childhood friend the title protagonist of the movie for a minimum of 15 yrs. still when she comes across him and recognize him she hands herself over not caring to break her official engagement also. Riding 2 horses on one arse anyone? How can a person expect an old acquaintance to stay the same after so much time. Allowing a grungy horse care taker who never went to school and has a violent history to access you can only happen when you know the actor is Harshvardhan Kapoor. 2ndly there is a line repeated over and over "hota hai, pyaar mein aisa aksar hota hai". Especially after a murder and a suicide. I felt like finding the script writer or director and asking what they were thinking? Mirzaa of legend was not a sociopath or a criminal. If a child shoots his teacher he needs help. It doesn't happen often in love. No. Children that small are not supposed to feel in love like that. If one girl commits suicide in order to let another one elope with her friend, i am sorry, but that also does not happen often in love. Lives matter and are not disposable for main protagonists like flies dropping dead. 3rdly justice wasn't done even to the legend of Mirza. What was that tribe he was shown belonging from? What were those burning meteor like things dropping from sky? The script was so weakly written i couldn't believe it came from Gulzar. The music although annoyingly frequent was the only saving grace of the movie. This movie turned Mirzaa into a criminal and a stalker. Sahibaan turned into a beauty with no brains who came all finished from abroad only to have eloped with a guy she didn't know for years and whose plan was to "cross the border and phir dekhenge.." . Cross the border to where? Pakistan? The lesser being said about the performances the better. Harshvardhans face wasn't visible fully for the entirety of the movie and his dialogue delivery was weak.

Pathetic movie-Highly disappointed
nirvana-rehan16 October 2016
Pathetic movie, Poor direction, Wrong casting, No story, Waste of money / time

Seriously guys, don't even watch this on television, its total crap. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was a great film to watch but this (mirzya) is awful. Jr Anil Kapoor has no acting skills, Saiyami is just a pretty face, she can be utilized for item numbers in future. Had no great expectations from the film but only it was Mr Mehras movie, I decided to watch but was highly disappointed. My rating for the movie is 1 as there is no option here to give a zero to any film. Final verdict: Super Flop

beautiful
adityavaishnav-9560822 October 2016
Movie is really good but people will take time to understand it. Each and every word and scene of this movie is beautiful but It's not for everyone . And you will have to think deeply about it to understand the work of gulzar Saab and mehra sir. Someday people are going to praise this movie. Many people complain about concept of different time Dimensions but same ending in the end . But it's correct, To have same ending, even I took a day to understand the reason behind it. The mixture of music is great as the lyrics joins everything with nature making it beautiful. Script is short but is to the point. Direction from my point of view is great. Acting is basically based on expressions which is good,. Visuals are outstanding. Story does not offer something new but actually is more realistic.

Such a poorly built movie!!!
manalibakshi17 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This would have a great movie only if the story would have been as better as the screenplay! Such a poor story line was definitely not what is expected from Rakesh OmPrakash Mehra. It is really hard to believe that it was him who churned out beauties like that of Rang De Basanti and Bhag Milkha Bhag. The teasers in itself were not that immersive, but still I had thought that it might be a good once since it was none other than Rakesh OmPrakash Mehra!!! But I was wrong...weak story line, no synchronization and bad acting are some of the reasons that makes this film clumsy.

The story makes no sense, be it the childhood story or the one in the present. And the actors are so poor in terms of their acting skills. I really don't understand if they were selected on the basis of their skills or their filmy background!!! But, yes the songs, lyrics and the cinematic effect of the movie is what is quite good. You can definitely give a thumbs up for that. And if you ask me if I am going to recommend this movie to anybody, it is definitely a no.

Rakesh Omprakash Mehra should read this review. It is for his own benefit as a movie director. Poorly written with average performances
oazam7 October 2016
The guy who made Rang De Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag made this letdown.

Mirzya is an adapted folktale directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra and written by Gulzar based on the Mirza-Sahiban story starring Harshvardhan Kapoor, Saiyami Kher, Om Puri, Art Malik, and Anuj Choudhury.

Honestly, I was pretty eager to watch this movie because of its songs and its trailer which were highly anticipating and beautiful. But the movie itself went drastically wrong with 3 important aspects which are the story, screenplay, and acting in some way. Harshvardhan Kapoor had the potential but he did drag on in some parts during the movie especially when it came to emotional scenes which weren't tear jerking. Saiyami Kher acts like the way Mandy does in the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy because of showing only one expression when she shows different kinds of emotions like when you're happy or sad. The direction of this movie was absolutely incoherent because of using too many camera angles for close ups. Gulzar wrote this movie like he was about to get a heart attack in terms of rushing. The story was lukewarm and very generic. Nothing interesting to know about the movie. The pacing was atrocious and this movie almost turned out to be a snooze fest and did put me to sleep at times.

The only positives in the film are Cinematography and Music. The music did match the story in a good way although the movie contained a very generic story. The songs brought back all the good moments in Bollywood. The Dop was pretty decent and shot the locations very beautifully but the editing was less crisp and loose.

Overall, this movie wasted potential with mediocre direction and poor writing and could've been one of the best movies out this year but landed up being a snooze fest which is why Mirzya is worth watching but on TV or Netflix. Rakesh Omprakash Mehra for the first time screwed up as director. Try again and I know he will do better but just was too lazy to apply the same magic.

My cousin dragged me to watch this movie. First time in a theater I was talking rather than watching the movie. Every time there was something dramatic happening the background be like 'Ooooooooooo Mirzyaaaaaa!!!!!!" I mean Cmon, whatsup with that!! Usually people leave during the interval. I left the theater 1 hour into the movie. The cinematography was pathetic. The movie also talked about past life which came and went when it felt fit, which didn't make any sense in the entire movie, without any hint of a past life in the beginning. Love interest, village people dancing in every God damn song like they were there just for that very reason. Crappy acting, pathetic screenplay. I don't even know why it even has a 5 star rating.

Could've been better? Absolutely!!

Change the director and actors the screenplay, and the script and you got yourself a movie.

Body Beautiful, Minus Soul!
namashi_127 October 2016
Inspired by the Punjabi folklore of Mirza Sahiban, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Mirzya' is a visual dazzler, that lacks soul. Made with staggering ambition, this epic-love-story, sadly, lacks the heart to keep you glued.

'Mirzya' Synopsis: Two Star Crossed Lovers face tragic ends, in both, ancient times & in the modern era.

'Mirzya' is a visual marvel. Technically speaking, the film scores very highly. Each & Every Frame is mounted with beauty. And that's exactly why, the faulty writing & the soullessness puts you off. Gulzar, The Legend, fails to deliver an engaging narrative, as his Writing is not up-to the mark. Despite shifting between two time-lines, the film never transports you emotionally. There are moments that shine, particularly in the first-hour, but overall, the Writing is below expectations. Mehra is a filmmaker with a voice & his work in 'Mirzya' shows us that, once again. He is bogged down by a weakly written Screenplay, which lessons the effort put in. Also, the slow-pacing, doesn't work.

Paweł Dyllus's Cinematography is Magnificent. He's the real star of 'Mirzya'. Art & Costume Design are perfection. Shankar-Eshan-Loy's Score is wonderful. Action-Sequences are well-executed.

Performance-Wise: Debutants Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, deliver well. Harshvardhan is earnest & uses his emotive eyes to express much of the time, while Saiyami, looks gorgeous throughout & portrays her part with conviction. They both have potential, but 'Mirzya' doesn't utilize to the hilt. Of the supporting cast, Anuj Choudhry is notable, while Om Puri is wasted.

On the whole, 'Mirzya' is a body beautiful, minus soul.

Don't waste your time
Geeta3529 March 2017
Mirzya was a definite disappointment to me. The director has a sterling reputation for putting out great movies; however, he failed miserably with Mirzya. The story-line, based on a Punjabi folktale, was poorly written and confusing; the scenes and the flashbacks were monotonous and meaningless, the main actors were awful: their faces were for the most part expressionless, and in Harsha's case, he seemed to be unable to deliver his lines with conviction. Both of the young stars need to take acting lessons at A. Kher's acting academy. What a waste of potential and any viewers time.

Lost between two tales.
ozaanish8 October 2016
The movie begins with some competition taking place at a stunning location of Leh. From the first frame audience are left clueless as when the action just kicks off the other modern tale begins where two school kids in Jodhpur begins the story. The boy Munish played by Harshvardhan Kapoor falls in love with a police officers daughter Suchi played by Saiyami Kher, a tragic incident takes place which falls them apart. After some years, the couple meet each other again but this time Suchi is a soon to be princess and Munish (now Adeel) is a horse trainer and the prince orders Adeel to train his fiancée. Then starts the love triangle between the lovers and the prince Karan played by Anuj Choudhary.

In between the modern day story comes the story about legendary lovers Mirza-Sahiban. The historic love story has not even a single dialogue which not only make the audience confused but also irritates the people . People are left confused whether the movie is about Reincarnation or its the two different story played. Director makes no attempt to connect with either the audience or the tales. The only thing that is served properly is the camera-work and an hunting sequence with the tiger. Music of the movie is decent but the direction, Narration and the tragic let down screenplay makes the audience question about the real content. On top 135 minutes will make you feel like the movie is almost 270 minutes.

Both the new-comers Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher does a decent job since there were not much dialogues and screen time given to prove there worth. The co-actors like Art Malik and K.K.Raina doesn't leave a mark and Om Puri character is meaningless because the role is not clearly defined. Anjali Patil who plays a lover devoted to Adeel makes her screen time count.

Overall go for the movie if you want to witness some beautiful locations and tragic love story but don't expect the magic by the director as he has made some tremendous movies in the past.
