- Lens' boneheaded ten-year devotion to his ex-Dora has spoiled any good in his life. A man without a compass is lost spinning with no place to go.
- It's a good start to a bad day for Len. He's in bed with his sort-of-sometime girlfriend, Jess, a woman who's crazy about him. They share in the warm afterglow of a passionate night... until a sore topic ruins a tender moment and soon Len's dodging hard objects aimed at his head.
Luckily, he survives because today there are important things to tend to. Bobby, who is like a son to him, has been going sideways recently and it's time for some 'mentoring' from his surrogate father. Len's planned some one-on-one time, a nostalgic fishing adventure he's sure will get the kid right... except Len can't find the fishing poles and the trip has to be cancelled. And now the love of his life, Dora, Bobby's mother, Len's ex, the aforementioned 'sore topic', the woman Len's never stopped loving, is pissed off. Can things get worse? Sure. In a fit of anger, Bobby gets in a fight and breaks a guy's nose. The guy is Beau, his mother's boyfriend. Dora's had enough. She wants Bobby out of the house. It's time he makes his own way in the world. Len thinks that's a bad idea. Bobby's 22 going on 14 and with not a clue as to what the world is about or what he's doing in it. Len manages to get Bobby a temporary reprieve from his mother's anger on the condition that he apologize to Beau. But Bobby doesn't show up at the arranged meeting and now everyone's mad at everyone else.
Finally some good news. Len's a Real Estate agent barely surviving the recession. He's close to a big sale, though, and the commission would solve most of his financial problems for the foreseeable future. Except that during a walk-through, Len and his clients discover a runaway camping out in the bathroom. The kid, Adam, broke into the house to get a good night's sleep. Goodbye commission. And though Adam has destroyed any chance for the sale, Len can't help feeling sorry for him- it's those fatherly instincts getting Len in trouble again. The kid is lost, hitchhiking from who-knows-where to wherever. Len makes himself responsible for Adam's safety. Over the course of a long night, Adam gets Len involved in a brawl with a giant homeless dude, screws up Len's make-up date with Jess and takes Len's focus away from his paramount task - solving the estrangement issues between Bobby and Dora. By the end of the day, it's Bobby who's running away, Dora who's moved on from Len and Len who's Lost at Desert.
