Another Disney Canadian import
bkoganbing5 April 2016
Occasionally the Disney Studios imports some shows from other countries for its lineup. Following in the tradition of Life With Derek and My Babysitter's A Vampire from Canada comes Backstage. If I had to best describe it, it's a version of Fame done like a reality show.

A whole lot of talented teens are the students of a performing arts high school, talented in real life as they are on the small screen. But this is structured like a reality show. Backstage is the story of a lot of talented teens going to a performing arts high school like the one in Fame. We see the kids both performing and in interviews telling of their various issues, with faculty, with each other, and mostly their own angst about knowing whether they have the right stuff.

Backstage is a nice and pleasant and unassuming show. With no star regulars per se carrying it on name recognition here's hoping it lasts for a while.

Rip off of Degrassi?
funk-2146012 July 2016
Disney has made some good sitcoms, and some bad ones. But never have I seen a sitcom like this before. Backstage is about these teens who have talent, dealing with the pressure that's put on them in school by teacher's and students. But Degrassi has a almost similar plot. They always have problems at school, home, drugs, sexuality Etc. I never really heard of the show ( probably because of the viewer ratings? ) but trying to compete with there version of drama, and nickelodeons version wouldn't be easy. Disney always want's to make there TV shows "Family friendly" but end up making annoying ones that kids at the age of 6-14 won't bother watching. I'm not saying the show is bad, but the drama doesn't grab viewers attention when the director was attending to. Maybe the writers just forgot what drama was like for them when they where teens. Just watching a clip from YouTube made me incurious from watching another one. They mostly just have really boring arguments that again doesn't appeal to anyone. If your looking for a decent drama that's more for teens, skip this show. If your looking for a family friendly drama you've found the right show.

Cliché undone
bostonred88-128 June 2016
A teen drama that manages to avoid cliché. It is done in a unique style not seen before by this reviewer. We get to know the characters, slowly, just as would happen in life. All the actors do great jobs with their roles. Their characters as well as their interactions are all very believable. Their dilemmas are typical for high school, but that can not be avoided. Still, the show does not dwell on anything unoriginal.

A unique show that manages to make something that should be worn out, talented performers at a high school, feel fresh and fun. Well worth watching. I am disappointed that Season 2 is being shown daily. It is a terrific show and deserves the once a week treatment. It does not deserve to be rushed through. I hope Disney understands what a gem this show is and gets behind it way more than they do. It is rarely on or promoted. Now they are showing an entire season in 3 weeks. This show deserves more.

My favorite show...
lynnchien23 August 2016
I live in the U.S., so I have to watch it on Disney. The Disney shows have been going downhill, as everyone already knows. The only actual shows I watch on this channel are the Canadian imports. Sometimes they stop airing them, so I must watch it online. To be completely honest, I had low expectations for this series. But, after watching the premiere, I grow to enjoy this show a lot.

This show is a drama containing high school students going through trouble with their relationships at Keaton. This show clings into the story of their troubling problems and having to stay close to one another. The stress these students face is relatable. It seems it would be enjoyable for teens. But, young children might find this show a bit confusing.

Overall, this is one of the most remarkable drama I've seen in a while. Though it barely ever comes on anymore, I still watch the episodes constantly online. I can watch the same ones nonstop, and still be interested in what happens.

Backstage is an amazing show with likable characters, nicely thought-out messages, and a compelling plot. I recommend this show. You won't regret watching this drama.

Should be named "Backstab"
Carlos-anglada27 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The Good: * It's about an arts school. Art schools are an endangered species, and deserve to be showcased and protected. * The school' offering is varied and includes not only performing arts, but also plastic arts, in my opinion, THE most endangered of artistic expressions within the context of modern Western education. * The director is black. * For the most part, teachers are written as skilled, knowledgeable educators, capable of achieving that rare balance between nurture and challenge. * The dancers ARE dancers. * Dramatic situations are engaging - you want to know what happens next (even when they are ludicrous - more on that later). * The reality show-type "confessionals" are a very clever and effective way of doing introspection. * Most kids in the show are capable actors and have decent range.

The bad: * Character development is very slow, and sometimes seems to go all over the place. Granted: these are teenagers, but sometimes I get the feeling that the characters serve the plot and not the other way around. * This is not Disney or Nick, so the resources to hunt down and sift through the best talent money can find isn't there. The show wants to tell the story of "amazing young singers", but you won't get a Dove Cameron, a Sofia Carson, a Leon Thomas, let alone an Ariana Grande, a China Anne McClain or a Demi Lovato. You'll get kids who are decent singers that still have a ways to go. I guess that should be good enough, since it's more realistic. However, as a musician, I am left wanting. * Only singers and dancers get the spotlight. The only musician who does not sing is a DJ, not an instrumentalist. Similarly, the only painter the show manages to focus on, turns out to be a dancer, apparently just to fit the tropes of the show. Segue shots are full of kids carrying tubas, playing bongos, twirling drumsticks, practicing saxophone, but the scenes are never about them. Again, as a musician, I find this irritating.

The Ugly: * Kids' relationships are fragile and volatile. Heck, they're even violent sometimes! But THIS level of betrayal? ALL the time? All of these secrets, manipulations, and right out lies? It's ludicrous! It would appear that writers look for ways of creating rifts between the characters just to fuel the drama. * I'd like to see themes like race, gender, equality, even the relevance of the arts as a trade get treated. Nope. All issues are dealt with here are pretty much intrigue and drama fueled by huge hormone-driven egos. It's almost like if Shonda Rimes had written High School Musical. * Serious discipline faults are seldom really dealt with in a convincing. Only one incident of import was really dealt with by the faculty, BUT with NO intervention from the parents whatsoever! I don't know how things are handled in Canada, but here in PR some of these situations would have incurred at least a suspension and you can rest assured the principal would have called parents to their workplace and expect them to drop everything at once for a closed door meeting at the school within the day.

Season 3!
for-9587619 July 2018
When I first started to watch it, I was skeptical but before i knew it time was passing by and I was already on episode 5! I really hope they make a season 3. Not often I find a series that I enjoy so much and want more.

I didn't realize season 3 isn't out yet so I actually had to stop binge watching it so I don't go through the rest of season 1 and 2 so fast! Hopefully by the time I am done watching the first two seasons the third one will be right around the corner. I watch this show on Netflix.

The best actors on the show make many high school drama students look like experts. It's sad

Starts slow but hits it out of the park
ramana-spencer27 May 2018
I ended up giving this show a chance. Most likely because I went to an arts school. At first I found the show underwhelming, It wasn't bad, but also not very meaty. Over time it started to develop and once it started firing on all cylinders (quite a ways into the first series) I became very impressed. It's not just a kids show, though it's formatted like one and leaves out a lot of real world themes that high school teens wrestle with. It is on the Canadian family channel.

Besides being loaded with incredible music and dance performance that get better and better as the show moves on. Despite toning down on content to landing somewhere between G and a soft PG, it's a fantastic, real, and extremely engaging binge worthy show that deserves to run a very long time.

I hope the slow start of the show, and the initial lack of depth and complexity doesn't hold it back from becoming the phenomenon it turns into and deserves large and long term traction for. It initially does feel like only a tween show but evolves into something genuinely fantastic.

Besides the fact that they made alya a mean lying backstabbing idiot it's a great show

Warning: Spoilers
This is a pretty good show I would say. It's great if you're looking for something to binge watch on Netflix, although the only thing I would say is the way the portray some of the characters (alya) and made them mean I didn't really like. Also I know you need drama in a show for it to be interesting but there is to much drama in every relationship, 0% of them last for more than like five/six days. I do like the show though behind all that there are some great loveable characters.

Absolute Garbage
officialsierra13 July 2018
This is more of a series of brief thoughts rather than a proper review. The best actors on the show walk the line between average and bad. The dancing in this is amateur at best, although later on one of the characters progresses to ok. Interpretive dance is cringe. Songs are cringe. Singing ranges from horrid to nearly tolerable. Some characters look like feral gophers.

Backstage follows gifted students in various different arts.
lebakeman15 September 2016
Backstage is an excellent show! It may seem stupid at first, but somehow they really hook you in. I binge watched the first 15 episodes in two days! Seeing how the characters really feel when they are in interviews is an interesting take, and I have enjoyed it. The actors are actually talented as musicians, artists, and dancers. Most shows do not have talent like that. The only problem I have with the show is that they have too many characters, and I think they are planning on having more. Scarlett and Julie could have been combined into one character, and some are useless altogether. Even then, I can easily overlook that. I would recommend Backstage to my friends!

Amazing my favorite show!
rbobbyfashion16 November 2018
I love how the show is set at an arts school and it is so good. I love how its so fun to watch but not cheesy like other shows can be. The show is so relatable and the talent that the show produces is incredible. I need a season three of Backstage! If there is no season three, I will not be happy! Everyone who loves Backstage needs to come together and make a fan club for the show so that the producers and creators of the show can see how much we love the show. I suggest that we start doing this now because the actors are getting older and moving on to other shows so we need to show them how much we love the show before it is too late!

If you mashed the bad parts of Glee and High School Musical and the Office
ShadeofMisery15 September 2017
This show is bad. It's bad in a way that I would never let my 12 year old sister watch this. It tried to be a mokumentary with cheesy corny lines, unbelievable characters and story lines. Talking heads that don't make sense and add no cohesion to the story whatsoever. I was never a fan of Glee. I didn't like High School Musical. And as an "adult" I watch the office when I'm frustrated at work. This show seems to have thought that it could be a quarter of a success of those three shows/movie. This show is more of a train wreck than the second season of SMASH. (The first season of SMASH was amazing and I highly recommend it. It's better than this thing.)

I want another season!
alec-2923618 March 2021
The actors, are very talented, the songs are catchy and the plot is pretty good. I love that it's really teenagers, the ones acting, singing and dancing. Not like in other TV series. I would like to see another season and get to see more of the characters and their backstory. I love that it's an inclusive series, and they deal with serious life issues that most teenagers go through, a good message.

Backstage is an amazing show!
wm-762642 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I love Backstage! You would think that with many different story lines you would get confused but it is easy to follow and very interesting. It isn't as appropriate for younger kids as other Disney shows but for teens and older it is very appropriate because we can relate to all of the drama the teens are dealing with on the screen. Body image issues, trouble with math, boy troubles, and trying to find out where they fit in. All of the actors are very talented. I sincerely hope there is many more seasons. This is a show that teens need to have right now and NEED to watch ASAP!!!

Good
ellabgriffiths21 December 2017
Good show, which is very addictive.

I would like for there to be more love interest on there as the scenes where there is are the best, most interesting scenes and where the acting is best, by far. I would like for the main characters in the dancing segment of the show to interlink in this way with the other main characters, or at least have more love interest within them, as the music segment get most of this topic

Boring and Bad

This is not a good show. Even by Disney TV/kids show standards this is boring and very poorly written. Acting is not great, but they are kids, so who knows how good they might actually be?
