Violence & Gore

  • Batman beats up a man, and is probably the most violent Batman animated film out there
  • The violence in this film is super rare, but when it occurs, it's shocking and realistically graphic. The tone is really dark and unexpected, and is about as intense as Joker (2019).
  • A woman is shot in the stomach by The Joker, blood is shown shooting out. As a result, she is permanently paralyzed.
  • A man is shot in the head and blood sprays out by several men. This was shown two times.
  • Batgirl punches a man repeatedly in the face, her hand then has blood on it.
  • Some mild action fight sequences throughout.

Profanity

  • Two uses of the word "shit."
  • One use of "asshole."
  • Two uses of the word "piss."
  • "B.S." is said at least once, which is short for "bullshit."
  • A gangster says "screwed up."
  • Mild - Occasional uses of "hell", "ass", "bitch", "asshole", "pissed", "good in the sack", and "goddammit".
  • The word "freakin" is used a few times.
  • Funny how this is rated R, but there's no f-bombs.
  • No.
  • The following profanity is used: Hell, damn, ass, one use of 'bitch', one use of 'Goddamn', and about two uses of 'Jesus'.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A bottle of tequila is seen.
  • A man pulls out a cigar when confronted by Batman but he is never seen actually smoking it.
  • Occasional drinking.
  • Joker (before he becomes the Joker) is seen drinking what appears to be rum, gin or wine in a bar while talking to two gangsters.
  • Barbara is shown taking contraceptives.
  • Cocaine paraphernalia is seen on a table on a yacht

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • More dark, disturbing, and intense rather than outright violent.
  • Some viewers may find the carnival scenes to be disturbing.
  • Even though its animated format prevents it from being too shocking, it's still extremely brutal, bleak and realistic, and not at all comical or "cartoony".
  • A man is stripped naked and forced onto a hellish ghost train ride to send him mad. No detailed nudity is shown.
  • Joker's presence and transformation is disturbing and scary.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Joker shows Gordon naked bloody pictures of Barbara Gordon though it's not too graphic. Barbara's breast are partially shown a bit and her cleavage is seen.
  • Batman and batgirl kiss, during which Batman grabs her rear as they are about to have sex.
  • After joker shoots Barbara, he unbuttons her top revealing her bra and some cleavage with implications of undressing her completely.
  • James is kidnapped and stripped down in a carnival and he has too stare at photos of fully nude Barbara. Her breasts are visible but nipples and genitals are out of frame.

Violence & Gore

  • Near the end of the Joker's flashback, we see him falling into a chemical plant's waste pond and he's horribly disfigured as a result. Driven insane by this, he laughs maniacally and then we see him rise from the ground and suddenly, we see a frightening extreme closeup of the Joker's laughing face, with blood visibly running down his eyes and mouth and his face also shows some spasms as well. Very terrifying and disturbing.
  • Barbara gets shot by joker it's pretty bloody it's all splattered around her
  • The final fight ends as The Joker fires the gun only to find it not working.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In a flashback showing us the tragic origin of the Joker, it's shown that he was a failed stand-up comedian and former lab technician whose pregnant wife dies in a household accident. Devastated, the man agrees to help two criminals to rob a chemical plant, only to fail and he falls into the plant's waste pond, where he's disfigured and this drives him to insanity and transforms him into the Joker, laughing maniacally as we then see a frightening closeup of his laughing face.
  • The Joker's laugh may be disturbing to some viewers. His face is shown to be pale white and horribly disfigured, with greenish hair, dark red lips, blood coming out of his eyes and mouth, and he's shown making a disturbing face while laughing maniacally, complete with angry-looking eyebrows and his eyes being wide open, with the pupils being pitch black with white dots inside them, and the veins and capillaries of his eyes are actually noticable. This is chilling, disturbing and scary.
  • The Joker's theory may be very highly disturbing for some viewers, as he wants to prove that any ordinary person can go insane just like him after one really bad day. For this, he torments James Gordon, and while Batman stops him, it's clear that Gordon almost goes completely mad.
  • It's implied that Batman might've killed The Joker at the end of the movie, because of the shot composition, it is unclear wether or not Batman killed Joker, and is left ambiguous
