From the guy who brought you Jurassic Shark...
Leofwine_draca22 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
COUNTRYCIDE is a stab (pun absolutely intended) at the usual kind of indie horror with a couple finding themselves stranded in a wood during a trip and forced to camp the night. Their vacationing is interrupted by the interventions of a psychopath, and would-be thrills ensue. That this was directed by the guy behind RAIDERS OF THE LOST SHARK and JURASSIC SHARK speaks volumes; it's a far from good movie, and quite often just intensely dull. Still, the soundtrack is a little better than in most indies, and the acting's not too shabby either; it's just a pity there's little story of interest.

Narcolepsy

Warning: Spoilers
Atleast she managed to stay awake long enough to persevere in the Canadian wilderness. I thought guns were illegal in Canada? Maybe the production got a special dispensation from their Cuban Prime Minister to get toy guns for this farce of the Most Dangerous Game theme. This review requires a certain amount of characters to be submitted, and since I created an account in order to do this, I will just ramble on. I think they used the same stuffed coyote for the attacking wolf and the bear at the end. Even with budget constraints though, they should have been able to make a more plausible movie. I mean, hell, the boyfriend didn't even know he was a boyfriend.

Not the best movie
andreahanekom5 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The scenery and sound is nice, but I feel like the movie was boring as there wasn't that much dialogue or plot. Most of the movie is spent on the girl being stuck in a bear trap searching for her boyfriend and/or getting help. Thus, there isn't much talking until later in the movie where the hunters show up. Plus, speaking of the boyfriend, it is never really mentioned how the hunters got him.

The acting is mediocre and the characters are rather flat. For example, there aren't many characters or meaning interactions. Their voices and facial expressions are also bland.

On a more humorous note, I feel the movie would have been much shorter if they just slept in the car instead of putting up camp 😅

It's Like "Country Side" Plus "Homicide" Get It???
lawlorwalter11 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
What a brilliant title I mean it's about going to the country side which is usually like a happy place but then there are homicides that happen there which is a big surprise and not a happy thing so it's like Country-cide get it? That's a very awesome title unfortunately it's all down hill from there when you get to how good---I mean bad---this movie is. Actually by bad I really mean awful because this movie is grade A for Awful.

Absolutely terrible
Spike_the_Cactus29 February 2020
I can be perfectly content with a bad movie if it has some charm and/or nic ideas. This film has neither.

The acting is more wooden than the forest setting. The sheriff appears to have had his dialogue dubbed (badly), and the writing is dreadful.

Honestly, if this was a school project it would fail.

Typical cr@p by Brett Kelly

Non-existing plot, screenplay, camera work and acting, not even on a level of a decent school project. Don't let the poster mislead you.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. I'm not even going to make a long review cause I don't wanna waste anymore time with this crap. It's making me so mad. They talk like robots and there is absolutely no plot whatsoever. I'm actually so angry that I wanna slap everybody included in the making of this.

There's a reason I gave it 6 stars
WillowUndergroundStudios7 October 2019
The reviews on here don't exactly know what they're talking about. This film is actually really good. A couple is driving across country and then they stop for the night. That's when things get bad. The boyfriend mysteriously goes missing and then it's revealed through a hallucination from blood loss (nice touch) that he's dead. See, that was good. That was new. The fact that she's in a bear trap most of the time is genius too. Not knowing if she will get help, eating poisonous mushrooms just to try and survive, all the while your leg is still stuck in the bear trap and not knowing if you'll die but giving life a fighting chance at the same time.

And then there's her rescuers. You automatically think they'll rape her because they're in a remote cabin, three dudes, and a helpless chick. You think, oh here's a cliche. But then all of a sudden, NO, and you're like holy crap, that was new. This movie has a lovely finish, a situation where the audience thinks the chick is helpless but isn't, and then the ending is a nice fade out.

That's why I gave this film 6 stars. It's a good movie.

Not Funny Just Bad - Only Good Thing is the Poster
brice-945-4100277 July 2018
This is a really bad movie. The only good thing about it is a decent looking poster but actually all that does is raise my hopes to make me think this might be a real movie but it's not.

I want to support Ottawa actors but this movie is just awful start to finish and in every way imaginable. Brett Kelly is a local director and love him for trying but dude you have to stop now, every one of your movies if you can even call them that are terrible. This is what you get when someone with zero experience or talent takes a camera phone and shoots their friends for a few hours running around in somebody's yard.

The picture and sound quality are zero.

There is no script or story to speak of here.

The actors come off looking bad mostly because they have no direction and nothing to work with.

Worst of all unlike most zero budget movies this one is bad but doesn't even make the level of being the kind of bad you can enjoy watching or laugh at, it is just a bad, tedious, boring movie that is hard to get through.

I hate having to watch things and then pretend they're awesome just because friends of friends are in it so I won't, this is a crime against movies and the director, writers, producers, all of them should stop making these movies. I've seen three now (this, the music camp/school one and Spyfall) and they are all boring turds. Couldn't even finish the music one and I was trying.

We're Hunters... We Hunt... Average Flicks Like This One....
P3n-E-W1s327 November 2021
Greetings and salutations, and welcome to my review of 2017's Countrycide.

The story gets a 1 out of 2: The Direction and Pace receive a 2 out of 4: The Acting gets a 1.25 out of 2: And my Enjoyment level hits a 1.5 out of 2:

Giving Countrycide a 5.75 out of 10:

The movie is your basic "Killer In The Woods" fayre and offers nothing new to the sub-genre. And for most viewers, this is where the film may falter most. Though I do commend the writer and director, Brett Kelly, for keeping it simple: A couple on their way, cross-country, to a wedding pull over in a secluded forested area to camp for the night before continuing their long journey. Unfortunately, they stumble across some hunters - or the hunters stumble across them. Even "The Hunters" are simplistic in their pursuits; they are hunters, and they hunt anything and everything. These huntsmen love nothing better than watching the life ebb out of the eyes of their prey. I loved how shocked they were when Abby presumes they are going to eat her and her boyfriend. It made me titter.

Humour is one of the main threads in my enjoyment of this little flick: this principally comes from Ranger Scott, who possesses one of the most cheerful voices and persona's I've seen on film. Being both simultaneously infectious and annoying. Nevertheless, it works well to carry the movie through the slower and darker parts.

The one thing I would have loved to have seen more of was personalities and characteristics. Even the joyous Ranger Scott manifests as little more than two-dimensional, and the hunters are close to being zero-dimensional.

Kelly's simplistic style carries across to his filming, which works... but could have been so much better. But here's another "Hats Off" moment: Kelly decides to tell the story primarily during the daytime. There are remarkably few night scenes, generally predominant in this sub-genre. Usually, these are so low light that you cannot see what is happening, which typically spoils the movie for me. Kelly goes one better and superbly lights the might scenes too. The scene where Abby talks to her boyfriend Mike's ghost is beautiful. However, the story needed more action and suspense for it to succeed. What is on offer isn't utilised so well. It would appear Kelly needs to grow into his director's boots a tad more in the thriller stakes.

It's the pacing of Countrycide that helps to keep the viewer watching. Kelly has opted for a steady canter. Granted, in this style of Dark Thriller, a variety of paces would have helped to build the missing atmospheres. But the steady pace serves to keep the story flowing well to the movie's finale.

The cast is a smidgen above average. And that is tremendous due to the characters needing more meat on their bones. The actors portraying the hunters needed to come across more ominously. These are the bad guys, and you need to be scared of them.

All that said, Countrycide entertained and sustained my attention, and I enjoyed it. It's not perfect; nothing is. I would easily recommend this movie to pass an hour. Though if there is something better available I'd advise watching that first. Countrycide isn't worth a rush to watch, and if you miss it, well, it wouldn't be a bad thing.

Once you've set up camp then check out my Chiller Thriller Killers, and The Game Is Afoot lists to see where Countrycide bivouacs in my charts.

Shoulda been called BearTrap

Another reason why Brett Kelly is the modern day Hitchcock. The movie premise was original and believable, characters were well written and Robin Hodge did a magnificent job. Genuinely good watch.
